"My 10 year old just asked Alexa on our Echo for a challenge and this is what she said," Livdahl tweeted on Sunday.

Amazon said they have since resolved the fault.
"Customer trust is at the center of everything we do and Alexa is designed to provide accurate, relevant, and helpful information to customers," a spokesperson for Amazon told CNN in a statement.
"As soon as we became aware of this error, we quickly fixed it, and will continue to advance our systems to help prevent similar responses in the future," the statement said.
The trend, known as the penny challenge, emerged on social media platforms such as TikTok in 2020.

Do you really need more evidence that Alexa is evil?

I wish more people would stop using these device for their convenience and realize their true usage - mass spying machines in your home. Yes, I know, we all have cell phones...but this is that one step further in making everything in your house interconnected for convenience.

They can spy on my ass all they want rofl...Alexa does more for me than anyone in the fuckin house. Camera is blocked off though.

I prolly say more here or on facebook than what alexa hears and this is all web searchable.

We have a couple in the house since the wife likes them. Sick and tired of seeing it suggest "what are my covid restrictions?" Reminds me each time we're in a "pandemic"

Thats not the point really,,

You say that now, but one day it will bite people in the ass...

Wait till you get denied insurance because of something you said that was sold off as "anonymous data"

Thats why all of my IOT devices are on their own VLAN and have no access to any other VLAN on the network. They can have fun spying on each other.
Pihole takes care of the rest and leaves them with enough for them to work and nothing else.

Similar, I own some camera's for watching outside, they are locked down on their own and I only opened what they required. I stopped using a couple other cams because they had ports going out that the company could not explain and traffic going to Asia they could not explain either and tried to tell me I do not know what I am looking at....

To be fair the US design for plugs is very flawed specifically for that "challenge" reason

This is why AI isn't a toy. It doesn't know what trolls are or why one "challenge" is good and another is bad unless you tell it. There are a billion other bad things on the net being presented to people as good, and getting likes, positive retweets, etc, and AI will gobble it up without question, because it has (almost) no filter.

If it was just adults using it, it might be okay. But they can be just as gullible, or more so, at times.

huh? sure let em find that out lol. There is no access to my cameras inside and I have 0 in my house. I am not sure what insurance has to do with anything here or how they are going to prove I got recorded somewhere.

I have my ubiquiti cameras on their own VLAN to. Telemetry turned off in the Unify CP which does nothing so its blocked in pihole.

Remember that Twitter AI bot that had to be taken offline almost as quickly as it was put online because it immediately started saying racist horrible things because it was basing its collective intelligence on the stupid crap people say? Fun times.

Look you all. I get it you want me to be paranoid. I am not. I don't live my life with that over my head. Most of the day no one says shit where these devices are sitting unless they wanna listen to shit streaming or kids yelling. Just saying. I use this shit to my advantage not the other way around. There are no super sensitive conversations going on next to them trust me lol. The cameras are all shut off thats all I care about.

While I get your overall reasoning and worry about AWS, the house cease to function is little out of whack.

Fuck, didn't have these back in my day, born in 76, so we did it ourselves without being told, plus we were naturally curious back then.
-play with matches in the house, check.
-put plastic newspaper over our heads, check.
-stick metal things into outlets, check.
-eat mysterious berries growing at the fence, check.
-visit strange neighbors, check.
-walk alongside of a busy road to and from the corner store, ripe for a kidnapper to take, or ran over, check.

Parents didn't care, they had life insurance on us.

IMHO, if you are stupid or naive enough to delegate responsibility for your privacy, personal information, financial circumstances, health conditions etc to some automated snooper bot/giant corp/hackers etc, then by all means feel free to do so at anytime.

Just don't come cryin to me when the proverbial "shit hits da fan"......

cause all I'm gonna do is laugh, really hard & loud, right in your friggin homeless, broke, sickly, starvin, publicly-exposed, constantly-targeted & hunted face....

Ok, rant over, I now return you to your original, family-friendly programming.... brought to you courtesy of the above big data harvesters :D

You noted above you own an Alexa.. ? Alexa has been proven to record and keep data more than people think.

This is not paranoia, it is proven information based on what has been collected by these devices and their lack of security, should read some Cyber Security news once in a while and you will find out just how bad these devices are getting. You may not think you are saying anything relevant or important, but plenty of other people do, not thinking these devices are doing anything else but sitting there looking pretty...

We're not telling you to be paranoid. We're telling you you're delusional about the current state of in-house data mining. This is a thing. It's actually happening. Disagreeing with it doesn't make it untrue.

My friend is paralyzed from the neck down as the result of a tragic car accident. He was riding a bicycle when he was struck by a female drunk driver. Thanks to Alexa he can now control his TV, lights, heat, air conditioning, and even adjust his hospital style bed. Most importantly he can call his doctor or 911. All with the sound of his voice.

It has been a life changing technology that is just short of a miracle.

It does have it's uses, not saying it doesn't, it's still evil though... glad it at least is making his life easier.

Literally no one is saying it's not useful. It's incredibly useful. The focus is on unnecessary data mining. The products themselves are immensely useful. One of the bigger issues that happened recently (twice in two weeks) is that more than half the Internet is running off Amazon's servers. When their servers went down twice recently, people's houses ceased to function because everything was connected via Amazon's servers. Your friend in this situation would go back to not being able to do any of those things himself because of it, which would be awful. The point was trading convenience at the cost of privacy. In your friend's case, it's not really an option.

Also I'm sorry about your friend.

I guess what you are saying sure it sucks in some cases. I think the fact you are saying people's homes cease to function is over blown rofl. I have ligths that I can tell alexa to turn on an off, guess what? if the app was using amazon web services it still works with physical buttons. The locks still work with physical buttons. I basically have to get my ass up and flip the switches, get it? or go to the door and open the lock, get it? Sure there might be a robot vaccum that I can't use but I can live without it for a day but as far as house functioning everything can be turned on and off directly. So not sure what you are speaking off that it cease to fuction. No it didn't.

The friend of the person he was responding to is paralyzed from the neck down, so unless the button is nose high or someone else is nearby, it's about as useful as a broken doorbell. Of course, I can't imagine someone paralyzed as such living ALL on their own. I imagine someone is somewhere nearby, usually.

There are some smart devices that only work with network connectivity to Amazon's servers. You're being dismissive, ridiculous, delusional, and purposely obtuse. You know exactly what I'm referring to. Obviously if you can get up and go do something manually it's not ceasing to function. Some houses are so wholly reliant on Amazon connectivity that half of their house functionality stopped working.
