Anyone “upgraded” from 5900X to 5800X3D for gaming?

Should I get a 5800X3D?

It's probably pretty game dependent for sure. Can't say I have noticed any hitches in the games I play. But they are mostly FPS games like COD, BF2042, some Forza 5 and MSFS2020. Even games like Control, Cyberpunk 2077, RDR2, I am always GPU limited at 4K and FPS always hover in the 90~120 range. Some games like COD I'll use Balanced DLSS and lock in at 144 FPS (monitors max at 4K). Can't say I have ever noticed FPS dips on my setup.
 
Never had hitches before. Still don't have hitches? Any game you want me to test that had hitches?
Well for me it was Farcry 6 and Flight Simulator. That was on a 3900x and 3960x. Well if you don't notice any difference in smoothness then you may have wasted your money and time.

I should have said jerkiness as in slower framerates periodically.
 
The delta at 4k is small, and in many titles there is almost no difference. In some the additional cores actually helped. If at 1440 or under though, it's the better choice for sure.
 
Minimum 1 and 5 percents should be improved even at 4k by quite a bit, from what I've read.

Again, some games, yes. Other games, no. It's a complete wash at 4K, unless there is a specific game you are targeting, but the same case could be made for the 5900x given that some games it is also substantially better. Which is why I say complete wash.

I think everything gains from the fast cache onboard but part of the price we pay for it is a decrease in clock speed. So for some games the decrease in clock speed eats the gains from the cache. Honestly I think this chip is one that would greatly benefit from direct die cooling and then maybe AMD would unlock the chip for overclocking. I will have to say the memory controller is stout on these things, I could never get DOCP and 3600 speeds to work on my 5900x without manually tweaking the timings. Also amazing it can do 4500 on all cores with less then 1.1 volts.
 
Yes my CPU is doing 4450-4500 MHz.
I will try the PBO tool thing to see if I can bump it up.

I think what I sacrificed in cores shows up in shader compilation and loading time. Most games are taking slightly longer to load (no measurement, maybe placebo)?

Overall, I don’t play Far Cry 6 or Metro anymore so my current games are not benefiting. I am playing Plague Tale 2, Dying Light 2 and MW2 and they are a complete wash. I have put up my 5900X for sale and thus far, feel that it is the superior processor.
 
Tried PBO tool thing. Normal core was boosting till 4275 all core in CPUZ bench.

-10 boosting till 4375 all core
-20 boosting till 4450 all core
-30 boosting till 4450 all core

Also tried setting max boost to 4650 from 4550 but nothing happened. Guess will stick with -20 and check for instability.

CPUZ bench increased with -20 more than -30. Will run some games and see what’s up.

Only way your getting more speed is if your willing to try running the FSB beyond 100 MHz. Personally I didnt feel a need to push it, seems fast enough for me.
 
Yeah FSB is a bit finicky on Ryzen. Don’t feel like playing with it. I think -20 is decent enough. Will bench to see if it is worth my time to put this in startup or not.

Think it is a game issue but I don’t have any way to test this crap as I sold my 5900X. Didn’t experience any hitching during my brief play through with that processor. Also shader unpacking takes longer in MW games and whilst loading some cache in FC6.

Gotta live with these decisions. Also all my CPU ePen0s marks are lower.

Oh well. Will probably end up throwing money on the next AMD or Intel soon enough. Not the best decisions of my life here.

I found this comparison between the 5800X3D and the 5900X and was very surprised how thorough it was. It even elaborated upon how each CPU responds quite differently to RAM speeds. The takeaway is that the 5800X3D is much less dependent upon having great RAM, the 5800X3D was faster in basically every game tested, and beyond the FPS, it also showed great improvements with 1% lows aka "microstutter".

