Official PS5 Thread

So am I missing something? Why is it that if you only have a PS4 at the moment, and REALLY want a PS5 but just can't find one... why can't you start buying PS5 games now and play them on your PS4 until you can find a PS5? Like Horizon Forbidden West is an example. If you buy the $70 PS5 version you should just be able to insert that disc into a PS4 and play the PS4 version until you have a PS5.

But you're probably asking; why not just buy the PS4 version now and upgrade to the PS5 version later? Well why should you HAVE to do that if you OWN the game? What if you want the PS5 case and you don't want to continue buying PS4 games when you eventually want to buy a PS5?

I really feel like Xbox's system of "Smart Delivery" is so easy to understand compared to the PS5 and not to mention that Series X-optimized games aren't $10 more. Whatever system you have, the game will be played on the best version for that system automatically.

Also it's really frustrating you can't preload games you don't own yet. You can do that on Xbox, but not on PS5... like I have COD: Cold War coming from Gamefly... it would have been nice to be able to preload the likely 100+ GB game before I get the disc in but I can't.
Smart delivery is excellent and MS is being very good about features and flexibility for their software.

In terms of game pricing.....so far its mostly or maybe even only been PS5 exclusives, which are $69. Sony is the market leader in hardware and has a lot of well reviewed exclusives. They can charge more. That said, you can get games day 1 from Walmart and some other places, for $10 less.
Also, you can get a full powered PS5, for $400. And extra internal storage isn't proprietary.

MS has maybe a handful of true exclusives. But also, their gameplan is to ultimately get people to pay the "low" price subscription of gamepass. They can't compete on exclusives. So they are competing on price and flexibility for software.

Nintendo has incredible first party exclusives, is the only portable offering, and you can get in for $200.

Each company has their positives and negatives.

Well with the purchase of Bethesda and the existing/upcoming 1st party exclusives coming to Xbox the "no games" argument is going to be moot... Starfield, Halo Infinite, Horizon 5, Hellblade 2, Stalker 2, Psychonauts 2, and a lot of others... I just got my PS5 last week, and between the services, and the UI the Xbox is by and large the superior platform from my experience with both at this point. The most simple of things I just can't get over on the PS5...

  • Preloading games you don't own yet. You can do this on Xbox but not on PS. Good example why this is good is that I have Cold War coming via Gamefly. It sure would be nice to preinstall that on my PS5 before I have the disc, but I will have to wait hours to download Cold War and it's patches once I get it.
  • Organization of the home screen. The PS5 UI is a mess. The PS4 UI I could organize my games by platform (PS4, PS3/PS2, Retro, etc), but the PS5 UI's 70% of the screen is taken up by info of the game who's card is selected. Information I don't give a shit about. It should just be a list of games that can be organized into folders without having to scroll to the far right to my game library and having to find the game alphabetically. On Xbox once you are at the home screen, with a single trigger pull I can go group-by-group to the game group I want to play and select quickly, but in most cases I don't do that anymore because everything I am playing is in Quick Resume.
  • Sharing screenshots and videoclips. With Xbox when you take a screenshot or videoclip it's automatically uploaded online, so when I am talking with friends and want to share something I recently took a screenshot of I can either pull up Xbox DVR online or through the Xbox app on my phone and show or share directly to other messaging apps. PS5 doesn't do this. It appears as though sharing can only be done either from console-to-console using messages, or by loading the clips and screenshots onto a thumb drive and showing them that way.
  • Game transfers from external hard drives. I transferred 4 games from a external HDD to the internal SSD of the PS5 and I had to stay on the transfer screen the entire time with no completion ETA while it did that. That was ridiculous. In comparison shortly after that I was transferring 3 games from the Series X's expansion card to internal memory, went to the home screen, and continued playing a game from Quick Resume while it was still transferring in the background.
  • Quick resume. I have 5 or 6 games running at all times on my Xbox that I can instantly jump in and out of. You simply can't do that with the PS5. Every game loads individually. Yes you can get to certain parts faster using the Game's hub, but that's mostly for people who give a shit about trophies which I don't.
  • Smart Delivery. Play the best version of any game on whatever machine you're playing it on. I don't have to worry about whether the game I am buying is a "Xbox One or Xbox Series" game. Whatever disc I put in the system is the one I can play. If a game is Series X enhanced and you put it in a regular OG Xbox One it will still play just with the expected shortcomings. You can't buy a PS5 game and use it on a PS4, and you can't buy a PS4 game and use it on a PS5 to get the better graphics and features without paying usually the $10 upgrade fee.
  • First-party exclusives are $10 cheaper (yes I know some retailers sell them lower at launch but the point still stands)
  • Game Pass. Game Pass is an amazing deal and I don't think PlayStation Plus/Now even compares when all first-party titles release there on launch day as well as their past libraries being accessible along with EA's catalog of games.

