Odyssey Neo G8 - 4K 240 Hz 32" Quantum Mini LED

G8 is very intriguing but there's too many strikes against it for me.

1000r curve
32" 16:9 form factor
design aesthetics
scan line issues.

If it was only 1 or 2 of those I would probably jump in because the actual panel performance seems pretty exciting. But collectively there is just too much there I would not be happy with.
 
How do you guys find the latency and motion compared to the AW3423DW or the new 360 IPS PG27AQN?
 
I think its just slightly clearer in motion than the AW3423DW. OLED 240hz would look much cleaner than this but its as good as it gets for a FALD LCD currently.

I understand the curve...not everybody likes the curve....but the other three are non issues.
Your depriving yourself of the best gaming FPS monitor on the planet.

Combined with the 4k resolution, puts it in next Gen Tech territory compared to everything else. Those 175hz oleds are snappy, but 1440p sucks and the pixel structure of those particular oleds is fuzzy too.

G8 is amazing display. Caused me to upgrade my entire rig lol
 
I am not really a fan of 21:9, so I think it’s between the 360 Ultra IPS and the G8 as I feel something like the XL2566K is wasting the 4090.

I just have a fear of compromise on competitive FPS since traditionally the best motion was something like the Benq or now the new 1440p panels.

1440peee is a no go unless its on a CRT playin classic games. Ive never been satisfied with non-crt monitor image quality until 4k became a thing.

I mean they aren't even comparable. One is some globally lit esports trash and the other much more well rounded. If all you care about is motion clarity get the 360hz monitor.
 
How are the G7/G8 with lots of text content? I use my monitor for 90% work (coding), but it seems like the curve will be really distracting for that.

I have a Neo G7 and work with text all day. I barely even notice the curve after a while. Maybe it would be different if I did CAD. What is a problem is the local dimming; it's obviously tuned to minimize blooming, so light text on a dark background can end up dim enough to make it hard to read. This is worse if local dimming is set to "high" or "low", and better if it's set to "auto". Of course you can turn it off completely, but it's not convenient to have to manually turn it on/off for different tasks.

Overall it's ok, and I'm happy to use it for work even though I could easily move everything over to my second monitor instead.

I work almost solely in dark mode in my IDE and terminal. That sounds like it could be really annoying. I'm eyeing the LG 32GQ950-B as well, but the contrast+backlight looks much worse compared to the G7/G8.
 
There is no one stop shop for monitors. You want productivity and dont like a curve then get a good IPS. PG32UQX can be had for a bargain now.

Me personally, I read a lot of contracts and do CADD and G8 is more than fine for me. Curves dont bother me at all. Flat asses and bony stick legs do though!
 
Auto local dimming is borderline no local dimming. I'm not really seeing any issues related to text with it set to auto because it will only "locally dim" based on APL and otherwise maintains a minimum brightness for the entire backlight so it rarely turns zones off. Set it to high and yes the effect mentioned above occurs where your mouse cursor is pretty dim as it tries to mitigate bloom.

Between this and the 32GQ950 is no contest. I would not buy that even if it were $399. Its only real advantage is viewing angles.
 
Also I'm finding out now that the windows HDR calibration tool only affects auto HDR which is currently broken on this monitor anyway because of how blown out the desktop is when enabling HDR. I stated it made 0 difference to the monitors HDR performance based on my eye balls while others saw miraculous differences.

Hopefully we'll start seeing more 4K 240Hz+ monitors at CES 2023 with DP 2.1.
 
They've shown the new Neo G9, will be 7640x2160 dual 4k

Classic case of a monitor WAY WAY out stripping available GPU power. I mean my 4090 struggles to do 200 FPS at 4K in most games on my G8... with the new G9 they are going to double the demand and you need a slower 7900 XTX to get DP 2.1 to run it. And the few ancient games you could run 7640x2160@240 Hz, such as CS, Fornight, Rainbow Six Siege etc, most people wouldn't even want to play those on UW. So basically going to be a productivity screen more than anything for a few GPU generations to pass.

I really hope some of these new monitors have full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports as well for the sake of my 4090.

It really sucks that Nvidia decided to not go with DP 2.1 when all their competition did.

Will be replacing my AW3423DW with one of these tomorrow, keen to see the differences.

I had the Neo G9 before this, am I right to expect a similar experience?
 
Yeah it's basically a higher PPI 16:9 Neo G9 with better contrast, a slightly better FALD algorithm and cleaner motion clairty.
 
So my G8 has started doing the "screen split in half down the middle between left and right side" disfunction. Wonder if it's dying.

I mean WTF is wrong with Samsung. The monitor resets RGB values at random. Why have these things not been fixed. I just hope it's not a "whoops these monitors aren't actually firmware updatable" thing.

Unfortunately that seems par for the course for Samsung displays. A lot of issues go unfixed and then they just pump out a new model which is better. Their displays are absolutely firmware updatable, they just aren't particularly proactive about fixing issues and when they do, there are no changelogs or any info on what has changed. You just hope that your specific problem got some attention.

In the past few years I've owned the Samsung CRG9 and currently have a G70A. Both have their fair share of quirks that are not exactly deal breakers but pretty obvious things that could be improved - small things like slow resolution switching, OSD issues. Maybe they don't want to put in the resources due to cost (rather have the engineers working on the next product) or maybe they know and just don't care because the problem is not big enough for most users.

As an example, the preset functionality on the CRG9 is rubbish. You can assign picture settings but that's it. The newer G70A has preset functionality that actually works where you can assign things like adaptive sync on/off, refresh rate, picture settings etc. They are the same OSD so it would make sense that they would add those updates to the older models but nope, doesn't happen. It seems for the Neo G7/G8 they just ditched this good functionality completely and especially the G8 would really benefit from it by allowing you to push a button to toggle between 240 Hz with scanline issues vs 165 Hz without.

The G70A has a bug where if the display runs at 60 Hz input but the max refresh rate in OSD is set to 120 or 144, it has much more input lag than if the max refresh rate was set to 60 Hz. This only happens at 60 Hz. So I just assigned presets to change between 60 Hz vs 144 Hz for the few things that actually force output at 60 Hz - From Software games and my piece of crap 2019 16" Macbook Pro because apparently supporting above 60 Hz on this display is not happening despite having a Radeon 5300M in it and working at 120 Hz for some 4K displays.

I think Samsung makes some pretty dope display hardware in general but they always have these odd software issues that often don't get resolved.

LG is pretty much the only company I have seen with actually good support for their OLED TVs. Not sure how they do for their desktop displays.

I doubt it. Samsung seems to have kept quite a few of their panels for only their own products. Mainly their IPS displays use some other manufacturer's panels.

They were willing to sell the QD-OLED panel to Dell, MSI, and others though. But even if they don't sell the Neo G8 panel to others, CES is just around the corner and I'm pretty sure there are going to be some great alternatives to the G8 coming.
 
I know this sounds crazy but a 4000hz polling mouse actually looks and feels tangibly smoother on this monitor.
 
Meh. Why? 144 is enough for now. Takes a long time to push frames higher than that in new AAA games with the features on anyway.

I want the PG32UQX at $1500. 😂

DLSS 3 actually makes 240fps a real possibility (Yes yes I know, fake frames, input lag, yada yada yada) I tried it out on Bright Memory Infinite completely maxed out including all RT, DLSS set to Quality mode with frame generation enabled and was getting over 150-160fps at 4K.
