NVIDIA Ada Lovelace to supposedly power the next Nintendo Switch

Hey man, $100 more than NVIDIA Shield TV for half the DOCKED performance = GOOD VALUE! It was exactly the same price as a LAUNCH Wii-U (while being only 20% faster)

No, the only reason the Switch was a success is because it was the only way to play BOTW.

See here:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidt...-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild/?sh=7c45d9ef1c00

And here, ONE FUCKING YEAR AFTER LAUNCH

https://www.reddit.com/r/Breath_of_...breath_of_the_wild_worth_buying_a_switch_for/

The first really impressive not-a-Wii-U-port for Switch was Animal Crossing IN FUCKING 2020!

That's how many Switch sales carried by one game! And Nintendo True Fans (TM) are already used to getting raped for titles they have already been waiting years for release (it wasn't even a bundled title - you had to pay extra for the only game you would EVER BUY for your switch).

tell us how you really feel lol

I don't know what BOTW is but I'll take your word for it, this is so far outside of my area of familiarity.

I'm not really familiar with the Nvidia shield TV.

I thought the Shields were streaming media players. I didn't realize they played games at all.

What can it even play? Android games from the Google Play store?

Hey man, a Bunch of AAA game ports paid for by Nvidia. Here is one:

And it also plays any other mobile game, or any emulator in the Play Store.

The Switch running at half the speed meant that it was a much worse value for console ports (and, the fact that it was building a platform for the next SIX YEAS made it even less impressive).

I think the switch is a good console, Pretty much everyone I know has one in addition to their other gaming platform of choice. Most are PC/Switch users , the rest really PS/Switch with PC on the side. I think the combo of Uber - PC + Switch is the best way to do things personally, and I have no interest in the other consoles.

It's probably underpowered, but who cares? It does what it needs to do, it doesn't need insane horsepower, particularly since it wants to , you know, have a battery life.

Interesting.

I had no idea. I had never heard of games on the shield platform before. I thought of it as just a media streaming device like a Roku or something.

I can't seem to find a list of what titles are available in the shield store anywhere. Have you seen one?

With AMD Jaguar/Zen chips powering Sony and Xbox now for the last 2 generation of consoles, and now powering the Steam Deck, I hope this does kick Nvidia in the ass to deliver something cool for Nintendo. I personally don't care about 4k output on a "Switch Pro", but it would be nice to be able to run current games at better performance.

For people dogging the switch.

People can spend money on what they want so I completely understand the people who think the Switch is not worth their money, but our house hold actually owns 4 Switches (3 normal, 1 lite) and we've been happy with them. Compared to gaming pc's the switch is pretty reasonably priced and it does allow more than just Wii or Wii U remakes. I've had a blast with BOTW like mentioned, but also things like Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing, Astral Chain, Monster Hunter Rise. Hell the one summer week my child was able to spend doing 150cc races in Mario Kart against her three cousins with laughter through the grandparents house made me realize how sweet that crappy powered console is. The switch has also been great to play games like Hollow Knight and other simple indie type games. Overall for my family it's been a great addition to the other devices and consoles at our house.

Sometimes the switch does sit on the shelf, same as our ps5 and even gaming pc's do right now, but if I had to guess there has easily been over 1500~2000 hours used just by me on one of the Switches in the last 3 years.

It is interesting how different our experiences are.

I understand I might be in a bubble, but I wonder what my bubble is based on. Age? Location? The fact that I don't have young kids? Something else?

I have literally never seen a Switch. With consoles like PS, PS2, PS3 or Xbox and Xbox 360 and even the Wii I have at least occasionally seen them in people's homes, but I have never come across a Switch in the wild.

(I even owned a PS3 briefly in the mid to late oughts because it was the best blu-ray player on the market. Never owned nor played any game on it though.)

I pretty much agree 100% with you here. Have a decent size group of friends on Twitch and we use a plethora of ecosystems and it's a lot of Sony + A Switch, Xbox + A Switch, or Pc + A Switch. I would say about 30% of the group of 100'ish twitch friends have one along with their other devices, so I'm the opposite of the people above who have said "I don't know anyone who cares or has a Switch". Completely understand why they have that point of view, it really is subjective to their social circles, but among my friends and family there's actually more Switches than other mainstream devices.

You're an adult. Like I said, these are only marketed towards kids.

Interesting, we've probably been seeing different ads. But since the start, Nintendo's release videos and even current videos show not just kids but young adults as their target audience.

Example: Switch Launch Advertisment

Example 2 - 2021 Switch OLED advertisement

Both of these show people of all ages, but mostly young adults playing the Switch.

