i got another PS5 from walmart yesterday, yay! i'm hyped to play GT7. but yeah, the limited campaign is really, really disappointing given this was supposedly going to be the return of a grand single player experience.

the other thing that's completely unacceptable is that all the 'races' in the game are not really races at all, they're more like timed events where you have pass a bunch of slower cars and pass the leader in the limited amount of time/laps you're given. that's not racing at all... i'm sure it can be fun sometimes, if your car is juuuuuust fast enough to be able to pass the leader at the last second, but from what i've read you can usually tune your car to make the event a complete breeze and turn it into a short hotlapping session.

ffs, this is the basic "racing" structure of racing games i played in arcades as a kid in the 90s... what about actual racing, ya know, with practice, qualifying, fuel and tire usage, pit stops, close battles with evenly matched AI?? all those things are available in multiplayer (except the AI), would it be that hard to create some single player races and series following that same structure? Mr. Kaz, can we please move on beyond gran turismo's (1997) gameplay?

the cost of cars and mtx are the least of my concerns in this game, lol
The catchup events has been the way the series has done things for so long that I don't remember if standing starts were even a thing after GT2. I think the problem is inherently with the AI, and Polyphony have really done nothing to update it in 20 years. This is evident when you do a custom race with standing starts against the AI. They cannot handle being bunched up together going into the first corner. As a result, we still have the catchup structure to compensate.

I think I'll wait until they decide to re-enable selling of cars. I just hate the game in its current state, knowing how much better it could be with that tiny change. And if not, this will probably end up being my last playstation game. I'm so glad I was unable to buy a PS5, what a waste of money that'd have been.

oh it was my video card that was being delivered, not the ps5... here's my ps5 apparently :(

They nerfed all the rewards. Fisherman's Ranch is still probably the most efficient way to get credits, but the reward was cut by more than half.

I dunno, can you still blow through the Monza chicanes?

Oh no, I was hoping they would have increased some. That’s brutal.

To reduce rewards after having us live with a broken game for a week is a slap in the face. They are going to lose the player base soon.

They really dropped the ball with this game didn't they. Surprising since this was suppose to be one of Sony's major hitters.

Yes it is surprising. It appears that Polyphony is both greedy and incompetent these days. That’s not a good combination.

Game is back up now, they had to patch the patch to get things working.

Explanation from Kaz:

https://www.gran-turismo.com/fr/gt7/news/00_3802725.html

I wanted to explain what happened in this update.

Immediately before the release of the 1.07 update, we discovered an issue where the game would not start properly in some cases on product versions for the PS4 and PS5.

This was a rare issue that was not seen during tests on the development hardware or the QA sessions prior to the release, but in order to prioritize the safety of the save data of the users, we decided to interrupt the release of the 1.07 update, and to make a 1.08 correctional update.

This is the reason for the delay.
My sincere apologies for the late report to everyone.

Also in this update, some event rewards have been adjusted. I wanted to also explain the reasons for it and our plans going forward.

In GT7 I would like to have users enjoy lots of cars and races even without microtransactions.
At the same time the pricing of cars is an important element that conveys their value and rarity, so I do think it’s important for it to be linked with the real world prices.
I want to make GT7 a game in which you can enjoy a variety of cars lots of different ways, and if possible would like to try to avoid a situation where a player must mechanically keep replaying certain events over and over again.

We will in time let you know the update plans for additional content, additional race events and additional features that will constructively resolve this.
It pains me that I can’t explain the details regarding this at this moment, but we plan on continuing to revise GT7 so that as many players as possible can enjoy the game.
We would really appreciate it if everyone could watch over the growth of Gran Turismo 7 from a somewhat longer term point of view.

While having a 1.5 day long downtime is embarrassing, it is not the crux of the issues. I'm so apathetic about the game now I don't even look forward to getting back to it.

Yea I don't understand the need to release buggy games. First impressions are vital to a games success. Not to mention the slimy tactic puting in MT after reviews go out.

Having now played this game for quite a bit of time on ps5 i can't believe how much it sucks ass. The awful rolling start chase races and tacky café just feels insulting to actual car/races enthusiasts. There is very little new content over GT sport except now literally everything is all repackaged in a extremely tedious way so you can't even buy the car you want and can't afford any of them anyways because they want to sell microtransactions. Even the new UI is actually worse than gt sport in some ways and only tolerable because of the faster load times. Given the excruciatingly slow development year long delays and lack content I think GT is just a platform to fund Kaz's real life racing hobby and in no way his passion now days. Sony should have flushed PHD instead of Evolution Studios.

