(3) GTX 780 ti's to Drive (3) 2021 LG 27GP850 Monitors

Hello Everyone,

After many hours of research, I decided on a major upgrade for my desktop system. Since I cannot find a single gpu for a "normal" price, I thought I would upgrade my 3 old dell 3007 wfp monitors to 3 new 2021 LG 27GL850's each attached via Displayport. My question is will my Ti's be able to drive these 27's adequately over what I currently have and was it a good decision until I can substantially upgrade my gpu's to newer models?

SLI for a 3 monitor ultra wide setup? 3 gigs of vram is not gonna work for that while gaming unless you minimize textures and maybe employ FSR for image scaling. Please let us know how that goes if that is your intent.
 
So long as you're fine running lower resolution while gaming, like 1080p, a 780TI should do fine.

SLI is pretty much dead at this point, so your 3 cards are just about as good as one unless your game explicitly supports it.

Just to let you know each of the 780ti's has 7gb of ram so in SLi might be 10gb... it will be interesting to see what it will do. I'm still trying to shop for 1 gpu that will drive these displays. After some research I opted to get the 27GL850's instead of the new GP850 displays as amazon had the old model on sale for $373 each as opposed to $496 for the new improved model. Boost in brightness but overall speed still goes to the older model so went with those and saved around $400 bucks. Ok..haven't been on this forum in a long time so I'm getting winded... let me know what minimal gpu you would recommend if I am able to find one to buy (would rtx 2060 be enough?)

Yeah VRAM under SLI does not add up. What model of 780Ti's do you have? I seem to remember them coming in 3GB and 6GB variants.

Nothing you said about the 780 TI's vram is correct.
 
So right now you have 3 older 2560x1600 monitors and you want to switch to 3 newer 2560x1440 monitors, is that right? Whatever those cards were doing at 7680x1600, they will be able to do at 7680x1440. The only thing to keep in mind is that a 780TI will only do VRR with a monitor that has an actual GSYNC module, not a "GSYNC compatible." So it will work, but without GSYNC functionality.
 
I just can't imagine going from 30 inch 16x10 monitors down to 27 inch 16x9 monitors. Not only are you going to lose a little actual resolution you're going to lose a lot of physical size. It really takes the 32 inch 16x9 to physically match the height of a 30 inch 16x10.

Thanks and yeah, I weighed that all out. I'm going for speed and trying to put less of a burden on the cards for the new LG monitors. They are a lot faster and should make it easier. The 30's are nice but refresh is only 60 and the cards cannot drive three even one card for each monitor in SLi..getting like 14 fps in Doom if I stretch out the screen. Thought smaller faster monitors would be better. Plus the LG's are Nano IPS monitors, much faster than the Dell's and also clearer and faster refresh rate. One of the best/fastest gaming monitors in the market (Hardware Reviews / YouTube)

That's 7Gbits/sec/pin of bandwidth, not 7 gigabytes of VRAM. The card has 3GB of VRAM, and VRAM doesn't scale at all in SLI (each card keeps an entire copy of the textures and models in its memory)
I stand corrected, yes I see that now, 3,072mb....ugghh..... so basically I need to replace these cards with an updated gpu 🥲

Yeah, that's pretty much it, plus you might be running into lack of SLI support problems in addition to the likely vram shortage in some games.

3x2560x1440 is 33% more pixels than 4k, so you're basically talking 4k+ resolution. I'd just look at the 4k numbers when checking benchmarks, etc. and assume it'll be a bit slower. Which card? There isn't really a firm floor. It all depends on what you're willing to put up with as far as settings go. I'd want an RTX 3080, RX 6800XT or better (3080Ti, 3090, 6900XT), but there are plenty of people running 4k on 3060Tis, 6700XTs, etc. They just have to turn down settings or crank up DLSS or FSR if available sometimes.

You shouldn't be stuck at 60Hz. RTX 2000 series cards have HDMI 2.0, and I'd expect your laptop does too. So do the GTX 1000 and 1600 series cards, and I think the 900 series as well. HDMI 2.0 is good for 60Hz at 4k, 144Hz at 2650x1440 and 240Hz at 1080p.

Same... If I recall my experience with three 3007 WFPs using DVI-D adapters (using dual 780 tis, then 980 tis), I was technically able to push 2560x1600 across all three using HDMP to DVI-D, but they would constantly switch/click off every 30 seconds. If memory serves, there were some suggestions the issue was the cable and adapters, but I could never find a set that worked.

As for your dilemma, you're not going to play any modern i.e. post-2010 games on three 3007s with 780 ti 3GB SLI, at least not at native resolution. And for you kids who've never used SLI, remember the VRAM is not additive across both cards: it's only 3GB (because each frame is still rendered individually on a single card). The only cards with enough VRAM and rendering power that could really push those monitors without dulling down settings would be a 6900XT or 3090 (and a single card may solve the nV Surround issue).

