Doom Eternal has added paid skins, despite previous assurances it wouldn’t

After gaining a lot of good will prior to release when project lead Hugo Martin stated in no ambiguous terms that Doom Eternal would not have any microtransactions, two paid skin packs were just released for the game yesterday on April 29. The two packs contain the "Doomicorn" skin that was given to Twitch viewers for a limited period after the game launched last year and all the items you were able to unlock during Series One. The two packs cost $4.99 and $8.99 USD, respectively.

The move will come as a surprise to some because it was made clear before the game was released that cosmetic items for the title wouldn’t be sold.

As Forbes reported at the time, creative director Hugo Martin told a player on Facebook before launch that the game would have “no store”, adding: “Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or mobile game – we are giving you a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect.

“Unlocking skins with XP is a part of the experience if you care about that stuff or you can completely ignore it and it will have no impact on your experience AT ALL and it’s all free.”

I don't know about anyone else but I personally thought this game was fucking trash. Doom 2016 was definitely a departure from 3, obviously. But from 2016 to Eternal had me just scratching my head the entire time. What's all this lore bullshit no one has ever cared about? Why is it all cartoony and goofy with it's "POP!" noises and shit...wtf? What's this game play pattern that you HAVE to stick with in order to survive? Why do enemies dying look like a unicorn having diarrhea? Why do I have to play this game the way they want me to play it or else you run out of ammo? Why is there PLATFORMING?

Man...Doom Eternal sucks.

I've got Doom 2016 and I think I played a total of 3 hours on it. Ain't no way in hell I'd pay for Doom Eternal much less those ugly ass skin packs. Now if Doom Eternal was free, I might waste an hour or so on it.

I wasn't impressed either. It was ok, nothing special. I played a bit but never finished it. Lost interest for similar reasons.

I could care less about paid skins. It's not like this will give you any advantage not is it even slightly necessary. if this was pay for new weapons I'd see the anger.

Those are all previously released skins you could earn for free doing an in-game challenge. Timed events. The previous event from the one that just started Today, was another timed challenge that was a "re-release" of previous skins as well. Guessing Microsoft told them "we can sell those as DLC instead of letting them earn it for free".

A-fucking-men. I really liked 2016. Didn't have the ridiculously limited (it was close but glory kills dropped ammo, so it was playable) Ammo carrying or platforming bullshit.

The "slayers Lair in Eternal I think is fine.

But the insanely low ammo carrying limits, the cheating mobs who can all perfectly time their projectiles calculating your trajectory and speed and factor in the projectile speed and perfectly hit you (all the damn time), or the other cheating mob who can even while stunned will immediately equip a shield for 80% of your weapons (and being able to be stunned is new), or the FUCKING PLATFORMING... Doom =! Super Mario.

I think of it as a good game (for what it is) but not a good Doom game. And not a game I will spend $$ on for cosmetics... it isn't Fortnite, it doesn't have lobbies... kids don't 'hang out' in Doom Eternal. So yeah, the skin packs, not going to be big sellers...

Why would they do it at this point? The game is dead and people moves on. This is nothing but negative publicity that will net them very little money.

Yar agreed there. If they wanted to breathe life into a dead game, they should've opened it up to modding. I miss the beautiful Quake 3 skins the community would make.

Or UT'99. Still action on the servers 22 years later.
That, and user-controlled servers. Without opening up the server hosting to users a game is guaranteed to die in less than 6 months if you're not COD or Battlefield these days. And I believe that was the whole purpose of P2P to begin with: Ensure games die quickly so people will buy the next game. "Dedicated servers" has just been reduced to a marketing term that means the P2P service is hosted server side instead of client side.

Could not agree more. I said it from the get-go. It just doesn't feel like Doom whatsoever. It's like the game is very much catered to a specific gameplay style that you can't deviate from at all. Like in Doom 2016 I hated doing the death moves, but now you HAVE to do it otherwise you will run out of ammo and health. There are some things littered about, but it's not enough. There is too much multi-tasking going on, and the platforming I agree is insane. I am one of those weirdos who likes Doom 3 the most out of all of then, and I just can't help but wonder how we got from that to Doom Eternal. It's like a completely different game.

