42" OLED MASTER THREAD

Gona try this soon when I get home.

Does HgiG make a difference?
Will try that also.

Looks like the normal PG series 3 year warranty from Asus does not apply to their OLED's. You get 2 years instead which is still not bad.

I think it will land at $1399 US here. Maybe $1499.

Just spent several hours playing CyberPunk 2077 and switching between the Neo G9 and the C242.

They are both very high quality HDR displays imo.

-The C2 feels more immersive because of the much larger height in real estate.

-The C2 can make small highlights pop, which look really good, but the NG9 does this too.

-The C2 looks very good in darker areas of the game, but the NG9 is very close to perfect blacks so nearly identical here.

-Unfortunately, the brighter scenes in the game, i.e. sunny day time, walking around in the city, or in the desert open areas, absolutely looks much worse on the C2 because of the ABL. It is very noticeable, the screen is so dimm compared to the Neo G9 here, it is like wearing a pair of sun glasses and viewing the screen. The NG9 absolutely destroys the C2 in these situations because of the very high sustained brightness at the larger window sizes the NG9 can do. On the NG9 these scenes look so much more alive and vibrant! Its really unfortunate, because I like playing games where it is bright and sunny in the game. The C2 just cannot compete when the brightness windows size gets larger.

But still, I am unsure which one I want to keep, because the C2 does feel alot more immersive due to it's height. The NG9 is far too narrow. If the NG9 was larger in height, I would hands down pick the NG9. This is why I might have an attempt at the 32" Neo G8, but I have a feeling 32" might still be too small.

According to this guy:

Game optimizer mode seriously dimms the screen and he advises against it.

Is this true?

He says he uses some iso preset mode which brightens up the screen. When I get home and have time again I want to test this as my saving grace to keep this display.

But does that mean being outside of game mode we will experience other undesirable things like high input lag?

Can anyone else chime in on what the guy is saying in the video linked above about the C2 brightness in game optimizer mode? Thank you.

You should read a few pages back where I posted measurements between modes from both Rtings and TFTCentral and information regarding this. Game Optimizer is 25-35nits less bright than Standard. You do take a minor input lag penalty for not using Game Optimizer but its only an additional 4-5ms in exchange for a more accurate and slightly brighter picture (ISF/Filmmaker modes) as long as the input is labeled as PC or Gsync is enabled.

For anyone interested JJ from Asus confirmed late August or early September for availability of the PG42UQ and PG48UQ in America.

Any idea how much brighter the Asus version can get over the C242?
TBH I don't think it will really get substantially brighter because the panels are limited by the pixel size relative to the larger models They are really only advertising 900nits on a 3% window but that is a pretty irrelevant window size. 10% and 25% windows may get like 30-50nits improvement over the C2 but I don't imagine bigger window sizes that you consider dim for outdoors games to really see a huge jump.

If the heatsink implementation is legit than its not brightness that will be the draw, it will be the panels durability from lower operating temp as seen from Panasonic OLED's with heatsinks that have been tested to exhibit extremely short temporary image retention or none at all next to non heatsink LG OLED's. That and the DP input + 138hz as well as a calibrated sRGB mode (calibrating OLED yourself is tricky).

but isn't Gigabyte being 3 yr.? I thought it's still the same panel from LG? So where did you hear they are only 2 yr. ?

Ah man, I followed tftcentral guide, tried non- game optimizer modes, tried everything for hours, but the serious dimming of brightness ingame is just too hard to bear. It almost hurts my eyes! How the hell do Oleds get the label of being the best HDR Gaming displays! I mean if you are playing dark games only, then yea I agree they are the unbeatable, but godamm, any open world games in bright sunny days ingame is just atrocious to witness on these Oleds. I am sorry if I offend anyone, its just my opinion.

I decided to pack it up and out it goes. I will never again buy an Oled display for HDR gaming until they can sustain high brightness on larger window sizes if microLED isn't available and affordable by then.

I don't notice any HDR dimming in gaming. Honestly, I have none. In movies though, it is insane and basically unusable, but maybe it is because I switch to Filmmaker mode, instead of GameOptimizer. Too late though to comment because you already sent it back. In any case it is possible to disable the ABL via the service menu.

For Far Cry 6 I had to lower the OLED Light down to 50, because it was too painfully bright during the daylight. Even at 50, looking directly at the sun is painful. No dimming I noticed, and I think I definitely would, if there were any.

Interesting you say this.
I have it side by side still with my Neo G9. Getting ready to put it up for sale. And the C2 dimms considerably for me in open bright areas of the game. It's hard to explain, it's like all the large bright surfaces in game (mountains, rocks, footpaths etc) have a thin transparant black film placed over them on the C2, it maybe hard to notice, or it may not bother some people or they may not even notice it all, but on my NG9 all the same surfaces are bright, vibrant and no loss of detail at all. It's so much more appealing to look at. I just assume the C2 cannot handle keeping these large surfaces bright and lively looking. It maybe just my eyes, but I can seriously discern the difference between the two.

The ABL dims the whole screen, not some parts of it. It must be something else then.

