Doom Eternal

Usually Doom Eternal tells me when it wants a newer GPU driver after receiving a patch:

And if I don't update, I usually experience some graphical glitches and very minor performance issues, nothing major. I thought it was pretty handy that before the game even launches, it tells you that you should probably update your GPU driver. Nevertheless, I usually don't update when the game tells me to, and for the most part it still runs fine. But obviously that's just for my particular system, can't speak for everyone. Sometimes updates do break games, sometimes newer GPU drivers break games, never really been much of an issue in the nearly 30 years I been gaming on PC.

On the other hand, I had an issue with UT3 where it ran fine from Fall 2014 until Summer 2021, then all of a sudden developed an issue where if I move the mouse, the framerate tanks hard, from well over 300 fps down to single-digit fps. I was never able to figure it out, eventually uninstalled the game. That's the PC gaming life for yah.

Too many of you in the PC gaming community are nothing but trolls and hypocrites and get a hard-on when people have problems or complain about anything.

the irony...if anyone posts about an issue that you don't have then they are lying...if you have an issue then it means everyone must have it or they are lying...if anyone dares asks a question that you deem to be obvious then you troll the post with 'do a Google search'...you have a very strange way of posting...maybe it's a language barrier as I'm guessing from your user name that you are French

Where have I ever said that someone is lying about an issue if I don't have it? Sounds like that poor reading comprehension of yours is rearing its head. Yes I have said the opposite of that actually. I only point out when people are oblivious to what is clearly a game issue such as the stuttering that used to be in RE Village. It was proven to be a game issue that impacted EVERYONE yet some clowns on here claimed to have never had it and blamed other users. Not noticing it is one thing but being a tool and saying "oh it must be your pc" is always hilarious when it turns out to be the actual game. Being a lazy fuck and not doing even a simple google search on an issue only adds to the problem. Really all the hell you do is troll every comment I make here.

Take it easy.

It seems to be more of an issue in the last few years as games and drivers have gotten more complicated. And sometimes an issue can go on for months without being fixed even though its a known issue. I mean sometimes the dumbest thing can get broken. The Tomb Raider updates a week ago broke the games and had to be rolled back and there has been no news since. Nvidia in the same week had to release a firmware update for some of their cards to help address the numerous black screens people have been having. The list goes on and on and so sometimes it just gets frustrating if you are like me and play lots of different games which increases the potential of running into more issues.

Dealing with comments like this from the pc community is also tiresome.
If you're not finding PC gaming enjoyable and the community bothers you (admittedly, I was poking the bear) - why not make the change? Shelve the machine for a while and see if you like being away from the additional overhead that this hobby requires.

As I said, I have way too many pc games or I would just switch over to console. I also have some VR titles that I really want to play and I am trying to get through the enormous pc games backlog. Really I don't play on the pc anywhere near as much as I used to and have spent more time on consoles in the last month. It is so nice just to turn on my PS4 or Xbox and play a game without any nonsense.

IMO, PC gaming is still the way to go. Yes, tweaking can be required sometimes (particularly if you have something not widely supported, i.e. a 21:9 monitor). But I have played a wide variety of games and have never (or so rarely that I don't recall it) had to switch to a different driver. Knock on wood...but games just run on my system. Sure, I might have to apply a patch or a tweak when playing an older game that was coded during the Win98/2000j/XP eras, but most things run just fine.

I can't do consoles anymore. Yes, they tend to "just work" but I got tired of firing up my PS3 and having to wait minutes for a software update each time. Plus, mouse/kb is far superior to a controller for most games (racing/fighting game aside, which I don't play much of anymore). Graphics and frame rates tend to be much better on a PC also. Recent consoles have reduced that gap, but PCs will always pull ahead due to frequent hardware releases vs. console refreshes which only occur every several years. Yes, it's more expensive to get that elite experience on a PC. Yes, it can require some troubleshooting and frustration along the way. But it is worth it to me.

