New Samsung Odyssey G9 with MiniLED announced

I hope that Samsung has improved the startup and resolution switching time on this because that's pretty slow on the CRG9 at least. You can get past your BIOS way before the screen shows an image.

Some tips for those just coming into super ultrawides:
  • Displayfusion and MS Powertoys Fancyzones are your friends on the desktop. Displayfusion can set up things like a center taskbar, multiple taskbars etc in case you want something like that. It's regularly on sale on Steam. Fancyzones is easier to use for splitting the screen into regions for easily snapping things into them.
  • Fullscreen functionality will be the bane of your usage. YouTube, games, anything that goes fullscreen usually does so in a way that wastes most of your desktop space unless the content runs at super ultrawide res. It's better to go windowed in many cases.
  • Expect to see wide aspect ratio content with black bars because content creators did not upload it in actual widescreen format but with black bars baked in.
  • Add custom resolutions. 3840x1440 and 3440x1440 are useful ones for reducing FOV distortion issues and giving some extra performance. With mini-LED it probably looks better too since the black bars on sides will be black. You might need to use GPU scaling for this to work.
  • 100% scaling with 110% font sizes in apps that support scaling text was my preferred setup with the CRG9.
  • If you want to mount it, get an Ergotron HX with the extra heavy duty mount meant for the G9. Nothing else will be guaranteed to hold it up properly except maybe wall mounts.
  • Unless Samsung has fixed it on the G9 series, the sharpness control will be weird. On the CRG9 sharpness at 56% was the "no sharpening setting".

Way too many people in this thread giving in. That's 3-4 people so far.
Did you see retro cave on youtubes latest vid, he compares this model to alot of other type of displays including Oled 2020 model, and this one holds up very damm well in terms of black levels.

Interesting he put CX48 at top of the list, do you rekon that was just for black levels?

Per pixel dimming and unbeatable response times maybe. But this Samsung is a really damn close 2nd though.

EDIT: Just watched the video and I see he was just referring to black levels only so yeah that's why the OLED comes in first.

I don't believe/trust anything said on reddit ever. Most users can't tell their ass apart from a monitor.

He's also running a not-really-beta release of windows, among other things.

I mean to be fair he also tried his PS5 and posted a video. Just gotta give the guy some credit, he seems like he's being honest.

His testing on a PS5 gave the same results, I suspect a firmware issue that can be resolved.

My Samsung Q9FN HDR2000 TV had terrible issues with HDR when I first got it that it almost went back.
(HDR would suddenly go dark and from that moment on, the only way to get the brightness up again was to also enable HDR+ [fake HDR] but HDR was not the real version)
Samsung eventually connected to it over the internet and fixed it (wow is it hard to get anyone to help without a book of phrases).
They lied that they didnt do anything but it was working fine immediately after.
Then I managed to break it again and shortly after a new firmware was released, this fixed it properly and has remained stable since.

Whats needed is to report the issue, go through a few hours of meaningless troubleshooting with amateur techs before being put through to real tech support.
Let them collect required data and see if it can be fixed before the return window expires.
Or just get a replacement.

We do not get a return window in Australia, once we open electronic goods from their package, we cannot return them at all unless they are faulty. Which I guess in the case discussed here, could be considered faulty if HDR is not working properly.

I mean there are numerous other people who aren't reviewers that got theirs early without any HDR issues.

Guy needs to RMA and move on. His post regarding his single sample reads like it's gospel and all 500 review samples and privately owned units in the wild are some how an exception.

Read again, he acknowledges it could be a problem unit.
His frustration is understandable, he wants to see it look as good as the reports he read and is looking for reasons why it is happening with hope he can find a fix.

Definitely a faulty unit because there's no way in hell enabling local dimming makes HDR worst. In fact the local dimming running Windows 11 HDR enabled is really damn good. It's not perfect, but still impressive.

Yep.
And always buy with a credit card for extra protection (assuming you get the same in Oz).

That looks really impressive but I'm not going into this expecting 0 bloom. I know it will bloom, if it's even half as much as my PG32UQX I'll be happy.

Overall it looks like a very impressive effort even if that 2000 nits brightness was unsurprisingly marketing bullshit. I hope they tweak the HDR performance with firmware updates a bit. This looks like actually roughly matching the DisplayHDR1000 spec in practice regardless of window size.

I will see where this ends up over time and when I will be looking for a replacement for my LG CX 48" I will definitely consider this one or whatever other form factors they might pack this tech into. I would love to see either a 49" 32:10 5120x1600, 38" 3840x1600 ultrawide, 40" 5120x2160 "4K ultrawide" or just 32" 3840x2160 model.

Very impressive results even if the sustained brightness isn't as high as it should be.

Definitely won't cancel my order.
So excited.

Disappointing for sure but the monitor can still deliver a great HDR experience.

I'm not sure why they're so hung up on sustained HDR brightness. All TV's roll off after a certain period (seconds or minutes). Nobody is pausing their game to enjoy a explosion for 2 minutes.

Samsung and screwing with EOTF go hand in hand though. I am pretty sure they'll never change it because the same behavior occurs on their TV lineup. "Dynamic Mode" is what's considered Bestbuy showroom floor mode.

