5900x / dark Hero / Idle temps issue and voltage when gaming

has op confirmed that YOUR solution fixed HIS problem?! i havent seen it...
That is for the op to try but given he has the same setup and same problem, I'd wager it does....but again not what you call thread jacking, that would be going in a completely different tangent...

half the thread became you and responses to you, yeah it kinda got jacked, yes its the same topic. try not to get so offended by a internet term.
 
So this seems to be a windows bug, randomly on certain reboots the cpu frequency gets stuck at the 4.3 Ghz range and does not clock down even with all CPCC CnQ options enabled in the bios. I'm long overdue for a fresh windows install so will probably try that when I have some time, for now just use DT shortcuts for balanced and powersaver mode depending on usage...
 
Got a 5900x on pbo with curve optimizer, got a 240mm ek aio with push/pull fans in a sealed positive air pressure case with filtered intakes (absolutely a must if you have a lot of furry animals running about like I do) and ambient temp is 24C. My 5900x with an asus dark hero mobo idles at 32C and 68C max temps at end of 10 minute cone bench r23 run. Definitely not normal to be idling at 40C unless you have programs running background tasks. Try msconfig start up options and disable programs from starting automatically when you login and see if your idle temps decrease.

Could you share your full settings?

No I have nothing running, 1% cpu usage at idle. I've installed another power plan (ryzen balanced v4) and I have idle temps around 35 with it and all works fine

Sure, fclk 1900mhz, docp 3800mhz, manual mem timings 14-14-14-28, 1.5V dram voltage, pbo on with motherboard power limits, uncore/soc OC mode enabled, curve optimizer -12 on 4 best cores, -30 on the rest, cpu power phase mode optimized, soc phase mode extreme, dram phase mode extreme, cpu current limit 140%, dram current limit 130%, windows power plan balanced, I think that’s it, and I’ve thoroughly stress tested the system. But every cpu is different so my settings shouldn’t be used as a template.

Nothing pops out at me for being something that causes high idle temps, perhaps turning vrm spread spectrum and active frequency mode back to auto and using the normal balanced windows power profile (not the ryzen balanced profile) and see if that works. If not I’d check your cpu cold plate install and thermal paste application.
 
The balanced profile helps a lot with temps actually

However my load temps are good, depending on games it's maxing at 60/65, so I guess it's all fine i'll check it all later theres no danger :)

For active frequency I don't remember touching that i don't know what it is

Spent too much time on this already, just gonna reinstall windows fresh one of these days..

Sounds like you have a lot of background process running. If you have 2-5% load when "idle" then 65w is not uncommon due to one or more cores spinning up.

Nothing different between two different boots, same processes running each time...

Upon further inspection, THANK YOU! Windows Image Acquisition was causing the problem, the moment I started restarting this service, CPU clocked down to 3.2 Ghz, probably drivers for my old epson scanner I'm thinking but all of these months pulling my hair out and that was it.I'd previously eliminated all HW utils like iCue, Armory Crate, Precision X1 etc. one by one since those came up in most posts about high usage, never suspected something running under native svchost to be the issue...threads like this remind me why is pays to be H :)

It causes the VRM switching frequency to automatically go up when CPU current draw goes up.
 
I don't know why it's disabled in my bios
Should I activate it /auto or leave it disabled?
 
I'll leave it off then, I thought it could be the reason I have that idle temps
 
That WIA issue should probably be stickied somewhere, I've spent atleast 6-8 hours total trying to debug it on and off over the past few months and can't still believe that's all it was, even thought of RMA'ing the CPU or board at one point lol.

thats normal too, it should be on the balanced plan to allow it to throttle down all the way.

The plan I'm using is a custom one which works very good though :)

I would definitely look at your cpu cooler install as I have ek 240 aio with push pull but as exhaust so it’s sucking on warmer than ambient air instead of your ek 360 in taking cooler ambient air. I used a screw driver and made sure the mounting screws for the cold plate were as tight as possible without breaking the threads or bolt. Also did you use the ek thermal paste that came with the cooler? If so that stuff isn’t the best. I use thermal grizzly kryonaut ultra which is arguably the best
 
It's all set up properly I'm sure of it and I used kryonaut :) I guess Its OK since load temps are very good
