42" OLED MASTER THREAD

These will fit upto m6x30mm without spacers/washers, smaller lengths are probably fine too as long as there is sufficient 'hold'.

I've got 2 arriving today. aznpotpie , Do you know what size screw you needed for the vesa mount?
Like other's said it's M6 but the spacing is 300x300mm so be on the lookout for that. My TV vesa brackets didn't work and had to buy this to fit onto a 100x100mm bracket.

Yeah I just measured they were M6x16mm. 12mm may be too short when taking into account the bracket itself.

Thanks, All. I just put the first two as side monitors to my 48CX. I’ve still got a bunch of “upgrade” stuff on the way including the third monitor and the vesa adapters.

Running native HDR all the time on the 42C2 just looks a bit weird, can't exactly nail what it is...may be black levels need calibration as the dark cross in windows hdr tool is still visible at lowest brightness vs disappearing on the AW, plus I think the 42 may be too big vertically still...will have to play with it a bit more.

I think the issue is that the tool isn't allowing a low enough value for all OLED displays.

Might be a blessing in disguise, one of mine definitely has a dying controller.
you
DP signal is being recognized less and less. I know it's not the cable or port on the GPU because I did all the swaps and I'm using both on the same computer.
so what's your game plan? refund or exchange? This is why I said to you all earlier, you have to buy from amazon. Newegg, once pass the 30 days, you are out of luck

Asus seems to have discreetly modified the illustration highlighting their Uniform brightness technology. Now on a small window you can clearly see that the screen with Uniform brightness is darker.

They have also released version 031 of their firmware.

Uniform brightness is IMO this things biggest selling point as a monitor. Not having small windows blast your face with brightness is amazing.

HDMI is mandatory for me because DP requires DSC for 138hz so NV control panel will not allow you to enable DLDSR scaling factors.

Well I bit the bullet and went to Microcenter, and had them price match the LG C2 42" @ $999, plus had a gift card for $50 from summer, so got it for $949.

C2 is $999 @ Bestbuy over the next 22 hours or so for those holding off for Black Friday. I don't think it will go lower.

told you kids the prices would dip once demand was sated - on initial release, msrp is high both because of FOMO demand plus lack of manufacturing optimizations we wont see until after 6-12 months!

By next year (final clearance) they will drop the price down to under $800 (wont jump until then)

tf I just do, thing is massive and obviously everything looks convex today coming from a curved screen 🤦‍♂️ Atleast Costco gave me a $150 'customer satisfaction' discount though they don't officially PM other stores so not tempted to get another from BB.

Assuming disabling ABL via service menu does nothing to limit brightness transitions in HDR mode when panning different browser windows for example? That is putting me off this one, good thing the AW is on standby if I change my mind lol. The AW absolutely does not have this issue and you can leave it in HDR mode all the time.
On the bright side, the gray uniformity on my unit is near perfect, similar to the AW and a decent deal so have to test it a bit more, though at almost 43" distance thing feels massive and I am worried about neck strain even with it mounted on a proper stand. On the stand, the tilt spring was too weak and had to jam a small box between the stem and display to make sure it didn't fall back to a neutral angle.
Text is also slightly worse than the AW despite all the experts saying otherwise, and yes, using all the recommended settings/clear type tuning.

You cannot disable ABL in the service menu, that's ASBL which is not the same thing. The full field brightness of the C2 is only 150 nits so I'm guessing you run your brightness higher than that for desktop browsing but below the AW's full field 250 nits so you have ABL kicking on the C2 but not the AW. I have my CX set to 120 nits so I end up never dealing with ABL at all but that does require me to have a dim environment.

Yeah seems that's one of the big advantages of thr PG42UQ since it can do 190nits full field without ABL which is probably enough for most.

Back on the AW, waste of a few hours setting things up back and forth but atleast I am now done with this experiment: the AW is the better monitor for DT use, period. The 42C2 will work for a lot of folks but for me, 38" UW is about the max I am comfortable with so guess this will be it for me until a 38-40" UW QD-OLED panel comes along.
The clinching factor was the text on the AW is just crisper with little visible fringing, the C2 had the same issues as the CX I tried 2 years ago, a bit better but lots of red fringing on small text, on the AW it's barely there after cleartype tuning.

Got it all setup, following this guide;

Played Doom Eternal and World of Warcraft, holy crap Doom looked out of this freaking world, just drool worthy cool.

Both games though looked a bit too bright too me, I have the brightness in HDR remaining at 100. But what did help was changing the Game Optimizer setting to Dark Room 2, my Office is in my Basement, no windows close. What's your opinion on brightness settings or that Game Optmz settings?

Nice, reserved for pickup tomorrow. Should be a nice change from my CX 48 which is too big for anything but single player gaming.

I actually reserved two lol, one “open box excellent” to try first for $870 and one new one if the open box doesn’t work out.

