Gigabyte AORUS FO48U 48" 4K 120Hz OLED

The thing is a monitor shouldn't need firmware support. 95% of LG's updates are to address smartTV features/platform with the occasional bug being fixed that they introduced in a prior update. If Gigabyte puts out a update to fix a real issue great, but otherwise it really shouldn't matter.

0 hype is expected. It's a CX/C1 with DP that partially uses LG's firmware based on the near identical compensation cycles.

Everywhere I look I feel like there are 2 types of reactions to this display. Non OLED owners interested as an alternative to the C1 for their PC and existing OLED owners who seem to want to justify their purchase and completely ignoring it's PC-centric feature set.
What are the PC centric features? This aorus seems to be a low cost limited version of LG CX/C1 thats it, if you want a "true" oled monitor wait for LG 27-32 gaming oled monitors or their 42 TV/monitor which are coming in late 2021 or 2022, and C2 is just around the corner..
Its wrong, LG firmware introduced lower input lag on CX, and has now same input lag as C1, C1 receives gaming dashboard update etc.. overall this aorus lacks many features to just get an extra DP?
Gigabyte has 0 knowledge of OLED and this forced shut down listed on this review just shows how ignorant/clueless they are about OLED panels/monitors.

DP and built-in KVM are the two big PC-centric features I'm mostly interested in. Not saying those two features alone are enough to make me choose a FO48U over a CX, but it's definitely got me interested enough to see how more reviews play out for the FO48U.
 
So I'm a little confused from some of the stuff I've been reading in this thread

Is displayport unable to do 4k 120hz at the same bitrate as HDMI 2.1? Or is it able to do it mostly transparently with DSC?

Getting this info on google is a little difficult.
 
With dp 1.4 : its 4K 120hz with DSC
With hdmi 2.1 its 4K 120hz without the need of DSC

So for DisplayPort 1.4 it uses DSC for 10 bits 4K 120hz unliked HDMI 2.1 which doesn't need it

Displayport, USB-C, KVM, PbP/PiP, having a computer software for adjusting OSD settings, startup/shutdown when your computer shuts down...all valid features that would make me pick the Gigabyte over the LG if I didn't already have a LG CX 48".

Any smaller LG OLED is just a rumor at this point, with only a 42" panel rumored to be going into production later this year. Note that only the panel is going into production, not a TV or monitor using it. If that results in a FO42U next year then that's great. But we can only buy what is available now based on our needs.
 
So how does 8/10/12 bit color play into the need for DSC?

I know HDMI 2.1 does 12-bit if the display supports it.
The maximum data rate of DisplayPort 1.4 is 25.92 Gbps. 4K 120 Hz 10-bit is just outside of this at about 28 Gbps. 8-bit is 22.25 Gbps, so there is no need for DSC at that color depth. DSC is lossless and virtually lagless, so there really is no practical difference between using the two. If you have a video card with an HDMI 2.1 output then you may as well use it.
 
The "review" mentioned it supports Premium Freesync, but I can't find any specs that verify it actually supports variable refresh rates and if it does, what the range on those are (and for what inputs). Not encouraged by the manual not explicitly mentioning it, but it also seems like there is conflicting information on it. Anyone know for sure one way or another?

What I don't see is G-SYNC compatibility. I don't see why it wouldn't work since it's the same panel as the LG.

Yeah, that'd be a deal breaker for me. I'm sure it's only a firmware away from being enabled, but I wouldn't want to wait on it. Currently at work so can't check, but I wonder if the topic came up during one of the Aorus livestreams. I remember watching a portion of one video about the FO48U and they were answering questions from chat.

Pretty much every Freesync display supports Gsync, even if not officially approved by Nvidia. I've yet to see a Freesync display that can't enable Gsync since Nvidia introduced Gsync compatibility.

I thought the LG CX had an issue with Gsync compatible not working (but freesync worked fine), I wasn't on the hunt for a display back then so don't remember the full details or could be completely wrong. Good to hear Gsync compatible is more or less a given now.

There was a firmware update that was quickly released that fixed the issue.
 
