What's the truthful reason(s) for the GPU shortage?

I had word not to long ago that the automakers had bid up some smaller power components up by 25X. Not that big of a deal when the finished product sells for tens of thousands of dollars, however an issue when it sells for $800
I read somewhere that the average gas-powered car has about 30,000 parts. Automotive supply chains have "Tier 1," "Tier 2," etc. suppliers and who knows how many chips are single-sourced for small factories without much buying power (or profit margin).

Which is one of the reasons why companies are jumping onto the EV bandwagon. EVs are a lot less complicated to produce, and in a decent amount of cases make a lot more sense to go for, than the gas equivalent of the same vehicle.

Mate, that's debatable. With years of experience nd preparedness of production gasoline vehicle, it's all streamlined by now. Electric moter is definitely more efficient nd 'simpler',but taco doubt were there yet where one cn easily retool to electric nd produce efficiently elecrrics.
Also, batteries nd charging is one of biggest problem.

Ar the moment electrics are a lot more expensivem

They're more expensive, but that doesn't make them worse. Of course ICE is settled, but even the biggest names are changing for the favor of EV. VW for example trickled their name into Voltswagen because they want to push EVs, not ICE anymore.

Look at the Kona EV, with proper tires it's pretty snappy and you can snag one for like $30k right now if you look hard enough. Not to mention that it's a pretty nice EV with similar range of a performance ICE and a 10 inch infotainment. The AC charging takes about 7 hours... which is not bad at all, given you can charge overnight.

The vehicle has a max of 525 km range. You're not going to make anywhere close to that much road one day... and if you do, you shouldn't be owning an EV or you should have multiple cars - one EV, one ICE, obviously. Forgetting to charge or not having time to plug it sounds like a lame excuse honestly.

Eh, check your tank more often, lol. That seems more like a personal issue than anything. I don't know what you're driving but yeah, if you drive too much or drive with low amounts of gas / have range anxiety, of course I wouldn't suggest an EV. To be clear, I said a decent amount of cases, not every case. Of course there are plenty of nice ICEs out there. Our Audi, although not the nicest thing around but still a decent vehicle, tells when there's less than 50 km of go gas left in the tank. It's a 2011, a lot of other vehicles can tell you how much gas you have on display all the time.

525 km = 326 miles...that barely qualifies as a road trip in the US.

The Kona has an intelligent system that finds any fast charging station and shows you the locations on the navi, even if you live in a 3rd world country, it has a good database on that.

That's not the point though. Going to a mall or something won't be 325 miles. None of your daily routine stuff require that much going.

If you can't afford gas, you could actually be looking at EVs because re-charging is whole lot cheaper than re-filling.

Not to mention when it is freezing cold outside, you loose even more range. Works much better in warm places like cali, not so much in cold places.

Losing range is not a problem when it is freezing cold outside, cold starts and going on snow with ICE is a worse experience than doing it with EV outside of vehicles capable of off-roading. Tesla for example has that subzero package which protects the battery in freezing cold. In fact, their next car will be a cheap hatchback with dual motor option for higher standards, the base one will cost around $20k. It will sell like hot cakes.

Want to believe in it or not, but Audi said they will no longer make ICE some time in the future. They'll only do electric and the Voltswagen was targeted at that.

Also, from a performance perspective, you can't beat EV. Nothing offers the torque curve of electric with single speed transmission. You can come close with some engines such as the 1.75 of Guilietta, which has a turbo that gets full torque around 1750 RPM, or with some diesels... but you'll still get smoked by the EV... and this is not even a performance EV we're talking about here. It's a small family SUV that comes with eco tires. You just need to put good tires on it and voila.

Unless you’ve got way more vacation than me, a road trip is a once a year thing, at best. In the last year, I’ve averaged less than 300 miles / month with exactly 0 road trips. I expect to be working from home going forward, so my new normal may well end up being 3600 miles / year of normal driving + one 2000 mile round trip to see my sister. For the 1000 mile one way portion of the trip, I could pretty easily arrange for food + super charger twice along the way.

there is something exceptionally appealing about charging a car from my solar panels while also using a bi directional charger to let me power the house using the car battery in the event of a power outage.

"some time in the future" there is no date for that and there is no such thing as a voltswagen. it was an april fools joke you clearly fell for...

There not being a date for that is because Audi's head director is being weird (he said their future EVs will have less range), and VW group is already pushing EVs with a number of cars. If you look at other brands, Opel is even giving their Manta an EV treatment with a multiple speed transmission. As you can see, even old cars are returning to the market with EVs and more modern stuff such as Mini Cooper are being made as electric as well. While being fairly efficient speed-wise.

still no date, no matter how you spin it and what about volTwagen?! right, doesnt exist... and ev's are going nowhere without chips, like x509 just posted.

It's not about how I spin it, in the recent years VW has been on about EVs. Before, they weren't because their factories were solely producing ICE. But this no longer is the case, and car infotainment often times relies on older nanometer stuff. It's not as high end parts as those GPUs use. In fact, usually it's not even close. Tesla and a few others have somewhat advanced tech, but they sell to the higher end echelon of the car market.

Lol BS, yeah ok. How about you...

I also suggest you look at how hard VW wants to rely on EVs with the ID.3. They want to make it AWD and even more overpriced. Up Club, Golf-E, Taycan... just to name a few. They had nothing in the EV market before, but now that's not the case. VW wants EVs to settle, not ICE. They've been making ICE for long and with a good amount of problems as well, especially when it came to Audi's. EV is far more plausible for them and it'll be the future. You can refuse to acknowledge this but the info is out there.

