Odyssey Neo G8 - 4K 240 Hz 32" Quantum Mini LED

The blunder with the G8 is the aggressive coating and not offering also that 165 Hz option out of the box. I could see 240 Hz even with scanlines being a viable option playing e.g a multiplayer shooter that can run at those framerates and then you really don't have time to look at image fidelity.

But as it is, I would also buy the Neo G7 over the G8. If they could release it in Europe that is...
Yeah but if u think about it the 240hz and aggressive coating kind of make sense together while the 165hz and less aggressive coating also make sense together.

240hz I can see being used by someone who has the absolute fastest video card at all times, computer fully blinged out in RGB. 165hz is fast but 240 is faster. And, with all that RGB the super aggressive coating helps.

165hz is fast enough though and for people to prioritize image quality using 165 plus less aggressive coating also pairs well.

So selling these as two separate monitors does make sense. Neo G8 for those that want absolute speed and maximum reduction of RGB reflections (super gamer), Neo G7 for those that want best balance of performance and image quality. The G8 is higher model# and price than G7 again because type of person that would buy that monitor probably prioritizes specs, plus there is probably some extra electronics that enable the 240hz (and also causes the scanlines). I have to wonder with the scanlines and the G8/G9 topping out otherwise at 120hz whether the 240hz is some sort of scan line interleave mode

In other words I don't see the problem with how Samsung launched these , at least until some other company delivers 4k 240hz with less artifacts than the neo G8. The takeaway is for those that prioritize image quality the neo g7 is the best play.

Curious, the OG G7/1440p 240hz had issues with the page below. How do the new 4k ones fair?

https://rog.asus.com/wallpapers

G8 has fainter scanlines than og G7. Some don't have them (though, those claims are dubious.)

The Neo G7 doesn't have them with those wallpapers. That said, my unit developed them over time with a certain shade of green and light blue.

Gotcha, thanks for the feedback. Seems much better then. Possibly due to much higher resolution but damn, sad to hear yours started developing them.

Vega said that his scanlines went away after a while and a buddy of mine also said the scanlines on his og G7 became fainter about a week's worth of usage so it seems to be all over the place.

I am not sure what to get out of the Neo G8 vs C242.

I am coming from a Neo G9, imo it has served me very well, I did not have any issues with it even with all the known quirks of it, none of them bothered me at all.

It's just that the images in gaming on the Neo G9 to me looks very small vertically, and my eyes squint because of it. So I am thinking of trading it for a bigger display vertically.

If you are squinting or leaning in then more than likely you would benefit from bringing the display closer. Run the display at 2560x1440 to gauge how the experience would be in 16:9.

Obviously 4K at 32" will be bigger and will resolve more detail in games but overall we're talking about a difference like this:

Gotta say this is the biggest reach I've ever read for justifying product segmentation. G8 has thicker AR to diffuse peoples RGB case lights, alright. Lmao.

I had the same issue(s). The ultrawide are too narrow and the 32" are too small altogether. So, I went with the 50" QN90A which is the width of the super ultrawide G9 but with the added corresponding height which I love. I got it for 1100 about 6 months ago and it was the best display decision I've ever made lol

Yea nice.
But I would rekon that the pixel density drop at 50" would bother me eventually.

Yea interesting you say 32" is still too small for you. I fear that might be my issue to, I never used a 32" 16:9 display before, so I don't know. Looks like C242 will be the way to go for my preference.

When did Vega say scanlines went away? Just searching the thread it seems he still had them.

Both are crap. The G7 has significant more washed out colors and much less brightness at hdr as the G8 Neo. I know, hardwareunboxed has reported differently. He never checked real world hdr content. Only his test patterns.

I have tested today and yesterday a lot hdr demos on G7 Neo and G8 Neo.

The G7 Neo looks like it has 120 nits. The G8 Neo maybe something around 250 - 300 nits. Even hdr 400 monitor like an Acer XV322QKKV with 16 edge led dimming zones looks much brighter @ hdr than both Samsung Neos. Also the ips panel has worlds better colors. Not washed out like on the va's.

Even the G9 Neo has much better hdr color performance and without hdr than the 2 new 16:9 Neo versions. Also the color shift is enormous.

Especially on grey websites. It looks very ugly. Top is saturated, rest ist heavily lifted, Looks like a silver shine.

I dont understand why only few people are reporting bad hdr and sdr performance. Never seen proper hdr monitors?

I have LG C2 42 inch, Ipad Pro 2021, Macbook Pro 2021 16", LG G1 55" and had a lot other pc hdr monitors like PG27UQ, X27(P), PG32UQX, PG35VQ, AG353UCG, G9 Neo. I know how almost good hdr has to look.

The Samsung monitors are a cheap fake for people who have no idea how good hdr looks. Others will kick this crap instantly.

The qc of Samsung is still a joke. My G7 and G8 Neo have both dust inside the panel. G7 Neo brighter, semitransparent, 7 mm wide dust spot, G8 Neo 3-4 mm wide, saturated, black dust spot.

The G7 Neo has coil whine at low brightness and after watching hdr content. The G8 Neo has heat expansion, popping noises like the G9 Neo with the same cheap, white plastic.

Neither mine or my brothers experience any heat expansion popping and I never experienced it on my Neo G9 either. Unless you are literally insane and willing to unpack/pack and haul a dozen monitors to find a unicorn, every LCD has some form of defect like dust. My G8 has a dust particle in the upper left but its only visible to me on white and I have to be so close to see it that I might as well lock lips with the panel. Dust is the least concerning perceivable flaw these monitors have, the biggest one is DSE (vertical bands/splotchy spots, etc).