I think prior generations had far more noticeable ABL in games/movies. On my C1 and C2 I don't see any ABL basically ever. You have to keep in mind that most of the time HDR is pretty low APL so of course in worst case scenario a games skybox + desert environment expose OLED's limitation but the other 75% of the time it destroys the G9.

I dunno if you're seeing what I'm seeing but the G9 literally looks hazy/undefined because of the contrast difference. You're describing the Samsung as almost OLED blacks but its not even in the same dimension. G7/G8 is quite a bit an improvement in that regard but its partly because its so much more aggressively dim.

Yea I have been able to get the C2 less dimm by playing around with the settings. It is starting to look a ton better to me! Finally lol!

I will take back most of what I said. I apologise, it does indeed look bloody darn good in all scenarios now, not just the dark scenes.

Not sure what settings I changed, but far it looks way better than my G9 now! I have totally changed my mind again lol

EDIT:
I think it was Reshade setting from when I was using the G9 to darken the screen via levels.fx, I forgot it was automatically active when I was testing the C2. I lowered it to prevent darkening the screen, and the C2 came alive alot more. I feel like a douche bag now.

PG48UQ video but in Mandarin

there is no way to use those USB 3.0 port. The design is not that good. From that video, that guy is putting a WD Passport at the top, in which it will either drop or dangle from that location. USB port should be on the side, and preferably at the lower half of the side. Having said that, USB Extension is not a deciding factor for me, eventhough my current monitor, I just start using USB 3.0 extension. Worst case, I'll buy myself an USB 3 adapter

I'm thinking on buying the 42" LG C2

I have a Gigabyte Vision RTX-3080, can someone please link a good cable for my 3080 connecting to this LG?

Right now I have the AW3420 Ultrawide, using a Display Port cable, but doesn't this LG use some different cable type? Not DP?

any high-quality HDMI 2.1 will work

No worries, it happens! I'm just glad you're finally starting to see what the thing can do. I was thinking...I've never used the G9, but on paper the C2 should easily compete if not spank in most areas.

I took the Rtings scores from their Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 vs LG 48 C1 OLED Side-by-Side Comparison and quickly threw them into Excel just to easily compare. I think most trust them as one of the better authorities on displays by this point.

Green = wins
Yellow = loses
Red = loses by a lot

Edit: messed up my chart bad lol, should be fixed now.

Um did you even watch the video? The top USB port is right beside the webcam/camera/tripod threaded insert to conveniently attach said accesory without having to dangle a USB cable down. There are other USB ports where the rest of the IO is.

Lastly, who the hell is attaching external HDD's to monitors. Jesus Christ.

What's the immediate settings to adjust as soon as turning this display on to use as your PC monitor / gaming screen?

Any guides or YouTube videos?

Also what about burn in? Do I need to turn on a screen saver in Windows 11? Currently my desktop just stays on until the monitor goes into sleep mode.

Ah fml!
Just got the C2 when i could wait for this
C2 is a better product.

Why go out of your way to buy an OLED, only to buy one that uses an AG coating to completely wash out the blacks.

Thats like, 90% of what makes OLED special.

It's really not that bad. I got to see a 48GQ900 at a friends house expecting the worst but it ended up convincing me to buy the PG42UQ when its released.

I agree, AG coating is really not that bad at all.
Hey to each their own, but I think saying AG coating is 'fine' against glossy is like saying 60hz is 'fine' against 120hz.

In other words, the only people I've personally met who think it's fine haven't experienced the alternative.

Not all AR coatings are created equal. Like I said its not that bad and no where near your typical thick gross AG coating. You can easily see yourself reflected on these although its slightly diffuse and not the mirror like reflection I see on my C2.

Here's a low bitrate screen cap of a guy who has had his PG48UQ since launch with disgusting food splashes and grime galore:

That is the dream, but there has been zero mention of it. Apparently Samsung will be releasing a 48" QD-OLED next year.
I just want to see 240hz...
There's rumors of a 49" QD-OLED, but it's yet not confirmed if it's a 16:9 4K TV or a 5120x1440 super ultrawide.

But I would expect it will take a year or two before they will release a 42"-ish model and by that time LG could already be offering some smaller OLED considering that they have a 27" 1440p OLED on their roadmap.

I guess these manufacturers are making 1440p vertical res options first as it's easier to get good yields and maybe there's less issue with brightness too.

Antiglare coatings are not equal. I don't mind the one on my Samsung CRG9 which is way better than the one I had on a Dell 3008WFP back in the day. A "not too grainy" AG coating can help manage reflections. Obviously it's nice to have a glossy option if you know you can control reflections well.

With the ASUS PG42UQ you have to deal with AG coating but in exchange get Displayport for convenience, a heatsink for hopefully higher sustained brightness and other desktop display friendly features.

I use this and it works flawlessly:

If the Asus has some form of BFI-Sync, or even just 120Hz BFI at all then that would be enough to sway me over to their side over an LG C2 despite the matte coating. Yes yes I know "nobody uses BFI" but I had my own use cases for it and was kinda bummed that the C2 removed it.