The thing I hated the absolute worst in Doom Eternal is how the developers MAKE you play the game how they want you to play it and if you don't you don't get ammo and you don't get much in the way of health and help. Eternal is the worst Doom game to ever release. I never even finished it. I think I got to the second level and gave up.

There is a cheat code for all weapons and ammo which I think I will use just so I can play through the game and see what the rest is like.

This is definitely an odd move but not surprising since the game is free on Game Pass now. I've been playing the game since launch so luckily I've unlocked all the event skins so far besides the ones from the new event since it just started.

Every game has a set of rules that have to play by. It wouldn't be a game otherwise.

Firstly this is a console peasant problem, not a PC user problem. I have no problem modding the game and installing my own skins, including these paid skins. You shouldn't either because as you can see they can't keep their promise of no micro-transactions. If you call this piracy then it's piracy.

Also, don't kid yourselves calling Doom Eternal trash. It's a really good game, if not game of the year for 2020. The developers aren't at fault because Bethesda wanted to be assholes and go back on their promise of no micro-transactions. I'm sure the developers didn't want to do this.

I didn't say they didn't. John Carmack left ID Software for a reason.
I get that but there is nobody that can tell me that the formula for gameplay didn't completely change between Doom 2016 and Eternal. Just saying it's not for me. At all. It doesn't at all feel like a "Doom" game.
If I wanted to play a true Doom game then I'd play Doom 1 & 2. For me, Doom 2016 was a poor attempt to bring the Doom formula into the modern era. Doom Eternal though, feels like a true evolution of the Doom franchise. More emphasis on story. More emphasis on gameplay.

I liked the game alright - enough to beat it three times during the beginning of the pandemic. It's a 7/10 for me - the first 20% of the game's really rough and it's got some bad ideas and things that don't work, but once you've earned the basic toolset the core gameplay expects, its groove is phenomenal. The question of whether it's a good Doom game is open for a lot of discussion, but up through and including the first DLC, I'd say it is... and then DLC2's where the wheels come off, it loses coherency, and ultimately feels like the ending of a different series of games entirely. And it doubles down on the most controversial new enemy hard with its last boss. For something with A+ presentation and work put into it, it feels underdeveloped. Clearly I could talk about Eternal for a while, and have with friends. But anyway.

As to the issue at hand - I'm disappointed. The game's made half a billion dollars, and now they want to charge for a second chance to get some skins that haven't been available for a year? C'mon, man, that's milking the long tail on a full price release a little hard.

I've not played through Eternal and only barely started Doom 2016 so I'm not familiar with the situation really - I've heard equal amounts of people saying Eternal is the greatest thing ever and others saying its good but not up to Doom 2016. Its my understanding that Eternal's DLC packs / Season Pass are "expansion pack" types with real content, so I can give them credit there. For this sort of thing, I am disappointed that they're charging for these skins though. The only mitigating factor is that, if I understand correctly, all of this stuff COULD be unlocked FOR FREE if you played earlier, but if you missed it during that time its a surcharge. That in and of itself is far from the worst of these mechanics - most of the time they base everything on FOMO and if they do bring back older stuff, its for an obscene charge.

So we have a limited Twitch promo and then basically all of the first "Season Pass" content (which I don't think you had to actually pay to unlock originally during the season, Battle Pass style), for $5 and $10 - in this day in age that is sadly considered GREAT restraint in pricing and fairness! Don't get me wrong I still think they should have allowed users another way to unlock all this stuff especially if they claimed there wouldn't be any skin packs or cosmetics for sale, but there are SO many ways it could have been far worse. If they get a lot of negative press I'm worried they'll just do the "worse thing" from the start in a "Nobody complains if we say each battle pass costs money, plus there are rare drops a la carte during events that are like $20 each or from lootbox etc". So on a scale of meh to FUCK OFF this is closer to the meh side, but still negative. I hope they'll find another way to, if they want to continue to support the game with more real expansion content and online play as well - something I'd consider a good thing - bundle in the ability to unlock older stuff . That way is a reasonable compromise - you either play throgh during the season and unlock it or during the next expansion or season or something else with enough content to justify the cost in and of itself, you'll be able to unlock the older stuff if you buy that expansion pack, without the need for a la carte skin sales.

