A "Legend" Reborn: Logitech Brings Back the MX518 Gaming Mouse

Lol... why are people responding to a thread from 1 years ago then? I thought this was a new post. lol. Never checked the date of the original post.
You can see the original post date under the thread title, though.

People are too lazy to post recent news. Everyone wants everything served to them.
Is it possible to move threads from the news section after 6 months or something to another archived sub-section? Like "Hardforum Tech News - Archived" or something?

Possible, yes. Highly improbable. That requires continuous effort and attention. And quite frankly is not the right solution for the issue.

Just wanted to let everyone know that if you haven't used this mouse recently, it's probably not as great as you remember. I bought one when this thread got necroed and it just feels like a $30 mouse. It's not nearly as large \ substantial feeling as my memory believed.

I wish they would bring back something like the G9x, I can't find anything that fits my hand nearly as well.

I really am thinking about rebuilding my old MS Sidewinder X5 mouse. There is something to be said for stumbling on a mouse that feels good. Wonder how hard it would be to swap the guts from something more modern.

They used the same mold, so it is literally the same shape and size as the original. The new one is a few grams lighter than the old one, though (102g vs. 106g).

I have no doubt the mouse is the same as the one I owned in 2005. I'm just saying that adult me now realizes it's just a budget gaming mouse while teenage me thought it was great.

I wanted to give other users a heads up that if they haven't used one in a while they may be remembering it more fondly than they should. (rose colored glasses and all that jazz)

By today's standard's, sure. But back then this was god tier gear. I also think some of that weight saving in the new one might be from cheaper materials compared to the old one...

Most of the weight (by a small margin) seems to be toward the front more so than any mouse I've used (this is a good thing if you ask me - the weight is right where I grip it). I can't be sure without opening it (which I'm not going to do) but I think they took some material off the back end or the PCB is shorter. The shell might be slighter thinner too though, who knows.

If they ever want to see another of my dollars they will bring back the corded TrackMan Wheel / BB18. Until then I will continue to replace switches with my crap soldering skills. :)
My trusty Microsoft Trackball Optical (D67-00001) has been going strong for 20+ years. I started with the old Logitech Trackman with 3 buttons before scroll wheels were a thing and got used to having a button under my ring finger. The Trackman Wheel took that button away, but I found the MS trackball. Of course, they quit making that one at least 15 years ago. I stocked up when I could find them, but none of them was as smooth as my original. In the last few years I found a wireless/wired Elecom trackball with that button under the ring finger and I have several in use on different systems.

Well you can say that's personal preference, but it stems from using poor mouse settings.
Like most people, you have your sensitivity way too high, so just like a car with super sensitive steering any tiny movement jerks your aim around.
To compensate for that you like the mouse heavier so it's harder to move and prevent unintentional twitches, but the better thing to do would be lower your sensitivity so tiny mouse movements move the crosshair tiny amounts and big movements move it big amounts.

If you're just casually playing and don't care about having the absolute best aim possible high sensitivity and wrist movements are fine. That's just a personal preference. But you want the best, quickest aim possible a lighter mouse and less friction is indisputably better. It's also better for your wrist health. 99% of your movement should be done with your arm, and only super tiny adjustments with your wrist.
Low sens has its own drawbacks too. For close combat it does not work when the enemy is moving fast, because you cannot follow it properly. You will always run into your keyboard or out of the mouse pad and you have to lift your mouse and while you are lifting it you are vulnerable for hundreds of msecs. The same is true for corners. If you have to lift your mouse on a corner you lose hundreds of msecs reaction time and you cannot do the first hit. I use around double the sens of the average low sens player and I almost never lift my mouse when I take it seriously. I agree that using wrist only is bad practice. I use both arm and wrist, but certainly not 99:1%. I use the arm for bigger movements and the wrist for fine movements.

I have fucked up shoulders (already had two surgeries and still have a torn rotator cuff in my dominant arm) so it hurts whether I mouse with my wrist or with my arm :(
Try to position your mouse in front of you instead of keeping it on the right side. If you have to, then move your keyboard or buy a 60-70% keyboard. It should help with your shoulder problems somewhat and aiming can be better too unless you hit your keyboard with your mouse. Another issue might be that your desk is too high or your chair is too small.

I disagree with this.

The best way to use a mouse is with the base of your wrist and hand firmly planted on the desk (or mouse support) and never moving.

Riding your hand around on top of the mouse like a cat on a roomba, and moving your arm at all when using a mouse is just wrong.

My desktop sensitivity is always set such that I can move my mouse pointer anywhere on my screens by just angling the wrist from side to side.

No weight sits on top of the mouse, it is just loosely gripped between the thumb and the pinky, with all the weight of the hand and arm resting on the wrist, firmly planted on the desk.

Same in games, sensitivity is configured such that moving the mouse from its center position as far as my wrist will reach, results in a 180 degree turn.

I can't imagine ever using a mouse in any other way.

I just don't think it gives you the advantage you think it does. By all means lower sensitivity allows more accurate positioning of the cursor (or aim in game) but we also have to keep in mind that our wrists have evolved for much more accurate movements than our shoulders and elbows have. These have evolved to be used for more gross movements for heavy lifting.

Also, what is th epoint of shaving 35g off a mouse if you are adding the total weight of your arm to the movement equation? I don't know how much an arm weighs, but it has to be at least a few pounds, and that must have a momentum impact as well...

