Shocked!

"MCV extrapolates that the formation of the new Manchester studio, which will bring the studio to over 1000 workers within five years, means that Star Citizen could be eyeballing a 2027 launch. Jones doesn’t exactly confirm that, but he does say that “by that time, [CIG] will be operating a very large MMORPG.”

I almost bought a ship+squadron 42 package a couple of years ago....almost.

Well you string them along long enough anything is possible lol, I login to see my ship every once in awhile to fly it around. So I guess Im the bigger sucker, I still want to see something.

What's the difference between Bernie Madoff and Chris Roberts ?
-Bernie stole money from people that matter. [rimshot]

Its easier to feel bad for Kevin Bacon being taken by Bernie, then gamers being taken by Roberts. Both schemes are clearly scams in hindsight... but should hindsight on SC not have been engaged years ago. I mean there where people calling BS before he even got going with SC. Roberts is the biggest scammer to ever mascaraed as a game developer. I still say his only ever goal with SC was to get Cloud imperium bought out by some sucker like Microsoft. However its almost like the industry is on to him. I'm sure though any day those Angel investors he wrote about when he first asked for donations are going to come through and fund the games development, right ? lol

This game is actually a ton of fun. My cousin gave me a kickstarter account recently (i thought it was a scam too lol) and playing it changed my mind. The ship buying thing is still shady though, but the persistent universe has potential to be incredible if they ever finish it.

Are they trying to upstage duke nukem forever here?
3drealms only had so much money in the pot after their late 90s success stories (and they had THREE big-budget projects bleeding them dry over the next decade - none of which ever made enough money to pay a profit on their development hell!)

Chris already upstaged 3D Realms when he invented the Ship Sale - suddenly, your followers became a religious cult, willing to pay any price necessary to keep the lights on! This is so much easier than bleeding folks dry by creating multi-part games (the 3d Reams way) BECAUSE YOU NEVER HAVE TO MAKE ANYTHING EVEN REMOTELY FUNCTIONAL IN THAT NEW SHIP

At least DNF didn't do a bait and switch.
"Oh you are getting a story driven space sim, a spiritual successor to Wing Commander" and after getting a few million dollars: "Oh we are actually doing an MMO" And then they kept lying about the originally promised game for years that it's only a few months from release.

Do they have something playable... yes amazingly. However just ask yourself when your logged in. Is this a 400 million dollar game. lol 50x the budget of Elite dangerous... or put another way the games development so far has cost more then every single Grand theft auto game ever made combined. Probably cost more then every final fantasy game ever made combined as well... or at best around the same. lol

Think about it... they have had 0.4 BILLION dollars given to them, GIVEN no interest no repayment nothing, they where gifted damn near half a billion dollars at this point. We could have crowdfunded 5% of the james web instead. We could have crowd funded 5 falcon heavy launches and filled them with action figures just to watch them float away in the path of the Chinese space station for giggles.

Taking 400 million and giving 10 million of it to some kids to make a game doesn't make it any less a scam. lol

This is my question. I didn't spend a ton of money on SC but enough to where i check on my "investment" at least 2x a year. Still seems like there is nothing of substance to do that really matters in the end. So basically run around, fly a bit, uninstall again.

Don't forget the promised big spending investors that where just waiting to see that a space genre game was viable anymore.

Is the current game worth 400 million? Not by a long shot. Could it ever be worth 400 million? I don't think so either but who knows. But it's still an enjoyable experience for those who want what it can give. Just don't spend thousands on little digital ships :)

I like paying hundreds of dollars for bad "tech demos" too.
Although with inflation, some people might make out like bandits when it releases.

