This Robot Does All the Cooking For You

Are people really getting so lazy they need a robot to cook for them now?

I'm all for the joy of cooking. I also have a 4 year old and a 6 month old at home. I work 12 hour continental shifts with a 1 hr commute each way. My wife's basically a single parent while I'm not around.

There's a good market for this and it's not just laziness.

You folks think too small, this robot is the first robot in a kitchen that can serve 2500 people a day.

This is the giga-McRobot beta 0.1 and it's just another step on the way to automating every menial job on earth.

Ah yes. It'll give people even more time to be plastered to their "smart devices".

I really have a lot of thoughts on this, so I'll try to maintain.

For the family - I really feel there is massive value in <parent> making a meal for their kids, most of the time.

This is what parents do. Sure, sometimes we do something else (dining out, doordash, etc) - but I cannot think of anything more "parent" than providing sustenance for our children. Starts with Teh Boob, and goes to grilled salmon. Either way - I'm the parent, and I'm doing this.

Don't be afraid of burning a calorie to nourish your family. Be afraid that you never did.

yes. its been genetically programmed. We want good shit, but also want to do as little as possible to get said shit.

also, its want, not need. No one needs this. Lots want it.

I'd love to be able to say, hey robot bitch, make me a sandwich, you know how I like it.

This way I can spend more time in the garage, pretending I'm good at maintaining my shitty old vehicles, and occasionally drinking beer.

Is that like the ten years we've been away from commercial nuclear fusion for the last 30 years? :)

I think it's more like 40+ now. They need to hurry up with that...power problem solved overnight, and the robochef can go all Energizer Bunny with the spatulas and skillets.

if you never tasted his food how can you say his food is the best. taste is a preference.

It's not all that hard to find one of his joints, plus, if you know even a little bit about cooking or the industry, it's not some kind of special effects. He's extremely good.

I prefer deep fried in butter.... Does he do that?

While you can deep-fry butter, it's not possible to deep-fry in butter.

Although if anyone figures out how to, he probably knows them.

This is not true.

Oh........ it is a trick question.... I thought wait a minute butter smoke point is so low.......

Clarified butter is the answer here ?

On a semi-related note, I'm surprised the home electronics giants like Samsung, LG and Xiaomi haven't invented a smart fridge that basically lets you inventory what's in your fridge. Seems ripe.

Butter burns before it hits frying temps. You can only poach or boil in butter.

Correct.

I'm not reporting to electronic kitchen management. There goes but Skynet.

Shit, I guess I defy phsyics all the time then.

Nah, you're just cooking stuff in burned butter.

Don't let the robots know there's a difference; we may need this in case one of them comes back from the future and pretends to be the line cook with a foster kid with an important future ahead.

if you burn it, your doing it wrong. The robots must know.

It won't go above boiling temperature as butter. Are you on the robots' side?

Am I giving the robots intel?

Or maybe you just use the expression deep fry in a different way than other people or deep fried something unusual with it ?, butter non clarified can reach around 300F, deep frying is usually at least in the 350-375F+

You can fry-cook in hot butter obviously, but deep fry (process in which the water inside the aliment is expulsed fast and with high pressure so the oil enter not that much inside the food) ?.

i'll accept this as fact.

Speaking of Gordon Ramsay, every time I watch one of his vids I end up 50/50 on whether he's on meth/speed/crack or he's just super excited and passionate. Dude is Energizer Bunny 4.0.

Better yet, can I just get a pill to replace all that?
No pills yet, but there is powder you can get and mix with water that will sustain you.

This is the one I use to replace one meal a day: https://huel.com/

Takes about 30 seconds to mix, it's cheap (compared to a real meal), and has all the nutrients you need.

I did 1 month of basically only drinking that, lost 10 pounds, and I felt pretty good. But it doesn't taste that great, so it's pretty hard to do that long term.

Soylent was all the rage for a while, but then kinda fizzled out. And why would you even consider that?

