Microsoft broke Windows 11 injecting ads

For something you guys claim happened a week ago... it seems MS is really slow fixing things then. lol

https://blogs.windows.com/windows-i...g-windows-11-insider-preview-build-22000-176/

Looks like Microsofts suggested Temp fix is to shut down their IrisService... which I guess is some sort of ad service that messed up yesterday apparently pushing a teams ad.
reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\IrisService /f && shutdown -r -t 0

I am sure its not new to 11... but if its not new to 11 you would think they would have it a little more polished, and by polished I mean actually working. I'm sure its a minor fix... but I still find it funny so. :p

it was doing it before, maybe its doing it again. regardless its the dev/beta, not rtm or already on consumer systems. thats the point of the dev/beta cycle.

The full release is coming in 1 month. Not like this is an early alpha or something, I doubt the final version will be much different (though they obviously fixed this specific issue).

Also, if you look at the link I posted, machines getting ready to be sold in October may have already been built, meaning they will ship with this bug if you don't do Windows Update.

I forget I am lucky with Enterprise and don’t have to deal with this crap…… never gonna run Home edition that’s for damned sure.

Best most of us can hope for is Professional, which is slightly better, but not much.

Wish they would sell LTSB or Enterprise to the rest of us and not shove their bullshit down our throats.

looks i got off win11 just in time lol i removed it last week and restored my image i made before i gave it a try.

Wait Windows 11 is going to have ads? Why have people not been pissed about that yet?

Putting ads straight in the OS is completely obnoxious and really crossing a line.
Not that it improves things, but didn't windows 10 already feature ads for applications from the windows app store right on the login screen?

It's been a while since I've setup a windows system, so I may be misremembering.

Yes, Win 10 already had ads (e.g. on the lock screen).

MS would also show ads for Edge in the Start menu. So while I don't like it, it's not exactly new.

I don't remember ever seeing them.

Maybe they don't show them if you don't use the Microsoft store and only use local accoubts?

Ads (on the lock screen, at least) would show also if the system had local account only and never used the app store. I distinctly can recall that is the case because they showed up at first startup after install.

What exact release of 10 was this? Was it Home or Professional? I've been using Windows 10 since pre-release and don't ever remember seeing something like this. I've only ever used Professional at home though and Enterprise at work. No lame Home edition here.

I use the Pro version usually. It's not like they are ads for Viagra or something, usually just MS products like Edge or OneDrive and stuff like that.

I have literally never seen them. I get the lock screen and sometimes a little.bubble that says something like "on the border of Tuscany and Umbria" or something like that, but I have never seen any ad of any sort on the lock screen, not even for Microsoft apps.

thats cause you have to turn them on, and theyre not really ads.

'I`m sorry , Is this some sort of home edition joke that I'm too enterprise to understand?'

Yeah, I guess I've been spoiled as well. I've been noticing that many of the features I've taken for granted as ordinary are only available on Enterprise. That bothers me for a number of reasons, none of which belong in this thread.

It's terrible that all of the consumer editions are crippled in some way -- even "Pro for Workstations". There should be a retail equivalent to Enterprise for those willing to pay.

This chart is for Windows 10 but I'm assuming 11 will be similar:

Honestly looks like Microsoft got their claws out of 10 as time went on. I could swear it has built in advertising functions out the gate in the live tiles and ie/edge splash pages. But I don’t see much of a mention it there unless I missed it.

This isn't new because I am asked once in a while to buy Office 365. I rebooted my PC a week ago and for some reason before I could log in I'm told that Office 365 is 50% off. Microsoft has no shame. This is why once Valve releases their Deck console and Linux is in a better place to play games then I'll be switching my main gaming PC to Linux. Specifically Linux Mint. Windows 11 looks like Windows 8 REFORGED, and I never touched Windows 8 ever besides to install Windows 7 or 10. Considering how much crap Microsoft is trying to push onto people with Windows 11 I think I'm done with Windows.

Same reason people don't care about privacy - they just don't care enough to make a change. With Win10, MS started tracking everything you do (including keystrokes) and most people accepted it anyway.

So I get to skip win 10 and win 11? Thank you for making that easier again, Microsoft.

I plan on going to Windows 11 when I upgrade my system to DDR5 (I can't now due to having incompatible hardware). By that time, Microsoft will have either fixed it so it isn't a steaming pile or the tech community would have found away around the ads. Good thing I run a crazy restrictive pi-hole for things like this.

exactly, i guess i wasnt clear enough with "its not an ad". all it said was "teams is now included/integrated blah blah" in a little bubble, for some it screwed up explorer.
if you turn off chat in the taskbar options, its goes away(turns teams off).

It runs a service... it fetches the not an add from their internet service, just to display it on their lock screen. Yes its an AD. The fact it is advertising something they sell and so far MS isn't advertising dick pills makes it much less offensive sure. Still the infrastructure is identical. Its still using system resources and network bandwidth... will MS ever use it for more then self advertisement. Probably not on proper versions of windows at least... but I wouldn't be shocked to find dick pill ads in WIndows home version at some point.

The real news here imo isn't the ads anyway. Its that windows broke when it couldn't or at least didn't properly contact its ad server. Yes yes its a beta... and it won't actually be a official shipping product for a month and a bit. Still I find it interesting that it broke. That the fix mentions Iris makes me wonder how exactly how deeply its hooked into a 11 and if this is a reuse of the name or if this is a service to enable MS Iris cloud network project. Not sure what MS plans to use the service for beyond serving team ads.. and it might even be useful if it helps speed Microsofts cloud based apps. To me though I see a service capable of breaking things fairly easily pretty late in a beta. I smell a massive new security vector.

Things like this = why they won't let you turn off that giant "Recommended" section taking up 40% of the Start Menu. I can only hope that registry edits or 3rd part tools will.