On a side note, moving from Dell 3007s to 27GL850s is a bit of a side grade, IMO. While the 27GL850 has a faster refresh (and is much newer), the 3007 is bigger, has slightly higher resolution, and better color accuracy when calibrated due to it being a true 10-bit display (the colors on that panel that was used across most 30" monitors of the time were glorious). I've used both, and would be hard pressed to choose: the 27GL850 for gaming, the 3007 for work/productivity.

Ok so what should I do, return the LG's? Then sell my soul for a 3090 or sell the 3007's (yes DVI-D to HDMI it is the cables but its also the translation with those monitors, just isn't great, if you want to experience frustration there is the recipe for it) or should I completely pull the desktop out and use my Razer with the LG's. I could buy a brand new desktop for the price of a gpu today... been looking and its so true. Or I may give up on this all together return everything, sell my desktop and keep my Razer and M1 and use that and call it a day. To tell you the truth if Apple ever wants to take over the gaming industry with the M1, they will have no trouble whatsoever.... Apple Silicon is so superior to pc's its insane 🙄

Here's another option: return and sell those LGs AND 3007s and get a single 38" superwide ips, or a 43". Probably will be a better visual experience than three separate monitors and less resolution to push. You'll still need a high-end GPU, but at least you won't be dealing with SLI or adapter issues.

That's what I'd do for a straight gaming rig, get an extra/super/ultra-wide.

You don't need SLI to run surround, but it's a lot of pixels at 2560x1440x3 and needs a lot of GPU. If you try it at 1920x1080x3 it's less than 4k and something like a 3070 should be ok. I ran 3x2560x1440 surround for a few years on a 2x GTX680 4GB SLI setup. It was great at first, but it wasn't too long until I couldn't run new games in surround and had to drop to one screen. Then one of those cheap Auria monitors died. Kept going with just two screens (so only gaming on one) for a while.

Now I've got a 43" 4k screen and a 3090 to drive it. 3090 because that's what I managed to get in my cart and check out with last December. I had some buyer's remorse at the time for spending that much $ but now I'm glad I bought it. The big 4k is for max real estate for programming stuff, plus I don't play competitive games, mostly RPGs and strategy games, so 60Hz is fine. I also have a side screen (24" 1920x1200 in portrait mode). I'd have two if my desk was bigger, but my work laptop (thanks Covid) is hogging up the spot where a second side screen could go. If the work bit wasn't involved or I played competitive stuff and needed higher refresh I'd just get one of those superwides for gaming.

Selling the 3007s might not be a bad idea. That's an odd size that some people like and is hard to find. The extra height is nice. That depends on what you can get for them though. I haven't looked around to even get an idea, but I bet it's better than most monitors of that age. You could also use them as side screens if you use your setup for work, have a programming hobby, etc. Bonus if you can put them in portrait mode. It'll look a little funny, but trust me, you'll get used to it. I've run multiple screens since 2000 (1996 if you count that setup I had with a 486 with a VLB card plus an old monochrome card in an ISA slot...) The 3x1440p setup I built for surround was the only one that involved a matched set of monitors.

Great advice… just bought the AORUS FV43U 43" and will probably retire the 3007’s as I can port multiple computers to this one monitor and reduce the footprint in my mancave. Thanks to everyone for all your great advice, now for that gpu ugggh….

One other tip for 4k screens, especially large ones. If a game is a bit too much for your GPU, try making a custom mode, like 3840x1440, and set scaling to off so it leaves black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. If your monitor doesn't like it enable GPU scaling (under Adjust desktop size and position in the NV Control Panel, I'd assume AMD has something similar) so the output is native 4k. The idea of effectively lopping off part of your screen may make some people twitch, but it's really not bad on a 43". It basically turns it into a virtual ultrawide.

DLSS and FSR are viable at that resolution as well.

Thank you Sir, so while I am now in the club, would you connect the desktop with the 780Ti’s (SLi or No)? Or the Razer laptop (2070 MaxQ), hdmi or mini-displayport to displayport? for gaming?
 
You're going to get better performance and far fewer headaches with that 2070maxq laptop. Although 780 ti SLI has a slight edge in rendering power on paper -- and I stress "on paper" since SLI generally isn't supported in modern games-- the 2070maxq (about the performance of a GTX 1060 desktop) will have a giant advantage in VRAM, especially at higher resolutions. I have a razer advance, albeit with a 2080maxq and it performs great attached to my 4k monitor. You'll just need an external keyboard and mouse attached to the laptop if you want a desktop experience.

In summary, ditch those 780 Tis unless you want to keep one as a back up/in-between card. You should be able to use a standard mini-DP (or mini-DP to DP) cable to connect your razer to that new monitor.

The Black Rampage board is worth a lot and my processor. 900D Corsair case is huge and roomy but out of date as well (weighs a ton lol) and Ram is DDR3…so not sure what to do with this thing. As you also know it puts out enough heat to warm a family of five in Siberia. I would save a lot of space if I just used the Razer. So I will do that but give me some ideas on what to do with my desktop. IF I did manage a new gpu, would it work in it, be killer or no?

