Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

Just had a few questions for those that already have theirs.

Have you guys how the antiglare coating turns grey when under any ambient light at all? It honestly looks shocking in all the pictures I've seen so far, enough to put me off swapping my G9 Neo for one.

Anyone have a G9 Neo to compare to by any chance?

The AMOLEDs used in iPhones use PWM. None of the LG OLEDs use PWM or certainly none of the recent models such as C1/CX and G1/GX.
If it flickers it causes eyestrain in sensitive individuals. Whether it is technically "PWM" or not, is not really relevant.
It does not have to be a visible flicker to be problematic. Most of the time it's invisible.

I had to return a LG panel OLED TV since it would give me eyestrain/headache within 15 minutes of viewing. All of those TVs have the same flicker.
More about it in this thread.

On a side note, for me atleast, changing the following settings work very well for SDR use and now almost match my NEC EA274Wmi including whitepoint :

Mode: TrueBlack400 (all other settings are default)

Windows HD color : On, SDR/HDR Brightness ratio: 19

NV panel Red Channel brightness boosted to 52 % from default 50 eliminates the native greenish white point.

You should be able to tune the white point a bit with the custom color modes R/G/B white point controls. I have done so in HDR. Using 98/98/100 atm.

I had a G9 Neo...its dogshit in comparison.

No grey issues. Black is black. Epic display.

Got mine today and it's pretty great.

Text seems very slightly blurrier than my previous LG 34" 3440x1440, presumably due to the subpixel arrangement, but in every other way it is amazing. For gaming I very much doubt there is a better all around display.

I'm no PWM expert to be sure. I haven't even encountered anything PWM in like a decade. The last time I encountered it was a monitor I bought from Microcenter that I had to quickly return because it was painful for me.
I don't have any OLED stuff, but I do read online that people have had eyestrain with OLED and PWM. Do a websearch with those two terms and you'll get lots of results. People's iPhone 12's for instance with their OLED screens cause people eye pain. Is it the C1 and newer that have fixed that? I'm not clear? C2 should be good?
I have a suspicion this Alienware would cause me trouble based on those videos, because that banding movement recorded in the camera is the kind of stuff picked up on the JVC Laser projector I have now that makes my eyes feel like they are burning and after only 30 minutes or so of viewing my eyes hurt for days at this point. :(
This monitor gives me a bit of burning/discomfort in my eyes but I thought it was just because it is so bright. Like right now, I just got up and am sitting in front of it and my eyes slightly burning.
I used it for 20 hours straight earlier with no problems, so for me the discomfort is right away and then goes away.

As a current and lifelong CRT user, it is for me.

I'm not about to run out and buy a 3090 so I can run all my games at 120fps+. So I need a strobed display to keep motion clarity at lower refresh rates like 60hz,75hz,90hz.

Listen...I'm only gonna say this one time. This monitor is fucking incredible for gaming. I have had EVERY monitor from FW900s to the PG32UQX. Every oled from that failed 31" double strobe 60hz Dell to the curved C6 LG, to C7 LG, to C9 LG and now the C177 LG.

I've had the X34, the 38"UW, the G9 Neo..........Crimminy I've even had the catleap, mango & zisworks modified seiki!

Nothing touches this thing. Nothing. You think you know, but you have no idea.
Its motion clarity, sharp picture and out of this world HDR has blown my mind!

I just played Horizon Zero Dawn for the first time ever. This is a game I would never play...ever.... WHOLEEE FUGGGIN CHITTTTT it looks so damn good its mind melting! The motion clarity is almost CRT like...its right there man....almost better actually because you have the fast crispness.

I don't wanna hear any looser talk about BFI, lack of speakers, lack of DSC, lack of thunderbolt/USBC..... once you try this crazy ass thing, none of that shit will mater!

Cheezus...I can't believe i'm creamin my panties over a 1440peee display....but its that damn good!

PS

BF2042 Uninstalled, Angel does it again! Can somebody direct me to a good modern competitive FPS, with HDR, that is not cartoony or trash or EFT (because I already have a job)?

Don't be sad that's just how it is sometimes!

Honestly, the landscape is BLEAK right now. The only FPS games that aren't old as shit I can stomach at all are MW2019 MP and sometimes some Escape from Tarkov (though the latter doesn't have HDR). They're both a bit rough, and they're both radically different from each other, but they're the best newer ones I've found.

As a hardcore Battlefield fan though...I'm actually super sad that this is what I'm stuck with, and that I am actually looking forward to MW2 this year.

I just got mine. Just have to say, it's pretty similar to my 32EP950. I still give the edge to my 32EP950 in raw image quality.
Nice....yea...they should have DSC 4k240hz that 32EP950!

