Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

Mine is now updated to June 24. That is nearly another 2 months after already waiting 2… wtf.
I'm not surprised. As soon as mine gets delayed I'm going to cancel. I don't care to tie up my money until June/July. It not like I can't live without.
 
I ordered mine on March 9th. I just got delayed. Again. Now it says June 25th. This is just a joke now right?
 
Have one on order for my parents supposed to ship last Friday. Needless to say at this point it didn't. New date is 20 June.

Until y'all's comments above I didn't have any idea it wouldn't ship. I had thought 2 months wait was quite a bit of time already. Oh well...

Im sure back in March they had all intention to ship as stated. Then the factories overseas closed down for a few weeks and are just starting to re-open and threw off the intended schedule. At least this is what happened to a few board games I am waiting on.
 
Damn, just got my delay notice too. The two month delay seems to indicate that at best they just now got the 2nd batch on to a boat. The fact that the original wait time given to me was also about two months indicates to me that they may just have no idea when they'll be receiving more stock and they're just pushing back ship dates two months at a time.

Yes, that's the feeling I get as well. I've worked with Dell for years at my job in IT, and I know when they push dates back like that, they're just guessing.

My ship date just changed to June 20 also. So much for that. I guess I don't care enough to wait indefinitely.

No, it's COVID supply lines. Have you not done any tech purchases in the last 2 years? Everything got all fucked up with COVID and it still isn't unsnarled. There's still all kinds of issues with shipping capacity, some chips are in short supply because a surge in demand means all the TSMC and Samsung fabs are completely booked, all 3 shifts, and now there's a new round of severe lockdowns in China. So shit gets delayed. If it is an item that has been in stock for a long time and isn't in super high demand, you don't notice as there's enough stock in the US and shipments come in soon enough that it generally doesn't run out. However if something is in high demand or is brand new, or both as is the case with this, then ya, delays can and do happen.

We've had vendors warn us of 6 month lead times on some things because of shortages/backups. It is just the world we live in at the moment.
 
I would consider the Samsung version of this if they release it. But other than that, what's the alternative? There's no OLED or QD-OLED gaming monitors on the horizon short of 42-48" LG things and while I understand why people like those, I'd really prefer something smaller like this one.

So yeah, I'm down to wait a few months.. or more.

Exactly. Everybody's in here whining and complaining lol But this is just the start, At least some people are getting them and it's better than we had a year ago which was 0. So hey, Given the times and everything I'm ok with it taking a little longer that we would like for it to reach all users. Some people have been waiting for nearly 2 years on rtx 3000 so..

I got lucky with the EVG 3080 FTW3, tried for 4 months to get one and then one day my brother calls me up and asks me if I want one. A friend of ours got a second one and didn't need it. Paid $1000 for it.
I also got lucky with the 3080Ti FE, was able to grab two on launch day after camping out overnight at Best Buy.

I am really enjoying this monitor, you all will probably enjoy it as well when you receive yours.
 
Ok, I don't know what the fuck is going on with the panel fan (? don't think it's the G-Sync fan) on my unit but it's really starting to get annoying.

I have HDR brightness set to just 20 and all I'm doing is browsing with Chrome and it's constantly kicking on at completely random intervals for seemingly no reason, and it's been constantly doing this all day for the last two days.

WTF.
 
After almost two months the only thing that really annoys me is when it shuts itself off after the pixel refresh cycle

I wish it would just stay in standby where I leave it

I replaced my LG CX 55" with the Samsung S95B. Very impressed so far. No issues running PC mode, 12-bit RGB Full @ 4k/120 with VRR. Colors are saturated out of the box but once it's dialed in the picture is amazing. Definitely makes for a better gaming monitor than the CX.

QD-OLED is the new sheriff in town. Once they are produced in smaller sizes, I think Samsung will sell these to PC gamers like hotcakes.

The fan will do whatever regardless of what you are doing or what settings are being used.

Panel manufacturers will try to slow innovation as long as possible. Remember, the point is not to sell a lot of units, its to make a lot of money. Small OLED panels can be made cheaply, but the big ones make more money, and manufacturing capacity being below consumer demand, there's no incentive to make less money. Being that panel manufacturers, not the monitor manufacturers, are the gatekeepers to what sizes we can buy.

Every new feature is a potential keystone to increase demand for a fleet of new panels, but that's a single-use tactic. You can't use that feature as a "new hotness" to pump up demand after the initial craze subsides.

So why would you dump a ton of new features into a new panel tech when it will really only sell one new fleet of products? Sure, it would sell like crazy, but then demand will slow down once people get a hold of the products. Once everyone has these panels, you have to RnD some new feature to sell your next product, and if you can't think of one or get one ready in time, you could be potentially stagnating demand.

