Total War Warhammer 3

So it' not just me I got kinda far with Warhammer Total War but I got stuck like a few hours in. They have that tutorial thing but it only helps so much. The Battles I have no problem with that is straight forward but when
I got that ship expansion for Total War Warhammer 2 the Ui was so confusing I had to refund the game as much as I like the Battles.

Sorry, but it strikes me as more of an expansion on 2 than warranting the price tag of a full game.
Creative Assembly is the EA of strategy games when it comes to monetization. They just get a pass from a lot of people because their games are actually good.

In a sense, when they combine all of the regions and factions from WH1 and WH2, this is a super duper expansion. They're also exploring races/factions that haven't even been fleshed out in the Warhammer tabletop game/s or literature before (e.g. Cathay and suspected Nippon).

Yes, I will continue my mod for WH3. :D

I played a lot of 2, and once you get hours in my game would start crawling. It could be my computer, I dunno, but that always put me off from actually finishing a campaign.

The menus and all that are a lot, but once it clicks, then its no big deal.

Quick gripe. Cathay and Nippon both had minis, blisters and boxed sets before in 2E era. They had army rules as well. And it's not like Games Workshop doesn't nuke races/factions (looking at you Chaos Dwarves) left and right. And it's not as if a bunch of stuff now isn't pretty much "white dwarf rules and history". Cathay and Nippon also figured heavily into the Skaven lore as Clan Eshin is actually based there, and that was a dominant and hyper popular faction. So these aren't really esoteric factions they didn't flesh out, put on the table, and keep around after. That really goes to Malice/Mala from Chaos which they legally can't touch now, and other even more minor things.

Next gripe, there's a reason for this. Ever since the shit fit over Age of Sigmar it's been known Fantasy is coming back. But it's going to be done by Forge World as sort of a retro throw back ala their Horus Heresy table top game. Which, if you have the cash is a vastly superior game to 40k so the assumption is the Old World game will be better than Age of Sigmar, and also sell models that are over 2000 USD per kit, and are pretty boss, though you can use some in 40k as well.

I have maybe 1200 hours in WH2 alone, don't think I've ever encountered a slowdown in the late game campaigns.
sitting at 4k myself, the late game slow down is offset by more races being alive at the begining. individual cpu turns take longer but there are far fewer empires than early game.

WH2 is one of my always gotos.

I just hope they balance and update all the races, some of the WH1 races in 2 lack the improvements of wh2 races. Beastmen are all but useless these days.

That might be what I'm remembering. Not necessarily computer slow down, but just a ton of wait time for enemy moves.

So, after posting in this thread awhile ago I delved back into this game and plunked an embarrassing amount of hours into it.

Do you guys play multiplayer or just Campaign? I've gone to Turn 100 with just about every faction now except Dark Elves. I love the art style and aesthetics of Dark Elves, but I just don't like the play style. I actually completed a Mortal Empires campaign and secured every single province with Tyrion. I wanted to like the Tomb Kings SO MUCH, but their campaign is so brutally slow. I feel like it would take me 400-500 turns to ever get close to conquering the entire map with them.

I'm working on an Ikit Scaven campaign right now. It took me a long time to figure Scaven out, but I really am liking them now that I think I'm getting the gist of it.

Is Warhammer 3 going to be similar, wherein all previous DLC etc is going to be wrapped into WH3?

Occasionally do a coop campaign. Not really into ranked battles online. Ikit Claw's campaign was one of the better campaigns I've played in WH2. Ikit himself is just so OP and he gets heckin NUKES!

I am currently on a TWH2 break, have been for about a year.

I have way, way, way to many hours into TWH. if you are looking to full map conquer every team takes a long time unless your playing on lower difficulties, Tyrion is probably one of the most OP lords in the game, and HE is the strongest faction overall so its probably the easiest to conquer the world with. I can't remember how long it takes to conquer on normal, but on legendary it'll take you 250+ turns to conquer the map. Its been a while since I map conquered, I usually play with some kind of goal in mind (like taking Ikit Claw and slaughtering all the dwarves, or migrating to Lustria and conquering it. Or playing the Everqueen and creating a Handmaiden doom stack) so my games usually last to around turn 100 before I move on. I find the most fun period of the game is turn 1-70 and it slowly becomes a slog after that, the auto resolve is very silly in how it determines army power as each unit has a separate auto resolve score that doesn't accurately compute to their actual performance in a battle. That makes it critical to play a lot of battles and eventually you (or rather I) just get burnt out on playing my armies and want to start a new game with a different race.

Tomb Kings play different, are super OP mid-late game, but start very weak. While they don't spend money to recruit units, spending their money is actually more critical than any other race as it is needed to upgrade buildings and unlock units. Once they are rolling though you are unstoppable. High Queen Khalida is probably the easiest start (though she only has a minor settlement at the beginning) because of her passive army gains poison attacks, I personally prefer playing Settra but the Brettionian's to his left can wreck you early game if your not careful.

In fact it is because each faction is so different in both global and army play style that I keep coming back. I hate Norsca, Chaos and most of all beastmen, their armies are ultimately bland and require spamming certain units to be effective, beastmen have all but been forgotten since their release with TWH1 and suffer massively from power creep of other races. Chaos is a pain because everyone charges you and will eventually whittle you down, so you get mostly stuck playing Dragon Ogre doomstacks, its similar with Norsca except with mammoth doomstacks.

Dwarves are in a bit of a rough spot as well, they've been mostly ignored in the sequel and suffer from some of that power creep but as a base unit and faction their stronger than many in TW1 so they can hold up. Scaven just wreck them though as they get to ambush when attacked and dwarven armies are terrible at handling ambushes due to low speed and a heavy reliance on ranged units to kill while melee units pin.

