3090 mining worth is at the moment?

I picked up an open box Asus 3090 Tuf for $2050.

Mining quickly gets the memory to 110 degrees celcius so I assume putting new pads in required if I want to continue mining.

I already have a 3070 non-Lhr so I am wondering if it is worth keeping the 3090. Mining seems like it might fall off a cliff this summer with etherium moving to proof of stake.

Definitely would go 2-3 3060 Ti versus a single 3090 if you're going to stick around.

I have very good success using 3 - 3090's. You can expect to earn about $6 USD per day using the card on Nicehash, perhaps 10% more mining ethereum. You should be able to overclock to 118 megahash, perhaps a bit more. Make certain to aim a 4" ventilation fan at the back side of the card; this will cure your over-temperature problems. It should not be necessary to replace the pads. The potential disruption coming when ethereum switches to proof of stake will affect all cards equally; however, only the 3090 can mine dagger-hashimoto without the 50% slowdown imposed by nVidia. This means you have more options open to you with the 3090 on a long term basis.
Not including electricity cost, at $6/day, it would take a year to break even on a $2,000 card. :dead:
:ROFLMAO:

Why do you think etherium will hit their June 30 date when they’ve missed every date they’ve set for the last five years for proof of stake?

Archaea, I don't have any secret insider knowledge; I'm just listening to what they - and many other industry observers - are saying. I haven't heard any credible reports that indicate it won't, or can't, happen. Ethereum seems to have all their ducks in a row. That's it.
I started mining in 2017. ETH has been just about to go proof of stake many times — always just around the corner, then delayed. Many many times I’ve read don’t buy new cards or equipment because you’ll lose your shirt when ETH goes PoS. If I or others had listened to this I would have quit mining many times over.
I don’t know if they’ll hit their date this time either, but I bet it’s more likely they don’t then do.
It still seems like consensus among the community is not mutual.

A year long pay off horizon is not a problem with a 3090 at this time. Let’s say it’s true and it does go PoS in June 2022. You still get half your card paid off in mined profits, and can easily sell a 3090 for $1K in 2022 to a interested gamer if you don’t wish to continue to mine something else. Meanwhile you are hoping the crypto you earn continues to head up in value over time too, turning that $1000 invested into much more. I see very little risk if buying a 3090 right now. I convert all my ETH mined to BTC as I’m more sure of BTC than ETH.

Those who say card payoffs in the six month timeframe are a thing of the past. Nah. Not so much. That depends on the price of Bitcoin, and also the speed of the hardware. If you hold BTC and it goes up in value that answer can never be defined in the now. For instance back in late 2017 and early 2018 when my 1070 cards were making $8 a day and my 1080TI cards were making $12 a day for a short while — and BTC was < $20K. Depending on time of sell those figures could be doubled or tripled if I held and sold that mined coin more recently. Same could happen now. BTC you are mining at $6 a day now could be worth $18 a day in 2022 or 2023 if BTC jumped from $40K to $120K.

Also the next gen Nvidia hardware will likely have improved hashrate thay get us back down closer to a six month payoff again for those who acquire the hardware earliest. All my ampere cards paid themselves off in more like 4 months. Now, yes it takes more like a year. That’s the way the hardware cycles work.

$6/day i think was before the big price drop. It's like $4.50/day now.

No shot. They're going to ship with LHR just like Ampere, maybe even worse and on other algo's. I agree with pretty much the rest of your post though.

this is where I am. 3060s of any kind with the TIs being the priority.

Plus once Eth goes POS, some other coin will then pick up the mining slack and get boosted. Everyone will flock there.

So, this 3090 has been way too much work dealing with undervolting and pointing fans at it. I Don’t feel like putting work into pads when I have never seen it hit over 100 for hash rate. Decent card for gaming but my 3070 is enough for me. My 3060 and other cards never gave me this much trouble with mining. Apparently the Asus Tuf 3090 is known to be a bit tricky to mine with.

In winter the electricity cost is offset by the savings in heating. Where I live the heating is electric only, so the mining electricity cost is practically free. You won't be gaming on it 24/7, mining is practically a no-brainer to offset the cost. Even if it were to fail it will be under warranty.

$3 a day right now based on my 3090. I also have electric heating so power bill isn't much different if mining vs not mining in winter.

Basically free electricity for you.