6900XT at $699 and this at $1000 is about to kill me. The 40 series is meh with the pricing right?
so I don't want to spend that much on a video card to run this monitor, what is a half decent or minimum video card I need? as I don't play any PC games

We all have different tolerances and sensitivity but must admit in the last week I have moved from a standard Dell U4919DW PC monitor to the C2 and don't see anything too negative in the way it displays text. Sure I had to turns off ASBL in the service menu since that was obvious and annoying, but otherwise I am enjoying my new work desktop with true black and vibrant colours. Will be great for gaming too when I get to that.

How are you finding the oled flicker on your eyes?

speaking of text, I imagine a lot of us is curious to see how sharp the text is on these display. Can anyone post a 10 pt. to 12 pt. font text paragraph on a web browser or word processor

Ok having this LG C2 42" since yesterday, first impressions;

- It's large, like really big. Coming from my Alienware 3420DW ultrawide monitor, which I was starting to think was to narrow, not enough vertical space, now I'm thinking this extra height isn't noticeable as much, because I need to look up and down to see it.

- Don't like how it interacts with the PC and Windows. Like when my computer is asleep and I go up to to it, and tap the space bar to wake it, the monitor doesn't come alive, I need to grab the remote control and press it to wake it. And it doesn't go right to the Desktop either I need to select the input. Is there a setting in the LG Settings to change this?

- Colors for being an OLED they don;t seem as vibrant and pop like I'd expect. yes the blacks are inky jet black for sure, love that, but colors seems a bit washed out almost. And I did configure the settings per that TFT Central guide too.

- And not sure if it's my old eyes, but text seems a bit blurry, sort of hard to read on webpages.

- Using this, I do feel like I have a TV plugged into my gaming rig, not a monitor, which I knew that, but now it really feels like that.

- Also I forgot how 16:9 compared to 21:9, everything in 4k just seems blown up, extra large in games, compared to my Ultrawide at 21:9 everything in games seems smaller in scale and UI, like more clear and detailed. Like World of Warcraft I'm a big player of this game still, and in 4k, the character is huge, you really need to pay zoomed out, but on Ultrawide the character is not that large looking if that makes sense.

- But on the flip side, playing WoW on such a huge display is very immersive, when playing zoomed further out, the world is alive and feels like you can almost crawl up into the screen and be inside the game LOL. But once in combat that doesn't matter, I'm not paying attention to everything in the background, just focus on fighting the monsters, so just looking straight dead center at the display.

Overall review after a day. I like it, don't love it. Not as wow'd by it as expected, mostly the vibrant super punchy colors don't seem to be there, but for dark games like Doom Eternal, F yeah it looks amazing. For World of Warcraft my main game it's just ok. And desktop use it's a big boy, almost too much.

Overall so far I'll rate this a 6.5 out of 10.

I believe the AMD 6500 has HDMI 2.1 so you should be good there and much cheaper than a 6900XT.

I agree with most points you made, that's why I returned mine because my point of reference was the 23DW which is QD-OLED. At some point size becomes too much for DT use, I think I could have gotten used to the size over time but with the other stuff, just didn't feel worth the hassle of of tweaking a 100 different things (you can set it up to wake with Windows using ColorControl for example).I suspect a lot of folks using the 42 now would prefer a 38-40 curved UW instead, much more comfortable for single person DT use IMHO, very little eye/head movement needed to go from one edge of screen to other. LG already has a 45" curved OLED but with a stupid 81 dpi coming out, they just need to make their 40" 5k2k screen OLED , probably do 100-120 Hz at native res coz of bandwidth limits but have the option to do higher refresh rates at lower res like 1600/1440p UW.

Some thoughts from a guy who actually went from the AW3423DW to the LGC2

- It's large... but I got used really fast to it. Now when I look at a 27 or 32 at friends, I can't believe they are playing on these ipad screens.
- I never understood that need to wake from it. I just close the TV when I leave the desk and open it when I come back. It takes less time than changing input on the AW which felt like an eternity
- Agreed that the colors looked better on the AW. But the gloss finish of the LG makes the black looks better.
- I felt the text quality was on par with the AW. In both case I felt it's a non-issue.
- Still not sure if I like 16:9 or 21:9 better. The days I like the 21:9 better, I tend to use that format on the LG C2. But not sure what would be the long-term impact of doing so.

I personnally would give the AW3423DW a 8.5/10 on the LGC2 a 9/10. I've tried about 10 monitors in the last year and these two are by FAR the best ones. THe 3rd spot would go to the AW2721D (HDR600) with a 7.5/10. But it's not even in the same league.

The one beef I always had with my AW3420DW was the short height of 1440p, always wanting or looking for more vertical space.

Ok, now I have 2160p, tons of vertical height, and LOL, it doesn't come in as handy as I expected, because to see the extra height you need to physically look up, and look down to really notice it all. When gaming your eyes are typically focused right on the center, and then a bit to the right and left. But the height you really need to tilt your head up and down to see it.

I'll give this C2 the week before deciding. But I guess I kinda like Ultrawide more than I ever expected.

I wonder what a 38" 3440 X 1600 size would be like?