I for one can't wait until 3D-printed meals or automated cooking become a thing. The restaurant experience, but at home sounds kinda nice, not gonna lie.

Well I don't like cooking, and ordering delivery every night was getting *really* expensive.

The powder was a healthier, cheaper, and easier option. Still drink it for lunch but I'll have normal food for dinner. Works out okay for me.

sure but not everyone is going to like his food, taste is once again a preference, hes mostly famous for his drama not his food. many chefs are as good or maybe better but hes more famous because of all the screaming and swear words he says on his shows.

It's called Huel. I linked it above. It's a nutritionally complete meal in powder form.

You just mix with water, I add Splenda and it sort of tastes like a milkshake. You could use it to lose weight, or if you just want to save time and not cook.

While everyone has their likes and dislikes, this is not true. Many companies and individuals have figured out what flavors and techniques make people come back for more, and the reason why they're successful is because they're taking advantage of biology. We're hard-wired to like certain things, and its all rooted in survival. And companies spend billions on tweaking what works in order to make people try it all over again.

I've yet to find a bag of chips I won't eat, even if I don't really like them.

There are some conditions that make us reject certain foods, textures, and flavors, and usually they're tied with foods that make us sick. Some of that's innate, some of that's experience. But those are edge cases. The stuff that works, we all like, because we're built to like them.

hes mostly famous for his drama not his food

He's a chef first. Started out in scullery, he's as legit as they come.

For $350,000 you can afford to pay someone to cook for you at home for quite some time.

Yup there's no denying that. At least for now. As the technology gets cheaper, as any new tech always does, it's going to reach a point where the robot is cheaper. Once the price comes down to say $100k it'll be a good investment. Even if you replace it in 5 years, I don't know many cooks that would make your meals for $20k a year.

Might be a hard sell, but even at $350k it would be worth it to a restaurant if they could market that. I think that would be a tough one though. Most of us would probably have a human make our food. At least for now.

The slowest restaurant that only sells soup and steak and doesn't clean. Real restaurant automation is way more expensive, and better-tasked.

This is never going to gain traction. People who don't cook aren't going to bother supplying or taking care of a cooking robot. It's the same thing as the impulse-bought NutriChef or Instant Pot that's just getting dusty in the corner.

It's not fun when:
  • You're shit at it.
  • Nobody's there to teach you since it's lockdown.
  • You've never really cooked seriously so your pantry is barren.
  • Almost all the YouTube recipes online list crazy/weird ingredients you don't know how to substitute, thus you gotta purchase.
At some point most people would just say fuck it and order take out. :(

I agree cooking is fun, but not when you've never done it seriously before.
Add more salt than you think you will ever need. Add it halfway through the cooking process.
Congratulations you have suddenly learned the secret to flavor.

Seriously food isn't a complex thing. I see kids being afraid of cooking all the time but there is a major misconception about needing to be taught to be good. PRACTICE is teaching.
Also, let me tell you a secret... everyone sucks at cooking at first. Everyone. Even bobby flay sucked once. Just like all skills, it's a time and how comfortable you are about risks thing.

About the robot? If it was standard installation it's a great idea for folk who just don't have time to do things. There are days I wish I had a mister handy. Got serious fallout vibes because its basically the autochef arms from the fallout universe.

If its any motivation, a guy that cooks is a huge plus for getting laid on the first date.

I don't care about getting laid on a first date, but I would definitely cook to impress said date.

I would love a cooking robot. I do enjoy cooking, but sometimes I just heat up a frozen pizza or get food delivered. Sometimes, I just need to veg after work and don't have the energy to cook. If that's lazy, so be it. lol

Oh, it does. And you can use it as sort of a test. If you want to have, say, stir fry. Have the chicken and rice on hand, but have her bring over some veggies to go with it. If she's all like, you expect me to supply dinner? then you have a little insight on her. If she brings veggies and drinks, if you play your cards right, you'll probably get dessert too.