This. I don’t understand the visceral hatred of cosmetic microtransactions. They’re voluntary and don’t affect the gameplay. Pay to win type microtransactions, sure, those are justifiably hated, but cosmetic ones, who gives a crap?
They look very similar to fans buying soundtrack or poster of the games, it is hard to understand the hatred or any sentiment toward them.

Yes, and if it lowers the purchase price of a game I want to play because I really don’t care about things like character skins, then I welcome it. Sell all of the cosmetic enhancements you can, because I love other people subsidizing my hobby for me.

It doesn't lower the purchase price tho? Sure there are free2olay games but those are generally trash. This generation of sports games are going for $70 and are the worst offenders of MT. A lot of fighting games also do that shit.

There's a few reasons to hate micro-transactions. Firstly because it leads to pay2win micro-transactions, which can take on many forms. It's not a big deal for a single player games because nobody else is going to see it, but in multiplayer games where you earn skins by playing the game, it becomes a more serious problem. Second issue with micro-transactions is that it doesn't lower the cost of the game. It's still $60 on Steam, but it's $24 on less than accepted sites here on HardOCP. Finally, I'd like to make my own skins and there's already a large amount of mods for Doom Eternal, including skins. It wouldn't be hard for the community to just copy the skins, or at least make an improved version if they felt like it. Speaking of Piracy, you'd think ID Software is aware the moment they released Doom Eternal there is a Denuvo free version leaked by mistake? If you upset the community then they'll just pirate the stuff. No reason not to at this point.

If you believe that then I got a bridge to sell you.

Even if it doesn’t, who cares? This isn’t game breaking, it’s cosmetic. It’s not the same thing as pay to win.

If it leads to pay to win, I don’t play. It’s really that simple. I don’t play any pay to win games.

I do miss the days of games where you had a lot of community modding for things like skins, but again, selling cosmetic microtransactions is really not a big deal. It doesn’t break the game, it doesn’t tilt it in the favour of those paying extra, and it doesn’t put you at a disadvantage if you choose not to buy. You can get full enjoyment out of the game without engaging in it.

It's cosmetics. I have no issue with someone selling cosmetics that do not effect gameplay. That said, I never bought Eternal. It's not Doom. It's a platformer that requires glory killing which almost amount to quick time events and rapidly switching between weapons because you never have ammo, or you are playing rock paper scissors with a particular enemy type.
It appears to be a well liked game though. Just not for me.

Even if you believe it doesn't, it still doesn't change the fact that they promised not to do this. It doesn't change that you paid $60 and still didn't get the entire game.

Some games will introduce this after many people paid for the game. If you choose not to play it, doesn't really matter to the developers as they got paid either way.

Then you don't mind if I pirate it? Not that I want to look like a Hello Kitty Doom Slayer, but it doesn't effect their bottom line after all. I had no interest in pirating that skin before, but since I had no intent in buying it then pirating it shouldn't be a problem. Right? If it doesn't effect gameplay then me pirating it doesn't effect their bottom line.

I miss in mmorpg titles that looking cool meant you'd done something noteworthy rather than spent $50 in the cash shop. Earning cool cosmetic items was part of the fun.
This is actually an issue with Classic World of Warcraft The Burning Crusader as they plan to introduce a micro-transaction which wasn't part of the game back in 2007. If the community as a whole doesn't want it then Blizzard should respect this. Of course money is money and nothing is going to stop Blizzard from putting this feature into the game.