I also don't think there is much to the argument about wrist wear. If that were the case, I should have wrist problems at this point after about 35 years of spending more time using a mouse than most people, and I don't.

I suspect there is no one way that is universally better than the other, and that people should just use what they are comfortable with. I am certainly not comfortable with moving m entire arm to use a mouse and I still do well in games, and am perfectly able to use my desktop.
Then I guess we covered the entire spectrum. I use maybe 50-50% of arm and wrist, you use 100% wrist, the other guy uses 100% arm. :)

Glorious model O is simple, high dpi, light, and perfect.

Had lots of favorites over the years. Logitech MX300 (or was it MX310, one of the old opticals), Steelseries Ikari (discontinued, eventually gets the gooey melted plastic on the top, but it was great while it lasted), Mionix Naos QG, which is physically a perfect successor to the Ikari, 12000dpi sensor. But mine has been a tad flaky, buttons stop responding and it needs unplugged and plugged back in to start working again. Was fairly intermittent and only happens maybe once a month. Around the same time got a Glorious Model O at Quakecon for a good price, so figured why not try it. The Glorious Model O has the 12k dpi sensor, and has been 100% rock solid.

Tip: Once you find a mouse you truly love, buy 3 brand new ones and stick them in the closet. Eventually they will die, but worse, go out of production. I musta bought 3 of the Ikari's off Ebay, 1 was ugly white, 1 died after a month, just a generally sad experience being unable to buy a new one that was as good as my original one. So buy new extras of whatever, and save them. In a few years you will be glad you did.
Good idea, next time I'll do so. I waited for the new G7 for 10 years, still nothing...

inf3rno's a necromancer :ROFLMAO:

I always revive good topics instead of starting new ones. :p I am still looking for a good replacement of my G7, but haven't found anything. Now I am thinking on modding my G603 and add grooves for the thumb and ring finger. I am not sure if this is possible, I guess it involves 3d printing and using a string glue, but I would give it a try. I cannot live with this bad ergonomy, I really miss the grooves the MX518 and the G7 had. :S Ohh, I just wanted to ask if there is a topic for this kind of mouse modding?

I don't think the problem is with your memories. Logitech just got this bad. Maybe their engineer died, or idk, but their mice got worse and worse in the past 10 years.

Can we start a topic for this, or is there already? I want to gut my G603 and print something similar to my old G7 or just glue additional profiles to it, maybe that would be simpler.

edit:
Ok, I opened it: https://hardforum.com/threads/mouse-modding.2011113/ I try not to revive this topic again. :D

Clean under the button covers. My G700s did the same thing. Matter of fact, that was likely the problem with about 6 mice I returned under warranty. Boy is my face red... lol

It's somewhat of a rabbit hole, but you could even look into a split keyboard and put the mouse between the two halves.

Same with my G700s. Anytime I have my windows open and it pollen season, my mouse develops the double click.

Cleaning them does the trick to removing the issue.

Although I wonder if there's any allergy medication for computer mice. lol. That's the only time my mouse get the "double click" issue is when pollen is high....

Wtf. I always thought that it is a problem with the micro switch and I need to replace the switch. I still have an old Razer mouse with this issue, I'll check it. :)

Since this thread was necro'ed, might as well ask. I'm a long-time MX510 & 518 user since I was young & foolish when Unreal Tournament was still a relevant game, I also bought the "Legend" when it was released. Currently still using the 1st edition of the MX518 with the smaller plastic feet (for some reason I prefer this version, also have a newer version pre-legendary as well as backup).

I think the legendary feels build quality-wise slightly worse for some reason, cannot put my finger on it and it's not because of the weight difference feeling, I actually welcome it being slightly lighter but idk, there's something about it which feels less solid than before. Or maybe it's just my old MX518 has molded into my hand over 10+ (~15??) years of heavy use (it looks like frankensteins monster at this point but hey it works with a bit regular cleaning of the mouse wheel every once in a while that stops working properly when dust gathers in the wheel).

Either way, does anyone know any mice from nowadays that might be worth testing out? Last time I was actively chasing for potential replacements was like maybe 4 years ago and feels like a lot has happened since, wasn't able to find any back then at least which offered such a great shape that feels like an extension of your hand that can very easily be picked up with minimal effort with two fingers on both sides. Is Glorious Model D worth a try perhaps? But I believe I don't like Omron switches that much, I like the very light click feel and low noise of the Logitech MX518 personally that cannot be heard at all when I wear headphones.

I have been using the MX518 since this whole $20 Best Buy deal started happening and it is working just fine. I clean it off with some of that desk-slime every week or so. Working great. I bought 4 more and put them in the storage cabinet when I remembered just how much I liked it.

logitech has really gone downhill. My previous logitech mouse lasted like 8+ years. I bought one of their fancy $100 wireless mice and was double-clicking in less than 6 months. This is a notorious issue logitech has had in the past few years

No big manufacturer uses the same shape as far as I can tell. Though I am looking for wireless mostly. I need a G7 remake, which had almost the same shape as the MX518, maybe it was somewhat bigger. For me that was the perfect shape, but both my G7s burned down after a few years. Nowadays the inside would be a lot better, e.g. G603 is great from technical perspective, but the materials are cheap and the shape is beyond worst.
As of the material quality, Logitech became cheap. Another 5 years and I'll rather buy a Razer or build my own mouse if the trend continues. :S
