Battlefield 2042

it's playing ALOT smoother for me now then it did at launch. I've had the game crash to desktop twice, but might be my OC's. Still super disappointed in the game, but conquest has been fun even with all the missing features. Breakthrough used to be my favorite game mode and with 128 players its just not fun anymore

waste of cash?

I disabled crossplay, didn't make a difference. also, fortnite uses 30 tick server and I've never had lag.
What I'm asking for will require a game redesign. Not being able to connect to the nearest server and coding to be compatible with consoles impacts performance. You could be playing on California or European servers and live in New York. That info is hidden from you. I don't think the ping numbers are accurate.

I’ve had a ton of crashes on my Ryzen system but none on my Intel system. Enabling dx12 in the config file seems to have helped. Many have said there’s a memory leak and enabling dx12 seems to help it out some. I have double the ram in my Intel system so maybe it just hangs on for a little longer.

My take is there are pros and cons to this battlefield.

Pros
-Great weapon customization, makes weapons more versatile
-Weapons can be customized in the middle of a fight making weapons again much more versatile (SWS sniper can be used in long range and in close combat!)
-I actually like the class/specialist system. It allows you to again customize and play the way you want. You aren’t limited by a normal class system

Cons
-Animations can be janky especially in the distance
-No server browser
-Every server is the same no custom rules except in portal
-Few maps and level design is a mixed bag some areas are great and some ok
-Maps are so big you will rarely play in all areas in a single match
-The capture point decay system seems to be unforgiving. Often at the end of a match whoever has the most command points will win (despite how many tickets the team has) because the maps are so massive and it just takes too much time/effort to recover lost territory.
-I have had people basically warp into me using the grappling hook due to server lag and or animation glitches. In the kill cam I could see their janky animation warp all over the map as they used the grappling hook. I imagine something similar happens with the wingsuit.
-The specialist taunts at the end are completely cringe. This is not fortnight. If they start dancing that would be the day I leave battlefield for good

I wish there were a way to communicate "everybody rush in". There's so many situations where the enemy has a defense inside of a building and my team just camps outside of the building afraid to go in. Or worse yet, people go in one by one and get picked off. I want to see an Omaha beach style strategy where all of us just rush in simultaneously.

There are a few commands if you open the "comma rose" and hit F, not that anyone pays attention to them tho.

the rubber banding was definitely better yesterday, but the hit reg still sucks. I can be dead on target with the pump shotgun and its like I'm shooting blanks half the time.

You can bring up team chat and communicate with your team, but even so organizing something like that would be next to impossible in a game of this size (goes for all battlefields in my opinion). Many people don’t care to be organized and just want to run and gun (I’m not criticizing this..it’s their $60 they can do as they want). Organizing in smaller games like Siege (which has built-in voip) is much easier, and is intended.

The advertisements i'm seeing for this game explain quite a bit.. It's just awful. It's like the marketing department made all the key decisions for this game.

No server browser for the main mode. No real servers with a good ping or player count for Portal. Gun animations suck, at least for the Portal guns. Even the bullet casings kind of just fall out the side like a bad ArmA gun mod. Whole menu system is terrible. Kicks you out of the server after round end, throws you back into match making. I can't even pick the map I want to play if I want to try a new map. Doesn't seem like it shows ping. Every game I got it had bad lag. Not low frame rates, bad lag. Match maker must be putting me in with people faraway, or no one is playing this game and I'd lumped in with people around the globe or something. The run vs fast spring is practically zero difference in terms of speed and bringing back weapon sights. It makes the whole system pointless. I know they tried to rip off MW 2019, but they failed big time there. MW2019 elevated CoD to a new level. 2042 dumbs BF down to a level far below that.

The whole human interfacing with this game is horrible. GUI, animations. Hard to get a feel of the gameplay itself, but so much is just wrong I'm not sure if I can get into it. I thoroughly didn't like BF5 but that seemed polished and well thought out compared to this. And that is saying something.