4k240 Oled will get my monies next. I think I'm gonna pass on the G8

Someone just got their panel, likely barely set it up yet and compared to a panel they've had for a while and honestly seems like a big compliment to me.

BF4, BF1, and BF5 still have decent sized player bases. And they still look great. Especially BF1.

While this is true, none of them are modern games, either from a weapon/setting standpoint (BFV/BF1), or from a release/technology/graphics or gameplay perspective with BF4 (plus that one doesn't support HDR).

He said he wanted something shooty, not only shooty in a modern setting. You think WW1 and WW2 settings won't look good on an OLED?

I'm just thinking about how BF1's night maps, and Passchendale, will look glorious on an OLED

The 32EP950 is a JOLED RGB OLED panel that costs $4000 and is targeted at professional color accuracy standards. The fact that they are comparable at all is a pretty big point in favor of the AW3423DW. Near-professional OLED image quality along with 175hz and gsync ultimate? For $1300? Um, yes, please.
Shit, I thought he was talking about that IPS panel from them, my bad.

That said, this should still blow that panel away in HDR content (not to mention longevity).

He specifically said modern, that said, I might have to give Passchendaele a try now that you mention it...

While I don’t doubt what you’re saying, he’s not wrong you know. Having BFI for lower refreshes would allow all games to look good. One of my favorite things to do when I got my “new” CRT monitors back in the day (F520, Artisan, FW-900) were to go back and play my favorite games on them. Not all games support cranking the refresh to 175hz. If they allowed a BFI mode that simply gave us that 5.7ms of image persistence at all refreshes then that would have been more than sufficient.

To me it feels like a “so close yet so far”. But yes - we should praise it for what it is too. This is a HUGE step in the right direction and should be praised as such.

Fellow Canadians, did any of you receive or have you order ship ?

Just received an email from Dell pushing back my delivery back to June. I ordered on March 9th.
Reading all the feedback so far makes me wish I had the monitor in my hands, but oh well.

Just got an email this morning. Delayed to April 28 now for shipment. Was suppose to ship March 10. Oh well...at least its not cancelled and I am in the queue.

No Canadians have got a shipment yet. As far as I've seen on Reddit and other forums, I have the earliest purchase date (March 4th).

^^^^This exactly, it really lives up to the hype and beyond. I'm excited that a monitor like this is more affordable to a wider audience. It means things are gonna really change because once more people get a taste of this LCD will finally DIE

BFI on anything lower than 120hz is madness. Also BFI dims screens too much. BFI has issues being paired properly with VRR, etc

Motion clarity is incredible on this display as is. It does not need BFI and all the issues that brings. I say this as a dude who goes by the pronouns Him/Motherfucker who has liked bfi since before it was even called bfi when we would hack the strobing feature from those cheap 3d vision $200 displays over ten years ago.

I received the same email this morning. I bought it at 2 am on the 9th not long after the link became available on Dell's Canadian web site.

Original ship date was March 10th, delivery March 15. It has been pushed back to May 31, June 3 respectively.

From past experience with Dell, they often under promise and over deliver so I wouldn't be surprise if we actually get it in less than a month. Although, considering how popular this one is, I'm not too hopeful. Ohh well, it should be worth the wait!

BF1 night maps are some of my favorite HDR. Passcgendale is incredible on this baby.

Also played the clearing house level on MW and was gobsmacked.

Horizon Zero HDR should be what they showcase this display with because you have that inky black cave level mixed with all the glowy eye candy.

CP77 also has eye popping HDR on this thing!

BFI with a self-emissive display isn’t the same as a backlit display by a long shot. And yeah, there are trade offs sure. All I’m saying is give us the option. It wouldn’t have killed them to include it. Don’t like it? Think it’s madness? Then be a badass motherfucker and turn that shit off. :)

Holy SHIT I SPILLED WATER ON MINE.......and IT MULTIPLIED LIKE A GREMLIN!

I'm not against additional features....but its good to go without it.
Hopefully down the road we see a 38" 1600pee version or 4k240 with DSC and BFI

All I know is I am way, way, way happier with this display than I expected. And at its price point, there really is nothing to complain about.

Dell Canada email it’s pushed to June 6th for me. I’m just gonna cancel and opt to wait for the G8QNB at this point since it’s much slimmer and no fan. Usually Costco has the Samsung monitors too which I’d rather deal with in the event of panel lottery or dead pixels over dell.

Dell AW and UltraSharp are the best for panel lottery, they once shipped me 5 U2312s before I got one I liked.
