I water cool because it's "cool". I guess. That said, those Noctua heatsinks are no joke. My son's i7 sits in the 30 range when gaming. I don't think water cooling does much more these days when the Air coolers are the size of small cars.

Yes it is true some Air coolers are massive .I do have two different 3600MM AIO just waiting on brackets for the 1700 kit. I actually would never do full watercooling loop,I change my CPU's way to often.

How did you determine that core 4 and 6 are your best cores? (there's a few ways to do it. Curious what your method was).
Sorry to disappoint but I am just using the two preferred cores on MSI motherboard. I have been actual testing cores but really not wanting to go full nuts because of the air cooler and it takes forever to do. I figure for me takes around a month+ to test everything for me.

I have used all the different cores and they work fine. Tested up to 3 cores @ 52, 5 cores @51 was ok in testing @ CPU 1.16v but I would think it would fail after a time in long PC gaming session.
4@52 and 4@51 was not stable @ CPU 1.16 v

Currently testing @CPU 1.16v 30 minute Cinebench test pass with 88°C for run.
5100Mhz P-Core
4000Mhz E-Core
4100Mhz Ring

Anyway a more real answer would be on MSI MEG motherboards to use CPU Force 2 to estimate if you have a Good/Bad CPU for overclocking. Similar to SP on ASUS Motherboards.
CPU Force 2:

  • Lower the score, lower Vcore for stability. Better overclocking capability
  • Score cannot be compared between different segments. For example, an i9-12900k scored 95 is not better than a 98 i7-12700K
  • CPU force can identify the physique of the CPU (overclocking potential)

Yes of course it going to hit 100+°C with 360AIO if you run default settings,the CPU voltage run around 1.22v-1.28v.That voltage without any adaptive voltage or straight up full watercooling/phase change is needed.
Over at overclock the 12900K people are using adaptive voltage for the high overclocks on ASUS Boards and on air you can also use the same technique to tame the 12900K.
I am not trying to trick anyone and I even done a guide on adaptive voltage on MSI motherboard,which I will spam again here.

I think that I will sell my 12900K if this is true, I can't try it since there is no DDR5 in Europe yet.
 
Well it is a monster and to cool it you need a monster. I can run my 12900K at 5700Mhz and still have single threaded performance and and play PC games but I could not run Cinebench at 5700Mhz my PC would explode.
All I can tell you the above test are at default settings and they are my results. I would never run default settings on any CPU especially an Intel one.

This is so true.Time to install 360AIO today to see if there is any actual difference from the air cooler

A large air cooler from Noctua, or something of similar performance, is going to equal a premium 240 aio and quite a few 360 aios with less maintenance worry about pump failure but more weight and stress placed on your motherboard.

I've found water cooling is a lot more beneficial when dealing with a custom loop. That my loop uses enough radiators and nearly a gallon of water means that even when the pump is stopped for some reason there is enough of a thermal mass and heat exchange to safely run the computer (gpu and cpu) as long it's not actively, full-out gaming.

Nah I only PC game 4K and the CPU actually does not matter. I just like buying them and playing with them. At 10 different CPU's in the last 2 years.This 12900K will be gone as soon as AMD drops a CPU.
btw, what's your ambient temp..?
Just normal house .Heat/Air Condition set to 22°C 365 days of the year.

Manual voltage = 1.300V
Load Line Calibration = 4
1-2 cores ratio = 55
3-4 cores ratio = 52
5-8 cores ratio = 51

Used the AI Features page to check what 2 cores required the least voltage. (the "best" cores...)

Set max ratio per core to 52 for the 6 other cores. The 2 "best" cores leave on Auto.


Fun to play with, but it's back to stock as this is going to be my work computer.

That's pretty impressive because a U12A would struggle to cool a 11700K much less a 11900K without resorting to maxing out fan speed.

Every 12900K CPU is different.You want to fine the default voltage at a particular clock here is how to do it on a cheap Motherboard.You got expensive Motherboard it will show V/F Curve
  • All P-cores at 49X - 49 is default
  • Disable the E-cores
  • Set the Ring ratio to 8X
  • Reboot
  • Check CPU voltage - approximately close to real voltage but not 100%
