Arctic MX-5 Thermal Compound Listed Ahead of Launch

While I don't mind ic diamond, that stuff scratches.
yep that's why i think it fell out of favor of reviewers, like for a while you were seeing videos or pictures of proc's in reviews that had to have their model number written on them with a sharpie because you could no longer see the factory print.

I never had an issue with scratching it was just such a pita to spread evenly! It was like trying to squeeze half dried clay out of the tube and wouldnt stay put on the friggin ihs once you finally got it out. By far the most difficult to work with paste(cant really call it that) ive ever used.

edit: pendragon1 you do know that 5-8c could mean the difference between a stable and unstable OC, right?
right, now go back and read my posts. im not worried about that in the use cases i have and ive never seen it as high as 8c difference ever and ill take my personal experience over a dude on here posting a guy on youtube as "proof".

na that was me. i had an OC'd FX-8370 running 4.8GHz and i had been using AS5 since like 2002 up until a few yrs ago and had been on that rig for around 3-4 yrs and i decided to break it down, replace the fluid, check the block for build up, and i replaced the tubing while i was at it because i had been seeing higher temps than i was use to. Well it was a custom loop using swiftech parts including their fluid, which i will also stand by because there was NO buildup on the block. and while i had it disasembled i decided to try some new paste because i had been reading up on it and as far is i can remember it was around 8 degrees difference using the Gelid GC-extreme. Like i said, maybe it was just dried up and when i had pulled the rig out to dust it and the radiator i bumped it too hard and it broke the bond? but i also since using Gelid have ever had to remove HS/Block and had it dried out. same composition as the day i applied it.

it's been a good number of years now so maybe the temp difference was slightly less (maybe 6?) but i don't think so. and i'm talking under load and not idle. but i do know it was a significant difference and blew my mind to where ever since then i've been recommending Gelid. especially since you don't see it advertised much any more now that Gamers Nexus has such a cult following of noobs that trust everthing he says like he's jesus (which i have called him out on things on more occasions than i can count) that that's all anyone talks about anymore is thermal grizzly. (he is also friends w/ owner of thermal grizzly) Now i'm not gonna say it's bad stuff because it isn't, but they advertise it as having a 50% better thermal conductivity, but in the lab it only shows at the most a 1 degree difference of other high quality tim at twice the price and twice the maintenance because i've read you have to replace it every couple years like you have to do with AS5 and it scratches dies like IC diamond does.

so really, it doesn't matter what you use if you're happy w/ your rig, but if you are looking to get a better oc, AS5 is 20yr old tech at this point. I'd be looking elsewhere.

how about you drop it and let people use what they feel like using. "not hating" lol right....
It's not hating, it's the simple fact that AS5 is objectively a poor choice in thermal paste compared to other products on the market at a similar price point. "Feel like using" is judging a product on emotion rather than logic.
 
mx4 and as5 are my go-to's and have a tube of each on my desk. if im out and need some now, ill grab as5 locally. if im running out of that, i order mx4. i actually prefer the as5 for how it "handles", prob 'cause im used to it from using it for so long. ill try this next time, probably.

The stuff with Liquid Metal is really hard to remove from the CPU someone said.

yeah and it ALSO requires maintenence every couple years because it will actually absorb into/bond with the heat spreader and cold plate and at that point it aint comin off. so if you do use it check your temps every once in a while.
And also do not use with aluminum heatsinks unless they are coated in nickel or copper. Aluminum is literally soluble in gallium!

ps: those are 45min into the test, it counts down from 60min. on a i5-2400 with stock dell heatsink.
 
I'll be interested to see how the mx5 does, all 3 of them seem to have a slight burnin time so i would expect a degree or so drop further for all of them
Whats the pricing for 10g of the new stuff?

mx-4 isnt supposed to have any curing time, as5 does so the temp might drop a couple c.
we dont know yet, it launches in march.
 
Just found another vid about AS5 that you should watch if you are still stuck on AS5... and his advice at the end is golden. Just like if you watched the vid in my last post it's best to let the benchmarks speak because fayboism and numbers on paper don't always get you the best performance. Not trying to hate AS5 was good back in the early 2000's but there has just been a lot of headway and innovations made in the world of thermal paste since then.


Arctic Silver has absolutely nothing to do with Arctic MX-5. They are not the same company and not related to each other.

They are not. Arctic Silver is "Arctic Silver", not "Arctic Cooling".
They are not even from the same country (or location)
Arctic Silver is USA based. I found one of those old addresses and it's not related to Arctic Cooling.

Please give me proof this is wrong.
Your right. They have no connection to one another other than the Arctic in their names.
 
The last thermal compound I purchased was Arctic Silver II. I still have a bit left in the tube; it still spreads fine. I had my 2600k mounted using it for over 10 years and had no noticeable temperature change over that time. I recently pulled the heatsink and even with the 10 years of overclock and daily use it still appeared to have good coverage and contact.

I plan to use it with my Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420. They should both arrive on Monday.
it prob has mx-4 with it or pre-applied. im doubting there'll be much of a difference. there isnt between decent pastes anyways...

I'm running low on my supply of MX-2 from a loooong time ago. Added this MX-5 to my amazon cart for next order.
 
I'm going to get some of this paste in the next few weeks so I can repaste my GPU and hopefully it will improve my temp by 1-2* C.

But the real reason I'm commenting is to talk about Arctic Silver 5, since other people are talking about it. I can't believe that company is still in business and people are still buying AS5. I bought that stuff in 2004 so I could repaste my Pentium 4 Socket 478 Willamette, to think it still has any relevance is amazing

EDIT I did a bad job of phrasing this comment and it came across as, "other people think AS5 is relevant and they're wrong". What I meant to say is "AS5 still works alright and it came out around 2004, it's amazing that it's still relevant today". If anyone has a stockpile of AS5 it makes sense to continue using it, I have a giant tube of Arctic Ceramique from 10 years ago but I misplaced it and IDK where it is :(

I'm using Noctua NT-H2 right now in both my build and my wife's build and I'm pretty happy with it. Also went into my Nintendo Switch rebuild, but i sadly don't have it modded so I have no way to actually see the temperatures there. (Really curious though, cause the default switch thermal paste was GARBAGE.)

However the switch repair used the last of my NT-H2 so i'm curious how this MX-5 is gonna perform before I go in for more thermal paste. I've been growing very fond of Arctic as of late.

I still use both Arctic silver 5 and Arctic silver ceramique on my builds, got a metric ton of it so no reason not to use it. Still works fine and Ive been using it for a very long time.

if youre chasing that last 2-3c then sure BUT it works just fine for most people still.

"It works fine" is no excuse to buy an objectively inferior and often more expensive product. If you have the stuff stockpiled, then sure, go for it. Just make sure you mix it first.

Here's the problem with your argument:

For most users, even ones who look at boards like this, minor changes in mounting will do more to change CPU temps after remounting a HSF than any thermal interface will ever do. And unless you're willing to do 5+ remounts and thermal testing? You won't know where you're at.
