Resident Evil Village (RE8)

I dont think I like the game. His wife is a prick and am glad she's dead at the beginning. Also Ethan is missing half his left hand and a few fingers, but acting like I dont give a bloody fk. Like wtf?
If you like that you're gonna love when his right hand comes into play

Just because I know how annoying it is, I'll give you a quick tip. You can't normally kill the daughters (aka. the ladies with the bees). If you see them in the house, run around them. You'll end up in specific situations where you can fight and harm them. The game makes it relatively obvious, too. After the first one, you'll know what to do with the other 3. As far as the cellar enemies, pistol ammo is pretty plentiful and there's a lot of room to keep retreating and shooting at them from afar. The shotgun is quicker, but ammo is more scarce, too. There's a finite supply to how much you can buy, too. Some of the cellar enemies will eventually respawn, but they stay dead for a long time. If you want to come back later, about 1/2 of them will have respawned, but you can just run past them.

Another tip for the daughters I figured out pretty quickly; don't waste any ammo on them when you do get them vulnerable. I knifed them all to death while taking little to no damage by strafing around them and blocking the few times they could hit me while vulnerable. I also knifed all the slow castle enemies with the same strategy since they're really slow to turn around, and yeah the flying ones are easy to knife as well like you said. I have a shitload of pistol and shotgun ammo now from knifing most enemies, lol. The Lycans though definitely require firearms since they're so agile and aggressive. I should have definitely followed the advice of some of the reviewers and played on the hard difficulty first considering how easy the enemies have been so far, but I just passed the castle area as well and am trying to get into the house with the red chimney now.

This is just my speculation now since I haven't beating the game yet or even got half way through it I don't think; but I think Ethan is mutated by that fungal virus in the first game and has abnormal healing abilities like the family in RE7 had. You're going to see him get mangled throughout the castle level and he just shrugs it all off like it's nothing, lol. I'm assuming the same was true for his wife and daughter since that's the only explanation I can think of for Chris killing and abducting them at the beginning.

I'm enjoying the game so far though despite how farfetched it is (a staple of the RE series really). I opted for the PS5 version over PC so my wife could watch and am enjoying the Dual Sense haptics on it as well with how different the weapons feel in the triggers and finer force feedback. Rarely do I noticed any dropped frames from 60 with RT enabled either so far. I hope the future bosses get a bit more challenging though, as Dimitrescu and her daughters were too easy IMO.

Everything after the castle has been good IMO. I'm pushing toward the final major area (at least based upon what the game tells you), and am having a good time.

As far as the plot goes, Ethan can heal appendages as long as he still has the body parts adjacent to where they were lopped off or damaged. He can't regenerate, but they can seemingly re-attach and heal up. The game never outright says that, but it explains why the fingers on his left hand remain jacked up but everything else heals up fine.

can someone explain this game's gameplay? I've been watching lots of videos and all I keep thinking is the original Alone in the dark with an alien isolation vibe. I'm intrigued but don't know if I want to get it because i fear I won't like it.

does it play well with a keyboard/mouse?

I bought it for PC instead of PS5 to play with kbm and it's perfect in game, no issues.

It plays like a FPS mixed with Myst like elements (or old RE) of finding items, solving relatively trivial puzzles to progress as well as a tad of inventory management. You can't go full shoot-em-up and waste ammo like there's no tomorrow, but I've yet to end up with no bullets in any weapon.

It plays like a modern Resident Evil game. Really don't know how else to describe it. Aside from the first-person perspective it is really more RE2 or RE3 Remake than it is RE7.

Only real complaint I have with the game is that some of the outstanding voice acting in the game is marred by what is obviously highly compressed audio assets. Most times there isn't an issue. However, as amplitude increases, like in scenes where NPC's are shouting/talking loud, you notice the quantization errors a lot. Given that the game is only 30GB, i'm not sure why they couldn't give the PC version a couple extra GB in size for higher quality audio files.

Rest of the game looks & plays amazing.

Noticed this in RE7, too. I didn't notice this in RE2 or RE3 Remake, so it's odd that they made this choice. Maybe it's due to how much voice acting is in these two games compared to the remakes, but at this point I don't really care if a game is 50-80GB.

Normal 16-bit/44.1khz would be enough to describe something as simple as voice, and you could compress that to a higher bitrate modern compression technique and it would still sound great. If you only did it for the voice acting I doubt it would take more than 1GB, at most. Likely not even. I mean, i'm glad such a good looking game is only 30GB in size, but come on. In 2021 PC users wouldn't mind twice that for a game of this quality.

Why would they exclude consoles from that too? Not like it would be any more computationally demanding or make the game any bigger than any other AAA console game (would still be smaller than average really). I know we have the PCMR mentality here, but it would be pointless to make something like that exclusive to PC and I'm not sure there's even any recent examples of that in and other game either (better quality audio in PC version of a game).

