(DEAD) Black Mesa [Steam] $4.99

unfortunately since I played this game 20 years ago its going much quicker this time. I recall having a much harder time with most of this.

I had the same experience when I replayed the original Half-Life (not Black Mesa) maybe 10 years ago.

I had remembered Half-Life being a challenging game, but when I replayed it back then (I didn't play all the way through, only up until Surface Tension) I was struck by how easy it was compared to last time. Since I was playing the original, and not Black Mesa I didn't pin it on any changes in the game.

I credit that to primarily two things:

1.) Better hardware. I'm fairly sure I wasn't getting a constant 60+fps back in 1997.
2.) Better skillls. Let's face it. Decades of FPS games later, you have to hope that all that practice at least improves your game a little bit.

I'm fairly sure I wasn't getting a constant 60+fps back in 1997.
My target was 30fps back then. In the days of analogue monitors it was more acceptable. They added just the correct amount of fudge to everything.

I'm finding it so much easier because every time I come to a difficult part, I go "oh, I remember this!" And excitedly complete the challenge in moments. There's no mouse smashing, long walks, cold showers, etc.

I'm sure for the right price you could hire me to irritate you if the game isn't doing it enough for you. :D

Maybe if you wait long enough your memories of the game will fade so it will feel like a brand new experience again. That or try some of the many fan created single player mods for Half-Life. Most aren't quite as polished as Valve, but some come pretty close from what I can recall all those years ago. I remember playing They Hunger, USS Darkstar, and Poke646 and enjoying them to various degrees.

I vaguely recall some of those mods myself. It's the mental challenges, figuring things out. I do like that hl1 was more of a traditional old game in the sense that it wasn't a shooter in a hallway style, you often have to double back after changing something.
Disappointing is the wrong word, but the boss fights are easy because I remember too much. I actually thought I had forgotten, but actually doing it again it's like second nature.

The graphics updates and sound are great though. This game is great.

Also, if you guys already played all the HL games and want something in the same style, check G-String.

It's one of those games where you don't really know what's going on, but it is very similar to HL2 in terms of the action and puzzles.

Also note they didn't change the developer to Valve. That just warms my heart, knowing this was really just a big fan-driven mod and they got recognized for it.

Well worth the regular price, Black Mesa was a steal at $5.

A shame we'll never get the HL3 we all want and deserve.

only some people deserve HL3, imo... I'd be happy with an episode 3, as short as the others, to conclude the story somehow

Yeah, Valve could never release Half Life 3 at this point. It has been hyped up so much it would instantly be the most hyped game in history if it were announced, much more so than CyberPunk 2077 was, and no game could live up to that. People will be disappointed no matter what.

It's a Lose-Lose proposition for them.

If they had done it right away and wrapped up the story line rather than quitting it with a cliffhanger, it would have been feasible, but now 14 years after Episode 2, there is no way.

I'd settle for episode 3 as promised...
