Mass Effect Legendary Edition

The problem with Mass Effect as a TV show is that it would take an absurd amount of money to do justice to the material. The scale and scope of the trilogy would be an expensive undertaking to realize on the small screen. Obviously, a lot of the side quest stuff would get cut for time or pacing. The other issue comes down to narrative decisions. What worked well in a game may not translate to the screen very well. Finally, given the personal sense of ownership people have over their version of the character, the fan base may be overly critical. Even choosing a gender for Shepard alone would be problematic. Some 84% of Shepards were male initially. Then again, the FemShep crowd is among the most rabidly obsessed with the series.

It's easier to do something like this with the Witcher as Geralt fits a certain basic description regardless of what the player does with the character. The gender is set and you can't change it. Stories set in the Mass Effect universe could work, but they'd really have to steer clear of the game's main narrative, which has its own set of challenges.

Being in a post 2021 world, the Shepard will absolutely be a FemShep. That isn't bad because I like both my characters equally, but fact is more people think of Shepard as male.

The main problem with games is story is often told through environment, like reading or listening to subtle conversations as you pass by. I don't recall how much of this was in Mass Effect but I will say they were overall more straightforward. But this flow of narration is typically the thing that doesn't translate well. There are other aspects like combat and other gameplay sequences. This often helps pace story in a video game, but in the absence of gameplay the pacing might be off. Examples would be fighting through a tough section of gameplay which makes reaching a certain story sequence have so much more weight. Remove that and the scene will still have an impact but it won't be as strong and will feel more like a generic moment.

They could do something similar to the andromeda sequel but to a different place and then they have basically free reign story wise as long as the follow the IP.
They could flat out base it on Mass Effect Andromeda. Perhaps another series of arcs to another galaxy altogether? It would certainly be possible and give them free reign as you suggest. It wouldn't have to be like the games at all besides having alien races, weapons and armor that come from the series. That would be all they'd have to do.

Money and effects are probably not an issue considering the costs of some series, e.g. altered carbon. Creating a compelling story that lives up to the expectations people have for Shepard is a lot more difficult. Mass effect was much more combat focused than the witcher and translating that to TV might be really difficult. A large part of Mass Effect is the combat and your character build with the story taking kind of a backseat in the second and third games. If they make a TV show then I might check it out, but I don't have high expectations for it.

They could just as easy put the story before the Mass Effect time. Earth discovering the artifact on Mars, the Mass Relay, first contact etc. It would clear them of sticking to the game storylines, and they have a loose history and lore to draw on and adapt.

The Expanse is proof that you can do an incredibly good-looking space opera on a not extravagant budget. Come to think of it, that show has a lot of similarity with ME artistically and stylisically. But The Expanse is much more about characters and story with the combat used to push the plot forward, unlike ME.

Happy N7 Day 2021!

ME 2 & 3 in particular have a lot of combat and I think it's mostly just due to the games having gone into a more decidedly action-oriented direction, but the ME series on the whole still puts a lot of emphasis on the characters and how you interact with them.

Just my opinion here, but while I think The Expanse does indeed look great and is conceptually interesting, the characters are all really bad haha. I felt more invested with pretty much every main character in Mass Effect (except Ashley and sort of Kaidan) than any character on the Expanse after three seasons. .-.

Not really. There is decidedly more story and exposition in 2 & 3 than the first game.

I think it's just the direction, because there is definitely more action, too, and more focus on ironing out the combat. They are just bigger games...2 specifically was hella ambitious.

Thinking about it now, ME1 had a lot of combat too, but I think it just felt less intense, not sure why. Maybe it was the way the guns behaved, but it felt more like...Star Trek combat, or something.

After the first play through ME2 is really short on story. Most of the time you're doing side quests. Even if good side quests, the plot is shockingly slim.

I remember saying the same thing. Mass Effect 2's main story is about the team members instead of the overall story. I remember thinking that "this game is all about just collecting team members to fight a big fight at the end." That's pretty much true but doesn't make for a bad game and I loved the story.

It's not you, and probably not an accident. I really would like the Geth to come back in some form.

It was slower, with fewer numbers, further away and weaker AI than the later two games. Going from ME1 right into ME2 is really jarring, how different they feel.