Half of the UI is literally just re-purposed from GT Sport. This is truly a lazy cash grab at it's worst. I've started playing GT Sport instead which ironically now has more single player content and imo better physics. The AI is dumber and the graphics is worse, but that is far outweighed by the fact that I can actually race cars I want to in it.

Hopefully they get the message about the state of the game and micro transactions. I don’t mind it if a game has them, but the fact that they are reducing rewards already is a bad sign. If they want people to play a variety of events then increase rewards on some of the others instead of reducing the few they pay out well.

I really disagree with the idea this is a good game ruined by microtransactions the actual campaign/café is awful and there is tons of stuff missing like for example Forza 7 murders this game when it just comes to the baseline races, having basic race types and setting custom race restriction options for both single player and multiplayer races. Sure every track now has dynamic lighting and weather but when you can't even setup a race that isn't either just track cars or completely random ass street cars who cares?

Graphics are a bit better over GT sport probably the best HDR implementation in a game I've played other than maybe battlefield 1 but certain details are missing like still not being able explore the car interiors and look at the engines is disappointing especially consider the lower car count. I think the physics are a upgrade but the problem I have is almost every car at stock feels almost uncontrollable before buying a LSD upgrade/tweaking.

Increasing the base reward for custom races would go a long way. But they also put a soft cap on those in addition to the low base reward so people don't AFK Route X. Guess what: People are still doing AFK races on Route X using a script through remote play. No matter what you do in a game, people will always find the method requiring the least amount of effort to acquire resources. They may as well give up and let the people who actually want to enjoy the game be rewarded for doing so and let the lazies do their thing. Artificially trying to force people to play the game in the way the developer envisioned is just going to hurt the former group while doing nothing to the latter.

there are some youtubers doing car showcases without paying for credits and they seem to be doing just fine buying most of the expensive cars without issue, although i'm sure it takes some grinding to do so.

i'm kind of torn on all this to be honest. on one hand, i totally get the hatred of bs designed to push people towards microtransactions. on the other hand, i also understand Kaz's statement about wanting to keep rare cars or parts rare. like i don't feel it's absolutely necessary that one should be able to acquire every car in the game, from Civics to Chirons in the space of a few days. i know people are used to "economies' like Forza Horizon's where you collect cars extremely fast. like so fast i go into my garage to change cars and spot 4 or 5 cars i forgot i'd won in wheelspins, lol. but i also feel maybe there is a *little* bit of gamer entitlement going on where people are getting outraged that they aren't being given cars (or credits) like that in GT.

I understand what Kaz is saying, too, but the rewards don't seem to follow any consistent rules. At least make it so the game respects the player's time. I don't mind it taking many hours to buy a car, but up to a month or more for a working stiff trying to buy a car that may no longer be available by the time you're able to afford it is insulting.

On another note, I'm sure a lot of people may have glazed over this fact at the beginning of the game, but you have a cap of 20 million earned credits. Meaning you can't horde your money if you want to wait for a particular car to show up and buy other things in the meantime. Premium currency, of course, has no cap. So you can spend $1,000 real dollars to be able to buy all 5 legendary cars now, but you can't earn money and have fun doing it to afford them all.

well i hope polyphony/sony/kaz are willing to listen and compromise or adapt... i saw it mentioned somewhere else but apparently the microtransaction purchase options were not enabled or visible in the game in the pre-release version that reviewers played, and were only enabled at launch - if that's true that is supremely scummy and would make it more than clear they understood what they were doing and didn't want widespread negative reaction to dampen sales. well, they got that reaction anyway so we'll see if they bend to it or not. typically they don't seem particularly amenable to changing at times like this.

i do believe that the plans for the game's future are quite extensive but we can't judge anything on 'what ifs.'

Yes they did turn MT on after the reviews and is one of the main reason it metacritic score has tanked. If they don't do a quick 180 there is no future for this game.

This kind of garbage should be illegal. It's bait and switch.

Absolutely, this is a seriously ill-conceived / flawed game further ruined by microtransactions.