I'm in my mid 30's, and most of my Circle of friends/coworkers range from later 20's to early 40's. I'd say around 60-70% (including me) don't have kids, and the majority are in the tech industry or have had computers/gaming as hobbies most their life. I certainly see them around the office (well, did, in the past) often enough too.

Sure location could be part of it, or I'm just surrounded by a bunch of geeks that enjoy all types of technology with extra cash because they don't have kids.

That's been Nintendo's ace in the hole, I'd say. You may have a gaming PC, a PS5, or an Xbox, but there's also a real chance you also have a Switch... whether it's the kids' system, a handheld for gaming in bed, or just a secondary machine to play Nintendo exclusives. Because you can use it either as a portable system or a TV console, it can fit into your life more easily than... well, most previous Nintendo devices, really.

One could even ask why we are discussing anything but PC Hardware & Overclocking on a PC Hardware & Overclocking forum? :p

It's almost as if you fail to recognize that this forum has sub forums one of which has console gaming in it. However, this just happens to be in tech news because surprise it's tech news.

Nvidia isn't the issue, Nintendo is. I think perhaps because people like the Switch they forget that Nintendo hasn't changed. This is the same Nintendo that made the Wii and the Wii U. They like cheap, lower powered, hardware. They want to sell their systems at a low price and they want to make plenty of money doing it. They aren't going to upgrade the switch when it is doing well, that just isn't their style. The issue with any Switch update isn't Nvidia being unable to deliver new tech, it is Nintendo not being interested.

Which is why Nvidia is taking the old options off the table. I'm sure they'll give Nintendo a decent enough price on Lovelace since they're going to sell it in huge numbers.

You're an adult. Like I said, these are only marketed towards kids.

I suspected as much, and suggested this early in the thread, but I got a good amount of pushback on that.

My thought process is that as an adult I have so much going on, that little lightweight games just don't do it for me. They bore me to tears.

It takes a big triple-A title with an enveloping story to ever get me to play more than 5 minutes. I've seen modern lightweight games like Among Us, or Super Meat boy and things of the like, which I probably would have enjoyed as a kid when I had enough time on my hands that I was bored, but as an adult I haven't had enough time to be bored in a good 20+ years, which means my gaming competes with other activities for my time, which means that it has to be absolutely enveloping and engrossing or I just don't play it.

Which leads me to the shield...

Here's the ones I have for whoever asked what games are on the SHIELD TV. Thank you for that.

It is pretty much what I expected I guess. A mix of lightweight platform titles and a few 10-20 year old PC titles.

To each their own, but personally I don't see anything on that list I would even be interested in trying to play, except for the titles I already played 15+ years ago, and who has the time to replay a game when you already know how it ends?

Give me big heavy single player AAA games (that I haven't already played), and I'm there in an instant.
You know, stuff like:
- Far Cry Series (at least 2+, the first one was trash)
- Fallout Series
- Deus Ex Series
- Metro Series
- Dishonored Series
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R Series
- Bioshock series

Or one hit wonders like:
- The Outer Worlds,
- Prey (2017)
- Singularity

etc. etc.

You know, something you can block out the world for a bit with and be enveloped by the story.

Half life was good, and it was nice to see it on the list, but the last installment literally came out 15 years ago now.

That is literally the only type of game I have made time for in a good decade. Well, except maybe Sid Meier's Civilization and its sequels which always has staying power.

Yep agreed, I guess my more than wishful thought process was that Jensen would want to stick it to Lisa enough to offer Nintendo a lucrative deal they are willing to make it Cheap. Obviously that's not gonna happen, but it just would be cool to see. Nintendo has always thrived on just good enough low powered hardware, but a great suite of 1st party applications since the Gameboy.

Gotta give them credit though. Sometimes cutting edge is expensive and ineffecient. I still remember my friends trying to justify their 1 1/2 battery life on their Sega Nomads and Game Gear while I spent 10 hours at least playing Metroid 2 or Final Fantasy Legend on a single set of 4 double A's.

Well, I think it is based on the content. Ads targeting kids and teens always feature older kids than the target audience, because kids always want to be seen as older and are drawn towards things older kids like.

The switch content - however - all seems targeted towards children. Zelda? Animal Crossing? How can these things even keep an adult brain entertained?

Yeah I only have them because when I was on Android for years I got free Google Play money from Google that expires and 'you have to buy something if you don't want it to expire worthless' - so if there was never an app I needed I bought a SHIELD game

Outside of the PSX emulator everything else on there gets played over Gamestream from the PC, I need my PC graphics 👌

It can't. But idiot parents keep happily handing Nintendo gobs of money reburying 3rd-party Steam ports, so they can extract themselves ,momentarily from hell.