I think it's meant to suggest the geth, but it's too organic, and at the same time, too geographic. I think it's suggesting something both older and bigger than the reapers.

Geth are difficult to use, they could be dead, they could have beaten back the Quarians, they could be helping the Quarians, and that's before the Ending choice.

Again, not really. The plot of the game centers around the fact that you only know as much as the Illusive Man is telling you, and you can learn more by building up trust between Miranda and Jacob. By the end of the game you know what the Collectors are and what their motives are. It does a much more effective job at building up the plot than the first game does. You really need to read the novels to get a better idea of the plot that leads up to the climax of the first game when you don't really need that with the second game unless you want to know the circumstance leading up to the opening. The story of ME2 was much more focused than ME1 was, which is part of why it's my favorite game in the series. ME1 was more sparse and fragmented, focusing more on a theme than a cohesive narrative.

All that is not to say the story or game of ME1 is bad in anyway, but I just think that too many people have rose-colored glasses on for the first game and largely despise the direction the series took as it gained a more unique identity starting with the second game.

The problem is the plot was fairly thin. Ominous guy is helping you. Fight these bad guys. Gather a bunch of people in largely detached and pointless missions, that are fun, but don't add much to advancing the plot. End game boss.

I disagree, I had no idea figuring out what was going on in my first play through. I never read the books. There was a lot more going on in the first game too. The story builds up and expands greatly. Much like the TV series The Expanse. Starts small in scale and blooms into something much larger. The problem with ME2 is it largely threw that scale out in favor of simplicity.

All that is not to say the story or game of ME1 is bad in anyway, but I just think that too many people have rose-colored glasses on for the first game and largely despise the direction the series took as it gained a more unique identity starting with the second game.

I also disagree. The general topics were dumbed down a bit. Any idea of balancing humanities place on the council died with the first game. With the build up in the first game you'd think the second would expand upon it. But is was largely dumped. Was were many of the other intricate story aspects. It focused more on being flashy, drugs, gang life and other more simplistic things.

A lot of the side quests were still good though. Tali's side quest, as well as the Korgan one, were useful in building world lore that would matter in the third game. The problem is the core plot was thin and made more palatable for the typical gamer.

So very worth it for the three people that have not played yet. :ROFLMAO:

But seriously, if you have not played the series, ME is great fun.

That's me! Gonna sign right up now!

EDIT: Got it! Glad I didn't buy it for $36 recently on a gmg sale. Thanks so much TaintedSquirrel.
Just be ready, the game starts very slowly, so you need to stick with it. I had 2 or 3 false starts before I finally was able to stick with it, and I have now played through all 4 Mass Effect games and love them (other than Andromeda, which I just like).

:) Thanks for the thoughts guys. I stopped reading this thread awhile back due to fear of spoilers.... Accidentally saw a me3 ending bit but it wasn't major.

I saw the thread reappear just now and decided to chance it, lo and behold w nice shiny sale awaited :D. I own the originals, just never played them. So, I was hoping to find a good deal eventually.

I'm starting a new game soon, and this is a top contender now :p.

if you've avoided me3 ending spoilers all the way until now.. well that's a feat that deserve some recognition on its own :D have fun, and just know that if you find the first game to be a little clunky, it gets vastly better in the other two games. stick with it.

NexusMods has a ton of Mass Effect mods that really expand/enhance the experience, especially for ME3. Expanded Galaxy, Spectre, Take Back Earth, and Omega are just a few of must haves.

Pro tip: ME2 still has the same bug as the OG.
Do the Dossier: The Justicar mission before doing the The lair of the Shadow Broker, which means dont mention shit about the Shadow Broker to Liara before doing the Justicar.
Ask me how I know. :D

The LE version of the first game largely addressed the complaints I had with the original. Gameplay wise I think it is up there with the other two now. The only thing I miss when playing it is power combos.

for anyone (like me) who's been waiting for a nice sale before picking up the Legendary Edition, it doesn't get much better than this...during this year's Amazon Prime Day (July 12- 13) you can pick up the game for free...other free games available during that time:

GRID Legends
Need for Speed Heat
Star Wars Jedi Knight – Jedi Academy
Star Wars Jedi Knight II – Jedi Outcast

Well if anyone already has it and gets a spare LE key I'd be happy to take it. Haven't got this one yet.