43rd place on twitch with about 10k viewers. That has to be extremely disappointing for a brand new high-profile tripleA high budget title in a well known and previously beloved franchise.

Twitch viewership numbers tend to have a high correlation with playerbase counts of the game. I hope they can turn it around but in this day and age with free MP shooters providing high quality gameplay it's going to be an uphill battle.

There's no turning this around. Maybe, eventually, in 1-2 years, they make break Portal off and just offer people the ability to play the old games, and that will draw players in. That's the best-case scenario, I think.

If I were in charge i'd put 2042 on life support, and start working to re-release with Portal & full 1942, etc. 2042 is a lost cause, and it's already obvious. Their plan to re-brand a battle-royale game as a full BF failed miserably, to the surprise of no one besides the idiots that approved the plan at EA/DICE.

And yes, it's shocking a new BF is not in the top 5 on twitch when you look at what was released around it.

It makes you wonder why they didn't just make Battlefield: Portal as a stand alone title. Roll out all guns and maps from all Battlefields even if you add them over time.

This game really has me in a rough spot. I was hoping it would be great so I could give myself a reason to build a new PC, but with the way it turned out it doesn't sound worth it with today's GPU prices. Of course now it has made the itch worse since I started looking at possible builds.

You'll get a patch here and there to fix some obvious bugs and performance issues but that's about it and a few DLC maps.
People are going to be really disappointed if they're expecting that in a few months to a year this game will blossom to "be as great as BF4 was". After the holiday sales they've already got the maximum sales they're gonna make for the game so the cost benefit of "fixing" it with a fully dedicated dev staff after a year probably does not make sense.
They're not going to redo huge parts of the core game within a year after release with a limited support team - when they couldn't do it with a full dev team before release.
Look at battlefield 1 or V the game was infested with cheaters and giga hacking and they did absolutely nothing about it, basically abandoned the games after a year lol - not saying this game has that issue (yet)...but they simply have a track record of not completing anything anymore or even supporting their own games.
They even let FIFA and Madden go to shit and those are their cash cows. Go look at the reviews of Madden on release this year LOL the game was absolutely broken and they released it anyway.

Portal will be the only thing that saves this franchise and that's if it's supported with CONTENT and I don't mean the awful bullshit maps from 2042. We NEED real servers, all the old maps, weapons etc. for the game to survive.

I just can't believe how bad the main game is.

on steam charts, the game peaked at 100k players and quickly dropped to 50-60k and has been holding steady there. if this game had a BR, it would be in the top, people just don't want to watch games that involve respawning. it was top on twitch for a few days, like BF5 was.

Remember Steam doesn't tell the whole story, I have this on Origin as I am sure many people do. Though that is typical with games. Especially MP ones. What will matter is how much it maintains. Typically it will settle around half of the peak. For me, I can't get into a server that doesn't lag. Same shit system as BF5. I'm not sure what it is about the browser/match maker post BF4, but they've been horrible. Very results come back and it always puts me into a laggy server. I can load up BF4 just fine with a low ping server of my choice and have smooth gameplay. I just don't understand what is so hard about it. Why do I get such few results back, and why are 90% of the servers 150+ ping? That makes for a terrible MP game.

The Frostbite engine is flawed at it core when it comes to action. The engine allows for huge maps to be developed with detail, vehicles and destruction. The issues happen when objects/players begin to interact with the environments. Even in BF4 today, there are times when I'll see 4-5 enemy players bunched together, I have the jump on them, empty the entire mag and only kill 1-2 of them. Separate them and the hit reg is fine, but close together the engine doesn't know how to assign damage so many rounds don't register. That's the only flaw in BF4 I can see at times.

We always ask why DICE seem to start all over every game. I think every time DICE creates a new game, they have to deal with the shortcomings of the engine each time once live players are dropped into the maps. I'm assuming they can only fix the bugs for that game, fixes can't carry over. Every EA game has fallen short since using the Frostbite engine and it needs to be retired.

