Playstation VR Thread.

At first I was a little disappointed these weren't going to be available for Xmas. At the same time, with a wave of new PC hardware hitting this fall, my wallet should be glad these aren't coming quite yet.
This should give them time to get their ducks in a row with a pile of new launch games and features. I'm hopeful they will have enhanced versions of original PSVR titles, too.

Dual OLED screens with no screen door effect... I'll be in for one if they add PC support. Certainly not buying a 500 dollar console to buy a 400+ dollar headset however.

Don't think that's likely to happen. Both for business reasons (to drive PS5 sales, of course) and just because supporting computers involves a lot of extra development and testing. With that said, PSVR2 with a PS5 costs less than some PC-based VR options...

That's fair, and they're also ostensibly worse. I'd rather have the flexbility of my own machine as well. How else am I supposed to have anime girls in my living room?

The cable will likely drive me nuts in any game where I have to actually move around. I quit using VR for a while until airlink came out as it bothers me that bad. That said I am willing to give it a try in the future after a pro version of the PS5 comes out and there are plenty of games to make it worthwhile.

The choice of cable is really puzzling. It uses an USB cable, which means it uses video streaming. But if you are going to streaming then why not also wireless which is fantastic now that we are used to it? I was almost certain that wireless would be an aftermarket addon but after finding out that the cable is hardwired that is not going to happen. But if you hardwire the cable then why do streaming, which makes image quality worse, in the first place!? Why not use a clean, uncompressed and artifact free signal straight from the HDMI port!?

They're probably using DisplayPort Alt Mode (or some functionally-equivalent proprietary abomination). There's plenty of bandwidth on a USB-C cable to losslessly feed a VR headset.

Can PS5 do that? It does require special USB-C port with that feature after all.

Per the iFixit teardown, it's got a Texas Instruments TUSB1044 chip which does:
  • Protocol Agnostic Reversible 4 Channel Linear Redriver Supporting up to 10 Gbps
    • USB Type-C with USB 3.1 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 1.4 as Alternate Mode.
  • Supports Processors with USB 3.1 and DisplayPort Mux Integrated for Type-C Applications

So... maybe.

Seems you can register for a chance to pre-buy one from directly Sony: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/ps-vr2/register-to-pre-order/

I had zero luck when I tried this with the PS5 launch, but at least one of my friends got one like this. I figure you have nothing to lose at least giving it a shot.
in41. While I'm not expecting much from PS2VR on a technical level - it's not going to come anywhere near pinnacle Pimax 8KX+4090 - the real juice is going to be in the budget Sony poured into VR game development, especially the exclusives.

Insane that a console headset has leapfrogged all PC VR headsets. In.. Sane..

I really liked the PSVR1. Lots of neat exclusive games and even the demo disk that came with it was a blast. Other than not quite being powerful enough compared to PC setups, I disliked how much of a pain it was to setup each time I wanted to use it. Especially because the breakout box wasn't using the latest HDCP so I had to full-on disconnect all of that each time, too. This one seems to be a breeze by comparison. Just plug a single cable into the front of the PS5 and have fun. I dig the new controllers, too. Even though most people rock headphones, it's worth mentioning that a surround sound system works nicely, too. 5.1 or 7.1 can add even more to the experience and it's less claustrophobic, too. IMO, headphones plus the headset can make me feel weird after 20'ish minutes. Just playing audio via my speakers doesn't do that.

Of course it is not. You are comparing setup that is only $1k to another setup that is over $3k.

Looks like I was "selected" to pre-buy the PSVR2 from Sony starting tomorrow. A buddy of mine was, too. No clue if that's a big deal or not considering the price. Then again, considering what all new tech seems to cost these days, it's not that bad.

Got mine this morning as well. 2 friends did, too. I also learned that Sony doesn't take AMEX. Grrr.

I got my invite today and bought it. I bought the package that included the Horizon game and got the charging station. Total delivered was a bit over $700.

I kept checking my e-mail hoping for an invite that never arrived. I'm in Canada and I found out that you can just pre-order it from Amazon or Best Buy. I grabbed the horizon bundle Nov 15 but just checked and Amazon still has pre-orders left. Just a heads up if you're a fellow canuck. I personally can't wait for this headset. I have a Quest 2 and Valve Index but I can't wait to try out the controllers as they have adaptive triggers just like the Dual sense. Oled hdr screens with foveated rendering running at 90-120hz should look great compared to the lcd screens in the VR headsets I have now. The cable doesn't bother me since I'd rather be tethered than have the compression artifacts I get when using AL or VD. I'm connected at 1200mbs to a good 5ghz router and it's noticeable. I'll probably just set up a kiwi bungie system like I have for my rift/Index if the cable gets in the way.

That’s good to know about pre ordering for sure.

I logged on to PS Store via web and didn’t get an invite. Went through the app and got an invite.

I do NOT know if that was anything but coincidental.

Edit. On the USA Amazon site, I could not find it. Nor on the USA Best Buy site.

As far as you know. Can these goggles be used as a TV replacement? Even if the game isn’t VR, use them as a screen?

In that case, even as a screen for Netflix?

With the native resolution and OLED, it would be neat to try.

Yeah, you can. I've never tried it out, but one of my friends used his for that. I believe some of the PS store apps even have special versions so you could watch 3D content. That's been 4 years ago and 3D content has more or less died in the meantime, though.

Thanks. Not really interested in 3D content as much as I’d like a virtual large screen.

Can anyone comment to someone that hasn't ever used VR before, about how far the screen is simulated in front of your eyes?

I am a newb to VR as my son has an oculus quest 2 that I have played for maybe 15 sicken minutes of RE4; this looks remarkably identical to the controllers on the quest 2 but I trust your statements that these are super good. Hoping to use for a VR racing setup (GT7) but yeah. any input as to what makes the PSVR2 good will be appreciated.

One thing is the processing will be done by the PS5 instead of a battery operated chipset. That is pro and a con.

There are lenses in the headset that make your eyes focus a few feet away. I'm not sure what the exact distance is for the PSVR2, but it's called the focal point. You don't really notice it all when you're playing.

Future headsets will have something called verifocal lenses which can simulate looking at something close up or far away to match what you're actually seeing in game.

The focal point is between 1 and 2 meters for most headsets today.

Any reason why this wouldnt work great with a the fanatec GT DD Pro racing wheel and pedals?

Don't see why not. Kazunori Yamauchi said that GT7 will have full featured compatibility with PSVR2 except for split screen. The HMD shouldn't cause any incompatibility with your controller. Both the HMD and steering wheel connect to the PS5 via a single USB-C cable.

Nice. Kind of forgot about preordering this headset. From what I've been seeing, im excited to get it in next month. I'm not anti-VR but pretty meh about it, but keep falling for the next new gen headsets anyway. There is a lot about the PS5VR2 that is very intriguing compared to other current headsets out there.

Looking forward to trying it.