Quite frankly Zarathustra, a LOT of adults play those exact two titles you mentioned. Even now on twitch (Which isn't the end all be all metric) there are several adult streamers playing either games to thousand of viewers. Animal Crossing itself was a huge hit because of the pandemic, and actually had a really huge for adults when it came out 15 months ago. I think it was Elijah Woods on twitter and even Hardocp's absolutely Favorite AOC (sarcasm btw) that invited people to come play with them.

I have no doubt about your lack of experience of the Switch, and can understand why you might think it's not meant for you, but from my personal experience both using the device (BOTW is one of the greatest experiences in gaming I've had in 35 years of playing games) and in the social circle I'm in....I can tell you it's not just for kids and it's extremely plentiful out there. In fact it's $25 billion in sales plentiful.

Hey, those idiot parents are also the ones paying $900 to a scalper cause little Johnny wants either a PS5 or a Geforce 1660ti to play COD or Fortnight with their other 12 year old friends.

I wouldn't call them idiots. I have plenty of fond memories of playing the NES when I was a kid in the 80's. I just am not very entertained by that style of game as an adult.

Games, television, music, all forms of entertainment have kid versions for a reason, because what they find entertaining (and what is suitable for their development) is very different than what suits the interest of an adult. They serve their purpose.

But if you are unironically listening to Kidz Bop or watching Dora the Explorer as an adult, and its not for the benefit of your kids, well, I don't know what to say...

I think it's the thousands of viewers that drive streaming content, not the games inspiring content generation.

I do think you are on to something there.

Most successful streamers seem driven by the business angle above actually enjoying the games they play.

So what if your audience is all under 12 if they are watching your stream. While I may not have time for kids games in my life, I'd play them professionally too if I thought I could make a $100k per year youtube channel out of it...

It may not be my perfect source of entertainment, but it sure as hell beats dealing with FDA regulations in product development all day...

Why not watch some of the streams to see who the streamer is trying to cater too?

The point Ax brought up I believe is probably valid with a small amount of streamers, but some of those streamers with 1 or 2 viewers wouldn't be aiming for an audience of kids in my opinion. It's mostly young adults, and young professionals that actually count towards making any earnings on gaming streaming platforms. Those people with the low amount of viewers are probably playing it cause they enjoy it. The cool thing is it doesn't take long to actually watch a stream and even just ask the person why they are playing that current game. You could actually answer some of your curiosity about if the content is aimed just for kids by watching the gameplay, and also a direct line to the target market itself with a couple of questions. Personally during my stream, I love when a stranger ask me why I'm playing the game, even if it might be weirdly asked. Most of the time it leads into two people talking passionately about something they enjoy.

To be honest, it doesn't have to be twitch. I suggest even just watching Let's Play videos if you can spare a few minutes for games like Breath of the Wild.

I'm not trying to change your mind, there will always be people who are like "Cartoons are for kids"...etc. No matter if you ask them to watch things like Heavy Metal, Perfect Blue, or Grave of the Fireflies. They will just think that Nintendo games are for kids. From my personal experience though, those people only have at most a superficial experience with that medium before making such a blanket statement.

I will say I, too, watch some game streamers, probably for the same reasons kids to: to crib notes.

I don't have the desire to play all the civs in Civ VI in a bunch of different ways to figure out how they play to which strengths. Gimme a couple streams to get a handle on the game, then it makes getting into it a lot easier.

Oh absolutely, I also watch streams to save money and spend money more wisely. Games costing $70 now for the current gen can be pricey as all hell. I'm old enough no to pirate anymore, but $70 is $70... it adds up.

I think your point is very valid, but in this case both games are old news now. Kids have a very short attention span, and since those two games aren't the flavor of the moment, I think your point would be more obvious with more mainstream games such as Back for Blood, or Battlefield 2042. Or closer to your example, Streamers playing a kiddie game like Pokemon Unite to get those views from children and tweens.

I have never gotten into streams. I don't care to either watch, or create them. Absolutely zero interest.

I can see the value from a review perspective, but I usually know which titles I am interested in from word of mouth anyway, so I have never paid much attention to game reviews, even during the golden era of web/print back before "gamergate" when most thought those things could be trusted.

I'm also not in a hurry. I'm happy to wait until the games are steeply discounted years after launch before I buy. I can't remember the last time I spent more than $25-$30 on a game. Civ VI was probably the last time. Civ is possibly the only series I buy at launch. If it becomes apparent I made a serious mistake, I am not above requesting a Steam Refund, but I have only had to do that once or twice.

As far as your Civ example goes, I just play the civs of my choosing, without regard for their benefits or drawbacks or special bonuses/buildings/units, just to see if I can make it work. That gives the game more replay-ability.