Here's JackFrags showing the same issue in 2042 (post recent patch). Dice can't get rid of it:

I watched that video a couple days ago, I've had the issue with not many players around. I'm curious if they can make the game not so much cpu bound.

I think I wasted my money on this. "Waiting for players to join". Yes sometimes I get into a server. Most of the time it just makes you sit there for what seems like eternity. What happened to looking for a server and joining? Why the fuck does it feel like it needs to "find players"? Unless everyone stopped playing, there should at least be a few thousand people online. All you hear are these retards and their cheesy lines. Even more funny is when the old grandma (old people in the infantry is dumb enough) says a cheesy line, and then it switches to the next "player" who played the same character so you get to see this character speak another cheesy line twice in a row.

Its so hard to figure out how to upgrade your guns, the interface is so slow and utter shit. I don't give two fucks about the ghetto trash black woman with tattoos on her face, her lines, or customizing her stupid face. I want to change my weapon and vehicle setups. And I want to use them in combat. Not wait in a lobby for 15-20 minutes while this shit game finds players. Hell, they even added bots and the game can't figure out how to do a proper offline with bots mode. Would be better than what we currently have which is nothing but menu watching.

What a shit game. They should just pull this shit from sale, refund everyone, and if they ever fix it release it. CD Projekt showed us they could accept refunds. Time to step up EA.

PS: Hire an English translator you cheap fucks. "Options" or "Settings" is not that same thing as "Accessibility".

BF has never been huge on Twitch as people don't want to watch a streamer die over and over again. BR's are much slower paced with a "narrative" that are much more watchable.

If we're going by Twitch as a metric, the "Just Chatting" section is almost always at the top. Does that mean that people sitting around talking is better than any video game???

To be fair, the 2700x was never a powerhouse for gaming. It's well worth updating to a 3700x or 3900x even if only for the serious single-core gains, or a 5800x/5900x if your board supports it.

will be getting a 5900 or better soon enough ...but honestly the 3d ones is what i really want :) I have never seen a game with such high of usage on a 16 threaded cpu until now

I came close to pulling the trigger on a 5900x when it was discounted some on Amazon but held off for the 3d ones as well. 3900x isn't exactly struggling just yet.

I thoroughly agree. Clearly the engine needs to be rebuilt because how they can have the same exact issues over and over without any resolution or, even worse, starting at square one every damn game, is absolutely ridiculous.

This franchise is excellent at times and pretty damn solid most of the rest but there are fundamental issues within DICE and their engine that cannot be resolved without significant changes to either.

There are about 18-20 servers in total, which die after each match. 3-4 of which have acceptable ping. 1-2 of which have a player count greater than 5. Either the browser is absolutely broken, or no one is playing. Could be a combination of both.

Everything about the game sucks. Sound mixing sucks. Balancing sucks. Splash damage for rockets and shells is far too small. The little hover craft is too powerful and makes all other transport vehicles worthless. Can't progress your weapons in Portal. Even though I managed to get into one Portal game, it was with the BF 2042 weapons and vehicles. 15 kills later, no progress on the tank or rifle. Lame. The movement is fine, but I've never played a game without frequent lag which makes everything feel floaty. Vehicle physics suck, a big step down from BF3. Just try swerving the jeeps around and you'll see what I mean. Explosion effects are not very good especially from a distance so it is hard to walk rockets onto target. The smoke looks good, explosions don't.

With lots of patches this might be a passable indie grade game. I think that is the best case scenario. I'd like to "play" it some more but I am not sure how much menu surfing I can stand. With the unlock system being garbage and there being literally only 20 or so guns, its not like there is much content to see anyways.

One thing is consistent. DICE is a shitty developer who got lucky a few times, and one of those times required a different studio to fix the game (DICE LA).

Portal isn’t going to be anything more than a novelty unless they add persistent community servers. I’m willing to bet they never add that in though.
