Noticed a 2-3% performance drop after updating to 2H22, anyone else have insights into this?

Windows 2H22 has hurt performance it seems:

I did not see any performance regression when I upgraded to 22H2, but at that time 22H2 was still an insider preview. More recently (like last week) I switched from a 5900X to a 5800X3D. I did many benchmarks for both. My 5900X benchmarks were basically the same as when I first benchmarked it over a year ago (pre-22H2) and my 5800X3D benchmarks align with what I see in reviews and from other forum posters.

Your numbers look to be mostly within the margin of error, and could be explained by something as simple as the anti-malware scanner running in the background while the benchmark was running or something trivial like that.

If your system is mainly used for gaming there are a few tweaks that you can try:

Interesting results for Core Isolation, and the Virtual Machine Platform is already disabled

Don't have any links at hand but it is a known problem. Some scheduler issues IIRC. I know reviewers are staying away from it.

Still trying to even see the Core Isolation settings? ^^

got it:

you cpu speed is down 25mhz too. i didnt notice any difference but i didnt do before and immediately after update testing.

It has to be the overall 2H22 Update. No improvement with Core Isolation > Memory Integrity disabled

I'm assuming you tested with SVM enabled in both runs. I had thought most left SVM disabled unless they actually needed it, as it had a performance impact.

Lol! Better call Billy boy and get an iso for windows 12. :D
On a serious note crazy how performance went back up by rolling back to the previous H update. This is why i always wait as long as possible before installing any "updates" epically H updates.

Now with 21H2 and also Approved drivers. The difference between Good and Great

Nice to know, I am working on a Ryzen build for a friend and will look to hold off on 22H2.

On another point:

If you upgrade to 22H2 and you run a kerberos domain on your home network... you won't be able to login without the local administrator account and some reg edits to change encryption preferences.

And, in that environment, group policy is broken as well. This second issue, does not have a fix at the moment.

Note there's two 22H2, Windows 10 and 11. I'll stick with 10 until 12!

FWIW, a number of Windows features can cause Windows to run apps in virtualization mode. For example, enabling WSL will do it, even without enabling Hyper-V and with core isolation off. It's called "virtualization based security" (VBS). VBS can be disabled like this:
  1. Run: Start > Run > gpedit.msc
  2. Expand: Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > System > Device Guard
  3. Double click: Turn On Virtualization Based Security
  4. Set it to Disabled and click OK.
  5. Reboot.
It is ridiculous that VBS is enabled silently by enabling WSL and other features. It can even be turned on by other software, such as games that have anti-cheat mechanisms like Squad or Battlefield. Suddenly ALL processes are being run through a VM layer!

A potentially vulnerable VM layer in the future too, more of the same security by obscurity

Nvidia already fixed this from their end months ago for anyone running the latest version of Geforce Experience.
It was still bad significantly for me, hence this thread. I lost beyond margin of error in performance in a repeatable fashion. Very bad, so if that’s the case I will hold off again because what sense does this make. There’s two simultaneous fixes in place or does it just mean Microsoft updated their drivers to the newer nVidia ones to resolve this? What’s the deal, hmm? 🤔 🧐 🤨

From your Tom's Hardware link:

Microsoft later said that performance degradation was likely caused by some apps and games accidentally enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by general consumers. However, it did not elaborate on why it happened. It also advised updating games. Meanwhile, Nvidia released a GeForce Experience update that fixed the problem in late September

As long as the debugging features are disabled, it doesn't matter how. Anyone with access to new Nvidia drivers already had this fixed a long time ago. Microsoft's fix is probably intended for those who for whatever reason still aren't using the latest Nvidia driver. Maybe it still applied to Kepler (Geforce 600/700 series) and older that got kicked off the main driver branch before the fix was released.

performance isn't fixed in the update, it's the same if not actually worse than before:

Losing 4% performance into the aether is a big deal imho.

I thought it was something I did. I am having the same issue with the drop in performance.
guess i'll revert once again. yeah it's BS .. it got worse if you look at my original comparison

i originally griped about 3% loss

checking back after everyone's hooting and hollering that it's fixed... i'm noting a consistent 4% drop now.

that's a bit if you ask me ... especially when those percentages account for now hundreds of dollars between FE and AIB Top Tiers anymore?

I did not do a full benchmark suite when I first built and setup this PC. I put on W10 because my 970 Evo 2TB had not come in yet. I had a 5 year old WD m.2 that I put W10 on to install, and do the upgrade to W11 to get the license on my account. I ran Heaven, and 3DMark Firestrike Extreme. Heaven went from 244fps down to 235fps. That was consistent between installs. 3dMark showed 3%-4% depending on the run. Everything I have thrown at it runs flawlessly though. Crysis was not an issue. The worst thing is Red Dead 2 at 1440P averaging around 85fps on mostly Ultra. I guess I can't complain too much, so I will stay where I am for a while. Maybe they might fix it at the end of Q1.

yeah 4% performance loss is now several hundred dollars in difference between FE and AIBs, etc... so it bothers me to lose that much. 0.00 to 1% and if it was truly for improved security i'd be OK with

Still have not updated to 22H2... consensus still skip for now I see? BTW, has anyone who has recently tried this "update" checked to ensure VBS wasn't re-enabled after the install?