According to TW review/videos the range seems to be between 48-120hz, CX/C1 have a range for Gsync between 20-120hz (rtings stats)
 
yes Nvidia has but it needed a firmware update for CX, it was 48-120hz before, C1 got it from scratch (newer model). For now, FO48U seems to be stuck to 48-120hz range for Gsync

Nothing confusing about it. Absent official certification of G-SYNC Compatible a display with Adaptive Sync can experience issues when using G-SYNC Compatibility in the control panel. But like I said, since this is the same panel as the LG I don't see why it wouldn't work. Typically the only thing that really holds a display back is a low VRR range.
I imagine on AMD cards they'd go into LFC below 48hz. Does Nvidia not have something similar?
LFC is required for G-SYNC Compatible certification. It adheres to wherever the display decides to start using it.

Looks like newegg has the price listed with the product now ($1499.99). Probably getting close to order time.
I think it will be $1399 for the week it launches same as the $100 discount it's 2 siblings received.

Also IMO it's been at Newegg warehouse for a long while which was confirmed by CS (was suppose to go live way last week). You can see it had a shipping estimate on the app early last week.

Since there was no official non beta software/etc until this past weekend I figured Gigabyte set a launch date for Newegg.

I was hoping Newegg would do $100 off. Just gonna stick out my Amazon order.
 
Looking forward to what you guys will have to say about it. Pretty sure it won't be worth replacing my LG CX though (it's honestly totally flawless for the last 6+ months now, thanks nvidia and LG for fixing the last few bugs).
 
Whaaa? So they can call it HDMI 2.1 even though it's firmly HDMI 2.0?

It's entirely possible but professional reviews will know for sure. LG lists their high-end 2021 soundbars as HDMI 2.1, but are actually only HDMI 2.0 w/ a few HDMI 2.1 features but aren't full 40Gbps or 48Gbps HDMI ports. A bit odd too considering LG was the first company to mass-produce real HDMI 2.1 OLED TV's back since 2019.

There could just be a weird limitation with PS5 & Xbox Series X (maybe they don't do 4:4:4 regardless? that's more of a "PC mode" setting). I believe even HDMI 2.1 LG OLED's use 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 when not in "PC" mode but don't have exact #'s in front of me.

Sounds like it handles the compensation cycles worse than an LG OLED.
A few down sides is :

The panel protection run every 4 hours of accumulate time of use... ( eg you play a game for 3 hours 30 minutes in one sitting.... Next sitting you play for 30 minutes and the panel protection will kick in... Oof).

When the panel proction kick in it will have the annoying message pop up for the entire 'panel protection protocol.

If you have a dark background.... You will see line of alternate rgb running down and across the screen ( panel protection again).

No way to disable or reschedule the panel protection.

At full brightness the display will dim down after 45 minutes of use for approximately 15 minutes before going back to full brightness.

It run default at 75% brightness out of the box... Way to get around the annoying auto dim is to well never run the brightness at higher than 93%.

Extremely unfriendly with motion blur and low fps content anything dip bellow 30 fps you will see ghosting (soap opera effect etc... )..
 
Wow that's terrible. Looks like that forced panel protection timer from that early review is true. I'm waiting for someone here to chime in who ordered from newegg before I decide to keep/cancel my Amazon order.

Also someone tell that guy to update firmware and see if it fixes it. Release notes only show "Vivid" picture mode added but who knows what else is included.

Yeah that's pretty terrible. The LG CX basically does nothing until it's turned off.

The only warning it will give is if you have an automatic turn off timer, then it will say like "your TV has been on for X hours and will be turned off in 1 minute" and you can click anything on the remote to avoid that happening. Or you can just disable the timer. I use it kind of as a marker that I have had the display on for quite some time.

I hope Gigabyte improves that behavior because the LG CX is clearly perfectly fine running the compensation cycle only when it's turned off.
 
Guys/gals maybe don't rush into this OLED panel it might have ABL or some variation of it? That was a deal breaker for the LG C1 that I returned because it would dim itself to protect the panel. I'm just saying don't make the same mistake I made buying into the OLED hype (meaning the LG panels). I have ordered the FV43U because it is brighter and faster at 144hz and HDR 1000 with no automatic dimming from ABL type software that you cannot disable. There is another thread going on about the Fv43u make sure to check that out also since OLED is definitely flawed and distracting with It's built in dimming.