I definitely don't agree with Hwunboxed HDR assessment as I mentioned before. I dunno why in 2022 these guys are so fixated on test patterns instead of developing a repeatable real content test suite because I don't stare at 10% windows all day. Its really the same issue as HDTVtest.

It sounds like your neo g7 is defective. There is very little difference vs neo g8 in real world content, neo g8 maybe 5% brighter. There is a windows driver issue for both currently, but both look spectacular with PS5/Xbox

Here is a side by side comparison of the two with console source

I have the neo g7 and had the neo g9 (which uses neo G8 coating) and I noticed my keyboard RGB reflection on neo g7 monitor but not on neo g9, especially when it was dim. With how popular RGB is and emphasis on black levels at the monitor top end, it makes sense for this type of segmentation. Video I posted above this shows the difference between the two finishes, the neo G8 coating controls light reflection much better.

Not sure about the differences on Neo G7 and Neo G8. But I did encounter most of those issues with my Neo G7 and returned it. Washed out colors vs my IPS (especially the bottom half), dim whites even with LD off vs my IPS, and meh HDR vs the OLEDS I tried. And while I thought I wouldn't mind the curve, it was actually really bad and I just couldn't.

Going to just cope that a 32" 4k gaming oled releases in a year or 2 (I've heard rumors of at least 3). Until then the AW QDOLED will be my stop gap.

The thing is that it doesn't appear to be the hardware on the neo g7/neo g8. If you plug an Xbox into it the HDR looks outstanding. There is just something going on with the windows implementation that is not right. Should be fixable in firmware or drivers.

Can you please post photos of the Neo G7 side by side with your Neo G9.

What is your thoughts about the two in terms of HDR performance? Do they both look equally as bright or does one have noticeably brighter HDR highlights etc?

Is the 32" vertical space more immersive and better to game on, or is the 49" horizontal space better in that regard?

The QC on these monitors is utter and absolute trash. My friend is on the 4th replacement from Amazon all with one or two of these giant dust particles or blemishes in the AR. This one has it dead center so when he scrolls its a disaster. Also confirmed with him that all 4 of his had that center vertical DSE band to varying degrees.

But yeah Samsung QC is something else seeing how big this dust particle is and that's right in the center.

Oh yeah but mine is no where near as bad as the 4 of his. His are the size of a 100 pixel cluster where as mine is like 2-3 pixels in circumference. I just think its obnoxious that something like that gets shipped.

Samsung's might not be the best, but it's not nearly as bad as gigabytes. I had to go through three FV43U panels, only then the fourth one had no dust particles in it LOL that's 25% success rate pretty terrible.

@xDiVolatilX

Your gigabyte monitor (tv :D) is using AUO crap panel. I had 11 PG32UQX (AUO panel) for each 3500 Euros, 9 with dust.

I had 15 G9 Neo ordered over a half year span. 13 with dust. 1 clean was dead after 1 day, the other had loud popping noises and very bad scan lines. I gave up ordering further G9 Neos.

Even a laptop (from year 2010) with Samsung tn panel had dust. Mostly any (had maybe around 80) Samsung sva panel i had up from 2016 (when first 100 hz 21:9 3440 x 1440 panels came up) had dust. Dust/dirt free "Samsung" (CSOT, AUO whatever) panels are very, very rare. Would say 1 of 10 - 15 maybe.

I was thinking today about keeping G7 oder G8 Neo which i still have no return label from Samsung for, but after checking the pictures of the dust, im still not willing to do it.

Im now sticking with a 38GN950 with a 30 day return window. So im not hurry to get an suitable "uptodate" monitor.

Keep in mind, only lg ips panels mostly (dust panels are very, very rare, saw them maybe 3 times on ~100 LG panel monitors) and newer Innolux panels (2020+) are clean. BOE, CSOT, AUO, Sharp have mostly dust/dirt.

Sadly these monitors have no fald :(. Beside the PD32M (Innolux ips) with heavy coil whine, very bad blooming and pwm dimming (headache).

You need serious help.

Nope, iam monitor tester. I have tested nearly every wqhd - uhd gaming (also some special fhd monitors like the PG259QN(R) and some special 60 hz uhd displays like the 32EP950) monitor since 2015.

Iam only accepting monitors without major flaws.

Rtings early test results for the G8 look identical to the G7 when it comes to HDR. Check out the macro shot of the subpixel layout to see how disgusting the AR coating is.

The ag-coating isn't disgusting. There are way more grainy ag-coatings on other monitors. Like the LG 27GN950 oder PG259QN(R) for example.

The main problem of the Neo G8 are the scanlines. They very disgusting. Very visible on any more saturated color.

Just because something else is worse doesn't make the G8 good. I just see no point in very aggressive AG coatings especially for gaming monitors. People seem to prefer the less obvious coating on the Neo G7. I don't know if it's similar to the one on my CRG9 but I don't mind that too much.

The Neo G8/G7 models are an odd bunch. Why does the G7 have a different AG coating? I thought it would be just built with "lower" quality panels that don't pass for the G8 240 Hz. Has any reviewer opened them and checked if they have the same panel but a different variant perhaps (to indicate the different AG coating)?

G8 isnt good, but the ag coating is a minor disadvantage compared with other flaws like scanlines, dse, color shift, dimming algo + hdr tonemapping broken, popping noises and very wobbly stand.

G7 is using a much slower panel. Tested it. The motion blur is @ 165 hz way more worse than on the G8 @ 240 hz. It's looking like some very slow without major black smearing.

But remember the G8 Neo is only very fast at 240 hz. I played yesterday cs go with 120 hz. It was so blurry.

The G8 looks like those older IPS panels with fuzzy coating in the name of AR from the rtings pic (HP ZR2440W anyone?) ...