This is a weird statement. Shortages aren't unique to toilet paper either. GPU shortages, the topic of the thread, has a much higher demand ceiling than electronic components for automotive. It is beyond issues caused by COVID 19 restrictions and forecasting.
I didn't make comment to the rate of demand. I just stated chip shortages affect more than GPUs. I also didn't say they were all for the same reasons. More or less I agreed with your initial post I quoted.

So much for retirement with EVs, seeing the country on a whim in the backwoods, disappearing for months on remote unheard of towns talking to and taking in all the different life styles. Been eyeballing a Mustang or Camera with a 6 speed manual transmission, Camera comes with a 6.2L engine, soon maybe only a memory in history for these types of beasts that people bought. Somehow EVs do not seem like a car you own, more like a car you are given a short term contract to use while everything you do is watched and tracked. Wait what does this have to do with GPU shortage??? Interesting that FrgMstr information dealing with how the car industry can outbid for electrical items common for usage in video cards and other items. The shift to so called smart everything, Wifi everything, interconnecting everything, tract everything for data maybe the most likely reason for all the shortages we are seeing more than anything else. Since all of it requires chips and more chips which is an infrastructure once built will be obsolete in a matter of years. Collapse of the current trend for advancement?

I'm old school. Give me a fire-breathing desktop PC, a laptop with good battery life, and everything else can be completely dumb. Both of my cars were made in the previous millennium and I prefer it that way.

I have a FX9590 on the shelf, hmmmm
Just don't touch it until it has had time to cool after running it!

Sooo inflation is 300% in six months? Sobody please tell the Federal Reserve Bank!

funny my grocery bill hasn’t changed in six months.

Inflation should be a consequence of all this money printing, but GPU prices at 2-3x MSRP is not caused by inflation.
It will. Perhaps you are too young to remember the 70's when mortgage rates hit 18% and $4 for a gallon of milk. Steaks are already $20. If the Marxists continue to bring this country to its knees, you will be complaining about bread lines , not gpu lines.

?

Usings 1979 for a best case scenario that would be $14.71 USD in 2021 dollars, that would be even worst than Canada milk price by a giant amount.

That seem a lot $4 in the 70s, I cannot find anything about that pricing level online:
https://www.in2013dollars.com/Fresh-whole-milk/price-inflation/1979-to-2021?amount=20
In other words, fresh whole milk costing $20 in the year 1979 would cost $50.43 in 2021 for an equivalent purchase.

I was embelishing to make a point. I do not recall the exact price however I do recall that it was much more per gallon than gasoline and the local news stations were using that comparison for some reason. Could have been 1.75 or 2.75 , something like that . It was .65 a gallon for gas just before the shortage hit so I am thinking gas must have hit 1.75 and milk was the 2.75. That was a long time ago. The point is, liberalism caused a financial cluster fuck back then. Unfortunately, history is not taught in schools anymore, just tribalism in order to seal our fate. My apologies to the OP for going off topic. We can discuss further in PM if you wish.

Back in the good ol' days, when gas was under a dollar/gallon, families only had one or two cars. Now every teenager has a car from the time they get thier license.

I remember, as a boy, I could get a shave and a haircut along with a sandwich and beer for 14 cents. Now its 25 bucks for some effeminate weirdo to trim my nose hair!!!
Whatever happened to the good old days? Geeeeezz

I do remember when gas was around .79c a gallon. When I was in elementary school, there was a taco shop right across the street, we'd go there after school and get tacos for .25c a piece & these were decent tacos, meat , lettuce, tomato, cheese & a drink for .50c. Ah, the good old days.

People have been predicting hyperinflation for how long now? Easily 15+ years that I can remember. It hasn't come to pass. They have been wrong pretty much constantly.

That said, we could be headed that way since inflation is finally ticking up on inflationdata.com.

Total RTX 3080 Ebay listings are up 35% since yesterday morning.

Total increase this week was 368 -> 702, or 90.7%. I'll keep tracking and post data every Wednesday.
Listings will probably ramp up when LHR cards start hitting the market through June, and ramp up again in July with the new ETH update.

Back in the 60's, riding bikes (everywhere and very far, peddling type, just a kid), 3 burgers, small fry and small coke 95 cents plus tax -> $1. McDonalds of course which at the time had no inside restaurant. Burger Chief was more but were flame broiled (they went out of business). That price seemed to hold forever, being a kid, time seemed to go much slower then today. Also remember Premium Gas, the real 102 Octane stuff with lead for 26 cents/gal. Used to love the smell of gasoline, now I never sniffed it but man it smelt like perfume to me. Anyways late 70", Carter era, prices were climbing so fast, gas prices tripling it seemed in a matter of years, that burger meal was now over $2. It really was painful for a number of years in that period of time, ended up joining the Navy with like $250/week pay initially. Not exactly hyper inflation but it hit hard for a number of folks particularly those barely making by. After Reagan came in, the economy really picked up, Navy pay actually became decent pay and was a very fun decade. 90s to 2000s seemed more like deflation for a number of things, mostly electronics while cars continued their price climbs as well as food but was not too bad. Anyways today, at Publix, two Porterhouse steaks had a price tag of $39, $19/pound - WAT!

Not to take this off-topic or get political, but the USA hasn't had a president spending $10+ trillion USD within a 6-month period in the last 15 years, until now.
That's the kind of thing that makes inflation take off uncontrollably.

Those $39 steaks are about to be $90+ easily, and the price of GPUs are literally going to become worth their weight in gold.

EDIT:
Make that $16 trillion USD...
