Odyssey Neo G8 - 4K 240 Hz 32" Quantum Mini LED

Tested the G8 vs the 42C2 and there is no comparison across the board. G8 returning to Samsung.
I don't even know what to make of this photo. You sure HDR is "working" correctly because it really has issues when cloned across displays especially on the non primary.
 
I have separate videos playing on extended displays and paused them at the same spot in HDR. Yes the camera is over-exposing a bit as you can see on the OLED but the G8 in comparison really has that much blooming. It's even in the "Auto" FALD setting with the best settings I could get.

FALD settings of "Low" and "High" actually made it look worse if that's possible. The Samsung FALD algorithm just crushes near black highlights in HDR too to minimize blooming. I really do not like it.

But what about gaming performance ? I've now gotten used to the G8s 240 hz, dont think I can go back down to 120hz

IMO it comes down to what games you play. If you play something like PUBG or Fortnight at 240 Hz, G8 is a better display. I think the 42C2 is a better overall gaming display, especially considering in most modern games it's a struggle to reach 4K/120 FPS/Hz with higher graphics settings let alone double that with a OC'd 3090 Ti.

Yeah that looks pretty terrible but its expected when comparing OLED vs FALD. Just wish they went accurate at the expense of bloom like the PG32 instead of doing all this wonky crap with FALD based on APL.

Yeah, I noticed a bit of that behavior when comparing the PA32UCG vs PG32UQX. The ProArt monitor isn't as aggressive as Samsung's G8/G9 but I remember thinking as much as the PG32UQX makes blooming more apparent, I actually preferred how the PG32UQX displayed the image in the vast majority of scenes. The image and behavior just felt a lot more "consistent". Having seen the differing FALD algorithms is useful because at least now, I don't think "What if Asus had tuned to xyz?" anymore. We have the different approaches for controlling FALD and can see the tradeoffs for ourselves. I get why some will look at these comparisons and decide they'll go with OLED/QD-OLED instead.

Based on everything written here thus far, I think I'll just stick with the PG. Shame because that 240Hz and 32" size spec are so desirable.
 
Yea its called a dark scene. FALD BLOWS in the dark....Oled owns the night!
To be fair that picture is obscenely overexposed to the point where whats visible on the G8 is undecipherable without the C2 showing a identical image. In real life it will look nothing like that at all and I know because he's got his C2 looking like its a FALD display.

That's almost exactly how it looks in real life and why I posted the image. And no, the image is not "obscenely overexposed". The desk and the rest of the room clearly indicate the camera is not over-exposing. This is lens glare on the camera from the OLED not "Bloom":

The G8 actually handles some difficult scenes really that poorly. You can get a G8 and test it yourself:



Both displays were set at their maximum HDR brightness, which isn't unreasonable for a dim room as they both only output a max of 800-1000 nits. The G8 FALD set on "Auto".

The worst part about it is FALD doesn't need to be anywhere near that bad. My 85" Samsung QN90A in comparison that can do almost 2,000 nits with its FALD/VA panel has an order of magnitude less bloom than the G8, at almost twice the brightness. That special/high-end FALD tech they use in TV's never makes it to monitors.

I watched that same video on my G8 and it doesn't look like the picture you posted (note that I was sitting directly in front of the monitor). What settings are you using?

You did it in a dim/dark room? Makes a massive difference.

100 Brightness, RPG picture setting, obviously HDR on, FALD "auto". Now that it's light outside I'll check it again.

EDIT: Make sure Contrast Enhancer is turned off.

Even in a lit room, the ceiling and barrels in the dark HDR scene can be seen on the OLED, not so much on the G8.


Then I do a factory reset on the G8 then this happens:

That block #1 should be one minute step up from pitch black, almost indistinguishable from the black background. These are the factory settings which are atrocious. Then you adjust the image so that black level isn't raised to ridiculous highs, then near black/shadow details like originally posted are almost completely hidden by the FALD algorithm with noticeable blooming in dim/dark rooms.

Anyways, G8 is now packed up as I have no interest in further testing it now that I have the 42C2.

I have Contrast Enhancer on. Now I'm not going to post in here saying that the FALD on the G8 produces no blooming, that would be a lie. What I will say is that this monitor does a very good job mitigating the effects of blooming. Videos with multiple small light points throughout the image will never look perfect on this monitor compared to OLED. There's not enough zones for that. As a comparison Apple's Macbook Pro has a 16.2" 3456 X 2234 display that uses 10,000 mini LEDs. That display is as close to OLED as you can get right now using LED tech.

You make some valid points but also note that using an OLED TV for desktop work does have it's drawbacks. Try to hide the taskbar and don't keep static images on the screen for too long. By default LG OLED TVs have aggressive ABL settings to help dim the screen if it detects a static image which sucks for desktop use.

Yes, OLED isn't perfect either. BTW with the LG service remote you can virtually disable the screen dimming. One of the first things I did when I got my 42C2.

BTW how are the Scan lines on your G8? My sample was really bad with blues and oranges. I've considered keeping the G8 for PUBG as it's the best monitor in the world for that... but I hate having multi monitors now.

I honestly didn't notice scan lines. Post some source images that produce it if you can.

I consider 32" 4k 120hz+ as my best potential format. So getting the Neo G7 and/or Neo G8 at around the same price as other typical 32" 4k gaming monitors (after discounts) still seems like the best play. Can't think of a better alternative, until a 32" 4k 120+ hz OLED comes out. Just waiting for them to get here.