All that being said I love my PS5, but there is a lot of improvement that needs to happen. I am happy I have one for the exclusives, and the Dualsense controller is truly the greatest thing the PS5 has going for it right now.

Sony is definitely behind on features and a cohesive experience.

Video and screenshot sharing works so well on Xbox, most likely due to MS leveraging their Azure cloud to store all of that stuff. Sony would probably have to spend a ton of money to build or rent space, to turn on auto-upload features like that for every playstation user. Whereas MS has been building up Azure for years.

Assuming Microsoft's plan pans out with their dev studio purchases: those exclusives and gamepass, could become major force in the industry. However, Sony will remain a strong force. Because they have had games, have games now, and will have games in the future. Regardless of having a feature or not having a feature, good games are ultimately why we do this.

Xbox lets you download games that you don't own (but anticipate owning soon on disc presumably)? That's interesting and I've never heard of that. PS4/5 does let you pre-load games though for the digital copies. I've went all-digital on all my consoles so I don't have to worry about losing/breaking discs (esp. with kids) or swapping them out. So I pre-order digital copies and pre-load them a few days out before launch like you can do on any other platform really.

The UI really was a regression from PS4 and I miss my folders for sure though. I really hope they bring that back in some form soon.

As for owning both PS4 and PS5 versions of games, that seems to be up to the publishers on whether they want to charge for the PS5 upgrade or not, as most of the 1st party titles charge for the upgrade, but many 3rd party titles I've got give you both versions (It takes Two, A Plague Tale, Control, from what I remember). I just found this decent list that shows all the games that come with free upgrades though. It's also worth noting that most Sony published titles have received free patches for PS5 that enhance the BC performance and resolution at least to 4k/60. I think the only notable games that haven't now are the Uncharted games. Of course no Bloodborne patch though, which isn't expected since it never even got a PS4 Pro patch.

Yeah so the Xbox lets you preload literally any game... so if you say preordered a physical game on Amazon and they are shipping it soon you can download it before you get the disc and once you get the disc you're good to go... especially in the case of GameFly and upcoming Game Pass titles it's super convenient. I got Last of Us Part 2 yesterday in the mail and was super excited to play it, but I had to wait over an hour for it to install and download all patches... would have been nice to do that before I got the game in the mail.

My point is that there should be no upgrade fee. Xbox Series X enhanced versions of games don't cost $10 more, and again a LOT of people can't buy PS5s at the moment... so if you are stuck on a PS4 and you want to play Horizon Forbidden West you HAVE to buy the PS4 version of it. Also I just read today that Gorilla Games went back on what they said and won't even have an upgrade path from PS4 to PS5... if you want to play on your PS4 you have to buy the PS4 version and once you get a PS5 you have to buy the whole game again. That's complete bullshit.

what some of this comes down to, is that MS has a ton of money and they have never been afraid to spend it, to keep Xbox competitive. When the Xbox 360 had widespread RROD failures ---- MS set aside 1 billion dollars, to cover the replacements. And handed out 25 million in free Xbox live cards, with each replacement. The Xbox brand should have sunk. But MS threw enough money at it to make the replacement process as easy as possible. Even when individuals experienced multiple console failures.

Sony at that time, would have had a really hard time losing that much additional money on Playstation.

Its likely MS has agreements with devs to cover costs of a users upgrading for free between versions/smart delivery/etc.