The whole thing annoys me (clearly). Roberts has destroyed mass crowd funding for video games. He is a crook and always has been. He can't travel to Germany cause he would likely to this day still probably be arrested for defrauding the German government with his movie company. (his buddies all did prison time there... he ignored their summons to give testimony)

It bothers me that so many otherwise intelligent video game players can be taken in by him. (I have had friends who have pumped thousands of their money into that scam... smart people that should know better) Gamers have quickly forgotten the whole digital anvil BS. Microsoft where lead to believe Freelancer was months from release... paid a fortune for DA, and then realized everything they where told or shown by Roberts was 100% bull shit. Microsoft then spent 3 years making an actual freelancer game. That is the point where the industry stopped giving Roberts money for anything. He almost put Origin out of business every time he was given a project... and the classics he is hailed for from those days where really produced by Warren Spector (an actual rockstar game developer). As soon as he announced his crowd funding campaign for SC I knew instantly what the story was... Roberts scammed the Microsoft out of 20-30 million upfront. (and cost them many millions more actually making freelancer for real)
At that point you could say ok Roberts was just an inept moron... that was smart enough to make sure his name was attached to things like a less talented Sid Meier. However he followed up his fleecing of Microsoft by heading to the movie industry... where sure he did produce some movies. (B movies that all went way over budget... but then that was the nature of the German VIP movie fund scam) All his movie funding came from an illegal defraud the German government tax scheme... which landed 2 of his partners in prison. There where other German fund companies that didn't get in trouble... the company Roberts was involved with lied cheated and scammed some banks for loans. It wasn't that Roberts and his VIP fund friends where just getting German investment tax shelter money... they where taking that money and using it to secure 10x as much in bank loans, which they then repaid with even more German tax fun investments. It all came crashing down when the German government closed the loop holes. Most companies just stopped making movies that could loose everything and still make money... Roberts friends where royally screwed as they where Pyramid scamming the fund and a couple banks.

"“FreeLancer,” the highly anticipated space-combat simulation game, as well as a yet-to-be-announced title currently in development for the Xbox™ video game system, scheduled for release by Microsoft in fall 2001."
I mean ya it was Microsoft so perhaps players that did notice just laughed... but the industry people that pay the bills noticed and have not forgotten. (anyone who knew anyone of note in the game industry at large knew Roberts claim of having investors waiting to invest in SC was utter bull shit)

The crazies thing about SC is just imagine what would have happened if people had given 400 million to a real company making space games. Anyway... SC rant over. lol

SC is crazy -- I bought a small ship thingy right after the Kickstarter (about $40) I think. I don't think I got $40 of enjoyment out it yet. It's just unbelievable how little they accomplish with the money aside from lining pockets.

At this point you have to wonder is this even legal anymore lol

I think they had a smart lawyer write up the agreement you sign when you buy in that says you are donating money to the cause and are not guaranteed anything.

Wow, didn't know Roberts was that big of a crook. The people who are supporting SC should know all that. Then again, most of them are complete fanatics and probably wouldn't even believe it. I mean, 400 million and this is where they are, lol. Yet the fans keep on defending Roberts. Sunk cost fallacy I guess.

Yep the die hards will chalk it all up to people that dislike him ect. Its all on record, although Roberts seems to have shut a few people up over the years. There used to be a bunch of stories about him at Origin, and no one from those days has anything to say about Roberts anymore. Wing Commander was no doubt Roberts idea... but he was young, Origin paired him up with Warren Spector who co produced WC. Sure he wanted to make a space game... but all the choices stuff is Warren. (if you have played system shock, deus ex or hell even the epic mickey games you can see that was all him) Spector is also why the game shipped on time and mostly complete. (not counting the Hex edit on the Error message... wing commander says "thanks for playing" when you exit but its really an error msg they hex edited the text to thanks for playing instead of displaying a error code lol)

The Digital Anvil stuff you would think the hard core gamers would remember... but I guess most of them are either too young, or would just rather not remember. I remember being excited about Freelancer, and MS was quick to announce a release when they picked up Digital Anvil... and then all the press hit. The story is MS realized the game was years away not months like they had been sold... reports are from anywhere from 10-50% complete after they paid $30m for the company for no other reason then being able to launch Freelancer as a Xbox exclusive... the other game apparently wasn't anything more then a a few art pics and a couple paragraphs on paper. Freelancer didn't come out for 3 years after MS bought DA. (and this was a time when games rarely where in development for more then a year two at most)

The movie stuff is more murky I guess if you want to be a Roberts defender you could argue he had no idea his finance partners where swindling banks for loans against their movie funding. However Roberts went on multiple smoose the German investor get away events ect... and is on record on a few of the bank dealings. (don't quote me but I'm pretty sure some of the bank people that rolled and gave testimony said Roberts was involved... but it was a long while back I read that I may be misremembering) If he really didn't know what was going on he is at best a massive moron. He really did just ignore German requests for statements and testimony.

