Resident Evil Village (RE8)

Resident Evil Re:Verse has been delayed

The free deathmatch offshoot has been pushed to 'Summer 2021'...the delay follows a series of betas that haven’t exactly caused a groundswell of enthusiasm...

Probably not enough vampire titties.

Don't care one bit, it's probably a wasted effort anyway. Multiplayer Resident Evil just sounds terrrrrrible.

If it were a Left 4 Dead type game it would be awesome. One team could play S.T.A.R.S. Jill, Chris, Barry & Rebecca the other team could be classic RE enemies like the Licker, Mr. X , Tyrant , Nemesis, ect.
They just need to do another Outbreak-style game. That was the perfect type of multiplayer for the Resident Evil universe. Capcom needs to stop with the mainstream multiplayer tropes already when it doesn't fit at all.

Nah, we need a RE battle-royal game now, where you drop into Racoon City as a STARS rando where G-Virus gas is closing in on a randomly generated underground lab entrance that only opens for the last man standing, then everyone that died fighting to the entrance now spawns as a random monster to keep you from reaching a nuke to blow the city up and escape on an underground train.

To me, none of the RE games have a control scheme or style that suits vs. multiplayer. I'd rather that energy and effort go toward the SP games.

It's a completely different studio that is making the multiplayer games, so nothing is being taken away from the core games.

I could get down for a game in the new control scheme where people are racing to complete different tasks to complete the game.

I replayed RE7 over the weekend. The main story is pretty short. Roughly the same length as the RE3 remake. I forgot how much I dislike the entire section on the ship, too.

It's worth mentioning that Ethan becomes infected by the whole "mold" thing himself along the way. Maybe even more than once considering what happens prior to the ship section. That's why getting his lower arm and lower leg cut off is no big deal. I'm guessing Village is going to get more into that.

Anyone play the demo on PC yet? It's on a separate page for some reason. Currently downloading.

Welp...

Another "single player" game requiring connectivity. Also, the HDR brightness setting in the game doesn't go high enough for my PG27UQ despite working fine with RE7. I needed to up the reference white setting on the monitor to 175 to get the box to disappear.

Apparently the demo doesn't unlock until 20:00 EDT. I didn't see anything about an unlock time on the page?

I had no problem playing the demo at all. Game is pretty good, but it really isn't like old school RE. But had no problems maxing out the game in 4k getting over 100+fps all the time.

Not sure if I will buy it yet. In some spots the game looks fantastic, and in others it looks like it has a low poly count. Your steps don't show up in the snow which kind of baffled me in 2021.

the FPS movement and shooting felt odd, but just took a little to get used too.

That must of been the castle demo not the village demo. The village demo shows below 100 most of the time and even in 80s at times with a 3090 at 4k maxed with rt.

The PS5 version of the demo looks about 80% the same as the PC version, but it definitely has FPS drops here and there. Mainly related to snow, smoke, fog, etc. - just like a lot of PC games. Details at a distance definitely are noticeably lower, too. There's a little pop-in going on. After playing the two demos back to back, there's no question that the PC version is the way to go if you have the hardware. Still, I was mostly happy with the PS5 version. I appreciate this era of PS5 games looking competitive with PC games.
No clue what my exact FPS are on the PC version with a 3090, but it definitely never drops below 60 with everything maxed out. That's all I care about since it's all my display can handle anyway.

Unrelated, I'm weirded out that everyone in this village speaks English with an American accent.

Looks good but still can't pull the trigger not enough if a dopamine rush I like the background sound effects.

I'm 100% in at this point. I played through both demo areas (the Castle demo is like the PS5 tech demo, but in reverse) and am super happy with how the PC version looks, sounds, and plays. The PS5 version isn't bad, too. If I only had a PS5 it would be a no brainer day 1 purchase, too. For me, the purpose of the demo was to make sure the game ran well and looked good. Mission accomplished.

I tried the demo and was able to max out the memory on my 3080 by cranking up the graphics options.

It looked great, but the mouse sensitivity was really wonky for me. Even with it turned all the way up, the looking and moving was so slow. It really made me a sitting duck for the monsters.

Hopefully, they will address this in the retail version because I'd like to try it again without a time limit.

The pad controls are identical to 7, which is fine. I do have one gripe with both of them, though. I find myself pressing the right stick in (R3) when firing pretty regularly. In most games that doesn't do anything, but in these games it makes you crouch. That's something you DO NOT want to do when in a shootout. There's no option to remap the pad controls and the "B" button is almost entirely unused, so it's annoying that I can't map crouch to it. Small complaint, but I bet 90% of my deaths in RE7 were related to me accidentally crouching.

One thing I do like about this one is that there's an option to automatically smash containers without having to equip your knife. It's a small thing, but it's a good quality of life addition. I always found that pointless. Ethan should just do that automatically.

This game has an issue with HDR displays when having a second screen connected. Looks like DMC5 had the same issue and must've been fixed at some point because DMC5 works fine for me. I have to disconnect my HDMI AVR to get the game to launch properly, then I can reconnect the HDMI AVR and get audio until I launch the game again. Saw another person say they had two HDR displays and had to disconnect one to get the game to launch, so it's good to see this issue affecting someone with a more standard configuration so that Capcom will fix it.

I've not even tried to play it yet. I'm trying to finish Terminator: Resistance. I've already bought RE8, so I'll play it next weekend if I miss this stupid timed crap.

If anyone wants to play the Steam version for longer than an hour, you can:
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/...ave-already-worked-out-how-to-reset-the-timer

The hour is enough time to make it through both the Village and Castle settings, but you don't really have time to dawdle around or die multiple times. The castle starts off slower, but is pretty combat-heavy toward the end. The Village setting only has a little bit of combat and is more story-oriented. It's more of a graphical showcase, too.

