Question about current state of crypto mining

Hi all,

I was looking into getting into mining a while back and was going to look into the 3060 series of cards, but this was before the massive increase in price and also before nvidia decided to nerf the cards ablitys. I also put the project on hold due to that i watn to set up a good size farm that im planning on setting up around a 15k-20k solar power system to so i wont have any over head so when prices do crash i can wait and hold until markets recover.

Is there a way to get around the nerf that nvida put on the cards for mining? to get back to the full mining potential?

Due to etherum looking to getting away from pow method, What would be potential cryptos to start researching?

I know this can be a very open question, but what would be good cards to focus on that where similar to the 3060 that had a good hash-rate to power usage ?
 
I have LHR cards and I used NBMiner to mine Ethereum at 69% of the cards potential instead of just 50%.
But now I switched to Ravencoin which allows you to mine without the LHR restriction and will be around after Eth goes 2.0.

Granted, when Eth does go 2.0 it will be wack-a-mole of what coin will emerge as the new Eth.

Ethereum is now in second place in popularity after bitcoin. Try to explore this cryptocurrency.

It really will be interesting to see what happens with all that hash power when it no longer can work on Eth. The ASICs will have no choice but ETC which may be more than it can absorb.

Where is all that GPU power going to go? ERGO difficulty has been on the rise the past few weeks. I use to be able to get one erg per day, now it is like 0.6.
 
You may be better off getting a recent/just launched ASIC or ASICs. You will have to do research and know they are limited on one algorithm and what coins can be mined with that algorithm. I bought 2 ASICs about a year apart, both are now long gone in the trash can (wished I held on to the second one longer) -> 1st one if I sold all the coins mined now I would make a small profit (I am holding those coins, so unknown if that investment will be good or bad. Second ASIC I already made 30x over the investment and I still have 2/3's of the coins mined (BIG WIN). Educated guess, lucky guess, who knows -> Anyways I picked an ASIC that could mine a number of coins that were growing and a few that were already well placed, strategy paid off.

As for GPUs, hard for me to see a good path with todays pricing with the current time period and availability. The Crypto market may have already peaked and will start going down (nothing is set in stone and maybe this is not the case). Anyways it already climbed, the almost vertical gains, how much more would one expect that to continue? With GPUs you can pick coins that may explode in the future and accumulate them, stashing them aside. Also can cash out as you go along which depending upon market conditions can pay some bills. You have to decide what options you want to play, how to allocate your resources, take the short gain or long term waiting game that may pay beyond your wildest dreams. For GPUs it may best wait for a market crash and then nab them on a huge discount, mine coins you think will have a chance to grow big in the future. There were a number of folks that mined Ethereum when it was less than $200, low mining engagement meaning raking in coins with reduced difficulty level and held onto them, when it reached $4000 cashed out 1/2 of them minting a small fortune while keeping the other 1/2 for another sunny day.

Lots of people looking at ravencoin/ergo as alternative POW mining. Other good power efficient cards: 1660 super, 3060ti, 3070, 6600 XT

Once eth goes pos we might see the top end cards drop in price. Hoping for a flood of non lhr cards and possibly 3090s available again, since the roi will be much worse with eth gone.
 
The RTX 3090 GPU is gaining in popularity. I own 2 of them; each generates about $10 Canadian a day ($8 USD / Day). This gives me about $600 CAD a month. The common wisdom is that the 3090 should be avoided, as it is not as efficient as other 3000 series cards. But the 3090 is the only 3000 series card that Nvidia didn't cripple with a nerfed driver. As such, it has no limitations on what it can mine. My local cost for power is about $18 per month per card. At this rate, efficiency makes no practical difference; but having access to a non-nerfed driver is a significant advantage. I don't think I would purchase a card with a nerfed driver, so the 3090 is the only practical choice. There's also the advantage that, because miners don't consider them, they are more available.

I mean the rx 580s are nice and all, but i need four of them to equal one 3090. There is only so much space in the garage.

Yeah. I was dreading buying 6600xt's if they came out as the efficiency kings. It would be nice I guess, but you're paying a decent premium per card when you divide out the total cost of a psu, cpu, motherboard, ram, and risers. I just rule of thumb that I'll spend at least $20 / card on that stuff so comparing 4 x 6600xt's vs 1 x 3090 means you need to add about an extra $80-100 or so to the 6600xt side to take into account the extra costs.
 
If you have the room, two 3070/3060Tis is basically the equivalent to a 3090, runs cooler because it's non GDDR6X memory, and is about 60W more efficient for the same hash power.
 
For anyone considering a 3090 for mining, just keep in mind that the GDDR6X VRAM memory runs HOT. Doesn't matter what variant...temps are known to get above the >110C threshold and throttle. The core temps will be fine >60C but VRAM temps will be >110C and throttle the card. Only way around it is to use an external fan blasting air onto it or replacing the thermal pads + re-pasting. Otherwise an amazing card for mining and can easily get 120mh/s.
 
I have seen pics of the 3090 modified with the backplate covered with aluminum heatsinks and with. I would probably do that if I had one.

I repadded and then put an old AMD heatsink right on the backplate of my 3090FE. Keeps temps while mining around 95C.

I got the aluminum heat sink and mounted a fan to it...I also get 120 with temps in the mid 90s

I also have the same model card with a bykski wb and it runs at 126 with temps more in the 60-70s.

Which heatsink? I was looking at something on Amazon to make it a little "lower profile."