Scaven are a ball to play, so many doomstack options!

Lizardmen are also quite fun, their life Slanns make them some of the best magic based armies in the game (heal thy dinos to win) and give them a great deal of logistical freedom as you can top units up at the end of a battle resulting in more campaigning and less recruiting time. Cold One Calvary sucks.

Empire is basic but fun, their rocket batteries always make me laugh.

Highelves, OP as all hell, but a ball to play. Lions of Charce are garbage, but that's about all they have for garbage units.

Darkelves, OP but limited in what units are effective and have a lot more dead weight units than Highelves.

Vampires, cheesy fun, an all skeleton stack with the right mix of heroes and lord will wreck anything as they have the most powerful offensive magic in the game. Cold One Calvary sucks.

Bretonnia is my favorite human team, very few lords wreck other lords faces like Louen Leoncoeur, but their cav requires a lot of micro management (as does all cav in this game). They have some cheesy tactics too.

Wood Elves... I am ashamed to say that in over 8000 hours I have never played the wood elves, they just don't interest me, but the last DLC drop did make me interested in them so maybe when I boot it up again.

I have never played multiplayer, not against it, but not overly interested outside of a few scenarios (like playing Karaz-a-Karak and teaming up with Karak Kadrin or Clan Angrund). No interested in competitive games.

Vampire Coast is a lot of fun to play, heavy on the ranged, light on the melee (reverse of Vampire Counts).

and lastly Orcs, my second favorite race from TWH1 and they felt so terrible outside of Wurrzag until they buffed em and launched Grom (the last DLC I played) and they are back baby!

I've given up trying to understand that nation and its citizens.

They are incredibly nationalistic and proud of their past and they get hyper pissed at how they are portrayed by western nations none of which have a fraction of the history and culture to even compare to them (they aren't wrong about the history and culture either, China is fucking old). Now, not all of them are like that. But Chinese conservatives and nationalists are. So anything that doesn't line up with their image of themselves gets swarmed by a mob of them. It's the same dumb shit as "China number one" in PUBG or other online smack talk. Keep in mind that they were one of the first civilizations and came up with the theory that they were the cultural and economic center of the world and weren't wrong at the time, they still think that.

Of course this doesn't describe all Chinese and they have different regions, languages, and some of them hate the government. Many don't give a shit. But those people aren't going shit post online. And if there is any country with enough people to shit post like crazy it's China.

Epic Online Services is required to play the game on Steam. There is also no crossplay between the Game Pass version and the Epic or Steam version.

That combined with Denuvo is just a complete shitshow of anti-consumer practices. I guess we will see what the WH3 Linux port looks like. The WH2 native Linux release dropped denuvo (at least I can’t find any trace of it).

Yours truly created and released a UI Performance "Patch" Mod for WH3 on the Steam Workshop: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2803513131

Found that the game attempts to access a ton of local directories for assets, but the folders it's calling don't even exist. This mod creates those folder structures (in a pack file) so the game stops hogging resources looking for UI assets in the wrong places. Significantly improves performance as a result:

What is the actual verdict on this?

I don't really have time to sift through the reviews to see what is a real one and what is nonsense.

Seems the most common complaint is the narrative mechanics introduced with the Chaos Realm / soul race, because the AI basically cheats and it doesn't really reward the player. Patch 1.1 balanced this a bit, but many still want a sandbox experience like in Mortal Empires. You can also grab the Toggle Chaos Realms mod to disable the narrative stuff outright and enjoy a sandbox experience.

If you haven't bought it by now, wait for a sale. If you care about the mortal/immortal empires big map, wait till its beta in late summer at the earliest. If you really want the new races and to try out the campaign, find a good sale price. Honestly, I regret picking it up just before launch for $48. But hey, at least I got the Ogre dlc included. Not that I see myself buying any dlc for this game for at least 1-2 years if ever. The co-op MP has promise I guess, though it doesn't seem too stable for more than 3-4 players.

What is your guy's opinion on Immortal Empires?

I've got a few hundred hours into Warhammer 2, and this go around it feels a lot harder. Could be I don't fully understand the new races though.

Immortal Empires has made WH3 my favorite Total War game ever. Combined with 8-player campaign multiplayer, there's nearly endless replayability.

I read that some think they screwed up the difficulty setting for normal vs legendary. I don't know myself as I don't have that much time in 2 or 3 now. It seems a bit harder but not too bad 30 turns in. The overmap sure is dog slow though. Jumps from 6-12fps then back up to 70 during the turn calculations.

Yeah the frame drop during turns is rough. I think they just need to balance out some of the faction areas.

Ikit Claw I was able to take over nearly the entire continent within 75 turns or so and only had to manually do two or three battles. Pumping out like 11k income with 5 full stack armies. Seems they need a nerf.

On the other hand, the Norska guy immediately gets war declared on him by the demon dude Be'al or whatever and get stomped by everyone around him within 5-10 turns. Could just be bad luck, but I restarted him 3 times and each time the same thing happened.

Preload is now available on all platforms. The download size is a hefty 120GB.

Quoting this because the Immortal Empires update actually reduced the file size of the game by 20GB due to an asset loading bug I found and patched in WARHAMMER III (note: mod does nothing now). Unfortunately, the issue still exists in WARHAMMER I and II, Three Kingdoms, Rome 2 and basically every warscape engine Total War game after Shogun 2.

Note that the developer's summary of the issue is mostly incorrect. They make it sound like mods caused the issue, but it's actually a problem that the base un-modded game has with loading its own un-modded assets. I think they may have been trying to save face, or an honest mistake... who knows.