It's also important to note that even though you can adjust the curve optimizer settings on the 5800X3D via software, it can produce somewhat unexpected results. This is mainly because:
-The 5800X3D does not boost the same way a "normal" Zen3 CPU does. The 5800X3D only has a few pre-set boost "tiers".
-The 5800X3D has a max voltage of 1.35v compared to 1.5v on a "normal" Zen3 CPU. As a result of already operating at a lower voltage, being too aggressive with curve optimizer can actually cause a performance regression in some situations due to the CPU no longer having enough voltage to boost to the next "tier".

From my own testing so far, using Curve Optimizer -30 all-core (via software) resulted in an multi-core score increase in Cinebench, but was really hit or miss in games. I don't think that using Curve Optimizer in software is going to be worth it for most people unless they are really pedantic about that last 1% of performance and are willing to test it in every game that they play. At a minimum, I would re-test your gameplay with Curve Optimizer set to 0 (Zero) just to make sure that you didn't create the problem that you are experiencing.

Sure I can test without PBO and see if I get the hitching in Plague Tale 2.

I mean, the "AMD dip" has been a thing for a long, long time. I've only heard of it being corrected finally with Zen4. Some people don't push their rig to a level where they see it, but if you look at the 1% and 0.1% lows they've always been there.
 
With the 5x00 series in particular, PBO basically doesn't help unless you're undervolting with it (Or have amazing cooling), as it just adds too much heat. It's not like the 2x00 where you could just turn PBO on and get an instant performance boost across the board just by raising power limits. Similar in principle to newer GPU's, where raising the power target alone can actually hurt performance since the GPU will just run hotter, and thus de-clock more. It's counter-intuitive, but that's what is happening.

Just keep in mind your running a cpu with less cores now, so make sure your not running something in the background that is causing you a issue. But so far I have been happy with my switch, it's just slower decompressing files now then it used to be, but that is the price of less cores. For games it runs great and I have noticed a boost in games, so it was a great upgrade for that.
 
I've been considering this upgrade for a few weeks now. 5800x3d are tough finds near me for the deal price, but a 7700/mobo combo is on sale right now which I've read the 7700 does boost over the 5800x3d and gives me an upgrade path to 7800x3d or 7900x3d. Ideally for me I'd go for a 7900x3d or the 13700 as I usually do have background operations for work running while I play.

If you want a 7x003d, just wait. No point in going AM5 right now only to dump the current AM5 CPU in less than a year. These current AM5 CPU's are going to tank hard when the 3D versions come out.
 
bought a 5800x3d moving from a 3900x, very happy with the bump. if you have an existing am4 board, I highly recommend it as a drop in
 
I also got my pbo setup to -30 save for the * cores and the average boost in gaming is hovering around 4.8 for me. Darktide seems to be my wildcard for whether I could use the boost of a 5800x3d or not. Only considering AM5 as I can save around $130 now for the mobo/cpu combo, and reselling a 7700 at even half after 4-5 months use doesn't seem like a bad deal to me if it means I can keep fps above 100fps for darktide with rt on.

I'm curious how you are getting 4.8 boost clocks. The max boost speed should be 4550Mhz (100Mhz FSB x 45.5x multiplier). There is no provision to raise the boost clocks on the 5800X3D using PBO. Using -30 curve optimizer can allow your CPU to remain at it's max boost clock (4550Mhz) longer, but it does nothing to increase the boost clock beyond that.

The only way to increase the boost clock would be to increase your FSB. 100Mhz is stock. With a 45.5x multiplier, every extra Mhz adds up, but there is very little tolerance for this. Most systems become unstable past 101-102Mhz or so, making it not worth it. To get 4800Mhz you would need an FSB of at least 105.5Mhz, which would be rare, to say the least.

I think he has a 5900X and not a 5800X3D....
 
In most gaming situations I see 4500, if you look at individual cores, you will see spikes of cores running as high as 4800, even 3dmark hits 4600 avg for me. I've decided to stick to my 5900x. In darktide, the cpu usage hovers around 40% and 4090 is touching 99% usage. Settings are maxed up including RT, DLSS is set to quality and DLSS frame generation on and I'm enjoying fps ranges from 120min to 170s. Avg in 140s.