I get why you're frustrated, but I just haven't had that same experience. I can't tell you the last time that a game didn't launch for me...and when that rare event does happen, I can usually Google the issue and find a fix for it. No hate here and I wish you the best.

I decided to re-play Doom Eternal...I finished the game twice when it was first released but never played the DLC and never played it with RTX enabled...ray-traced reflections look amazing...not something most people will notice unless you go looking for it but it definitely adds to the visual fidelity...settings maxed out at 1440p with ray tracing enabled and I'm easily getting over 160 fps...id Software did an incredible job optimizing this game for Vulkan

sucks that cdpr didn't try a little harder in making the first person viewmodel more naturally animated.. being able to see yourself in the raytraced reflections would really be awesome. actually it's kinda funny, if you look close your *shadow* shows up in reflections in cp2077 but not your actual body :D

i like the doom eternal implementation a lot, other than the player character's model seems way too bright compared to the surrounding environment (such as your screenshot.)

I don't recall it being a jarring lighting mismatch but I also didn't play with an old school Doomguy skin.

I remember the default and Doom 2016 skins looking normal in reflections.

Those chrome skulls in the cultist base are AMAZING with RTX. Also the big spinning generator/reactor thing you have to climb into.

Excuse every aspect of these videos (phone shot of monitor, different refresh rate on monitor than phone, youtube compression artifacts, etc. etc. :D ) I took these just to show a friend the RTXness really quick while playing. These two spots stood out to me though:

I'm on the final level of the first DLC (Ancient Gods Part 1) and good lord this game is intense...the DLC ramps things up even more then the base game...literally every tough enemy buffed up, multiple Marauders, multiple Arch-viles etc...I heard they nerfed parts of the first DLC as it was too tough (they initially increased the difficulty and then backed down and nerfed it)...they doubled down on everything some people complained about when Eternal was first released- more platforming, higher difficulty etc

this game is a FPS masterpiece which requires skill and quick reflexes

It really is a masterpiece!

It took me a while to warm up to it, but I absolutely love it now.

I actually like Doom 3 and Doom 2016 better for pure atmosphere, just because they’re less arcade-y and more purely atmospheric. However, the play in Eternal has really taken over in the way that other technical games do with me (Hyper Light Drifter, and now things like Elden Ring, etc.) or Quake series for that matter. In fact, as other have said it’s like a blend of Doom and Quake.

Doom Eternal and Elden Ring are my top recent big-style games. Even over some others that I thought I’d like more.

I really need to play the DLCs. I just keep going back to my favorite missions though and replaying them all. :D

I finished up both of the Ancient Gods DLC...great ending...felt epic...that final level looked like something out of Matrix Revolutions meets Avengers Endgame...both DLC's offered a higher challenge than the base game but once you master the combat it's very satisfying...the final boss was a 5-stage fight...the only thing I didn't like about the DLC was certain new enemies required a very specific weapon or mod to kill

ray-traced reflections looked gorgeous...performance is also top notch as I was able to play with everything maxed out at 1440p with native ray-tracing (no DLSS)...anyone who played and enjoyed the base game should pick up the DLC

and one final set of ray-tracing screenshots...the screenshot doesn't do the reflection justice...that's the best reflection I've ever seen in a video game...the entire door handle and other reflective parts of the door are so realistically reflected...you really need to see it in-game to fully appreciate how impressive it looks

The patch today seems to have jacked up DLSS for me. Without DLSS I am getting just under 100 fps maxed with ray tracing but turning on DLSS to quality drops me to below 30 fps for some reason.

I tried restarting and again it did the same exact thing. I went back to the menu and enabled each DLSS level one at a time and then for some reason DLSS starting working correctly. Then to make things weird again my performance without DLSS this time was now 72 fps in the same exact spot where it was 97 fps without DLSS before.