You can always come back to Civ, because there is no story that is ruined once you finish the game. I usually play the hell out of it when each iteration launches, then tire of it, then come back to it as a buffer between single player story games, if I don't have extras in my steam queue, or if I am waiting for one to hit a decent sale price.

I had a long list in the Steam backlog, but ever since finishing Metro Exodus a few months ago, I've been scraping the bottom of the barrel. I went back and discovered Dishonored and Dishonored 2 which I had somehow missed the first time around (or intentionally disregarded, as I generally consider anything with "magic" to be too much of a suspense of disbelief) but now there isn't much left, so I am considering starting a new Civ game while I wait. I did pick up 2014's Enemy Front last night for $2.99, so I am considering that first. It got some negative reviews when it launched, and I might be disappointed if I had paid even $30 for it, but at $2.99 I'm willing to give it a try.

If it sucks too bad, I'll just use Civ to hold me over until Far Cry 6 comes out and is cheap enough, or I get a GPU capable of playing Cyberpunk in 4k.

*ahem* the original Game Boy is the poster child for this
I didn't mention the Gameboy for two reasons:

1) I think Nintendo had legit reasons to make the Gameboy as it was. Other portables were not only more expensive, but their battery life was shit. To get good battery life back in the days before good rechargeables, you had to go with a low power system, which also included a garbage display. Also it wasn't trying to be a console, they had the NES and later SNES, the lower spec was kinda the point.

2) Like me, the Gameboy is old. Not everyone knows what it was :)

Also it wasn't trying to be a console, they had the NES and later SNES, the lower spec was kinda the point.

That's an interesting perspective, but at the same time, wasn't Nintendo making boatloads of those single-ROM games? Going from those to the Game Boy meant a huge increase in power consumption for an equal performance gain.

Also, I'm not sure Nintendo though that the Famicom or NES would go very far; I remember something about how it was almost impossible to get them to even consider a North American release at the time.

Nintendo's an ancient game company, I just found out. They were around in the late 1800s.

See here:

And here, ONE FUCKING YEAR AFTER LAUNCH

https://www.reddit.com/r/Breath_of_...breath_of_the_wild_worth_buying_a_switch_for/

The first really impressive not-a-Wii-U-port for Switch was Animal Crossing IN FUCKING 2020!

That's how many Switch sales carried by one game! And Nintendo True Fans (TM) are already used to getting raped for titles they have already been waiting years for release (it wasn't even a bundled title - you had to pay extra for the only game you would EVER BUY for your switch).
This is about the size of it. Buying an Android/Apple tablet to game on would actually have made more sense if portability is what you're after.

The reason why Nintendo is making money is because its really not spending to much money on development and the hardware is ancient.

yeah dude loves to hear himself talk.

I just want a new Mario Kart. At this point I don't care if a Switch Pro, Switch 2, or whatever the hell they call it ever comes out. In fact, I hope they never make one. It'll save me $300 for a system I buy for 2-3 games. Plus, we all know it's going to have last-gen visuals anyway.

As far as the Switch and adults/children go, I keep seeing adults buying the Switch for their kids. Yet the kids seem mostly indifferent outside of playing Fortnite. Kind of like parents buying their kids the music they used to listen to. But those kids do play the hell out of Fortnite on the Switch, although they also play it on their phones and every other device in the house.

Unlike these philistines I can't recognize what you got there.
ePSXe = Playstation emulator
PPSSPP = PSP emulator
NES Emu = Nes emualtor...
SNES9X = SNES emulator
Dolphin = GameCube + Wii emulator
MD.EMU = Sega Genesis emulator
GBC.EMU = Gameboy emulator

Someone is a busy pirate, but yea it's mostly emulators. I do see a few games from 2004 like Doom 3 and HL2.
Hey man, a Bunch of AAA game ports paid for by Nvidia. Here is one:

Borderlands 2 has been ported to everything including Linux. Also Borderlands 2 isn't that demanding of a game either.
I don't know what BOTW is but I'll take your word for it, this is so far outside of my area of familiarity.
It's this game but looks worse on the Switch.

I'm not really familiar with the Nvidia shield TV.
It's an Android box that plays 2004 games really well.
I thought the Shields were streaming media players. I didn't realize they played games at all.
I thought it was used to play emulators only.
What can it even play? Android games from the Google Play store?
It kicks ass at playing games off the Google Play store. You know like Minecraft, Pokemon Go, and Among US. You know, the most demanding games.
I mean, it shouldn't be surprising that a game product sells based on what titles are available for it. And if that is the case, it shouldn't be surprising that the Shield would tank, if yout choices are such amazing titles as Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, and Temple Run...
Dude, those are classics. I played Flappy Bird for like a whole minute before I stopped permanently.