I think the graphics is much better than GT Sport, especially on some tracks, but the physics while in some sense better, also flawed in many ways, including the driveability issue you mention. Without a Two-way LSD most cars handle like driving on ice instead of bone dry asphalt.

there are some youtubers doing car showcases without paying for credits and they seem to be doing just fine buying most of the expensive cars without issue, although i'm sure it takes some grinding to do so.
Some? Without grinding you can barely buy a handful of cars outside of the prize cars while playing through the game.
i'm kind of torn on all this to be honest. on one hand, i totally get the hatred of bs designed to push people towards microtransactions. on the other hand, i also understand Kaz's statement about wanting to keep rare cars or parts rare.
No, I don't get it. It is either a misguided or sinister idea. The exact reason we play these games is to drive unattainable / rare cars. Making them just as unattainable / rare in the game defeats the purpose of the game.
like i don't feel it's absolutely necessary that one should be able to acquire every car in the game, from Civics to Chirons in the space of a few days. i know people are used to "economies' like Forza Horizon's where you collect cars extremely fast. like so fast i go into my garage to change cars and spot 4 or 5 cars i forgot i'd won in wheelspins, lol. but i also feel maybe there is a *little* bit of gamer entitlement going on where people are getting outraged that they aren't being given cars (or credits) like that in GT.
That's the strawman argument I've seen every defender bring up. But nobody wants to acquire every car in the game, and certainly not in a few days. That was never a goal i any older Gran Turismo, if anything they are trying to force it on us as some grand end goal themselves. I barely had a fraction of the cars in my garage in each previous game. The problem is that I can't even afford to buy the few cars I want and I'm stuck with using prize cars that I don't like, and even forced to upgrade them to make them competitive. It really is adding insult to injury.

I understand what Kaz is saying, too, but the rewards don't seem to follow any consistent rules. At least make it so the game respects the player's time. I don't mind racing hours to achieve something, as long as I get unique and interesting races while doing so. But repeating 3 or 4 events ad nausea is not my idea of fun. They want low payouts for races, fine, then make more events, so I don't have to repeat any.
But at the end of the day the game's economy could be mostly fixed by the flip of a switch: Enabling selling of prize cars. There is no good reason for that restriction being in the game apart from forcing microtransactions and grind.

Enabling the selling of cars would go a long way, but the resale value needs to be reasonable. I recall when the auction house was first added to Forza Motorsport all the cars sold for only 100 credits to "encourage" the use it. If PD does let us sell cars eventually it would make perceptions of the game go even lower if they pulled this, so I doubt they would pull something that extreme. The question is what percent of value would PD settle on, and how badly will it depreciate with car mileage.

Unless they want to eat their own words of aiming towards realism, the deprecation based on mileage should also be realistic.

kinda crazy, i had to dig through the 'new releases' list in the playstation store (the console app) to see GT7. you would think it would still be featured on the front page still, given it's one of sony's biggest, most well-known franchises... wonder if they quietly shuffled it back a little given the current situation? i'm just guessing though, it might have been like this since day 1 for all i know. i was just really surprised that i had to 'dig' a little to see it.

my initial thoughts, focused mainly on the actual driving physics, controller tuning, graphics and sound (not getting into the mtx/rewards/selling cars/online only situation yet):

- i was skeptical about the game's physics being anything truly improved over GT Sport just based on gameplay i watched on youtube. it didn't look all that different except for the cockpit camera movement which i thought might have made it look more different/improved than it really was... well holy crap, it actually is a pretty big jump from Sport. this is definitely the most realistic GT yet. in fact i would argue (tentatively, since i'm still playing on controller vs. my many thousands of hours of sim racing experience on my PC w/ a full sim rig) this is probably the most realistic driving you can get outside of full sim racing titles like ACC or iRacing. certainly more realistic than FM7.

- controller felt pretty good, slightly better than Sport although i was disappointed in the haptic feedback in the triggers... even on the "weak" setting i feel like it's way too strong, especially on the brakes/left trigger. i turned them both off for maximum control. also, the cockpit camera wheel animation still has the weird slowness to it that Sport has, so when you're driving controlling oversteer for example, and you're making fast left-right movements on the stick, the steering wheel doesn't respond anywhere near fast enough so you can't use it as a sort of visual reference for your steering inputs like you can in say, FM7 or ACC. still, it feels really good overall. i made my way through all gold license tests up through the third 'super license' one and i gotta say, even though some of the harder ones took many many retries, every single attempt was really really fun. edit: forgot to add that while the trigger feedback wasn't greet, the "hd rumble" for general vibrations is very very good and it's pretty cool how communicative it can be about what the car is doing