Making games costs money. Making different versions/ports of games costs money. Developers often can't eat that. MS eats it for them.

Sony is in a better spot than they were in the PS3 days. But even now, likely doesn't have the money to easily do what MS is doing.

Sony skimped in some weird areas. They don't support much in the way of audio/video codecs, which keeps the PS5 from being a particularly great streaming or home theater device. The X1 and Series X machines are absolutely fantastic, though.

Are you talking about with official content like streaming services and blu-rays? or do you mean streaming files from a private network share and/or viewing movie rips, etc?

100% legitimate content. The console doesn't support Dolby Vision at all (which isn't shocking), but Atmos is only supported via Blu-Rays and even HDR is a mixed bag. Atmos doesn't work for any streaming service and it isn't supported in games. There's a system setting for enabling HDR only when HDR content is being displayed. If you have that turned on, you'll discover that only a couple streaming services (Netflix is luckily one) are actually outputting HDR content and not just mimicking it via the system settings. Disney+ is one of the ones that doesn't. I forget which one, but either Hulu or Amazon is another.

Yeah I dunno. Sony's features and firmware team are way too slow. It took 9 - 10 months to get the firmware out for adding extra internal storage------and its beta firmware. Still no VRR support (also no VRR in Sony TVs).

I'm dying for that freaking firmware. I wish I could install the beta firmware but alas I've received no invite to do it.

I have to imagine VRR will be coming to the PS5 eventually, but their TV's (and AVR's) are notoriously always a year behind everyone else when it comes to new tech. I'm not holding my breath for Atmos or especially Dolby Vision support. They're all-in with their weird proprietary "3D sound tech" that's just a headphone software solution. On the HDR front, HDR technology (as a whole) is still in its infancy anyway. For me it's just disappointing because MS's machines are fantastic streaming devices. They're on par with Amazon's Firestick/Cube and the systems have calibration functions so that everything looks/sounds correctly. On most devices you'll have one service that has the contrast blasting and others that look washed out. Not on the Xbox. It's actually what I miss most about having an Xbox. As a media device, it was top tier.

Did they ever fix simply being able to just launch your game even if there is a update available for it on xbox? Legit one of the most incredibly annoying things that ps4 had over a xbox 1 for me was I could just turn on my console and play.

The Xbox One and Series X if in Instant On mode would update the games when the Xbox is not even on. I had the Xbox One X and play the Series X frequently since launch and i've never once ran into a issue where I turn a game on and can't play it because there is an update.

In fact, with the Series X now you can get into and out of games instantly because of Quick Resume. They are basically save-states for games that are stored in memory. I have Forza, Gears, Mad Max, Rage 2, and others in Quick Resume and I can instantly resume any of those games from where I left off. So no loading or anything... you're instantly back in the game from the place you left.

Bought a $$$ gen 4 drive only to find the firmware is not easily obtained :( when did you sign up
it took about 2 weeks form the time I signed up to get my invite, honestly if I could give it you I would as I haven't even bothered to actually install the beta since I have gotten it lol

I signed up at least 2 weeks ago I would say. But it says that there is no guarantee you get an invite by signing up. Also rumor has it that the official firmware update that includes the SSD upgrade option will be rolling out anyway later this month... But who know really other than Sony and they're quoted as saying "later this year." If the rumor is true then it could explain why no new Beta invites have been going out lately.

Anyone playing demons souls that wants to help me out ? I need invasions as I messed up world tendency and killed all the bosses lol

I just can't get into this Ratchet and Clank game. We are incompatible apparently. Just clunky and loaded with worthless constant unskippable cut scenes.

Agree or disagree? I do think Sony would do well (same as anyone else) to not take any positive momentum for granted.
Agree. Sony has gotten too comfortable with their dominating market position. This combined with the focus on huge budget exclusive titles priced at $70 is most likely going to hurt them in the long run this generation. Microsoft have been taking advantage of their acquisitions, releasing a lot of exclusives over the past year and a half. What has Sony released since the launch of the PS5? Anything other than Ratchet & Clank and Returnal?

