If you need it, you need it. (y)
Yes very true as even a few years ago I could not stand having to re-download games by having anything less than 4 TB. I go back to various games all the time plus I like to test out and benchmark a whole lot of games that I have in my library. Heck I don't even have 1/3 of the games I own installed and I still have over 5 TB of games right now across my two 4 TB SSDs. Still paying $1,300 bucks at that time made me sick to my stomach but I guess I got over it since I just paid well over $2,000 for a freaking GPU...

I've been moving games to my 4TB Blacks that I want to save so I don't have to re-download them if I want to play them again.
I did recently buy one of the 2TB QVO drives since my 860 EVO 1TB got full. I went with the QVO since it was $150 for 2TB.
I probably would have sprung for this 870 EVO 4TB if I hadn't already gotten the 2TB QVO.

I'm surprised you guys don't have an easystore just plugged up to store the games as I'm sure that would be a nice amount of space for everything. :) Or a sas das unit...yummy. :D

Just delete stuff you haven't touched in over a year, it's not hard :)

I don't have anything installed that I haven't used or at least may use at any time. Like I said I keep a lot of games that I maybe go back and play for a little bit for nostalgia reasons or maybe just a benchmark or test. Now I will delete some of my porn sometimes...

How do you do it?

Unless you have really slow internet there's just no reason to keep that many games installed. Plus it's not like almost all of them ask to keep saves.

My internet is not all that fast and again this is what works for me as I when I want to play or test something then I want to do it right then.

why are people paying so much money for slow SSD's?

Gen 4 NVMe is out. This is dinosaur level speeds at 400$? what am I missing.

  • SATA isn't always the bottleneck for IO. These drives are pretty damn fast when SATA isn't the limiting factor.
  • Cooling. This drive requires close to zero thought about it.
  • The SK Hynix Gold P31, the only drive significantly and consistently better than this drive in terms perf/W, tops out at 2TB.
  • 4TB performance NVMe drives are significantly more expensive than this.

Promo is in effect again (20% off), same price. Same link as OP, use code EMCBN2839 this time.

Quite a few other drives are on this promo. Link: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=PPSSJRKZOKJOOM

Some other SATA drives that stand out to me are the 860 EVO 1TB/512GB @ $96/$56 (if you need m.2 sata) and the 870 QVO 8TB @ $584 (if you need density and are okay with lower perf/endurance).

Promo ends 1/29/2022 23:59 PST.

I remember buying a 500 megabyte HD at Sam's for $500 and a copy of Myst, were you not in the Long-Long-Ago?
You're a young boy--I remember buying a 200mb scsi maxtor for over $1100...

The most I paid for a hard drive was $350 for a 345MB SCSI Maxtor drive for my Amiga 3000 in 1993 when I bought the Video Toaster 4000 card.
My Amiga only had a 120MB hard drive and the Toaster software itself was around 100MB, came on like 45 floppies, so I had to add the 345MB drive.
I also added 8MB of ram to bring the total to 14MB. I think that was over $300 as well. The total upgrade for the Toaster, Ram, and HDD was around $3100.

You got that drive and toaster for a steal! I remember us looking into those and it was 10-12k to start.

The cards were always $2500 ish, a turnkey setup with a loaded Amiga computer was $10-12k.
When the Newtek Flyer came out that added $5k to a setup, so $15k for a Toaster NLE with no storage drives.

These were Toaster based edit stations at my last job, Toasters were only used as switchers and titlers.
We shot and edited on S-VHS. We eventually went digital with Matrox Editing systems.

Man, I wish I saw this post yesterday - I didn't know I even wanted an 8 TB SSD until I saw this, but now that I did, figure I should replace my puny 4 TB drive. Still, $711 isn't a horrible price, so I'm on board...thanks!

Nice! Yeah it was always neat to see this stuff that was way outside our reach. The closest we ever came was a Panasonic AG-456 svhs camera and some Sony SLV-R1000s decks. Sadly it seems my brother sold these off when he had possession of them. But he pretty much was the driver of video projects whereas I was just a camera man and editor. Those were some long days for sure though. Editing frame accurate on these decks took a lot of timing skill. Another skill yet lost on the kids of today who have it too easy...

Another promo on some Samsung SATA SSDs on Newegg, 25% off with code EMCBPAA52: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=PPSSZNOIEDZJUC

Compared to post #17: 870 QVO 8TB ($562.50) and 860 EVO 512GB ($48.75) prices are better, other prices are worse.

If you happen to need a 2TB 860 EVO mSATA drive, there's a shuckable T5 there too ($157.50).

I bought the Samsung 8 TB before reading more about it. Afterward, I learned that the SLC cache on it is only 78 GB, meaning that the first 78 GB of a large write will go at 500+ MB/s, whereas anything beyond the 78 GB drops down to 150 MB/s. I got the drive with the expectation that I would have large writes, so am considering returning it and waiting for something better. Now, if one is only doing network transfers to this at gigabit speeds or less it's not an issue, but just something to think about in case one decides to impulse buy this like I did. :)

Yeah

Yeah I almost got the 8TB QVO only to find that out.

it's odd that the 870 EVO is cheaper than the 860 EVO.

You can get the 870 4TB EVO right now at Samsung for $404

870 EVO 4TB is $360 on newegg again until 3/4/2022 23:59 PST, promo code EMCBQ347. Use the link in the OP.
Thank you so much!

Going to call Samsung to see if I can price match the one I bought last night at $400
