What exactly is the deal with GPUs

Has anyone seen GPUs in stock at AMD's site in the last couple weeks? I've been checking every morning about 6AM PST and also after work in the evening. Never saw anything go into stock.

AMD.com's buy direct site is a 'ghost' town where 6000 series GPUs are concerned.
They may as well not have it...given I have never seen it without the infamous OOS notification after day one.
I managed to get a 6800XT reference in the cart on release day but when I selected checkout, the browser hung up with a spinning cursor.
Clicking refresh saw the item disappear. It was simply gone.

Can you explain why.

The big part is Intel isn't up to par which may be intentional. We are at the very limit of silicon and my current theory is intel is already looking at the next technology instead of dropping literally billions on a process that's going to be obsolete in a decade or less. This is pure supposition. I do know things I'm not supposed to know but that information is not factored into this.

So, I do know that everyone is needing those TMSC fabs. There's literally not enough fab space because everyone wants that 5nm process right now. The "WHY" Is just circumstances of unfortunate timing.

This seems to be the case and I'm still checking it daily both before (6AM PST) and after work. Yet to see anything but a 5600x/5800x show in stock. I've been checking now for weeks too. Reference cards especially at the stated price on their website would be nice but at this point are unicorns it seems. If you want a 6800xt it's going to be over a grand every time. I've even seen powercolor fighter 6800 non XT cards on newegg pop in stock several times over the last couple weeks for the bargain price of $969.

It is quite the joke...isn't it.
There we had AMD essentially laughing at Nvidia's lack of availability at launch while stating it would not be the case with theirs.
Guess who getting the last laugh?
Nvidia is at least on the radar.
AMD product seem to be nowhere to be found and when they are, at astronomical prices.

The irony there is compounded when you consider the 3000 series cards are actually better at mining ethereum and so you would expect miners to be hitting the demand harder for them, taking some pressure off the AMD side.

And yet here we are anyway. lol

Gonna be months minimum before any of this is really sorted out either by production picking up or demand falling off for whatever reasons.

I hope not. Going to make a big dent in my profits. :p

FWIW, eth 2.0 has been incoming for some time and while it may materialize sooner or later something else might take it's place. It's a cyclical thing, and you'd think (hard headed) people (like me) would learn. Last time I sold the rig on the crash, this time I'm keeping it once everything craters and the fire sale ensues.

I just wanted to post this for a laugh before it goes offline.

I laughed out loud when I saw this video in my YT feed today:

This is what we've gotten to. A live feed checking multiple sources to get something. Buying a GPU looks like following stocks at NYSE or something crazy like that.
I'm giving up for now. Getting the FE 3060 Ti is too hard. The 3060 12GB is uninteresting to me. Maybe the rumored 3050 will be cheap enough to warrant more performance than my 1060 3GB and hold me over for a couple years.
I'll be fully vaccinated for covid by end of this week anyway, so I'm going to start heading out of the house anyway!

I think I was one of the lucky people, it was during January I decided outright to buy a 3080. Had no luck in various AIB drops, plus most AIB drops were scalped prices.

I missed out on first 3080 FE drop in UK but it felt like I was close. I pre logged in to the Uk retailer (scan) ready for next drop, 2nd drop came within minutes of me sitting down on 20 January. I managed to get card ordered and it arrived next day. This was like all other FE cards at MSRP, very happy with it since. The build quality and temps are superior by a big margin vs the 1080ti it replaced, which is pretty impressive considering how much power the card can consume. AIB cards feel like a toy in comparison to the 3080 FE build.

So, with all of this mining activity, is anyone actually using these currencies? For what? Illegal drugs or kiddie porn?
Asking for a friend.

FWIW I've sold things on craigslist where I was willing to accept digital currency, specifically monero. The buyer however usually wanted to use good ole' USD. lol

It's already been months, 6 actually. Its going to be years.
This really will destroy PC gaming if it continues much longer. I know I've had to bow out of purchasing recent titles because I cannot get my hands on a newer card at anything approaching a sane price.

I think it will impact high resolution monitor sales as well.

Everyone said the same thing the last few times this happened and then eventually the market crashed and supply caught up with demand. Or if it doesn't crash, then eventually supply catches up anyway because they will not leave a void left to be filled in the market forever.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, even if it's a ways out.

I don't know about destroy, but like you I have also passed up on new PC releases knowing it won't play satisfactory with my current rig. I think in the larger picture this does hurt PC gaming b/c it's holding back a whole generation of PC gamers that want to upgrade and want to buy the newest games, but can't.

I'm not a gamer, but I do need a certain amount of power in my video card for photo apps. The way things are going, I might end up waiting until 2022 (not by choice) and wait for the NVidia 5000 series cards. I'm saying that because I have no freakin' idea of what will happen, when supply equals demand, what happens in the crypto mining space, etc.