As much as I love my PS5, I haven't bought anything for it recently. It has been a pretty slow year for gaming in general, though. But hey, Deathloop will be out next week and that's something. I'm getting the PC version, but I'd have zero qualms playing the PS5 version instead. Not sure if that game is a big deal to non-hardcore gamers, though.

Really, I think this whole thing highlights a shift in the culture and expectations of gamers. And it seems to stem from the good old days of Steam sales.

Gamers expect everything for less or for free. I'm not sure where people think the money is supposed to come from for the next games, if you don't pay for the ones you are playing, now. But this sort of pushy attitutde from gamers, is going to cause several companies to keep looking at in-game purchases and making games as a service games. Stuff which makes millions per day----but there will be less variety and even less risks than even now.

Microsoft is a VERY rich company. And they are being VERY bullish right now, throwing money at the Xbox brand. In doing so, they are distorting how games are made and supported. Its always been that hardware is sold at a loss or break even----and games sales are where the money is made. If games are given away for free or for lower prices, or several available via a subscription: its a whole different situation. And it will be interesting to see how it changes the development landscape.

With gamepass...MS are essentially setting themselves up to become the largest game publisher in the industry. They are shifting the culture of gamers. And I think they are hoping that their pile of money will last longer than Sony's or anyone else.

Pressure from gamer culture and also the internet, can be difficult to deal with and to keep up with. It seems clear to me that Sony is having to deal with a lot of that, right now. And I do not think they deserve a lot of it. That article says that Sony is greedy. But really, I think modern internet gamer culture is greedy. But in many ways, that behavior is being nurtured by parts of the industry.

In the end, I think it will all settle similarly to what has happened with TV and movies. All of the companies will realize MS is moving towards taking over everything-----so other companies will make similar subscription services and/or start offering various promos for cheaper games and content. And we will still have the games which demand being purchased individually and you won't see them under a subscription service for years, if ever.

Entitlement isn't a huge problem, people with that attitude just seem to get really loud and warps your perception of reality like a lot of things on the internet. This gen is a little more complicated because these consoles are not separated from the previous ones outside of more powerful hardware. It made sense that you had to purchase a new copy of the same game if you're moving from one gen to the next, but it's not like that anymore. That old way of doing things would be like making PC gamers required to purchase a new copy of a game they already owned when upgrading their motherboard, CPU and video card.

In this new reality for consoles I absolutely do believe that you should not be charged more than once for the same game.

I have seen some other people around the internet say this---and I do not agree at all.

I'm not going to break it all down. But, development requires money. Adding new features for newer hardware, requires time and money. Back porting to older hardware, requires money. Many times, simply backporting doesn't suffice. And further customizations and optimizations are needed. Such that....its nearly a whole new version of the game. Such that, each version of the game (last next Vs. new gen) are quite different.

Its great to get stuff for free. But I don't think we necessarily should. A few games doing it, doesn't mean the whole industry must follow.

Metro Exodus enhanced edition, a whole new version of the game, requiring a lot of extra development time; was free for existing owners on PC and console. But that doesn't mean I should bark at CDPR for not giving me a free copy of The Witcher 3 on Switch.

Its all a lot more complicated than simply adding a GPU to your PC and one should feel happy enough that there are sometimes free upgrades out there, such as Metro Enhanced, which absolutely would have justified extra money.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan: “I want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)—both digital and physical—will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5,” Ryan said. “This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment”

Has anyone gone through the process of replacing their PS5 through Sony's warranty? I think my wifi internal card is bad.

KoTOR remake for PS5 (funny, because KoTOR was originally an Xbox exclusive for console. And much later, came out on PC).

I'm surprised that they didn't announce Bluepoint Games next project or show more Horizon Forbidden West footage

As long as 3 months can be considered "much later"

If this is really a PS5 exclusive then that's just greasy. I bet 99% of kotor fans don't have a ps5, and even if it was possible to get one, this would still be a dick move.

PS5 console exclusive according to Sony.

You're right. I remembered it as a year delay for the PC version.

It really depends on what "Remake" means here - ie. new engine, new visuals, but same gameplay (less likely imo) or complete revamp including modern gameplay.
