Samsung Odyssey 1440p VA monitors 240hz curved

Well, this is disappointing:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/pjgoxb/what_are_your_current_opinions_on_the_samsung_g7/

"I had a g7 32 for 9 months or so and ended up selling it to grab an XB323U GX. The g7 was a good panel, but the colours always felt dull and the great contrast was negated by the bad back light bleed. So I just accepted IPS for its flaws and have been happier"

Clarification: i went through two Samsung LC27HG70 screens, and they all came with blotches/clouding, which i was told is common on "curved" VA screens, and had to send back each one in turn. I can only assume this is what the above comment is referring to (and not actually backlight bleed).

So the problem is still there, on a 700 euros screen. And i also learned the supposed "flat" version of this screen will be IPS.

There's just no escape. Every time i gaze at the monitor market the same problems keep popping up again and again.

The guy on Reddit possibly got a bad unit, it's far from unknown with Samsung.

I briefly owned a pair of 27HG70s and absolutely hated them. The uniformity problems were terrible, with weird graffiti-like patterns clearly visible over much of the screen. Viewing angles and contrast were fairly poor for a VA panel, too. I just boxed them back up and returned them.

But the G7 is a different matter. I flat out love the 27" G7, it's the best LCD monitor I've use by a mile. Colours are very good, not up to the level of a productivity type IPS panel, but really impressive for a fast-refresh VA. Contrast and viewing angles are far better than the 27HG70, right up where I'd expect a VA to be. The G7's uniformity is also not an issue at all - on my unit at least. There is a very faint darkening in the centre of the screen where the panel is more curved than at the sides. But it's faint enough you really have to go looking for it.

If the new 2021 G7 was just a 4K version of the 2020 model I'd be all over it. But a flat IPS panel has zero appeal to me.

One question. There's some comments i found on google that suggest the newer version of this panel is not as good as the older one? Is that actually the case?

I see there is a new firmware update that came out a couple days ago. Anyone try it yet and know what it does?

Is there actually a new panel revision of the G7? Or are you referring to the other Samsung G7 which is a flat 4k IPS panel. If the 1440p VA G7 actually got a new panel, when did they start shipping them with it? I just picked up a 32" to try out the 1000R curve since I'm interested in the upcoming Neo G8 which is also a 32" 1000R curved screen and I gotta say so far I am not digging it.

No i'm talking about a panel revision.

Amazon even has two gategories you can buy, 2020 version and 2021 version, which according to some comments i've seen are not actually entirely the same.

Really? I bought mine from Amazon and I did not see any choice of picking between 2020 and 2021.

I decided to order the 27" G7 from Amazon after returning several other models and fully expected to hate the curve, but I actually like it.

What I don't l like though are the obvious scanlines. It looks similar to interlacing, at least to me, and happens mostly on certain oranges and blues in content.

I've tried updating the firmware and changing every damn setting, but nothing eliminates them entirely. Turning off Adaptive Sync and dropping down to 120Hz does make them less noticeable, but they never go away completely. Apparently this is expected behavior for this panel according to Samsung, but it's unacceptable to me. A real shame because I really liked the rest of it.

Scan lines? Wow I never knew this was a thing on the Samsung G7's. For the 32" models also?

I have the 32" version of this monitor, never seen scanlines on mine. I run mine 1440P 240 htz no adapive sync.

Why wouldn't you run adaptive sync? What about screen tearing?

I know I couldn't. The screen tearing was horrendous!!!

I suppose if one were to sit far enough away, the scanlines may never be an issue. For me though I'm within arms length and it was just too much.

Just imagine every other line of pixels being about 20% darker. It's completely unacceptable from any monitor, especially one priced at $600, and Samsung claims it's because of limitations with the VA panel.

I just purchased this monitor.. having for a week I can confirm scanlines on some content.. changing the display scaling to 105 seems to help with this. I haven't noticed any issues playing games.. I love the monitor so far..

Reviews recommend you enable adaptive sync for best latency (oddly enough). That being said some people complain of flickering.. I read it has to do with games going under the gsync range of 80-240. They added a VRR option that fixes the flickering at the cost of stuttering. From my experience adaptive sync is very smooth.. I haven't notice any flickering (yet).. I tested the monitor with gsync off and the monitor was still very smooth.

It seems like there is definitely some luck involved as to whether you get a good panel or not. I've also seen reports of monitors developing scanlines later on, but who knows.

Sadly the scaling trick didn't work for me. I also tried changing to 144Hz and 120Hz, changing the black equalizer, brightness and contrast, color settings, and even changed DisplayPort cables.

I really liked it and would absolutely consider one in the future if Samsung can fix the many issues that plague these monitors.

Ive never used it as this monitor runs better without it and I prefer it that way.
What do you mean "runs better"? Can you explain? Also why does everyone else say they see screen tearing and scanlines? Usually, the majority isn't wrong.

Fair enough. But screen tearing isn't a panel lottery issue. If It's off then all the monitors should have the same screen tearing? right?

When you enable adaptive sync on this panel, it locks a bunch of settings to no longer be adjustable. It also affects both brightness and dark levels, in what i feel is a bad way. I have my panel set up the way I like it, plus I have a 6900XT so I dont need to really worry about getting low framerates. Anyway I have always run all my monitors uncapped going back to the 90's and prefer that.

I dont have any issues with scanlines or tearing on my panel, and a lot of those problems are compounded by using adaptive sync again. Plus there have been around 10 plus firmware upgrades for these panels since release and a lot of issues have been fixed or minimized with these. I am sure some people are still running launch or early firmware, leading to issues that they have been talking about. They are currently on 1014.1 right now that just came out recently, and most before 1009.3 came out last year had some issues. Likely a firmware upgrade would help a lot of the people having issues.

Does anyone have a specific / technical explanation for the scanlines being present on some monitors (beyond “limitations of VA tech”) or a link to an article/ video? I did not know about this and curious to learn more.

I read somewhere it's tied to the Black Equalizer setting in the panels.. Some reported lowering the setting fixed the scanline issue. This wasn't the case for me.. When I increased my display scaling the scanlines went away.
The flickering in the panels have to do with the adaptive sync range. Disabling adaptive sync fixes the issue. Samsung included a band aid in a later firmware update to fix this issue.. which can result in micro stutters when the option is enabled.

I returned my G7 32 and went with a C1 48 OLED.. amazing display.. unfortunately it was too big for my desk. I returned this for an ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM.. this was too small for me. I ended up going back with the G7 32. Still had the scanline issue.. despite it's glitches I found it one of the better gaming monitors on the market for the price.

Have you considered the 42" QN90B? I have the QN90A & I can't go back to anything else.
