3dfx Making a Comeback?

Curious what the "big announcement" is. Account isn't verified and the image in the post is apparently from DeviantArt which is suspect. AFAIK, Nvidia got the 3dfx trademarks in the buyout- 3dfx.com still redirects to nvidia.com/geforce <hmm> Who is this Twitter account, what's their game?

I'm intrigued, though it doesn't look like anyone owns the trademark. https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4803:gtovau.2.7

Would be interesting if like imagination technologies randomly had it snatched up and were going to try to drop some of their IMG B-Series GPU on something.

Thinking more of nothingness at the moment though, or maybe someone coming out with new merch.

I’m thinking they take one of their later gen GPU’s they just put all 8 chips on a single dye, even at 22nm it would still be tiny. They package that on some SBC with a lower end Intel and they put it in some console with a bunch of the titles that were released with the Voodoo acceleration or the 3DFx Glide support.
Then put that all in some sort of kick starter to see what sort of interest they drum up. I can’t imagine that have a plethora of relevant IP that would allow them to put out a competitive card in this market and even if they did they don’t have anybody to make it.

Why would they go through that headache? Glide wrappers have existed for almost as long as 3dfx has, and exceed the performance of even the best 3dfx cards. A modestly powerful GPU today with a Glide wrapper will run basically every Glide title, bar the DOS era games, but those are comparatively few.

Gotta be fake. The grammar is terribad.

Yeah, I was having a good laugh. They can't even do basic arithmetic. This gem right here had me going LOL:

The graphics card, designed by modder, Anthony, utilizes a custom PCB design with five VSA-100 GPUs, each with 8 MB (166 MHz) SDRAM for a total of 32 Megabytes of memory

Five VSA100s? times 8 MB each is 40 MB, not 32, and even if they said four, it was still wrong. The original Voodoo5 6000 had four VSA100s with 32 MB each, for 128 MB of total card memory, which is exactly what the replica card has.

Those guys were smoking crack or something when they wrote that article.

WCCF is always like that and should always be taken with a grain of salt. Sure they've reported many many rumors that did end up being correct but only because they report on everything that comes across their desk regardless of plausibility and happen to get lucky sometimes. Signal to noise ratio on that site is not great and this sounds like noise to me.

The twitter account made a grammar mistake as well, on the only post they have made lol

or... fling enough shit and something will stick.

id like to know what this is. first real system we had was a voodoo based voodoo system. hits in the member berries.

Bit Boyz featuring patented Three Defects technology pushing billions and billions of pixels at your face. Batteries not included. :-D

A major announcement next week. We will see. Don't recommend holding one's breath.

Well, they did make a new Commodore64, and Atari released a game console, so it is possible.

Just not very likely to happen, and 3DFX is pretty obscure unless you were around for PC gaming during a specific time.

Would now be the best, or the worst time for a GFX company return/start-up? Supply is non-existent, but demand is sky high. If AMD and nVidia can't get enough units in customers hands, how is a new player expected to compete for the parts from suppliers?

Unless this is just a nVidia offshoot of sorts (like 3dfx would be their "Ti" line, or the opposite - 3dfx would be the low-end GPUs since nVidia and AMD stopped making low end so the market gap is there to squeeze right now). If they even do own the 3dfx trademark.. not sure if they own it, or just the SLI tech.

Most likely a prank.

I don't see this ever happening, unless it is Nvidia relaunching a 3DFX brand for some reason.

A new (or old) entrant into the GPU market is extremely unlikely at this point. There are way too many barriers to entry.

Maybe it's that Russian guy who makes custom cards out of old VSA100 chips.

Those old cards are pretty much just for nostalgia, a Geforce2mx was faster, and would be a better choice if it was a "retro pc" thing, since those had better and more recent drivers. Although I don't know if that old of nVidia stuff had linux support (proabably).

Now if its something real and new that isn't VSA100, would be nice to have a 3rd player. And think about it, there's good money to be made too.

Would be cool if Nvidia made it like a budget brand with $200 video cards. That would be fun.

Proof of post #32 photofake:
C46 appears twice at the far right edge.
R43+R46 appear at least three times.
C5242 is an NPN audio transistor.
FakeStarz silkscreen at the bottom edge.

Of course it's fake. I think it was an April fools making fun of the old cards 3dfx use to make. Do you really think the author was hoping others thought it was real?
