Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Whoops, missed that one, even thought I probably watched it. My bad! (please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good)

MASS EFFECT™ LEGENDARY EDITION

GAMEPLAY CALIBRATIONS

REBALANCING, TUNING, & MECHANICAL IMPROVEMENTS

Was avoiding watching the video since it's IGN, but I see there are some things that are going to annoy the shit out of me.

First, the supposed original Femshep face that is an option in the presets. The new version looks more masculine and they ruined the finer points in her facial structure defining her character in the name of adding more "detail." Also, why is she now a brunette instead of a redhead? This is not it, BioWare...

Second, the intense weather on _ has been toned way down. Again, why? You sanitized the ground conditions of the planet so it now contradicts the planet's descriptions in the name of "visibility" or "sharpness?"

Why did they choose to do that to Antibaar, but do the opposite on Noveria? Here, they both cleared up the distant fog and increased storm intensity.

The did the same thing to the Shadow Broker Base in decreasing the storm intensity, even though you can now see the clouds billowing on the leading edge of the storm. It's hard to see in a still shot, here.

I guess this calls for more user mods...

Here's to hoping modders will fix everything wrong with the devs' selective edits.

My post from page 1:
I can't wait to start reading from all the "hardcore fans" about how they changed 6 pixels on Liara's face and they upped the lighting levels on the Citadel 3.336% and now the game is totally ruined and only a shadow of the original game's greatness.

Guaran-fucking-teed to hear that crap.
:D

I don't think I'm ready to shell out €60 to EA for minor graphical upgrades and a few sidegrades. I love Mass Effect, but I'm not a sucker.

Personally, I get that it's going to look different. As long as it doesn't look actually bad I don't care about artistic changes to characters. As long as I can make a character that isn't from the birthplace of the War Boys, I'll be OK.

Didn't say the game was ruined, just that those little things are going to be annoying to see. It's still the same great series of games with a number of quality of life improvements that make me excited to play through it again.

I'll mirror what others said, Noveria looks a good bit different. Check 30 seconds in. Can't see the background, like they are having some LOD/world performance issues so they increased the blizzard. The lights are looking a bit too muted without that iconic Mass Effect lens flare/glow.

In general the improvements do look good though. I'll play through ME1 LE at some point. I only finished ME3 twice so I may redo that too.

lighting definitely looks a lot different but I'm not sure it looks necessarily better in all cases...overall the remaster looks better but almost like they added in a bloom filter across the entire game

It all looks very good to me (maybe a tad underwhelming) but I think one thing that's definitely better in the original is the snow particle effects on Noveria. The original had a cool blowing snow effect that looked like a bit of motion blur so it imparted a real sense of a blizzard or whipping winds... the new version is just your generic "falling snow" particle which is definitely a step backward

Overall good improvements, but in some cases the game now looks overly bright. I hope that was just the settings they used. In particular I'm not too keen on the Normandy interior being so bright. And while everything looks improved on the Citadel, it's all kind of hidden by what I feel is missing depth from everything being so bright.

I agree...it went from overly dark to too bright...there needed to be a better middle ground...I liked the lens flare in the original

Don't worry, tons of assholes will be making ReShade profiles and putting them on NexusMods as though they are actually game mods.

Wow really does look better, but maybe a bit too much bloom? I will say Garrus looks WAY better.

Exactly. It got thicker/visibility reduced, but it doesn't look windy at all. Looks more like snow fall and thick fog. The original looked more like strong winds that would blow a person off their feet. It added to the feel as it is supposed to be an inhospitable planet, the natural conditions making it ideal for remote experimentation. If something escaped chances are it wouldn't get too far. The strong winds drove that home and added to the atmosphere when I first played the game. Certainly something I remember.

It is one of those things were the graphical affects aren't that important, but how they communicate a moot/setting.

I never understood why Garrus got so little love in the series. He was one of my favorite characters and for some reason he always got the worst texture and model quality.

Yeah, the wind effect in Noveria was one of the best atmospheric effects of the game, and I'd say of that generation of games. I actively disliked playing multiplayer on it unless I had a sweatshirt (Grew up in the northern snowbelt and had bad frostbite once). I kinda hope they fix it or it's still there but not noticeable in the video clip.

To my eye these visuals look to be net better. I can stand the few perceived regressions to get the quality of life improvements. ME was always about story, lore, and characters for me. They seemingly have not fiddled with that.

Honestly, the first modder to bring thermal clips and the more hardcore RPG-like weapon/inventory customization from ME1 to ME2 and ME3 will be “My favorite shop on the Citadel.”

Hopefully they didn't put to many resources towards this "remaster" 🙄 #wasteoftime

Yeah, all the other improvements far outweigh any small complaints I might have about graphical changes. I'll definitely be buying and playing through the trilogy again, and probably multiple times in the future.

they should offer a discount for those that already own the games...I just realized I have all 3 games spread across multiple gaming platforms- ME1 on Steam, ME2 on disc and ME3 on Origin...so it'll be nice to have them all consolidated in 1 platform

I have the entire trilogy on literally every platform it was released for except the Wii U, plus ME1 and ME2 on both Steam and Origin (I bought the trilogy on Origin since it comes with all the DLC that you can't get on BioWare's social site anymore after it was shut down). I have no issue paying full price for this.

I have all 3 games, with all single player DLCs bought at full price on origin. And I take issue with paying full price again.

If bethesda could give away skyrim special edition for free on steam, they can at least show a token gesture towards fans. I could afford to buy it, it's more about recognizing your fans.

You can activate the disc versions of the games on origin. That's how I got ME1 and ME2 and ME3 as well.

lol, I often joke that they will come out with a Skyrim SE w/ RTX and charge 30 bucks because they know suckers will buy it.

It's good to know the BioWare/EA combo is now so thoroughly bankrupt creatively and in terms of effective output (Andromeda, Anthem) that they're falling back on a low-effort remaster of a fondly remembered pair of games.

It's a stopgap for hype until the next Mass Effect is ready, but that probably won't be done until 2023 at the earliest unless I missed BioWare saying anything about the release window otherwise.

I still have all the game disks for pc gonna have to do a side by side comparison of fan base mods to the remastered edition

If the theory of "the previous game in a series predicts sales on the next game" is true then they're going to need more than this. I don't know how practical a strategy of riding the coat tails of a sullied brand + nostalgia for the good old days is; though I guess we'll see.

Andromeda left me pretty sour about the series, for sure. Buying this is no guarantee that I will be being "ME5," though. We've been burned enough by BioWare recently that they will have to earn my dollar back. My hope is that they can by Hudson's admission that they were "not smart" with the story in ME3, but those are empty words at this point.

As much as I love the entire ME series, I agree that no preorder will be considered in the next few. They need to earn some serious trust before I even consider it.

On the other hand, very excited to hear the soundtrack tomorrow; wonder if they will update / remix at all or keep it original.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a little over a week away from release, and, ahead of its arrival, the studio has detailed frame rate and resolution options for all platforms...as revealed in BioWare's latest blog post, players on console will have the option to switch between two separate gameplay modes - Favor Quality and Favor Framerate - at any time

players on PC can play up to 240 fps and supporting refresh rates up to 240 Hz...