Also other issues even before all of this was when I fired up the game for the first time today it said it was running 4k in the menu even though it clearly wasn't and it turned out it was at 1080p so I had to go to another res then go back to 4k for 4k actually to work properly. Last week I would have the game running at only 40 fps for some reason about every other time I started the game. It would show the gpu usage at 100% even though it was using only about 150 watts. This would require the entire pc to be restarted for the game to work correctly again. FFS this game has non stop issues for me ever since it was transferred over to Steam from the Bethesda launcher.

The skin is bright neon green as a homage to the original Doom/Doom2

The only one that looks glowing green is the old school Doomguy, this is intentional.

They really did it well and it runs well. But then again Doom 2016/Doom Eternal always ran extremely well on all sorts of hardware for what they are able to pull off.

Sounds like a regression because your issues describe what I was dealing with when the game first came out. Unfortunately I don't recall how I was able to fix it, unless I posted it further back in this thread.

I disabled DSR in the NVCP and it no long has any of the issues I was having.

We’re simplifying the id Software Steam Store Listings

A number of id’s offerings have been released or reiterated in ways that can make our digital storefronts a touch…confusing...Rather than write out the differences between Final DOOM, Ultimate DOOM and just DOOM, we’re consolidating our Steam library of titles!...Starting August 10, we will begin rolling out changes to our Steam Store listings for select id Software games...in short, we are consolidating each game under one major title and/or changing the title for a simpler shopping experience...

personally, I think more devs need to do this.
Agreed! I wish more developers looked after their classic ip’s better.

id games have been so immortalized and well taken care of. It is sort of painful sometimes to contrast other neglected, closed source, or unmodifiable games with them and imagine what could have been. Maybe one day we will have AI tech resurrecting great games and franchises for us that were lost in the sands of time.

As for Eternal: I enjoyed the base game and then the pt 1 DLC. I haven't played pt 2 yet though since I'd have to go back and relearn the game again, and it's been a while. Maybe one day if I get the itch I'll finish it up. I'm curious where they will take the next Doom game. A part of me wants to see a survival-horror shooter like Doom 3 again, even if it's just a spin-off game or something. The arena shooter formula seems to be working pretty well for Doom though.

I'm currently enjoying this on my Steam Deck, it runs great at ultra nightmare settings.

It's making me want another Quake though. Anyone else feel that way after playing it?

The first Doom (2016) didn't make me feel that way.

Yes, been wanting another Quake for many years. Have taken to playing Q2 expansion packs on my retro build. As for Doom Eternal. Pretty much gave up on this game because of all the platforming. Buying early, before major reviews set in, I feel the game was misrepresented somewhat and would love a refund. Still find myself playing Doom 2016 in arcade mode for FPS action. Definitely not going to purchase the next Doom installment until well after release.

I agree with so many others. Few other games are as technically sound and well put together as eternal. But the never ending platforming and ammo management is driving me bonkers. I bought this game so long ago and I keep trying to get back into it to finish it. Eventually give up and wait a while before trying again.

Yeah, I honestly hate the amount of ammo management you have to do, plus having to use the extra grenades and flamethrowers and shit. Feels too technical when all I want to do is shoot demons with whatever weapon I want.

I've tried to get into it and I've gotten a bit far into the game, but after playing it I just feel exhausted.

I made it through the campaign and I'm trying to get through the first expansion, but they took away the sword, took away the ability to breathe underwater, and added more jumping.
I'm going to just take a break and play another game. Probably Dead Space or something less... Jumpy.

Holy crap. I think I bought Eternal when it dropped. Finally grinded to the end. Jeez man. Technical marvel. Great story. But the game mechanics and the constant grinding, ammo and armor top up mechanisms are just too much.

it's not really 'grinding'...a constant supply of ammo/health/armor is available in every location and during every fight

Yeah, that ammo that is supplied is never enough. If you aren't doing the flame/armor, chainsaw/ammo thing you are screwed.

yes that was my point...you need to constantly use the flame belch/chainsaw/glory kills...it's not grinding, it's one of the core mechanics of the game...ammo, health and armor refills are literally available all the time because of the enemy spawns
