Apple Developing Mental Health Monitor for iPhone

Hmm.... I wonder why our life expectancy is increasing year after year... couldn't be because of all the modern medicines and treatments available...
"take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe."

Can we please drop the hyperbole?

Most likely, Apple would do what it already does with other health detection features, like atrial fibrillation — notify the user so they can contact their doctor if they're concerned. Knowing how Apple actually does things, I can't see how this would be anything other than a help if it's reasonably accurate.
I want to start by saying I mostly agree with you. A tool is only bad when used incorrectly.

There is a bit of a social risk with this type of thing though. If the right circumstances of politics and social will happened you could easily see something like this get rolled into something like banking access. I can easily see arguments being made for a bank to "check your mental health before delivering services to avoid fraud, elderly abuse, and coercion.". In 95% of cases this would be a good thing... but oh boy that 5% is going to make your worst nightmare look like a children's show.

Remember the fear isn't that the tool will automatically be used poorly but that people will become complacent with its misuse. This is something many of the privacy-focused among us keep trying to stress while everyone else just keeps yelling "well if you have nothing to hide". It isn't about hiding. It's about the tool now existing and its capacity to be used to prevent someone from choosing to hide a part of their lives or to engage in free choice(even if that choice is stupid).

People forget that in an actual free society you have to be legally allowed to be stupid(up to and including engaging in illegal behavior).

Now with that bit is out of the way I REALLY hope this works. I really in ways you cannot imagine hope this works. I have so many friends that would have been potentially saved by something like this had they had even a tiny electronic friend in their worst moments.
Please do NOT let this be just some crappy machine learning version of WebMD.

I largely agree. I don't think Apple would ever let non-medical app developers have that kind of information (and even then, there would likely be tight limits), but we'd have to be sure that remained true.

This is not new.

Youtube used to think I was depressed and single because I was up late talking to my girlfriend in a different time zone, watching shitty youtube content, lol.

I wonder if it’ll tell me to calm down. Because when I tell my wife to calm down, it totally works. By totally I mean never and a black eye.

I mean numb the brain with drugs or numb it with a jolt of electricity. Not sure how I feel about that now.

this stuffs entering the realm of creepy tho. i'm not even gonna post the pictures/videos of the human/pig chimeras that were released today.

Apple: Develop a product that makes people depressed
Also Apple: Develop and app for the product which monitors their depression.

They already have this feature, it's when Android and Windows users look at them, thinking they're mindless sheep buy overpriced crap with fewer features.

Sounds like a pretty logical progression. Did you want them to cancel their hundreds of billions in dollars of revenue just so a different phone manufacturer could fill the void? Seems like the responsible thing to do is give people tools to mitigate the downside.

If a person attacks others simply for using a platform they don't like... who's the one with mental health issues? I'd say that screams "insecure and selfish" very loudly.