EDIT: I'm not sure if I'll keep my preorder. I didn't buy this to get HDR brightness lower than a 3 year old PG27UQ/X27.

I watched the HUB video. He says this monitor does not follow the EOTF curve properly and dims the picture significantly. When the scene is calling for 400 nits the monitor is only giving 250 nits. The monitor itself is clearly capable of delivering 2000 nits brightness so Samsung can easily fix this with a firmware update. For now though anyone who buys this monitor will actually be getting a dimmer HDR experience than even OLED up to 700 nits on the EOTF curve where OLED clips off.

Yeah it's HDR performance is really not impressive compared to what's already available. Like I said, I don't think it's something that will change since it's a image quality choice on Samsung's part to prevent blooming which makes sense considering how much monitor noobs cry about bloom when first experiencing FALD.

I wish they'd let the backlight loose but it would just be another PG32UQX bloomfest.

Interesting. It appears Samsung have taken the approach of using a VA panel combined with minimizing HDR brightness to prevent blooming.

It doesn't break 1000 nits in HDR under most circumstances, and the color volume is WAY below my PG32. That's some large trade-offs to go all the way down to tiny 1440p.

Not sure if I'm going to purchase with the hope of a firmware to fix the problems. May cancel pre-order.

So u guys saying this won't even get as bright as an OLED or similar when in hdr standard?

So the HDR experience won't be any better?

What do I do, cancel my order?
I already have a CX48, or will the super ultrawide give me that bit more immersion that would make it worth it?

Nope it will not be any better, at least not in it's current tune.

OLED's track the EOTF much more accurately so the picture would actually be brighter on OLED than this Samsung until you reach the very top end.

Yeah if HDR is a priority this will still offer a pretty awesome experience for most as is. It's just there is so much potential gone to waste currently.

I'm on the fence about cancelling. I could just wait it out and see it for myself and ditch it if I don't like it because I'm not holding my breath for Samsung to do anything about this.

I've also looked around at alternatives with more vertical real estate and the pricing is mind boggling. The 38" 3840x1600 displays are going for $1500-1600+. They have no real form of local dimming and are just regular low contrast IPS panels.

Didn't Samsung fix the flickering on the old G9? I guess if enough people complain about this then they might do something about it. Otherwise if everyone expresses nothing but amazement then they will definitely not be doing any further tweaks.

Yeah I think they added some OSD option that fixed some form of desktop flicker but it's still plagued with other issues that have never been resolved like scanlines. It's received like 10+ firmware updates so that's at least good.

That's what I mean though, 99% of users wouldn't even notice TBH so I doubt it being a priority for Samsung.

I might just keep my order to see if I like the super ultra wide aspect better than a 48" 16:9. If not i'll try sell it at a few 100 dollars less.

I use to have the LG 38GL950G for a while, very nice monitor in most regards except absolutely worthless for HDR. So if HDR is a must, don't bother with that one. I doubt the alienware 38" version with HDR600 would be much better.

Yeah I decided to hang onto my preorder and see it for myself. Although HDR brightness in the standard mode is kind of underwhelming at the moment compared to stuff I've owned like the PG32UQX, it's not the only factor when assessing a display. It's overall picture quality thanks to Samsungs far superior FALD algorithm will still provide awesome image quality all around.

Pre-Order....cancelled.

I've decided to stick with the Varjo VR3...that is plenty of expensive toy for me..well that and the PG32/27s haha

Please tell me how does the PG dismantles the CX? Vibrancy, color, blacks, motion, or any other characterisitic of it? The only way I can imagine the PG killing the CX is by it's brightness, maybe that's all that is needed? I don't know, so very keen to hear your reasoning why it kills the CX in HDR gaming?

I was very keen on the PG until I heard of its slow arse response times.
AFAIK: PG have the capability of showing way more colors, brightness and color intensity/volume.

Check this out. AW2721D edge lit HDR600. Not even close to PG32UQX. If the scene doesn't favour CX's black capability, this monitor probably look better.

Yeah pretty sure PG32UQX is up there in the top 3 of widest color gamut consumer monitors.

What content out there even uses such a wide color gamut? I once tried to play games on my Acer X27 with the sRGB clamp disabled and everything looked ridiculously oversaturated and unpleasing. Curious to know what kinda content/game would actually benefit from having 80+% Rec.2020

Anything HDR, be it games, movies ...

Ah for HDR sure more nits and color volume is better. I should clarify that I turned the SDR sRGB colors clamp off while playing an SDR game and then that's when everything looked oversaturated.

Another unpromising report from a guy in Australia, recieved his unit yestersay and has said that he also experiences washed out HDR when local dimming is enabled, but looks vibrant with it disabled, but then it is essentially the old g9 with it disabled.

He said SDR looks good with dimming enabled too, but can't get HDR to look good when local dimming is enabled.

I've experienced the "washed out" when enabling HDR thing on a bunch of edge lit or globally lit monitors in the past which is what this sounds like.

I just think it's odd that some units are experiencing it while others don't.
