According to Chinese media, an internet cafe-themed lounge in Hangzhou city was broken into by unidentified individuals who took off with 6? graphics cards worth 50,000 Yuan

Each of the stolen graphics cards costs 7,000 Yuan (MSRP), with all six stolen SKUs resulting in a total loss of 50,000 Yuan for the owner. The thieves wore masks and used fake IDs which will make it difficult for the police and investigation authorities to track them down.

With how many millions of cameras installed in cities around China, I'd find it hard for them to not be caught. Even if the government doesn't take interest, "flesh searches" are scary effective at finding people in China.

The question then becomes "will they be prosecuted". Depending on who the thieves know, they may never see prosecution, which is very common in China. Theft in China is rampant, especially around the Chinese new year, and most instances of theft are either never prosecuted or the perp just gets a slap on the wrist and is let go. Likewise, bribes and corruption are rampant and can see the perp get away scot-free, or with a slap on the wrist for sometimes serious crimes like rape and murder.

That may be 10+ years ago but not now.

1) Capital crimes per capita in China are much lower. The police chase after some super petty crimes as it gets them promoted. They won't ignore theft as it is super easy to solve for them. If the people doing these can buy off the police they won't be stealing video cards. Heck, I'd bet this gets solved, and the local police post something on the local TikTok to get some likes.

2) With the prevalence of social media it will be suicidal for such blatant corruption. The problem with the Chinese legal system is not that you can buy the authorities but that you can reach a settlement with the victim or their family to buy them off.

To prevent others from having to google 7000 yuan is about $1100

So an internet cafe happened to have $1100 video cards? Smells fishy to me. If this was the US my first thing to think of would be an insurance scam.

Honestly, the least fishy part about it to me was the GPU valuation. Not sure how it is in China, but cost to be made whole again/replace in US would probably be higher, depending on the card.

Sounds like cop math to me, like when the possession of a few ounces of smoke allegedly had the street value of the GDP of some countries.

You can't take any numbers coming out of China as truth. They like to appear to the world like they are the perfect country but in reality they are locking people up and throwing them in the mines til never be heard from again.

Well see if you take the 12 pounds of weed and sell each 1/2 gram for $10 then it’s worth $107,000.