So you introduce new features as slowly as possible to keep demand sustained. Always researching new features, sure, but only drip-feeding them slowly as they are one-time-use tactics.

This is why OLED variety seems to be progressing so slowly, and why a breakout product like the Alienware UW is selling like crazy, outstripping demand and in such short supply. How many people look at the 165Hz and QDOLED colour and brightness and then feel LESS inclined to buy the lowly 120Hz LG 42C2? I know I am. I was absolutely SET on buying the C2 but then this alienware screen shows me that spending a wad of cash on the C2 will get me a less-than-the-best-money-can-buy experience. Essentially, the Alienware devalues the LG screen.
 
I tried the S95B but wasn't impressed compared to this monitor. Whatever Samsung is doing with the colors and brightness, ruins it. At times the S95B looked great, but when I compared scenes with the AW it was super oversaturated especially in the reds. And yeah, I tried adjusting settings to fix it, it helped but still was too oversaturated to my eyes. You'd need pro calibration to fix it. And Samsung locks out 20pt adjustment in Filmmaker and Game mode making it difficult to even calibrate.

I realize not everyone minds the boosted colors/brightness though. I mean even I don't at times but I don't like that stuff forced on me. All I will say, if you value accuracy, this AW monitor is far better than the S95B. I was hoping it was similar to this monitor in TV form but it wasn't and I came away somewhat disappointed. Also, the Tizen OS is a complete slog, it's the slowest Smart TV OS I've ever used.

The strong points of the S95B was the better uniformity over LG OLED, no color tinting on a white screen, cleaner near blacks. It can also do 144 Hz in 21:9 mode.

Samsung could make the TV great just by releasing a firmware that lets you disable their 'enhancements' but who knows if they will. Sony will likely do a much better job with their QD-OLED TV. Hopefully, Samsung doesn't do the same with their monitor equivalent of this.

It has a "Game Motion Plus" setting, at 60Hz, but it doesn't work in PC mode. I didn't use BFI on the CX (too dim for me, I much prefer high refresh VRR) so I can't really compare the two.
Sadly OLEDs just aren't bright enough to make BFI very usable for most people. They either need much higher peak brightness, or to go to a scanning display like CRTs where only part of the display is illuminated (thus allowing higher brightness) though even that might shorten OLED life.

Not completely no. A few people on AVS have gotten the EOTF curve close to what it should be but it's still not fully accurate. With the lack of 20 point adjustment I doubt it's possible.

The TV has some weird bugs that reset settings as well, one of the users trying to calibrate reported they saw it using a different color gamut than what was selected in the menus. Which makes it even more of a pain to calibrate.

Scanning wouldn't make it any brighter, it has the same limitation BFI does. Also scanning can have motion artifacts because the entire frame isn't being updated at once.

The only advantage scanning would have is potential for reduced input lag. Displaying each line as it's read in from the signal instead of reading the signal and then dispaying the entire picture. I'm not sure that's even possible with how DispayPort and HDMI signals work now.

I'm not sure if it is burn-in related. The reasons I know that it does it are:

1) Power usage. At this point. OLEDs are not as efficient as backlit LCD panels at a given full-screen brightness level so they have to limit the total power draw. LCDs do the same kind of thing, though at higher levels, again because there's just only so much power a TV is spec'd to draw.

2) Heat. Along those lines, the higher the power, the more the heat given off and that needs to be dissipated to not kill the OLED. Since people want their TVs cheap, thin, and light that means they can't put big ole' heat sinks and fans in them so there needs to be limiting to keep the heat down lest you kill the panel. The more that is on, the lower the heat per pixel can be.

3) Related to the last one is temporary image retention. That is in part caused by the inability to blow off excess heat. New LG OLEDs that have a heat spreader exhibit much less temporary image retention.

So I'm not sure if they could scan as I propose and not burn out the OLED, but it would solve the power and heat issues. Thing is you'd need some seriously fast processing electronics since it would need to process a ton per frame to do it. Not impossible, of course, but it would raise the cost.

No, you can have stutter-y motion instead of blurry motion. The individual frames themselves are clearer, but there aren't enough of them so the motion will still not be smooth. For truly smooth motion, you need more FPS. We should want that we get better GPUs that can push higher FPS, that we start rendering games at higher frame rates, even with good graphics.

It's similar to audio sampling, which also suffers from sample and hold: If I make a DAC that properly filters the output so there's no stair steps from the reconstruction it sounds better than one with no filter that aliases... but it still doesn't replace having a higher sample rate. You can build an 8kHz DAC with a perfect reconstruction filter that makes beautiful sine waves and it'll still sound like shit compared to a 48kHz DAC.