Yes, I'd part out that CPU, RAM and motherboard -- these are the components that you'd want to replace if you are building a new system. They will be a bottleneck, even running at 4k/high IQ and a new GPU would be wasted.

Maybe hold onto that SDD and PSU for when you are ready to build a new desktop. I'd also considering holding on to that case: the 900D is a beast, still not many cases better than that one, but understood if you want to free up space.

Thanks to Everyone for helping me through this techno dilemma .... My mancave is on its way to being a nice successful hangout, ordered the new carpet and new black glass desk, will get an an audio setup later once the room is completed. 👍

Only 4 of the last 10 3007's listed on ebay sold. $70, $350, $150, and $90 with the cheapest two not including stands. The unsold ones were $300, $75, $100, $100, $100, and $100 (the $100's consisted of 2 people each failing to sell twice in a row before giving up). DVI only is a big drag on their value at this point and 4/10 (stopping with the last sold one since ebay lists sales for a lot longer than fails) was much better odds than what I'd seen the few times I'd looked at what similar monitors were selling for in the past.

My same generation NEC 3090 has been demoted to KVM duty at 1680x1050 over HDMI. (Windows won't offer anything higher by default for some reason, and forcing 1920x1200 is both a pain and fails to survive a reboot.) At some point it will probably be replaced with a cheap 1080p and hauled off to be junked. I'm not interested in keeping it for another 10-20 years in the hope that the retro pc crowd will want it.
 
lol..wow. Well, my 3 3007’s one with HDMI are in my closet sitting comfortably with 2560x1600 capability with DVI-D cables. Stands are cheap, in fact, packed away two and using one for my 43 that should be here Monday. I don’t care what anyone says, as harmattan stated the color accuracy is glorious which I can attest. They are sick killer monitors, just heavy and need DVI. I have cards that go with that and can be put into a small case to drive a nice computer for small biz, graphics or what not… people selling them need to do a little more to sell em. Thats what sucks about selling older tech, you must put more time and effort into selling because if you don’t you may not even sell it and have to junk it.
The DVI only thing didn't even cross my mind. I was just thinking Dell 30" 2560x1600. I've seen those in action, and they're lovely.

I bet they'd be easier to sell on Craigslist or via local classified ads. If it's a $100 screen at this point shipping turns it into a $140 screen or something like that. If you sell locally you can demo them.

You've got a bunch of parts that would be interesting to the right buyer. The most entertaining is your mainboard. There are tons of new Chinese made X79 mainboards on eBay. It's all because of used Xeons pulled from corporate servers. Very few people want a 1U or 2U rackmount with screaming fans and a proprietary board in their house, so they part them out and we end up with piles of cheap ram & CPUs on eBay. The Chinese boards are entertaining. They start around $70, go as small as ITX, and I've even seen some with a PCI-e M.2 slot. Funny thing is they don't list your proc as supported. Just Xeons, and often just the lower end ones. A lot of them probably don't have the VRMs to deal with a 150W E5-2687Wv2. OTOH you can get board, lower end Xeon, and 4x4GB registered ECC ram for <$150 and a cheap old 4-8 core low-midrange Xeon E5 will handle web/office/YouTube/etc. easily. As best I can tell used name-brand boards go for quite a bit more than the shiny new no-name Chinese stuff, and your board can run a Xeon v2. If you sell it there's a good chance the buyer stuffs some assorted recycled server parts (NICs, disk controllers, etc.) in the PCI-e slots and has some fun with it that has nothing to do with gaming. On the down side your chip isn't worth nearly as much as your board.
 
The DVI only thing didn't even cross my mind. I was just thinking Dell 30" 2560x1600. I've seen those in action, and they're lovely.

I bet they'd be easier to sell on Craigslist or via local classified ads. If it's a $100 screen at this point shipping turns it into a $140 screen or something like that. If you sell locally you can demo them.

Thanks zandor, I will probably sell locally or even take the parts out back and use my Beretta PX4 Storm on them for some fun target practice lol.... Yes, that mobo has high end capacitors and most of the parts are over engineered to last and last and believe it or not, it actually is the second brand new one I put in that system. Don't ask why lol. So it is fairly new for the years I've had the system. The biggest issue I have with this desktop is the massive amount of heat it puts out. If it was not for that I would just leave it in my man cave and call it a day. However, its too damn hot, big and heavy. Now as far as quality goes, I have to say if you look up my chip and try to buy it, it is still over $1000. Same thing with this board if you want them new. It's because of the quality and performance. The monitors are quality too, triple monitor setup with this system at 7680 is pretty nice for anyone doing photoshop or video editing. It's just a big hot and heavy system. We have 2 houses, so I just may take this big thing down to the other home and store it and perhaps part everything out or perhaps sell it as an entire system to the right person.
