Cyan World has announced that a remake of Myst is coming to Xbox Game Pass...the game will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam/Epic Games Store/GOG) on August 26th...the PC version of the game will have full support for PC VR headsets...on Steam, the game won't require a VR headset as it can run in both standard and VR modes

There are several new and requested features for this version of Myst...for one, the game will have multiple language options and localized UI, dialogue, and subtitles...it will have many comfort level features such as enabling smooth or snap turning quick travel upstairs and ladders, and height quantization...additionally, the game will have graphical options for next generation gameplay such as Ray Tracing and super sampling...

So is this going to be the same kind of point-and-click adventure the original was, or is it updated to be more like a more modern open-world exploration type of game?

same as the original only rebuilt from the ground up using Unreal Engine with new art, sound effects, interactive elements etc...sounds like this new version was built with VR as the focal point...

Does this mean we'll get the spoof/parody game of this as well, I believe is was called Pyst!, unless my memory is failing me.

I know modern hardware and game engines have surpassed the need for the pre-rendered environments from the original games, but it would still be cool if they could do a modern game with pre-rendered assets still and maybe still work in real-time elements for water and lighting.

I never played the original games, but they always seemed interesting to me back in the day, mostly because of their graphics at the time. My best friend in high school played through Myst on his iMac (the CRT model with the colored transparent casing) at the time and talked about it with me a lot. I still talk to him daily too, so I'll send this over to him.

I'm not a gammer but I had a Mac back in the day when this was released, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. Not sure I'm really in favor of a remake though, it holds a solid place in game history, probably best to leave it at that.

I hope they tweak the puzzles, I'd hate to already know how to beat the game.

Myst remake is launching in a couple of days with DLSS support and ray-traced reflections...Myst also supports DLSS in VR Mode, which lets people play the game at 4864 x 2448 resolution while hitting 90 FPS...to hit those figures on the Oculus Quest 2, you'll need an RTX 3080 or better to run the game at Max settings...

you remember all the puzzles from 28 years ago?

I still have all my notes. Including for the puzzles that were cheap gimmicks that even Rand and Robyn Miller admitted they got lazy with.

If they're putting all this effort in, expand the worlds and fix it.

100% down for this, I remember playing this on our family Macintosh Performa 550c all in one.

Will be great to see it at 3440x1440 with raytracing.

Like hiding a doorway behind a door that you’d just opened? I think they did that twice in Riven.

Sort of going to depend on price for me.

Also, why are they spending resources doing this when they are still taking forever on Firmament?

The two that really stand out for me still are the tunnel maze with the little railcar, and the doorway that you can skip if you had fast transitions enabled.

I think I remember my dad trying to map that all out, we never quite understood the puzzle and just brute forced it.

They said in an interview in some magazine that probably no longer exists that they were crunched for time, they admitted it was lazy, but they had to finish the game. And that there wouldn't be any puzzles like that in Riven.

So that was a lie...

Don't get me wrong, I loved those games so much I bought all the books, the first one twice, because I bought the paperback and immediately got the hardback.

Yeah, we played every one as a family, the original on a Mac PowerPC my dad had gotten for work, and would pretty much buy each new one when it came out. We were so excited for Riven.

I got really into the books as well.
