He also didn't say "and all the characters must be white." C'mon, the hobbits that represent the English are all short with big, hairy feet... Tolkien was not obsessed with technical accuracy. Besides, shouldn't the humans have a diversity of skin colors if they're going to represent the entire species?

I have to admit I'm getting a bit amused at how some here just can't let it go and wait to see how the series turns out, that skin color is more important to them than, y'know, whether or not the storytelling holds up. Like they've inadvertently opened a window into an ugly part of their psyche while pretending there's nothing wrong. "I'm not racist, but I'm neurotically obsessed with ensuring a favorite franchise is whites-only."

Middle Earth was technically racially diverse. Haradrim were dark skinned. If that means middle eastern like in the movies or flat out black, we do not know. Thing is, they live on the other side of Mordor far east so it is not like there is much migration going on, just like there was not much migration from Africa to middle europe IRL. Maybe in bigger trade ports you could occasionally see people of other color, at most. But when it comes to Middle Earth I doubt even that is possible because Haradrim were very much on the side of Sauron and have been so for very long time

I am very anal about accuracy (as much as possible and makes sense when switching story telling mediums) and respect to the source material. If nothing else, just making bloody sense. Like hobbits who live in very small area to the point of risking inbreeding. If there ever was dark minority hobbits their skin color would have been eventually diluted by the bigger majority as they mix up.

When the serie goes diverse for the sake of being diverse when it does not make even sense and being very loud about it, it tells me that being accurate and faithful to the source material is not one of their priorities. That said, maybe they will pull out a rabbit out their hat and succeed in making a great serie but as it is now my expectations are very low.

If you are not into going this deep into the details then that is fine, but I AM A BLOODY NERD DAMN IT!!! I love details and when something sticks out like a sore thumb I get anxious! :D

*Edit* I messed up. Haradrim is deep south/south east. It is reachable from Gondor. That said, they are still on the side of Sauron.

They're engaging in cultural appropriation.
Appropriation would be when they declare that they made LOTR. This is just destruction. Not that it makes it better, but I like to call things what they are unlike them.

I don't think overly labored diversity necessarily spells doom for a series. It can reflect priorities elsewhere, but I'd rather not presume so unless there's supporting evidence. Besides, I'd rather harp on issues that actually influence the enjoyment of a show, like acting, pacing and plot. The most arbitrary cast choices in the world won't matter if the story is engaging.

Me, I'm anxious about this simply because Amazon's treatment of Wheel of Time had significant plotting flaws (deviating too far from the books, trying to spice up a story that really didn't need it). I couldn't care less about skin complexions, especially not when a series is covering a relatively untapped aspect of a fictional universe.

Incel outrage is the easiest, sleaziest free marketing any company could ever ask for, impotent outrage keeps the internet talking for no investment. It's free real estate.

Take heart, angry men of the internet! It looks like the goal is to make some Game of Thrones shit in the Tolkien universe. I can't imagine that's going to be much like the novels, which are super simplistic good v bad affairs.

Of course, I think The Lord of The Rings books are kind of shit. I may have a lot less invested in all this glorious drama. I'm enjoying this show though, it's probably way better than the actual show will be.
This won't come close to the first few seasons of GOT; It's been specifically stated this is targeting a PG, PG-13 at most audience. It's all about the $.

A fair point.

So you would have no problem if they had space ships and mecha?

A dwarf princess would be cave-dwelling red-eye/red-hair nearly clear white. Just throwing that out there. Even if they were somehow capable of having darker pigmentation - They wouldn't because they'd almost never see sunlight in their entire life. This is my problem with this stuff. It doesn't even fit within the world-building of the source material. I actually would have no problem with casting the role of a dwarf princess with someone with albinism of African descent. But they aren't doing that. Never mind the fact that the image released has a female dwarf without a fucking beard.

This is why this thing has so many issues. There are just so many numerous problems where the source material is just completely thrown out the window. Why even make this LOTR? Why not just make a fantasy show similar to LOTR but just make something new if you're not going to consider stuff like this? You don't need to answer, because we all know the answer is just $.

incels are the shitgift that keeps on shitgiving.
I agree, "woke" movies win awards by the dozens but shows like Yellowstone receive only minor accolades yet see far more success. The sad truth is white culture is being canceled, it's been judged (falsly) to be racist. White culture must be remade with people of color, homosexuals and "strong" women who supplant the alpha male. However every other culture can remain in tact and celebrated.
this is so deliciously cringe, i could feast on it for days.

lol i'd rather immolate myself than watch this, those three movies almost murdered me, i only watched until the end because i was sure fucking frodo would die, it was the silver lining for me, imagine my surprise, ugh

...maybe she shaved?

