Assassin's Creed Valhalla

I'll consider it. I have yet to play the other DLC. Might play it all back to back but the fantasy setting isn't appealing to me.

It's on Sale on UBI connect and Epic might have to spring for the Gold edition but the last time that I hardly played the game.

I'm still pissed that the Dawn of Ragnarok is some sort of "other" DLC not included in the Season Pass. If you're not going to include all of the DLC in the Season Pass, then why have a Season Pass at all?

I forgot about that part maybe I just pick up the basic game.

IMO, the DLCs for Odyssey were much better than the ones for Valhalla. I thought both of the DLCs so far were sub par and the 3rd one is behind another $40 pay wall. The base game is enough to keep you busy for a while.

I would play through Origins and Odyssey again. I probably won't play through Valhalla again.

Well it only is for one season. But yes, I hate that. You have gold, season pass, ultimate, then more DLC. Super Ultimate 2x Season Pass Deluxe Edition incoming.

The normal game is absolutely ginormous. If anything, I wish it was smaller and things like Asgard weren't even there. This is one of those situations where I wish the team was working on whatever game is next vs. more DLC. Especially if this isn't something they had pre-promised to people who bought a season pass.

It's historically different than every other AC release. The "gold" edition got all the DLC...period...until now.

It went from a definitely will play to a maybe I'll pick it up at a discount during a seasonal sale if I'm bored. I guess Ubisoft doesn't really care either way. Instead of getting nothing they might get my $5 a year from now for it.

It's a standalone xpac and it has the same price as the base game? Must be massive.

I thought it was $39.99 and the base game at release was $59.99. Could be wrong though.

And I now see that there's an AC: Valhalla "Complete Edition." Fuck Ubisoft and their bullshit. I thought I bought the "Complete" edition when I bought the Gold edition at launch.

I think this is correct. For what its worth, this is one more "year" of DLC than a typical AC game gets, expansion wise, so I don't have a problem with them charging for it if its reasonable. Not to mention I think there's going to be at least one more set of DLC after the Asgard expansion (be it included in the price, free to those who have the base game, or something else) later in the year. Basically this is a "Year 2 Season pass" which many games for better or worse have done.

As for Valhalla it self I can't be too upset about new content at a price after this (not to mention that The Uplay+ sub is $12-15/month and smartly gives you the best versions of everything - ultimate/gold editions, no additional DLC to buy, , so if you might be interested in playing 2 Ubi titles per year you're already ahead financially). The base game is huge and had a lot of free post-launch content made available like holidays, the whole river raids thing - you pretty much always had "something to do" that was meaningful even for repeat content which is something that AC has gotten better at. The first expansions to Ireland and then France were large and easily in line or exceeded previous AC Origins / Odyssey expansions (which were pretty great in their own right) but the previous paradigm has always been to give "2 expansions - on realistic, one fantastic/mythic" . In AC Origins this meant the story continuing Sinai Peninsula / Hidden Ones expansion, and then the Egyptian Mythology focused (Ancient/Isu tech linked) Thebes expansion. For Odyssey this took things even further with the Legacy of the First Blade expansion which was really tied to main-line lore, and then the Atlantis expansion which was awesome and was heavily mythologized in universe showing an Isu society (showing multiple Greek Underworlds - Elysium and Hades, before coming to ancient Atlantis itself - all of which touched on stuff that had more storyline variability and impact than one could think while bringing in stuff from the base game, such as what you did for characters who died in the main quest etc) and setting up the progression of the real world "Heir of memories + Aletheia" storyline. Finally, after Valhalla arrived there was the free mini "cross over " expansion that had content for both Odyssey and Valhalla (and I've only played the Odyssey side so far), closing the book on the former and basically fixing a potential plot hole (ie what did the Eagle Bearer do through ALL OF FUCKING HISTORY when they were basically immortal carriers of the staff of Hermes Trismigustus, and how/why did they not get involved in previous big AC moments - but maybe the Valhalla side will show a bit of that when I play it.

So normally Valhalla should be "done' by now with expansions (critique Ubi on their open world formula if you wish, but I have to give them credit for having REAL expansions like in the old days) but since in Year 1 they did two "realistic/historical" expansions, many presumed that when they said more content would be coming that it would be the "Norse Mythology" expansion which clearly has proven to be the case. Hopefully it will be a good one and I look forward to either another full Year 2 expansion and/or a mini capstone on Valhalla to end things by year's end and prepare for the next title. I can respect the devs not pushing out another AC as fast as possible and letting Valhalla breathe a bit more , though I am curious where it will go from here. I still have a lot to play in the base game and the Y1 expansions so I'll keep my eyes open (if the Atlantis expansion is anything to go by from Odyssey, Asgard will institute some ability/equipment upgrades that are pretty much gamebreaking on earlier content and are meant for the endgame. Given that Asgard talks about Odin's new powers being wielded more directly, I expect this to be the case here which sould be fun. In odyssey the equivalent made you feel like a demigod in most conventional areas, but still go up against difficult enemies in the expansions etc). So yeah, March expansion is an extension and hopefully a welcome one of AC expansion design.