I'm in the same boat as I wanted more desktop space than my CX 48" scaled to 125% can give and it got a bit unwieldy with multiple virtual desktops and is not well suited for multimonitor setups. I find that for me 100% scaled 2x 1440p is enough space but would prefer better text sharpeness for work. So 32" 4K seems like the appropriate option, thinking of getting the LG DualUp as a side monitor for that.

Also interested in the Neo G7 if it doesn't exhibit the same issues as the G8 considering all IPS options seem like even worse. I considered the 42" OLED but since I will be mostly using it for work after all it's just better to focus on something that works best for that and compromise a bit on the gaming/HDR side. Or just use my CX 48" in the living room for gaming.

My post was just related to image quality. I'm well aware that anything Apple makes is not geared towards gaming. This also brings up a good point. Are there any FALD displays with very fast response times? Sony recently enabled VRR and ALLM on their TVs but doing so disables FALD.

Sony also just released an update that enables FALD with VRR this week. Only the X900H with the ghetto chipset that halves vertical resolution @ 4K/120hz is excluded. All of those Sony TV's are just typical smeary VA's though and not really suitable for high refresh rate.

I'm sitting about 2.5' away from the screen and I'm not seeing scan lines. My desktop is scaled by 150% via Windows 11 and I'm using Google Chrome to view the web page you posted. The AR coating is visible but I'm not seeing lines through the graphics you pointed out. Can anyone else with a G8 confirm?

Interesting. If you go to this time stamp and compare the top and bottom, that's what mine looks like:



It makes the image look lower resolution than it is.

OK so I used that KBB.com site as reference and switched between 120 and 240 several times. From my sitting distance I don't see any difference. If I move about an inch away from the screen I do see a faint grid effect. This is not a deal breaker personally but it might be for some [H] members. Not sure what Samsung is doing to be able to run a 4K monitor at 240hz over DP 1.4 but some type of compression must be happening which might be the cause of that grid or scan line effect.

Except the G7 also suffers from scanlines and as far as I'm aware no compression is needed to do 1440p 240Hz over DP 1.4 so compression isn't the issue.

Chatted with customer service, he said any order saying July 14th and later is actually on back order for both monitors. They ran out lol. I think I'll just wait, I really want these crazy deals.

It's the scaler or display driver IC that's likely at fault. G7, G9, Neo G9, G8 all use different panel models #'s so the likelyhood of all the panels being the culprit is low.

It's bad but on the other hand it's also uncharted territory with Samsung really the only one pioneering. We have super fast pixel response VA's and 240hz DSC monitors being released while everyone else has been regurgitating the same garbage.

At this point they've just settled with pushing these products out the door because the majority don't notice scanlines and the people who do like those here and other forums are a tiny minority given the huge volume of monitors they sell. A Neo G7 has 2x the zone count and is 32" compared to a CM GP27-FUS yet they cost the same (Neo G7 actually less expensive with stacked discounts).

Yeah mine got delayed to late July so I cancelled. Samsungs monitors always have sales so not really conerned about losing the discounted price.

EDIT: They told me its backordered this past Monday yet you could still place orders. Just now its completely OOS.

Yeah I guess so, monitor market has been moving so slow that I'm still using an Acer X27 from 2018. This is seriously the longest I've ever held onto any single monitor, although I guess that's not actually a bad thing given I paid the full $2k MSRP for this thing right at launch. Perhaps I'll give the Neo G7 a shot once it goes on a deep discount.
 
Neo G7 update: Sent my first one back due to poor uniformity and a 2" vertical band on the right side of the display. Received my 2nd panel today from amazon. Much better uniformity on this one, still has the 2" vertical band just like the first one. Though primarily seen during 12.5% grayscale so I could probably live with that issue.

Getting quite a bit of flickering during gaming most prominent during loading screens. Even the little steam icon that pops up on the right side while you're loading into a game flickers. Tried two different DP cables, updated nvidia drivers with no improvement. I tried VRR control and this got rid of the problem, however seemed to introduce input lag so I turned it back off and the flicker returned.

Anyone else with the Neo G7 or Neo G8 notice this issue or have a suggestion to try?
 
Flicker during loading screens on most displays with VRR is unavoidable. Lots of big frametime spikes and heavy IO causing wide refresh rate swings that the monitor can't handle so it flickers.

If its not happening in game I really don't care TBH.

Yeah game developers just need to learn to cap their framerates during loading screens. For me the worst VRR flicker issues have been when a game is at the transition between LFC and VRR, usually 48 fps/Hz on Freesync screens. That can be annoying if it fluctuates right in that area. With some of these newer screens using 60-240 Hz range for that I could see it being more of an issue at 4K.

Has anyone checked what the minimum for VRR is on the Neo G7/G8? 48 Hz or 60 Hz?

Its 48hz but the monitor transitions to LFC at around 80+ FPS I think to preserve the pixel response.

A few years ago monitors were really bad with the LFC transition but now days its transparent to the user and none of that stutter or wonky overdrive stuff happens.
 
This is a great deal but after reading everyone’s experience with it I am just going to wait for the Alienware 34” which right now it is supposed to be delivered in 3 weeks. I wished this monitor didn’t have an agressive curve and I would be jumping on this.

Snagged it for $1,099, It's funny how it's cheaper than even the G7 on Amazon. I'll be comparing it against my Alienware QD-OLED, I've come to realize I'm not a fan of 1440p so maybe this monitor will suit my needs better.