But anyway... He invented Wing Commander !!! So I guess he gets a pass on everything else. Oh he also got a contractually obligated producer credit on Freelancer. lol

Anyway if you have friends that are in for SC... and they are Roberts defenders. Just tell them to look up Spector and go and play some of his games. Much higher entertainment value, and also the person actually responsible for WC being a compelling game, and not just a shit space version of Damn busters. lol

Ive heard people refer to him as "Chris Robber" which was always good for a laugh. Now I can see why lol

Agree with those upset about buying in for Squadron 42 and not caring about Star Citizen. I regret giving them $45, but I'm glad it was only that much. I'm also sure that in 2027, we'll all be told it will all be ready in 2032 and on and on.

It was worth my $45 just to be a part of this train wreck. I have gotten more enjoyment out of all the SC threads and drama than I have out of most games I pay $45+ for lol.

You find your sugar daddy(daddies), you milk them dry for as long as you can.

I just think they should own up and call it "Star Vaporware". I'm sure by the time it's done in 9342, it'll just be some crappy RPG Maker game that looks like it was produced by a meth binging marmot. Also kickstarter...scratch that.....Fraudstarter has been dubious for some time.

Jokes aside, This will end like many have predicted, and is frankly predictible. CRI will run out of funds as the buyers move on and/or die out, they will scrape together what little they have actually done over a decade++ of development and sell it off to someone who will actually complete the game. It will be a shadow of what was promised, and largely dated by the time it releases.

To give Roberts a little credit... I think the scam he was really running was the drop the studio on a big player scam. I mean he ran it once before right.
I am sure he expected a EA or some other big player to come along and offer him some millions for the studio. Who would push a game out and contractually list him as producer... and if it sucked he would blame them, and if it was a classic he would take credit. Then repeat the scam in a few years. lol When that didn't happen and people kept giving him donations I guess he pivoted the scam.

My biggest thing about Star Citizen is that where the hell are all these people who love space sims so much to pledge this much money into this thing, and can want to play a game for YEARS and continue throwing money at it? Like I LOVE Destiny, but I wouldn't play Destiny for 10 years. Star Citizen has been in development since 2011 and it's now almost a decade later, and people are STILL throwing money at the same thing. Like even I was impressed by some of the gameplay videos I saw years ago, but none of that shit can be done yet still...

I think the biggest issue is that the people who are already playing Star Citizen are the ones who've WANTED to play Star Citizen. So you are relying on a persistent player-base to maintain funding for your project... like say you officially launch the game by 2027 then how are you going to entice new people into the universe?

I remember playing during a "free play" weekend a couple years ago, and I had NO IDEA what to do and the community and people in-game you know what they told me? "Go look it up." Like there wasn't even any direction the game itself could give me to tell me wtf I am supposed to do in this world. Once I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and read the articles I was told to read to "get started" I went back into the game and just ran into glitch after glitch of this enormous ship spinning all over the place when landing... piloting a ship was utterly unintuitive...

I mean No Man's Sky for all the controversy around their launch has made a 100x more interesting universe in half the amount of time as Star Citizen, and with FREE essentially expansions year after year. No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous are way more fun and stable to play with a lot more to do, and frankly I just don't understand like someone said above... imagine the game that could have been made with 400 million dollars of funding.

Also a lot of people are calling SC a scam, which I share the thought however on the flipside they ARE working on the game and they ARE doing things with it. I mean Roberts if he WAS a con-man you'd think he'd take the money and bounce but the project is still out there so obviously something is being done...

Taking the money outright and running would likely have at least some legal repercussions. Paying himself, family, and friends exorbitant salaries to work on a project that ends up garbage or incomplete, not so much. That's just a typical kick starter campaign lol.

I'm not sure it started as a con, project creep has always been a major problem Robert's. Without someone above his head to reign him in he would have never finished anything in the first place.

That is more sad than funny. A microcosm of the current gaming industry.
