Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

The longer they delay, the more they can milk out of their fanbase. Seems pretty obvious, from the outside looking in.
Yep. They also are completely pay to win... Who would ever want to join as a new player without spending the money to keep up? Bad all around.

I think the opposite will happen. Ships which cost hundreds of $ in donations now will be remarkably easy to new players to earn. Otherwise like you said, new players wouldn’t play, especially against people with LTI ships...

lol you hve no clue how the game is made. It will eventually wear away from pw2 even more than it already has.... as is, you can alrady buy the ships in game with money,..... which with any decent ship takes only a couple days. So..... grind for two weeks with an avenger Titan ($50) to get a caterpillar ($300), the ngrind foir 3 days with a cat to guy literally any iother ship (1000+).'

It will reset on a major patch, but.... just rinse and repeat. You dont need to spend $1000+ for nice stuff ALREADY. The game will noly get easier.\
The difference is if you spend cash, its permanent at his pint intime durin resets, and will have some features hwen the game is released *eventually in 30 years* that yuou will be able to purchase with in game credits at that point anyway.

So what you are saying is that in less than a month, someone with a basic ship can buy everything in the game. Though I think the doing and seeing everything there is to do/see in the same amount of time is the much bigger problem.

When it comes to how easy it is to acquire these expensive ships in the finished game*, it's going to be a hard needle to thread - if they take too much grinding to obtain then the game might effectively be pay-to-win, and if they are too easy to obtain then you could end up with everyone flying around in ships that the heavy backers paid several hundred dollars (or significantly more) for.

* At this point let's just assume, for the sake of this argument, that the game does actually get finished.

I suspect when the game launches officially (we'll assume it will) grinding to get those new ships will be a grind. Lower tiers might not be too hard but it will scale up progressively and those big capital ships will not be easy to get in game. IMO a grindy game is very grindy and SC won't be any different. The solo player will have to grind hard. Players in good Orgs will probably have it a bit easier perhaps. We'll have to wait and see how it works out.

Whoa.

I hopped on for the event last month, and other than having terrible timing (I missed the fight) the game was rock solid and without crashes. Still not sure it's going to be fun to me, but interested...

Controversial PC space game Star Citizen has shot through the $350m raised mark...the game's official website reveals Star Citizen has now raised a whopping $351,026,475 from over 3 million customers...

It's amazing that every single one of their listed stretch goals have been met! Wow!

These are from the start of their funding campaign back in 2012 going all the way up until 2014.... Of course nothing has been listed as a goal past 2014, so I guess everything pledged since then has simply been pure profit for them.

It's more than that, the $350 million is just for the "tracker," there is an additional $70 million investment and $60 million loan.

They don't even have one system complete, and had to remove a planetary body AND lower pplplayee count to 40, just to have one basic multi stage event happen, lol.

Still blows my mind that we couldn't at least get the singleplayer SQ42 with all the money they had wasted on some of those big name actors doing the MOCAP and voice recordings.

No one would have been mad about any of this had they just release SQ42. The rest was all just a bonus.

Because, inexplicably, a huge amount of the funding came from people buying virtual ships for the multiplayer universe.

We will never see a complete game. It is ridiculous that so much money been spent on this game. Is this the most expensive game ever at this point? It must be nice to just get free money and no one can hold them accountable. I am surprised that Chris guy is still alive after all the hookers and blow.

When (if) the release finally sees the light of day, its possible those actors wont have the same popularity, its that far away!

I think I backed it in 2015 with enough to just guarantee a copy of the game when it's done. I can't believe I'm still waiting.

I also can't believe people are STILL throwing $1,000s of dollars at it.

I just paged through the first 5 pages of this thread from 2012 -- the tone can be categorized by manic, outlandishly-speculative optimism. Half of the posts were members lining up to throw money at Roberts for a few screenshots.

I just don't get how some people don't understand that the core of this business model is to not release a product. The key of the model is to continue the sale of low-overhead assets as long as people are paying. Once the asset sales dry up, they'll cut and run. At the most, we'll see the code to a partially-finished game will be leaked years from now.

It's really sad. Because I REALLY still want the game to be released, but I refused to put up more than the cost than to play the demo every 2 years just to see how it is. They REALLY could have just finished the single player campaign, and did all this other crap as extra.

But it is what it is!

They hypothetically could have readied and released it (albeit I suspect it's nowhere near even Beta ready), but that breaks their model of not releasing it.

If they release anything, it could “officially” be bad and people would stop sending them as much money.

We can't just have helmets "appear" on people's heads when equipped. This is important to immersion. Any other solution is game breaking. Spending any amount of resources on releasing a product without this feature is untenable.
That's right. For each view mode also, we need animations for lenses coming down over one eye inside the helmet, infrared zoom etc. No one will ever be able to see them but we must make them anyway.

Well that is an important immersion feature and it would be odd for it to just appear out of thin air. That being said it shouldn't be that hard to implement, even for 1st/3rd person. Again it seems like this project is an absolute mess in terms of development. When a game goes on development for this long you're constantly pulling things that don't work, replace it with something new only to find out you broke something else. Probably going to get to the point where it might make more sense to just rebuild a game from scratch.

I always thought it was stupid they went with CryEngine.
Yeah it has good graphics, but at the cost of pretty bad performance. Just look at the best example of the engine, Crysis.
Crysis looked amazing when it came out but never ran well, the performance wasn't good when it came out. But the real problem is it ran like shit on new hardware a decade after it was released and despite being the best looking game when it was released, it isn't good looking compared to games a decade later.
We knew Star Citizen would take ages to finish so by the time it would have been finished using that engine it's going to look dated and STILL perform terrible.

But I guess they had some sort of deal where the game was supposed to promote the engine. Perhaps that was the main reason they chose it, but I guess it backfired for Crytek lol.

This is using Cryengine 3/4 which is vastly different from the engine used in Crysis. Now they switched to Amazon's version which essentially is based off of Cryengine 4 (?), seems like it is a fork of that.

One thing is certain, few good games ever came out that used Cryengine. Only major one I can think of is Prey, which looked and played fine but wasn't graphically ground breaking by any means. From what I have read as of 5-6 or so years ago, Epic offered far better support and everything was truly free with Unreal. Cryengine was free but certain features or plugins were not as developed and came with a cost. End of the day, most companies end up choosing Unreal over Cryengine and there might be a reason or two for that.

Not sure why I even try anymore. I suppose only out of sheer boredom. This is after 10+ years of development when I should have logged in in Microtech.

I meant after, the only time I've manage to get in a planet I just respawned back in a hab on the main city of whatever planet I was on (I think Microtech)
