Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

Brandon Sanderson Complains About From Software’s Choice of George R. R. Martin for Elden Ring

In a recent Q&A posted on his YouTube channel, Brandon Sanderson (whose most renowned works include Wheel of Time 12-14, Mistborn, and The Stormlight Archive) pointed out that George R. R. Martin isn't really a gamer, whereas he played all From Software titles since the relatively obscure King's Field game (released on PlayStation 2 and now considered the progenitor of the Souls titles)...

Ha! George is really good at worldbuilding. Places, peoples, etc. For a project like this, where he doesn't have to do any other bits: He was a good choice.

Also, It's wrong thinking that only gamers should write games.

I agree with all of this. That said, I would love to see Sanderson work on a game like this. He’s also excellent at world building.

Sanderson probably would've been better. He's organized and knows how to produce without getting stuck forever. He knows how to overcome dead ends/pitfalls that complicated plots can trap authors in. RPG games are about systems, and he probably could've woven mechanics into themes carried by the story.

Elden Ring will use Easy Anti-Cheat on PC to combat online hackers, according to the games EULA...the news follows a recent Dark Souls 3 PvP security exploit that prompted Bandai Namco to temporarily disable multiplayer servers across the entire Souls trilogy...developed by Epic Games, Easy Anti-Cheat is included with many PC games, including Fortnite and Apex Legends...Elden Ring will be the first Soulsborne game to use anti-cheat software of any kind...

Elden Ring uses same anti-cheat as Fortnite on PC

Thankfully I will only play this game in offline mode on my PS5. Don’t need any Tencent spyware on my machines.

Anyone know if EAC has any privacy concerns and does it just run when the game is active?

EAC is a kernel-level anticheat that runs as a service in the background when your PC boots. It seems to just idle until a game that uses it is running. EAC is supposedly aggressive in some applications, banning people for using things like RGB software. I run iCue and have never had an issue with it and EAC, personally.

Bandai Namco was Aware of Dark Souls Security Exploit for Years

One of the people behind the discovery of the vulnerability told VGC that they had made Bandai Namco aware of the issue over a month earlier...as is common of cybersecurity incidents of this caliber, neither the publisher nor developer FromSoft acted upon the warning until it was made public...in other words, when the exploit was already used for malicious purposes and it was too late to subtly fix the issue

another member of the Dark Souls community told VGC they made the games’ publisher aware of a second, yet to be made public RCE as far back as in 2020 and that it remains unfixed...the person who discovered the latest RCE alleges that there are serious issues with all of the Souls games’ shared network infrastructure and said they believe it’s “inevitable” that Elden Ring will feature many of the same exploits, which will “probably be ported without issues and used on release by malicious cheaters”...

Just saw this on Steam about this game:

Co-op: Co-op for up to four players is supported

I had no idea this was a CoOp game? So I can play the single player story line game with a friend together on our PC's? This is a huge deal for me, then I might actually get this game.

Never played any previous games from this company before. Not sure if it's a mix of gameplay likeDiablo mixed with an MMO style from World of Craft? Is it an action based third person RPG?

If its like the Dark Souls games....you probably won't be able to play the entire game co-op. Usually its only in certain areas or certain conditions have to be met, in order to summon someone for jolly cooperation or PVP.

Anyone preordered? :)

I prordered a few months ago got it for $50.

I gotta admit I'm excited about the game but am going in blind, hopefully it doesn't disappoint, I'm a huge fan of the Souls games. I didn't watch any footage after the Summer Game Show trailer because I want to discover as much of the game as I can on my own.

Whatever you do, don't purchase this game based on that co-op tag. In the Souls games, 'co-op' means something totally different to what it does in other games where you can usually have players from your friends list hop into your campaign and play for hours with you.

Souls games are nothing like that, while there is co-op - it is mostly RNG based (there are some ways of forcing it depending on the title) - and it's not always available. Tough to explain, but you should be able to pickup one of the earlier Souls games for cheap to see if you like it.

They are great games but not for everyone as they require a certain tolerance for learning from your mistakes. If you have a PS4 I'd recommend Bloodborne. On PS5, Demons' Souls. On PC, Dark Souls 1 or Dark Souls 3.

should be a caveat to bloodborne, if you have any frame rate sensitivity its a terrible game to play.

Thanks for the explanation. Yeah this sounds like lame CoOp, not the real deal, I won't buy based on playing with a friend, got it. But would be cool to allow a friend to join and play along side you together, that'd be fun.

This is one of the few games I've bothered to pre-order just because I want to support Fromsoft and their commitment to PC gaming. Plus, I've been really happy with their previous PC ports...at least after the pretty dismal effort of Dark Souls 1.

Here's the differences between standard and deluxe, looks like there are other (collector) versions as well, no difference in game play content it appears. The premium collectors addition could fetch thousands at some point by people who failed the marshmallow test or be NFT'd out.

I always hate when the fancy editions include 1-2 in-game things (which I DO want) and things like soundtracks, wallpapers, ebooks, etc. (which I DO NOT want) for the additional money. For me, unless a game offers some sort of in-game exclusive stuff, I have zero need for anything but the vanilla version. Well, at least short of an in-store version of a game that includes something physical. I haven't bought a physical game in like 8 years, though.

the Deluxe version seems pointless unless you really want the artbook/soundtrack...if it included a Season Pass then it would have been worth it...even the pre-order Gesture can be obtained later in the game

I'm hoping the ray-tracing patch will be available on Day 1 but I have a feeling it'll come later...just a reminder: Elden Ring will not support framerates higher than 60fps on PC

Tough to beat Ornstein and Smough. I remember the first time I got there and realized that I had to beat them both...and there was no trick or gimmick to it, either. Plus, both characters have a full/complex moveset and patterns, too. Beyond the challenge of it, it's just an epic fight all around.

Lame on both counts. Especially the frame lock. With modern game dev practices it is easy to support any arbitrary fps (yes I'm a game dev).

IIRC, Bloodborne had several different bits of code, which controlled the rate at which things in the engine would update. So many different key pieces....it would take a long time to comb through it and get the whole game updating at 60hz.

Dark Souls 3 was probably very similar. But they likely icrementally made 30hz and 60hz version of each code string, as they went through development and created each thing.

Since its been 5 years....I would like to think that they have somewhat updated their tools and process. such that a 120hz patch could be feasible. But who knows. Maybe its something they will test a bunch and add later.

I remember distinctly thinking to myself, that fight is a note to the player to straighten out their technique and probably learn how to perform some moves they had been under-utilizing.

And yes, no gimmick. It works well thematically. Orstein and Smough are the great protectors of the kingdom and also, dragon slayers. Makes sense that fighting them is no joke.

But also, in their defeat, you really show your power and ascension as the chosen Undead.
