Did Nvidia change the pricing of the 3080ti from $999 to $1199 at the last minute?

I'm thinking they are doing the same thing with the 3000 series "refresh" that they did with the 2000 series: riding the coattails of the latest mining craze as an unspoken excuse to price gouge their own MSRPs.

To me this really seems like a non-issue. If you're already paying $1000 for a graphics card, are you really going to quibble over $200? Seems kind of silly to me. Especially given that people are paying $1500 for a 3070. Besides, do you really want the scalpers to get a discount so they can price the cards a little lower and still make a profit? That's all that would happen if they priced it lower, and you know it. You might say, "but it's the principle of the thing," and well... I honestly just don't see it. The pricing of the 3070 Ti is exactly where you'd expect, between the 3080 and the 3070, and that's a much better deal. A slight discount for having "only" 12GB of VRAM. I would sort of understand the outrage if nVidia marked up all their prices to what current eBay pricing looks like, but they haven't done that. Some of their AIB partners have, and that's arguably worth getting mad about, but this? I don't get it.

Those models were introduced to sell chips that fell between the specs of a 3080 and a 3090, and chips that fell between the specs of a 3070 and 3080 when binned. That's really all it is, and that's all I ever expected it to be.

Here is the way I look at it. Anyone running a GTX 3080 that sucks 320W probably has an 850W power supply in their computer. That's not exactly a low-end system, but if someone wants to have an overclocked 3090 or a 3080 Ti in their system... well, now you're probably looking at a 1000W power supply and a monster cooling solution, probably water cooling. I don't feel particularly sorry for anyone that has a 1000W power supply in their high-end system they're planning to watercool complaining about having to spend $200 more on a GPU that can use it, as if they're being morally wronged somehow by not being given price parity with AMD's $999 offering. Well, sure, maybe the pricing doesn't make sense and isn't competitive, but it's far from being unfair or worth getting outraged about.

The crazy high TDP alone kind of hints that they really don't expect the average gamer to buy anything over a 3080, and realistically a lot of people will be happy with a 3070 or a 3060. Quite frankly, if you get your hands on a 3080 Ti for $1200, or even a 3090 for $1500, you're STILL getting a better deal than anyone that is reluctantly considering paying $1500 for a 3070. Now THAT's a bad deal. So, I just don't get it.

Does it matter? It is not like most people can buy it at MSRP anyway.

Got this from some Twitter link.

at $1k it was already seriously overpriced so tacking on an extra $200 simply states that NVIDIA has every confidence that people today are still GPU addicts and will pay up.

NVidia remembered just in time they don't want to feel the ire of 2080TI buyers. To date, have we seen NVidia walk back the MSRP of any of the high-end models?

Every one of those prices would be more than the RTX 3090 prices... which would make no sense. Too high to be actual MSRP, too low to be scalper's price.

The 3090's msrp seemed to have creeped up. I wouldn't be suprised if 3090's now start at 2500. (with the exception of evga and fe) Thus far evga did not rise it's cards with the exception of the tariff pricing hike.

Remember the when you could buy card 5-10% under MSRP within a couple months of release, instead of paying 50+% over MSRP months later?
Pepperidge Farms remembers.

The MSRP seems OK to me, but it really is meaningless. Unless you have your own bots up and running, you are not likely going to be able to buy at MSRP. I consider the 3xxx and 6xxx series cards to be paper launches. Yes they sort of exist, but do they really? If I can't buy one direct from the mfg or Amazon, or Newegg, and have to resort to some shady scalpers, they don't to me. They can't even supply their current cards yet, they may as well not even launch this.

Yeah, it's basically a worse 3090 for most of the price (original 3090 MSRP, anyway).

1) Jensen is famous for doing that. This is nothing new.

2) Who cares? You’re not going to be able to find one, and if you are, you’re not going to find it at MSRP anyway.
My friend and I were able to get 1 each at MSRP. wish the MSRP was still $999

Yeah that tracks ...... WTF Nvidia.

Edit:
I sent a copy of this to my rep asking what kind of Typo hell I am living in, his response.

"That may not actually be a typo"

Go home Nvidia....You're drunk!

NVIDIA knows exactly what they are doing. They would be retarded to not adjust their prices with the economy. Complaining about it being a poor value to the previous release is basically delusional and doesn't tell anybody anything that they don't already know. Of course, I'm sure it's healthier for GamerNexus' wallet to sympathize with their audience and piss in the wind about the economy.

Pretty sure he and his friend were in line at Best Buy, per the other thread
I tried lining up at best buy for the 3080 launch and they laughed, said they had none, and sent me away. :(

Got one from nvidia website a few days later.

$1k is way above my price range for a video card, so I don't care so much.

What I do fucking care about though is BB actually selling this shit in stores, yet all the other versions before this you had to jump through hoops, getting your hopes up that one is available for you "within 250 miles" and beat out whatever bots trying to get it.

Stood in line outside of Best Buy for 9 hours in the wind and rain.

Well I guess you technically paid MSRP, but it cost you 9 hours in the wind in rain. You probably would have had to get there even earlier if it was cheaper.

To me this really seems like a non-issue. If you're already paying $1000 for a graphics card, are you really going to quibble over $200?
Well the MSRP is unreasonable for the performance, that is the point. I skipped the Turing generation because the price to performance ratio was getting ridiculous. Thanks to all the people that skipped that generation Nvidia came out with the 3080 at MSRP $699. What will this buying frenzy tell them?