As I was typing this post, 5800x3d popped up for me locally at sale prices.... guess I am off to the store.

Mine hits 4550mhz out of the box on two different motherboards (B550, X570s) and runs cool. Much cooler than my 5800x. The difference over Zen 2 is HUGE! Never really compared it to the 5800x. With Flight simulator, newest version with FSR 2, 6900XT on the 3960x at 4K makes zero difference using TAA or FSR at any settings for FPS, with fps in San Francisco native 4K, FSR Quality/Balance/Performance) is around 35fps, just tested today. The only difference is with TAA GPU usage is around 95% and with FSR GPU usage just goes down, with performance FSR around 35%. Totally CPU design limited even with 24 cores using DX 12 Beta in the game. Anyone with a Zen 2 CPU can be severely limited with a powerful GPU, even generational back.

Seems to me for a 4090 level card and probably upcoming 7900XTX and 7900XT, on the AM4 platform, 5800X3D is about the only CPU that would not limit as much those GPUs in general. Really, Zen 4 with VCache is probably the real game buster for the 4090/Ti, 7900/50 XTX.
 
Update on 5800x3d. CPU runs hot, on the plus side, darktide got a significant fps boost.

I noticed a significant temperature decrease going from my 5900X to my 5800X3D. But a lot of that could be because I had the 5900X maxed out with boost clock override, etc.

The main downside of using PBO2 Tuner is that it's software based, and you have to set it again after every boot. But so far I've been able to run -30 on every core, and it will stay under 80C even when running Prime95 Small FFT. This is with my Cooler Master ML360R (360mm AIO) with 6 fans in push-pull.
 
I'm running a corsair AIO 280. Idle temps around 47-48C, in gaming I've seen it touch 80C, but on average it's hovering around 72-74C. I was able to get the temp down while maintaining 4350-4450mhz avg by just running a voltage offset -0.06V Under load, I see it hover around 1.19-1.23V vs 1.25-1.3 at stock.
 
Just ordered a 5800x3d to put into my 5800x rig. That'll go to the 3700x. That, in turn, will replace a 2700x

Gotta love the AMD compatibility.

As for any faster speeds...well, I was curious, so now I'll find out.

(As for the next gen...I may skip that, and wait for the gen beyond that. If I have to buy a new mobo and memory, I want to make sure it'll last.)
 
I settled on -0.05 offset and under gaming, temps are 72C. It's just a few degrees warmer than my 5900x was, but seeing consistent 140-150fps in darktide is worth it. V seems to have settled down too, under load it's just asking for 1.07-1.08v. I actually got it working with a -0.25v offset, but it didn't have enough power to hold more than an effective 3.8ghz.

I'd be curious how the 5800X3D fairs in BF2042 now that they fixed the CPU bottleneck. That game legit uses all 32 threads of my 5950X now and its smooth has it has ever been...

You can pretty clearly see even with the task manager view, that it’s really only hitting 8 cores / 16 threads. The other stuff is barely anything.
 
Well, I can confirm it IS the game running even lighter on the other threads, which is quite the improvement for the game from the previous revision. Even if you move lighter threads for the game over, it helps keep the priority threads on the best cores and dedicated. It's pretty easy to read about it on Reddit, even BF admits they improved the MT of the game.

Did the load time lag feel go away? Ive seen few 5900x on the for sale subform for less than 300 and wondering of i shohld move to the 5900x ornthe 5800x3d from my 5800x. It runs hot as fuck when dropping the curve down along with pbo. I need a new aio for it(using an old one i had for a 7700k) but it just randomly shoots up to 85c just sitting there.
 
Load time lag feel is still there. Also shader compilation takes longer. However, FPS are higher. Can’t win them all.

I would say 5800X3D is more future proof.