3090s are my go-to nowadays after the LHR cards came out if I can't find anything else. I rather have one 3090 vs 3x 3060 Ti LHR after doing some testing. You get better density and better efficiency also with the 3090. A little work on the backplate on the 3090 by adding more surface area helps maintain its hash-rate.

Still a big cost difference between a 3090 and 3 3060tis isnt it?

About the same for my costs, my 3060 Tis (LHR) I get around 600-750 and the 3090s I recently got are between $1770-$2200, the highest being the kingpin model which is expected. I only have a handful of LHR cards and plan to slowly get rid of them as I find more non-LHR cards or 3090s.

3090 used that price or new? yes, for 1800 bucks I would buy a 3090, but not 3k.

New, the EVGA queues for 3090/3080s are/were coming up very recently if you signed-up for the notifies, I got a hydrocopper for $17XX + tax. Otherwise you can try your luck at bestbuy for the FE or look into the FS/T forums here, I snagged a couple here for around 2k or less.

If you're looking to expand some but having a hard time finding cards, the RX 6600 when you get them for around $450 are pretty good and very efficient. Of course as Andrew_Carr DPI (. :D both have awesome crypto posts btw) mentioned in a great post recently, you really should just accumulate your coins and not worry about the "ROI" too much.

Yeah, I got an email the other day from evga for the 3090 queue, let it pass onto the next person after 20hrs as I already have one.

Im not worried about roi more the cost of 1 card vs 4 or 5 but i shoukd look at 3090s if i can find them under 2k, that does make it a good deal over others.

Ive been tempted to go the 6600 route but im not sold on them 100%, ive been set on 3060s long as i get them at 500 bucks or so. Especially evga ones so i can step up at an very reasonable cost to other cards.

The place where you live is cold or hot. I live in Southamerica and it´s hot in summer. That´s why I am asking that. Thanks

Also keep in mind these people claiming it's free heating is sorta true if you have cards in every room. Or if you're like most people it's just in 1 room and would not heat a whole house by any stretch.

My cards are all placed by my HVAC, so when it turns on, it can scoop up the heat in the room and pass it through the house. When I had varying amounts of cards between 40-60 cards running at a time in 2018/2019, it was enough to heat the 3,100 square foot house for the most part -- in fact during the highest card quantity, I actually opened a basement window during the winter on all but the coldest of days to keep the house cool enough to not be uncomfortably warm. I had the HVAC blower turn on (through the Nest) every hour for 15 minutes to spread the heat through the house. Barely needed to use any gas at all.

With just nine ampere cards running now (4, 3080, 2 3070, 3 3060ti) it's not even close to enough to heat the house this winter. It doesn't even heat my full basement enough that it's comfortable.

Yeah 40-60 cards is just not what most people have. I got a 7 card setup and it makes the garage a bit warmer.

Edit: you also must've cleaned up with that set up, congrats!

It was an all around win. I mined quit a bit of crypto, and I made about $9K on the used Nvidia pascal and AMD RX 580 hardware too when I resold it (because used GPU prices were crazy (and are crazy))

It was a big time sink for a quite a while. At the time the AMD cards required a lot of daily care and feeding maintenance on my 12 cards systems it seemed like. Overclock settings on the AMD cards kept failing between afterburner, AMD’s master software and windows updates and random cards kept dropping out. It was a headache, even though financially rewarding. I had to mess with something every few days it seems like to keep it running.
My current 9 ampere cards mine literally for months at a time on end without touching them at all! Everything has matured in the space. It’s absolutely worth mining right now because it’s so hands off!

Agreed, I had a few issues to work out and restart it every once in a while for windows updates but generally I just let it do its thing. I'm probably not selling any crypto for quite a while.

A single card roi will change a lot per month, we're back to a year with a 3090, even at it's best last year it was 10 months for roi, so it's not a huge difference. I resold a few cards since 3k launch. A pair of 3080ti is keeping my upstairs nice and toasty (500w worth of heating and making money at the same time and just the 2 cards is earning it's keep in paying all my utilities yearly (water + gas + electricity) and a single 3090 is covering the value of my property taxes per year. It's not like I am cashing out every week, rather when it's decent. If you look at short term, it's kinda dire, but when you've had a yearly view and kinda wait for the right moments, you can pull some decent value out of it.

Personally, I would take the $2k you'd put into a 3090 and just buy $2k worth of ETH while the price is down.

Buying puts on Tuesday for SQ when it gaps down to $80 at open and bounce back to $150+ in a couple weeks is just gonna make your puts expire worthless :D
