A new Need for Speed will be arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC this December, featuring the return of Criterion as the lead developer for the first time in close to a decade

titled 'Need for Speed Unbound', Criterion's long-awaited return to the racing scene will utilize new-gen consoles and the Frostbite Engine to deliver 4K 60fps visuals in a free-roaming open world called Lakeshore...the physics will run at a high frame-rate as well, offering "more control and nuance to the physical movement of the cars," creative director Kieran Crimmins says...the game will feature the input of rapper A$AP Rocky, who will have his own mode in the new entry which also marks the franchise's return to its street racing roots

launches December 2nd (Steam, Epic Games Store, Origin)...

It looks like NFS Underground infused with that Street Fighter 6 "graffiti splash" look. I like arcade racers, so I'll probably snag it at some point. I don't necessarily like that aesthetic, but I don't hate it, either.

I'm not feeling the anime aesthetic either...I guess they needed to try something new to reboot the franchise

wat

My favorites are Most Wanted (the first one), Underground 1, Hot Pursuit (the newer one), and Rivals. The first 4 of the old games were all good, but tough to compare to the newer ones.

nope nope nope.
wtf is with this resurgence of "urban/hiphop" feel/looks in games. it hasnt been cool since the ps2 was the hotness....

As much as it seems odd to me, I imagine it's probably what new wave, hair rock, and early hip-hop were like to my parents. I'm sure they were confused why things in the 80's and 90's were "a bad knock off of the 60's and 70's."

I miss Burnout.
God damn did I love Burnout 3.

The first Most Wanted is peak NFS, it really is the best in the entire series.

At least it has a good size car list. No real complaints there except for the number of exotics.

MW 2005 is great, but Underground 2 is still my favorite with Carbon a close second.
If the new Need for Speed game's visual effects are too 'anime' for you, EA says you can turn them off

"Yes, you can turn the effects off," EA said on Twitter. "In fact, you can choose to never put them on in the first place. Just like any other part of a car."

Good to hear, but it looks like Criterion is still confusing NFS with Burnout. If they want to make another Burnout game so badly then they should just do it.

Have to commend them for trying something new in an arcade racer, at least.

Need for Speed Unbound- Speed Race Gameplay

The most in-depth look at Need for Speed Unbound gameplay is here with a first look at Speed Race events including Meetups and Side Bets...

I think it looks pretty good. It's coming out the same day as the Callisto Protocol, so I'll end up buying whichever has the fewest issues on the PC.

Has my interest, but so did NFS Heat before that released and it turned out to be garbage.

i bought it and have never been able to complete a single race. no matter what settings i use or what fixes ive attempted its a stuttery unplayable mess on my sig rig.
this new one looks ok other than the urban crap. might need to find a copy in the ocean to try first, arrrr...

Last NFS I played was Need for Speed: Underground, and after that they all just seemed like crap or bad rehashes with all the good parts taken out, or just crap-tastic performance and bugs...maybe this one has hope?

The game is out on EA Play. You also get 10 hours of free gameplay if you have Xbox Game Pass. Has anyone checked this out yet?

There have been multiple good NFS games since the first Underground. Underground 2, the original Most Wanted, ProStreet, Shift. While I wasn’t a big fan of the Criterion NFS games a lot of people liked their version of Hot Pursuit.

I’m definitely going to have to check it out sometime this weekend.

I've seen at least one "review" on reddit that claims this iteration absolutely saves the franchise. Since its on EA Play, I'll give it a try tomorrow, perhaps

This game is getting very positive feedback, esp from those who were fans of the decade+ old games saying it's a return to form.
Only negative I'm seeing is the police in this one are quite annoying and tedious to escape.
So I just saw that the shitty cartoon effects can't be disabled, no longer interested.
I read you can turn off all the effects except two of the basic ones. The official NFS twitter seems to verify.

I played it for about 2 hours and IMO it's mediocre at best. It's typical Criterion arcade style controls where you drift on every turn to build boost. You also have NPC car AI driving right into your lane to cause crashes. Super annoying. I know some people enjoy this type of car racing but that's not me. I'd rather play Forza Horizon 5.

RTX 4090 has Issues with Need for Speed Unbound that can Only be Fixed with a VBIOS Update

Need for Speed Unbound (NFS Unbound), the latest entry to the popular genre-defining race sim by EA that launched today, unearthed a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics card that cannot be fixed by simply updating the drivers or the game. This is a world-first—never before has a game required a VBIOS update to work around problems.

According to EA, the title exhibits a display flashing/blinking issue on machines powered by the RTX 4090, which requires a firmware update (i.e. video BIOS update). Luckily, this doesn't involve putting your RTX 4090 through a nerve-racking NVFlash manual BIOS update process (not that there's any risk with most RTX 4090 cards shipping with dual-BIOS). NVIDIA has released a fully-automated Firmware Update Tool that can be run from within Windows, which easily updates the video BIOS of the RTX 4090. We confirmed that it is in fact the video BIOS that is being updated (by comparing the VBIOS dumps before and after using the tool).

That's weird, I played the game for 2 hours last night and didn't notice any flashing/blinking issues.

Edit: It seems that this doesn't affect all systems. Only certain UEFI SBIOes need this firmware update.

This is a WTF moment where since when does a game get to dictate your god damn vbios versions.

My last favorite nfs game was underground 2. After that the rest of the nfs games just really trailed off for me, I also went big into modding my own real life car for real power around that time. I still got nfs games but something just got lost in the last dozen versions.

Getting old sucks. Remember, when we were kids in the 90's and we looked back at the 60's is the same amount of time between now and our kids looking back at the 90's
