WD 18TB Red Pro 7200 Rpm, $251 at Amazon

You deserve it.
LOL!! I've bought more stuff I didn't need thinking this than anything else. Catch me on a bad day and if it's a warm deal, I'm buying it, haha!

That being said, this is about as cheap as I've ever seen these drives and they're coming from the source so no chance that you're going to have issues--it is as good as it gets deal-wise for these exact drives. (y)

They just sold out. I hesitated yesterday when I first saw this, then changed my mind today. Too little too late :hungover:

My package was delayed due to weather.

Same here. Was supposed to get thursday.

Anyone get their drives yet?

It just arrived 30 min ago.

I am *not* inspired by the packing.:cautious:

This really irritates the fuck out of me. *BUT* it seems every retailer ships HDs this way, and so far, none have failed on me.

But I still hate it with a passion. It's stupid. A few pennies more and a few seconds more is all it would take to do twice as good.

Mine came in a similar size box but the hdd was in this really tight high quality air pouch so the drive didn't move around at all in the box.
I had to pop the pouch to get the drive out.

Forgot to mention (sorry!) that Paypal has 12% cashback if you order from Western Digital, making this even slicker.

So are people getting their drives? Were all of them packaged improperly, like shown above? Did they actually arrive from Newegg?

I think he means the 16TB Gold Drives direct from WD.
Ohhh, I just ordered 6 18tb X18's from newegg last night, would prefer to get 6 of the wd's at 250 each. :) I just checked WD's site, listed for 549 for me.. missed it again? :(

you add 2 to cart and it takes off $500 and if you have paypal you can get 12% cash back apparently. Might have to activate the savings in Paypal unless it is automatic.
you can only buy 2 at once to get the discount, any other quantity deletes the discount.

looks like paypal is automatic,

To be fair (screw newegg) I've had some dodgy packing from amazon just like that.
I don't think anyone packs anything worth a crap anymore. Even companies like CDW and Provantage which are primarily b2b and have very important customers seem to just throw it in a box with one of those stupid air bag things that is flat by the time you get the box since it popped from the weight/force of the thing you bought. I hate those air bag things--worst excuse for packing material ever. You could use latex prophylactics and get better results.

Yep, heck half the time my Amazon purchases come in a simple plastic envelope with that being all that protects the retail package.

Yep, I see those all the time in our apartment 'package room', sometimes strewn all over the floor when the delivery people are lazy--I try not to step on them, but I know others won't care. It's hard to believe it is efficient to do it this way and deal with returns/credits.

Well my Golds got delivered. And WD does not mess around with packaging. 😅

If anyone gets one of those huge shipping boxes and doesn't need it, PM me as I could use it to safely store some drives. I have a UPS account and can send you a prepaid label for it. (y)

Just received 3 of those boxes and another arriving tomorrow, you can have all but one of them if you like.

Finally installed my Golds. And I tell you what... HDDs have quietly advanced further than I knew.

Left side is the 2x 4TB Seagate RAID-0 I'm coming from. Current model drives, only a couple of years old. Right is the 2x 16TBs Golds in 0.

I'm seriously impressed by the performance improvement.

Was curious on how this compares to my old 300GB Raptors in RAID 0.

Lol... they did not sound happy at all during the test either.

I have 6 of the golds in my pool with 3 mirrored vdevs, I am getting 500-600 MB/s reads and writes over the network.. very happy with the drives.

Not only has the size of drives dramatically increased over the years, but the performance has also increased. It's not something we think about much today, but even the 'slow' 5400rpm drives of today can be faster than the 7200rpm ones of yesterday (or even the 10k ones). And when you're comparing enterprise drives to consumer ones, typically the enterprise ones are faster anyways. Hence why a WD Black is the top of their consumer line as it's basically a twin of the WD Gold.

I get those 9 out of 10 times I order from WD. The 10th time is packaged by monkeys. I had to send all five of the 8TB drives I bought from WD during Black Friday since they were just loose in peanuts. They didn't even use the air packs some retailers ship on the drives. The first drive wouldn't even initialize. The second would drop out every time I tried to run any disk diagnostics and was so loud I could hear in the other room. I didn't even bother with the remaining 3.