Might be a Japanese thing since they still prefer physical media. That means optimally being limited to a single Blu-ray disc because of consoles.

There several games that have come out on 2 Blu-Rays. FF7r was two discs. I also believe the PS5 can use up too 100gb discs. Not sure about the Xbox.
Dual layer Blu-rays are more expensive to produce. The PS5 does support games on UHD discs, but there is no PS4 with a UHD drive and this game is cross generation.

I don't see an extra GB or two of audio pushing this game or many others past the 50GB threshold for a BD and for a AAA game/publisher like this I think an extra disc, if necessary, wouldn't be a big deal for them. This game is only 30GB, so it has a lot more room to spare at least. Plus they can make any additional HD textures or audio in this case an optional download if need be like I've seen on some previous gen console games (Xbone X at least). But realistically that stuff should all be standard on current gen now until the mid cycle Pro consoles with potentially better 8K support if it's adopted more at that time.

It's not just the size limitation on the disc for consoles, it's also the access rate limitation of the disc itself. They may keep audio size down so all the audio can stay in the disc and be small enough that it can be accessed fast enough without having to be installed to the console.

Whew. The stronghold is a FIGHT. It's up there with the chaos in 4-6 in the series. Maybe tougher since your ammo is potentially more limited. I've been killing the big-ass minibosses as I encounter them and they tend to drain your ammo/supplies. Maybe you encounter more fish later, but I still don't have enough fish to complete the last recipe. I've found enough random meat to complete those recipes 2-3 times (even if you can't actually do that), but fish...not so much.

Also, anyone else have tons and tons of money but nothing to spend it on? I have like $300,000 and all my weapons maxed out. I can't buy any more ammo, either.

EDIT: Nevermind. I made it to a totally new area and there are some new weapons and loads of upgrades for them. Expensive upgrades. Hopefully you get to keep some of this stuff for NG+.

The entire game gets installed on the hard drive for consoles.

Yeah that's not how consoles have worked since the Xbox 360/PS3 and even then some games required partial or full install to the HDD and the optical disc is only for license check. Now that gen 4 SSDs are used for game installs, access rate is the last bottleneck of all the hardware in any situation.

I'm sure we'll see worse mods, but this was inevitable.

Okay, so I got to the point where he was using his right hand and she cut it off!! Bloody mad lady! Get this, he runs away nd then runs to the spot and grabs his hand to put it into pocket for later use?! Then few mins later, he pours some green goo and sticks it back inside nd it begins to move nd work like normal! He cn even shoot with it!! Madness lol!

I'll keep watching.
Ikr? Wasn't even the first time he got his hand chopped off and glued back. He shouldn't even be able to be able to walk after the daughters stab through both his legs and drag him around. The. Hang him up by his hands. They do explain it later in the game.

He gets both his hand and his lower leg chopped off (and re-attached) in RE7. Unless he loses an appendage, like the fingers on his left hand, he can heal himself by re-attaching them. It's a horror game 🤷‍♂️

Well, in both instances it's kind of implied that he isn't a normal person anymore..

Is it tho? The only part I felt any tense was the doll house. Fuck dolls and you know that thing.

It has super natural monsters, he could grow a cucumber out of his head and shit unicorns and it would still be logical.

I didn't really think ray tracing was doing anything in this game aside from tanking performance, and it looks like DF agrees.

Those little hitches and frame rate drops when shooting enemies can be pretty annoying especially when running regular vsync. And those huge performance drops when dealing with the three daughters was certainly aggravating as in one case I actually dropped into the twenties on a freaking 2080 TI it just 1440p. I really hope they can patch some of those performance issues. Of course there will always be some random oblivious people that say they have no issues and that happens even in the most buggy unoptimized games out there though.

Visually the game can kind of be all over the place. When you're going through the wooded area towards the beginning of the game and the branches are all right in front of your face they look like freaking something from a 20-year-old game as they are absolutely laughably low resolution and look completely out of place. And many of the areas of the game just look really flat and dull and have some low textures. There's one little area where the water looks like something of an Xbox 360 game. And as mentioned in the video, the anti-aliasing just seems to be flat-out broken and there is a massive annoying crawling on some objects. Overall though it is still one of the best looking games out there.

Wow, those hitches while shooting enemies would annoy the hell out of me. Kinda glad I got it on PS5 now, though I'm sure they'll patch it on PC soon now that its been pointed out and will be in the news. So far I've only noticed some dropped frames in some outdoor areas with RT water reflections and stuff. VRR would clear that up if Sony would update the damn console with it so I can use it on my C9 OLED.