Divine new setting aside, Dawn of Ragnarok doesn’t take the long-standing formula of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to new heights in any significant way. The Hugr-Rip and new host of supernatural abilities are a fun addition to the series, but they’re used so sparingly that they don’t feel vital. Outside of that, my 20-hour adventure through Eivor’s godly alter ego felt much like the last 100-plus hours I’ve spent with them since the main game came out 15 months ago. It’s consistently fun gameplay, yes, but also disappointing and overworn in that I’m starved for some kind of real shakeup to how it plays. Instead, the only surprises left to anticipate are how Ubisoft is going to repurpose systems we’ve already seen every bit of to fit into a new theme and setting. The banality of the mostly unaltered flow of gameplay doesn’t do the celestial locales and story any justice.

IGN wasn't as impressed.

AC Brand Manager: We don't have a new game coming out for a bit. What's the lamest possible way for us to add additional content to ACV?
Literally Everyone: ROGUELIKE MODE!

I have zero interest in Roguelike modes. Nothing more boring than repeating the same thing over and over again, especially when many games (like this one) are repetitive as is.

End of the year there will be another "chapter", which I assume is another few missions of story content. I guess I will wait until then before picking up this game again. At that point it would have been two years since I finished the main game. I don't see why they can't release DLC at a normal pace. It makes me less likely to play all of the game, not more likely.

Roguelike gameplay elements would definitely not work in a game like this. It's perfect for games that are smaller in scope like Hades and Rogue Legacy, though.

It's a roguelite. Separate procedurally generated area, you unlock rewards as you progress. When you die, you keep those but your character resets. It's fine.

Got a question about AS:V, I just got back into it after a few months, had 4-5 consecutive updates, then wouldn't start until I rebooted, finally got it running again. Now when I melee I get what looks like a rain of icicles? They don't do any damage that I can see, but I'm busy fighting so can't be sure of that.

If it's completely separate, then why not make it into a different game?

I appreciate that it's free rather than nickel and diming people for a new game when it isn't needed. At the same time, anything with "rogue" in the description is tired AF. That trend can't die soon enough so that the rare actual good ones get noticed.

I can't be sure, but check what gear you're wearing. It may be some new talent point abilities or something gear related (either a set of equipment together in aggregate, or some particular weapon that has that effect etc). I seem to remember there was something - it may have been given out awhile ago for Amazon Prime - where you'd get a set that gave you both "Fire and Ice" power effects while wearing it, there was an axe that had frost abilities etc.

The ESRB trailer for The Forgotten Saga was set to private, for some reason. Here is the PEGI trailer:

EDIT: The Forgotten Realms -> The Forgotten Saga

I really wish they'd find a way to allow you to buy fish or animal parts - some of them seem impossible to find, even low level ones are a pain in the butt. Not to mention a little guide if a certain animal can only be found in a certain area (ie Reindeer are in Norway, so none of the deer in England will drop the horns you need! Dog fangs, as best as I can tell require you to kill the random NON COMBAT FRIENDLY DOGS in random cities/villages - not those in Eivor's village, I mean those in the various English cities and towns. This is even worse given that they don't even highlight as "prey" animals like foxes or rabbits, so I went for ages figuring that sometime there would be combat, hostile dogs but either they're very few or Iv'e not run into them yet. ) and likelihood of finding certain fish in a given area. Saying it can be found there isn't helpful when the density is crappy and I have to spend time fishing a bunch of stuff I don't want to find one...or worse, it only comes in the "size" I don't need for the quest. I have a handful of Big Brown Trout but I spent over an hour trying to fish up 5 of the small ones for a quest, and I need small and regular for Fishing Hut turn-ins still. Look up a guide for this stuff if you're having trouble, but the game could do much more to make this feel less tedious.

Is there any fix for the crashing? It seems to crash every hour or so in the Ireland DLC. Which isn't too far off from how the game was about two years ago, but I was hoping they would fix the game with all of these patches over the years. Can't seem to find a solution that works.

Honestly not sure what's going on with this. Awhile ago I had horrible crashes, but I came back a patch or two ago and suddenly it was better. It seems somewhat random, related to hardware, drivers etc... but at least for me it used to be fixed but I've not gone to any expansion areas yet.

I know there was a patch last week, and I also updated drivers last week.

A "fix" seems to be to run the game in full screen rather than borderless full screen (I believe that is what it is called). The problem is whenever I select full screen my frame rates essentially halve making it unplayable. I'm going to assume it is just the engine and game, because Odyssey is like that to. Crashes aside, at least most of the other bugs like NPC invincibility, physics bugs, and falling through objects seems to have been fixed in the past two years. I just have to remember to save every 2 minutes. Problem is they don't let you save in enemy outposts which is where the crashes really get to me.I plan to finish the Ireland DLC while I still have Ubisoft + for free.

The French one and this seem to be more of the same. Not horrible, just barely interesting enough to play. My character is so over leveled that I can kill most people in 2-3 hits which makes it play a lot better. But my character is practically invincible now from enemy hits. I suppose I can un-equip all health related upgrades to make it a challenge.