...maybe she shaved?
That still doesn't fit within the lore, and if that was the look they were going for - They didn't do a good job with the make-up on that actress. You can tell when people have thick facial hair and shave.

I know I know, I was just being an ass. 😁

Those are features that actually affect the story. I'm talking about the ethnicity of the cast, which is the obsession some have here.

It effects the story as much as having anything else that is lore breaking. The most important character in Tolkein is the world itself and that world was meticulously crafted, and introducing things that would not exist in it breaks the character.

Yep, Harad to the south of Mordor, quite a big area. Umbar also down that way. Khand south-east of Mordor/Nurn area. Rhun to the north-east of Mordor, east of Rhovanion.

This is the kind of thing I’m referring to. If you’re going to change something, do it logically. Next they’re going to remake the movie “Powder” with a black lead, cuz reasons.

Nerd! :p

Indeed. I don't know why I initially remembered Harad to be east of Mordor.

The hobbit CGI was pretty ridiculous at times.. well most of the time and one of the reasons why it's not considered a masterpiece like the LOTR trilogy. That and the goofy humor.
This and since they switched directors, Peter Jackson did not get the time to spend with it like he did with LOTR. It's clear that crap like this was the result.

That's one of my big issues with just what I can see in the trailer for the show. The CGI use is way over the top, and it honestly doesn't even look that good. This reeks of the Hobbit films.

When it was explicitly tied to Polynesian culture. Please, do read earlier in a thread...

How do you know that would even have been unfaithful? That you'd consider even a hint of non-whiteness in a fictional fantasy world to be "unfaithful" says more about you than it does about Jackson.

Please drop the straw man arguments. You know damn well those stories depend on real-world cultures in a way LOTR doesn't.
Tell me you know nothing about LOTR without telling me you know nothing about LOTR.

racists (both the consciously and subconsciously racist types) love this shit because it lets them argue until the end of time about "staying true to the lore" instead of "keep those fucking black people out of things i like!" it's like an extra layer of bullshit to obscure reality without them having to lift a finger. as an added bonus they can pull the "oh you're pulling the racism card again!!!" card.

lol ok... gonna call us all nazis next when that doesnt work?

how is this still in the news section?!
lol that didn't take long. so if it's only about "protecting the lore" than why does nobody here give a fuck about all the various little changes done to the first trilogy? [professor frink voice] "*pushes glasses on nose* well actually, you see, those changes were acceptable given the obvious respect paid to the NATURE of the lore with regard to tolkien's vision for his narrative works"

also your linking of "even BLACK people are saying it!" is hilariously on point. go ahead and link me a candace owens video about something next

if someone does or says racist things, i call them racist, yes. i know it's very easy and calming to hide behind the "they just call everything they don't like racist!" belief because it allows racists to fit ANY kind of backlash or criticism of their racism behind a wall of bullshit.

Yeah I honestly thought it would be really cool if that lore got expanded. The south and the east a very unknown place aside from the fact they war with Gondor and side with Sauron.

Combined with the myth the blue wizards went east, could have been cool to explore.

yup. i was looking at various maps and there is a ton of unknown shit to the east that could have been "explored", plus, whats happening in other areas of world?

I don't mean in terms of the sex and graphic violence, I mean in terms of being a serialized, long running money printer. I still think it will stink and that at some point people will realize that being a big part of the genesis of high fantasy doesn't mean LotR was actually good.

It wasn't very good at all. At least not as far as I'm concerned.

I might be a Philistine though.

It's really funny when the hateful, racist people are calling other people racist. The words racist and racism have lost all meaning because they are used to describe anyone that doesn't agree with a person's views. It's exhausting, childish, and ridiculous. Nazi has also lost all meaning, and it's incredibly insulting to the entire Jewish people when the word Nazi is thrown around so casually, because it waters down the incredible atrocity and the utter black mark on humanity of what Nazis actually were. I'm starting to equate people that use racist and Nazi to describe anyone they don't agree with to mental retardation.

I think it could be, but agree not when you’re limiting yourself to the same old LOTR schlock that they’ve always done. They need good writers to write new stories that take place in a different land mass of LOTR.

hey, we're on a roll here! let's keep the "they just call anything they don't like racist!" train a-rollin', baby!