Just played through both, 4 min to spare. I thought it was great! Looked awesome and ran really well. I was reluctant to even play it as I already pre-ordered and know I'll play it through, wanted to avoid spoilers, oh well.

I really wish they would implement something that ditches that stupid immersion breaking reticle though. It's first person so just aim down the sights, if not, laser beams. I prefer to play HUDless if possible but you almost have to have the reticle.

You can disable the reticle in RE7. Can you not in RE8? Just do it Doom style.

Can't decide if I want to play this on my PC or my PS5 so it gets more use. If I had a 3090 it would be no contest, but alas. Someone tell me which version to get.

If you still have the 2080ti in your sig, you should get the PC version. I had a 2080ti before and it would max out RE7 and still easily hit 60fps. I *think* I was even able to bump the resolution render up to 1.1 or 1.2 as well. At worst, you might have to leave Ray Tracing off OR bump the resolution render down to 0.9 or 0.8 with it enabled. Even doing that, it still looks/runs better than the PS5 version with it enabled. The PS5 version is still awesome, but the PC version is the way to go if you have the hardware.

I think I would've easily leaned towards the PS5 if it was a 3rd person game. That being said, I still tend to prefer kb+m on first person, probably always will. I have great headphones as well, the only pro on the PS5 setup is having Dolby Surround. Both TV's are LG OLED's.

Same here.. think I'm gonna go PS5 though so the wife can watch since she liked watching RE7. It uses the Dual Sense haptics and adaptive triggers too that I like. I would def prefer playing with a KB&M still, but it's not like this is a twitch shooter that requires quick accuracy and I've never felt that handicapped by controllers either at least on single player games. I have a 2080 that I'm sure would run it better too, but it seems pretty well locked to 60 FPS with RT on DF's preview and they may be able to patch in better performance to reduce the few dips it has or hopefully have a VRR system update soon too since my C9 OLED supports that.

The fact that it's even a toss-up of which to get is pretty damn cool. Even as a long-time PC gamer, I love that the new consoles are offering some level of parity. I have my PC hooked up via my TV/stereo, so gaming on it is pretty console-like anyway. You have to be looking for differences between the versions of the RE8 demo to notice.

Speaking of mods...

I would have liked to have seen Teletubbies personally.

I thought I mentioned playing it with the reticle disabled, whoops. My point was that you basically have to have it. When you right click to aim, your pistol just, comes up a bit. Without the reticle all you can do is try to position the center of your screen when you shoot, that sucks, particularly when ammo is scarce and you want to land headshots or weak points. The game is first person, aiming down sights makes perfect easy sense. But still who knows, maybe laser sights become an attachment option later, I'd be happy with that.

I'm not saying I want the shooting mechanics super easy or anything, the wonky shooting adds to the suspense. I just want that reticle outta my face and still be able to aim.

It's RE you can't run around like Doom Slayer lol.. at least until you unlock the Chicago Typewriter.

Just got done with the castle portion of the demo. I'm impressed. I didn't think I'd like it being first person. I definitely feels like Resident Evil. I also got some Devil May Cry vibes too. Beautiful graphics maxed out. I will probably buy this game. Well done Capcom!

The castle portion just has way too much aliasing and crawling on certain things. The room where you wake up was hideous all around the moldings and even 4k on a 27inch did not help. And honestly the graphics were not as good as I was hoping for but it runs fantastic for how it looks though.

What AA method were you using? What was the resolution scale?

Resident Evil Village review - an entertaining if uneven slice of horror

Early locations like House Beneviento are Resident Evil Village at its best...I found Village's combat less vexing than its predecessor, and its boss fights are considerably less complex, although I'll leave it to you to decide if that's a good thing or a bad one...I feel there's a stronger emphasis on combat this time around, perhaps closer to RE5 and 6 than its immediate predecessor...there's a good array of weapons

Sadly, there's no opportunity to head back to mop up missing recipes or collectables, either...once the game is over, it's over, so if you're a completionist, all I can say is: slow down...it's not super long - I finished the campaign in 12.5 hours on standard difficulty...exploring the titular Village itself is such a pleasure - it's full of wonderful environmental storytelling and has so many secrets to share with you!...

The further into the story you progress, though, the weaker it becomes, as though the beginning and end were designed by two entirely different teams...I know there's always an element of this in all Resident Evil games - RE7's sudden pivot to the tanker section was so unexpected it gave me whiplash - but this disconnect impacts both momentum and atmosphere...

for all its flaws, Resident Evil Village was a thrilling adventure that kept me hooked from beginning to end, despite its jarring twists and turns...but the delightful level design isn't enough to mitigate a strange, unsatisfying, plothole-ridden story, and that bizarre final act ultimately sullies what is an otherwise terrifyingly good horror romp...

Resident Evil Village review – the real Resident Evil 4 remake

The first half-dozen or so hours of Resident Evil Village might just be the best of the entire series...its opening is a blend of horror, action, exploration, and puzzle-solving that pays tribute to – and frequently surpasses – its predecessors...in a more unfortunate Resident Evil tradition, Village doesn’t maintain that momentum through its second half, but the highs of Capcom’s rollercoaster make this a ride that’s well worth taking...

I was already at 4k on just a 27-in monitor so do you think bumping of the resolution scale will make any meaningful difference? I did try it for the heck of it but it was not even noticeable even adding 50% on top of 4K and of course anything beyond that wasn't playable at all. And I was using the highest AA method which is FXAA and TAA but I tried lowering it and using the others just to see if it was a bug and nothing made any difference.

I was more interested if you were running a lower resolution scale, not a higher one.