Yup, %100. In my to buy list are currently, among others:

Cyberpunk 2077
CoD Black Ops Cold War
CoD Modern Warfare
Horizon Zero Dawn
Detroit Become Human
Death Stranding
Watch Dogs Legion
Doom Eternal
SW Jedi Fallen Order
Hitman 3

I won’t be buying a single one of them until I can get a gpu that ensures I can play most of them at least at 1080p 95fps. I already purchased Control and it wasn’t pretty on my 1060 3GB (setting it to 1920x810 on medium settings did the trick), not doing that again. That’s a lot of money devs aren’t going to get from me simply because I can’t update my rig. It’s more likely I’ll spend ~500 sometime this year on either a high refresh 29” FHD ultrawide or a 27” QHD FALD display than my being able to get a new gpu at MSRP (I refuse to pay a single cent over MSRP for anything in life).

thankfully you dont need a good card for valheim and it's WAY better than any of the AAA releases

Considering that even older gen cards can play the same games, I don't believe that as many people are 'holding out' to play new games for new hardware. The difference between playing a game at 60 fps and 144fps isn't a deal breaker for most people. The new cards are really only relevant when it comes to the 4k space or lower res high refresh rate gaming, which has always been an enthusiast class endeavor. My sons 1080ti can play all his favorite games at well over the 144hz his display is capable of, and when he wants to play a modern game, it's irrelevant if he can't dial it up to 144hz, as long as it's playable. While it's nice to play games like cyberpunk with raytracing maxed out, it's not a deal breaker for many people, and honestly, even with it cranked up on a 3090, after playing the entire game and all side quests on a 5700xt, other then a higher framerate, I don't suddenly want to play it again because it's a better experience now.

Appreciate what you have - and don't be fooled into thinking you can't enjoy something now.

Even a 970gtx can get 60fps at 1080p with max textures on most modern games. I know so because I have one sitting in the media box in my living room that I use for sp games on the big screen at 1080p.

I like your sentiment of appreciating what you have. I agree. I will say that my R9 390 doesn't do a good job on modern games no my 1440 ultra wide screen monitor at that resolution. Older games, no problem, and I do play plenty of those as well. But since I can't utilize my current monitor near its potential, I am waiting until I upgrade GPU.

I got sick of waiting to be able to buy a 3080 and 5900x. So, I finally ordered a "prebuilt" from cyberpowerPC. Roughly 6 week wait, they believe. It's my first pre-built PC since... I don't even know when. 25 years or more. Feels very weird, for sure. Hopefully that means sometime in May-ish... of course, I'm certain somewhere, somehow, 3080s and 5900x's will come in stock between now and then, cos that's my luck.

I doubt the 3080's will become readily available for a decent price. I do believe the 5900X's will become more available by that time. I was also tempted to buy a prebuilt system. My work has a deal with Dell so I thought about buying some cheaper system with a 3080 or 3090 in it. I would have removed the card, install it in my main system and gave the Dell to my Dad. Unfortunately, Dell does not have the customization that they used to.

I been kicking this idea around but haven't pulled the trigger. I was looking at AVADirect because they seem to have so many more options for parts, Fractal Design cases and whatnot. Might just wait things out though.

CyberPowerPC has the Lian-Li PC-O11, which is my preferred case anyway, so that made it really work for me. Just hope the 6 week guess is pretty accurate on timeline. The nice thing is, they automatically give you like a 5% discount because of the wait, too.

If you piece out the parts are they overcharging for the video card on a pre-built PC ? I know you pay a little extra for is being already all together but I am not talking about that.

Nice!

I never would of thought gamers would of resort to this! I understand why though if you get all the parts at normal prices or as close to normal prices as possible.

I am lucky I had a video card before all of this happen. Hopefully it does not die anytime soon lol.

Honestly, me too. A friend of mine did the same thing about two months ago, and seeing his build show up etc. really sold me on just doing it as well. Setting the pride of building my own aside, and hopefully get more gaming in is what it's about for me, now. I'll miss building it, but, I'm missing gaming right now. Not that I've stopped, I still have my current right with an OG 1080 in it, but, I haven't played a few games cos I know I'll have to turn eyecandy down too far.

Think my EVGA Geforce 2060 super should last me at least another year or more! Thankfully it has a 5 year warranty!

Would this work you think or just be a waste of time or effect? Buy a prebuilt pc with a video card you want. When you get it take out the video card and then sell the PC as is ?

The price difference, especially with the current 5% discount, just really made it a non-issue. I spent a little bit of time putting together the cheapest thing I could and get a 5900x and 3080 in it, with the plan to gut it and build my own again.
The cost of doing that, vs just getting one built how I wanted, ended up tipping me to just go with a prebuilt and be done all together. It IS more expensive than just the part prices of course -- mine turned out to be about +$600 more than if I DIY'd it. But getting it all sooner, plus a single warranty that covers everything, just make me said "Screw it, have my money".
I was so lazy I even bought the RAM through them, though that would've saved me something like $20. I bought my 2nd nVME from newegg though, as that was a large mark-up.

Funny enough, I just went to "re-build" the same system on cyberpower's website, and it's a little more today than it was yesterday. Mine came out to $29xx, but the same parts picked now are $31xx. Glad I ordered when I did.

I fully agree with you on appreciating what you already have - this is why I take a few years to upgrade, because it works well enough.
That said, there is absolutely no way your 970 gets you 1080p60 on modern games on max settings. If my 1060 can't do that on something like Control, there's virtually no chance a 970 can, since a 1060 is ~ equivalent to a 980.

I looked around for the fun of it and in Canada, it may be well worth it to buy a computer (at a good price) just for the video card then re-selling the computer. Then you can complete a build around that 3D card. If you want to configure your own computer on a site though like Dell.ca etc. the prices go weird when you try to add things like a 1TB SSD. Like why would they charge $300 to $700 more?
I'm glad I decided to build my own machine and use my GTX 1050 Ti while I wait for the RTX 3050 Ti to come out.

Storage and extra memory have always been big profit centers for Dell and the like.