- the graphics really do look superb... clearly the thought process in creating the visuals was realism, even if it might seem understated in certain time of day/weather conditions (such as pre-dawn or post-sunset). aliasing seems minimal on my C1 @ 4k which i was surprised to see. the HDR is extremely well done. the real-time cloud and atmospheric simulation is second to none... seriously, no racing game or sim i've played to date matches what Polyphony did with the clouds and atmospheric shading. some of the tracks use traditional photographic skyboxes if the time is set to static, and to be honest i had to do a double take more than once because i thought the dynamic sky i was looking at was, in fact, a photo skybox. the rain and wet surface effects are nice, but along with everything else, errs on the side of understated realism so it isn't as flashy as some other games. given that it's truly dynamic i'm more than happy with that aspect. i know trackside detail doesn't hold up under close examination, but i really don't care about that. it looks great when you're focusing on the driving and that's all that really matters. that being said, some of the cockpits are too low poly, about the same quality as some of the older Forza ones that they've been using for a very long time now (like the 2006 Audi RS4 in Horizon 5 for example) which i was honestly kind of shocked to see. i have to go back and double check but i think the "showcase" scenes in the UI use higher poly versions of the interior models.. i guess they're just too high poly to be used in actual gameplay :/ most of the cockpits look *fantastic* though.

- massive props to Poly for 1) positioning the camera in the cockpit where the driver's head should actually be - so fucking sick of games like Forza or the DiRT series placing it unrealistically high up like you're 7 feet tall. when you're driving a supercar like an Aventador or whatever, you really should have a view of the gauge cluster *through* the steering wheel, and the steering wheel should block a little bit of your view, because that's how it is in real life. and 2) the cockpit camera movement is so good. like they completely fucking nailed that, and it looks mesmerizingly "realistic" (in the sense that it translates all the car's movements in a visual way that helps you "feel" what it's doing, without the actual feel). best i've seen in any driving game, ever.

- sound is quite good, also better than i expected based on youtube videos, with my headphones on. like every car game out there, some cars sound better than others... the Diablo GT (it's in one of the license tests) stuck out to me, sounds REALLY good and satisfying and very, very close to the real thing. the AMG GT on the other hand is pretty lackluster... it doesn't sound *bad* per se, it's just not very satisfying the way a Merc V8 should be. the sound processing seems to have had a complete overhaul with echoes and various forms of occlusion. ACC still sounds better (especially in replays) but given GT's relatively massive roster of cars i think it compares well.

On a positive note the Sport races this week are all BOP based and similar to the ones offered by GT Sport. I still think they should have at least one tuned race and a few BOP but I will take what I can get.

A blog post detailing update plans. First, they will be giving players 1 million credits for the 2-day downtime experienced this month. For patches they say they will at least double the rewards of later world circuit races, but will also be rebalancing the reward algorithm to be more consistent with time and difficulty across events (my biggest complaint). Rewards will be increased across the board for multiplayer and circuit experience. Also, we will be able to sell cars at some point, but no exact timeframe given. A lot more in the post below.

https://blog.playstation.com/2022/03/25/gran-turismo-7-an-update-from-polyphony-digital/

To improve the player experience, we will be rolling out a considerable patch in the beginning of April. The number of events will be increased, and we will reestablish the reward system with greater balance throughout the game to benefit all players.

Updates which will come into effect beginning of April:
  • Increase rewards in the events in the latter half of the World Circuits by approximately 100% on average.
  • Addition of high rewards for clearing the Circuit Experience in all Gold/All Bronze results.
  • Increase of rewards in Online Races.
  • Include a total of eight new one-hour Endurance Race events to Missions. These will also have higher reward settings.
  • Increase the upper limit of non-paid credits in player wallets from 20M Cr. to 100M Cr.
  • Increase the quantity of Used and Legend cars on offer at any given time.
Beyond this there will be a few additional patches deployed between now and the end of April which will add new cars and course layouts and make some other fixes.

Finally, we also want to take the opportunity to lay out some of the near-term updates we are working on. We can’t confirm an exact date or specifics yet, but will give advance notice via www.gran-turismo.com.
  • Increase the payout value of limited time rewards as we develop as a live service.
  • Further World Circuit event additions.
  • Addition of Endurance Races to Missions including 24-hour races.
  • Addition of Online Time Trials and awarding of rewards according to the player’s difference with the top ranked time.
  • Make it so cars can be sold.