Because they aren't morons? Spending extra money on a PC version is generally moronic and stupid for many reasons. To start with PC is the lower end market by far. Less units move on PC, so improving there when you could spend that money anywhere else is idiotic. Then there is the issue that most PCs are not what anybody here has. It's mostly 1080p 60hz screens with gtx 1050/1060 class cards and utterly anemic audio solutions rather than the DAC/amp to high cans or speakers that people here have. You're talking laptop speakers or creative pebble speakers and if lucky some crappy 60 buck razer/logitech headset, all jammed into some shitty realtek integrated solution.... if you're lucky. Most PC audio is a potato.

The storage isn't the issue. The issue is that the PC moves less units and for almost everyone has shittier audio and visual abilities on theirs than the TV in the living room.

I'm all for better audio and I have fancy speakers, DACs amps, high res audio headphones and I hate that it's routinely neglected. But the issue here isn't consoles, which for almost everyone are connected to better sound than their PCs. It's that gaming device audio is objectively terrible and always had been outside of the situations where mom and dad already have a pretty good home theater system which you plug the console into and if anything the PC side of things drags everyone else into the gutter.

There was a high res audio initiative recently that went fucking nowhere outside of a few edge cases. The reason was virtually nobody had the hardware to take advantage of it so it was pissing money into the wind and then claiming it's raining it flopped, it was a stupid thing for a developer to spend time on and setting cash on fire. Oddly it got more traction on consoles cause LOLOLOL most people have better audio on that end.

I'm not sure of a good "fix" for this. It's riddled multiple things for a while. I don't think it's going to work itself out until streaming services start pushing high res audio and advertising the fuck out of it causing more people to upgrade their home theaters and PC's get the extra just cause it was already done. But audio remains the bastard child of gaming which is "graphics graphics graphics, fucking graphics, graphics" and most people neglect their audio configuration.

Long rant, but the audio is bad enough that even with shitty apple earbuds you’d be able to hear the issues I describe.

I haven't encountered hitching per-se, but I definitely saw major performance drops vs. the daughter in the room where the animal skull is. The torches are the culprits. Fire/smoke/fog effects have been problematic for certain games since the dawn of time. As you get further in the game, the opening screen changes so that the scarecrow is on fire and it becomes later in the day. Near the end of the game, that titles screen actually has FPS issues thanks to the fire effects.
Related, as it gets later in the day there are more sunlight effects in the main village, too. Those cause weird pop-in, like the game loaded the scene and then loaded the light/fire effects a second or two later. It's nothing that affects gameplay, but it's a little jarring.

Performance has been flawless on my 2080ti. I do believe it's pretty easy to hit max VRAM in this game which would tank performance.

...unrelated to the technical faults with the game, I have to say that I'm pretty happy with it, honestly. I didn't love the castle section, but everything else has been a blast. Looking at my Steam account, I've apparently put in 18 hours...so it's not that short if you look around and do all the side stuff. It's probably 2x as long as RE7 was and is potentially on par with RE5. It also never felt like anything was missing or saved for later DLC, either. I think it's a good game and it's likely my second favorite game in the series behind RE4.

I have never played any of the resident evil games. I hear crazy good things about this one. Any any of the previous iterations worth looking into?

RE7 is a soft reboot to the lore/plot, etc. First person viewpoint and same main protagonist also.

(It was also mentioned earlier in this thread, I'm damn near certain.)

That's good to know. I've not really got started, I'm basically past the castle "initiation" with ~2 hours logged, and I see stupid posts in the Steam forum about how the game is only 9 hours long. I guess some people just jump in a game and run in the straightest line possible.

I have a 3090 and did get a performance hit with the bug swarm, so I might just wait to see if Capcom tweaks performance before I really get going. I nearly puke every time I drop under 100 FPS.

You can speed through the game fast if you want to, but if you go through all the optional areas it adds a bit of time. There are a number of mini-bosses you can completely stealth or never meet. It's worth killing everything in the game though as everything will drop currency.

Just about all of them are. I'd play RE7 to get acquainted with the main character and his motivations before playing this one. Outside of that, out of the ones available on PC I highly recommend Resident Evil HD Remake. It's a different style of gameplay, but has a similar atmosphere. It is also the best of the classic fixed camera games, in my opinion. RE2 Remake is also really good, but has a different kind of atmosphere to it. It is still horror, but takes place in a more modern setting compared to the more gothic set pieces of RE8 and REHD.

You can play RE4 HD to see the comparisons people are making to RE8, but just be aware that the game is still using outdated mechanics compared to the newer remakes. Keyboard control in particular is hard to get used to, but I'd still recommend it over a controller. The textures are also still really low res, so I'd recommend getting the RE4HD fan project to make it easier on the eyes (https://www.re4hd.com/). Be warned it's over 20GB.
